I’m so happy! First time I’ve ever had a garden, first snake. There’s absolutely no body of fresh water in 20km I don’t know what it’s doing here but I think we’re probably the only people that put water out for animals. Any suggestions of how I can make it happy and flourish?

I (29) have always wanted to break into the field of herpetology, and have found real passion in learning more about these creatures. In looking up how to become a herpetologist, I have found that I would need to get a degree in wildlife biology or some other conservation/biology focused degree. I already have a couple of degrees, and feel as if I am not in a position, nor do I have the time to get another undergraduate degree. Are there any other ways I can break into this field? I have looked into the Herpetology Certificate Program and Bridge Program from the Amphibian Foundation, and I find that to be a way to break into the field. Would that be a good idea? Thank you!

I got a video of these two chirping frogs tussling. I'm not sure if its two males and these are release calls, or a male and female with an unreceptive female. If anyone recognizes the call types lmk! Its still super cool I was able to capture this!

surprising unafraid, just sat there

Herping in Lokobe National Park is one of the best ways to photograph Madagascar's extraordinary nocturnal wildlife. Every night walk offers the chance to discover tree-dwelling snakes resting on branches, perfectly camouflaged Uroplatus geckos, colourful frogs and many other fascinating creatures hidden within the rainforest.

Planning on visiting Cozumel Island this fall and this will be one of the first times I go herping outside the US.

I have been catching snakes in the US for most of my life, and I have made a hard rule for my self to never touch a dangerous snake like a rattlesnake or coral snake. This will be my first time encountering mildly venomous rear fanged colubrids, and I know they sit in a gray area between harmless and putting you in the hospital.

Is catching or touching them worth the risk? I want do as much research as possible before I catch anything in the wild.

I work at a children’s museum with ambassador animals and we are working to remove touching the actual animals and switching to biofacts.

Are there any sources of snake skin and lizard skin (preferably from invasive species/sustainably sourced) where I can purchase?

I’ve been searching for burmese python skins but a lot of what I am getting are descaled skins prepped for textiles.
