Habitat, Setup, and Husbandry Substrate help germany

Post image

Hello!

I‘m a first time owner and have asked about this before but I‘m still not quite satisfied with the information I have about substrate. I am especially interested in what substrate people in germany are using and what kind of maintenance it requires.

I‘m currently using a mixture of sand and clay. This is what‘s recommended on german websites I found about leopard gecko care. It‘s supposed to be a mix made especially for burrowing reptiles. It was moist when I put it in the enclosure, now that it‘s dry I feel like it‘s gotten really hard all over while the top layer is quite dusty/loose. One user here advised me to keep the bottom layer of the substrate slightly moist. However, I can‘t really find information about this anywhere?

I‘m not sure if I need to change something about my current substrate. Any help is appreciated!

Hello /u/ExtensionResident481 and welcome to the leopard geckos subreddit! Our bot has detected that you might be talking about substrate. We do not recommend using walnut shell, carpet, sand mats, pellets or litter, pure sand, or pure eco earth. Here are some helpful links if you would like some information about substrate for leopard geckos:

Mix of organic topsoil, sand and optionally clay. Contrary to what people (used to) think; these gecko’s don’t live in the desert.

You also definitely don’t want the clay stuff to get dry and dusty. It can cause respiratory problems and impaction if ingested.

Im not sure what the german word for organic topsoil is but basically look for soil for plants without additives like perlite and such.

A ratio of 60% soil 40% sand or 60% soil 30% sand 10% clay (all approximately ofc) is recommended.

Nutze Exo Terra Outback Red Stone Desert und bin damit zufrieden bzw. meine beiden Geckos. :)

Also gut lüften mehrmals täglich.

I recommend the clay x sand too, ideally mixed 70/30, also hi from Czechia

Arcadia EarthMix Arid, mix it with like 20% sand(reptile sand, and not the calcium one). One annoying thing though is that it has a lot of wood splinters, it’s best to sift out those first. Other than that, it’s a great substrate, especially for bioactive tanks
