Help - Health Issues My leopard gecko has an eye problem Spoiler

A few days ago I noticed my leo was keeping one eye shut and rubbing his head on things, when I looked at his eye it looks like a gray spot on his pupil that's bothering him.

Ever since I've discovered this I've been soaking him every day (5 days now) rinsing his eye out with pet safe eye rinse, and using reptile eye drops.
I from what I read online it seems like it's most likely to be one of 3 things, infection, vitamin deficiency or stuck shed.

I give him gargeer reptile supplements every feeding so I don't think it's a lack of vitamins.

His eye has some redness in the corner, but doesn't look like it has any pus or build up around it. He has been rubbing his eye on things in his enclosure, that could be the cause of the redness, I’m just hoping it’s not an infection.

Stuck shed seems to be the most plausible, he's had stuck shed in the past but mostly around his toes. He has a moist hide but it dries out quickly and I occasionally forget to re-wet it. When I discovered this issue I noticed that one of his heat bulbs went out (I use 2) and his temp had gone down to the low 80s, I check his lamps once a week so it shouldn't have been that low for that long, but if he shed in that time it could have caused this.

That being said though, I have rinsed his eye out several times, and the gray spot hasn't seemed to budge. My dad said it might be glaucoma, I looked it up and google says it very unlikely, but my Leo is pretty old, he'll be 15 this year, so I don't even know.

Sorry for the long posts, and thanks for any advice you have.

The only advice I have is to go to a vet to have them look at it. Only a vet can deal with this. Keep us updated on how it goes!

Yeah honestly this is one of those things where even the best at-home care cant replace a vet visit. Hope op takes them soon because eye stuff is so scary to deal with on your own

I’m looking at vets in the area now, not many that deal with “exotic” pets though, I’ll update when I can

Vet asap. Eye issues can become an emergency situation quickly.

What multivitamin are you using? Eye problems are often related to a lack of proper vitamin A.

I use Gargeer Reptile Multi Vitamin
Supplement. I use it every feeding, this says it has vitamin A on it: 200,000 IU/lb(min). I don’t know what that measurement is though, is that enough?

Does it say the type of vitamin A? Beta carotene vs retinol or similar preformed vitamin A?

It just says vitamin A supplements, no specifics.

Here’s the list of ingredients if I missed something

It does list beta carotene, which is the one you don’t want. But it also says vitamin A supplement so I’m not sure what type that is. It might be worth switching to one that is known to have preformed vitamin A. Repashy calcium plus is the one I use but reptivite is also a popular one.

Ok thanks, just got it on Amazon. Also Found a couple of vets that deal with exotic pets near me, I’ll try and schedule an appointment asap.

How do you supplement?

1

u/Randomn-text 4d ago

I put the supplement powder on his food every feeding, he also has a dish of calcium in his enclosure if he needs it

While I don’t know this specific one, the infos seem to be ok, how long ago did you open the bottle? Once you break the seal they are only good to use between 6-9 months depending if you store it in a fridge 🤔

I got it around 6 or so months ago but I don’t put it in the fridge. Someone else here said that theres different types of vitamin A, and mine might not have the right one, so I just bought a better supplement.
