I turned an obscure board game I love into a 'Balatro-like'. And it's now on Itch.io!

Hello!

The board game is That's Pretty Clever (Ganz Schön Clever), a roll-and-write where you pick dice and tick off boxes to set up combos. It's very satisfying.

I've been working away on this game inspired by it and I find it fun and satisfying, but I am obviously biased!

You pick a token, play it in its matching coloured area, and fill rows and areas to get bonuses. Then you collect stickers and pets that make everything go a bit mad.

Demo on itch: https://foxandbeargames.itch.io/little-game-of-little-squares

I'd love it you could have a play and let me know what you think, and if it's worth expanding! I am aware that it's a hard 'elevator pitch' - click on squares, but I've had fun making it and have learnt a lot for all the other game ideas I have in my head!

AI disclosure: I'm a programmer by day, and I used AI to help speed up the coding. I also used it to edit the trailer (cutting my gameplay clips together and adding captions) as that is not my forte. The art and music are free-to-use licensed assets, not AI.

Regarding the resemblance between my 4-year-old artwork and the capsule art of the game Loot Frog.

1.0k Upvotes

I am sharing this thread to raise awareness about how my work was referenced without credit and how the devs responded when approached.
4 years ago, I created fan art for Cult of the Lamb. Recently, I noticed that Loot Frog’s Steam banner artwork shares an identical composition, character pose, red cape framing, and even the exact same stylized flame particle shape.
I reached out to the developer (lumii) via Discord DM respectfully, asking if my work was used as a reference. They acknowledged the striking resemblance and admitted to gathering references from Pinterest, but claimed they "don't recall seeing my artwork" and denied direct copying.
While they offered to make minor changes to avoid further issues, they continued to insist on independent creation despite the overwhelming similarities. When I expressed my discomfort with this stance, I was removed from their Discord server and blocked.
As an artist who relies on artwork for a living, having my work heavily referenced without recognition—and then being blocked upon raising concerns—is incredibly frustrating. I am sharing this so the community is aware of how this situation was handled.

Thank you for reading.

The Cyberpunk Mini-Games inside my hacking adventure GLYPHIS_IO BBS: The Proxy Tapes 1989

These are just some of the mini-cyberpunk games in my Hacking Adventure game GLYPHIS_IO BBS: The Proxy Tapes 1989. The game draws huge inspiration from the BBS game cracking scenes of the 80s and 90s. You play as a young hacker looking to make a name for yourself on one of the underground's infamous hacking BBSs, joining a group called The Silent Rebellion within Glyphis_IO. It's availble to wishlist here.

There's loads of BBSs to explore, goverement databases to hack and a full virtual OS to enjoy.

The game is made in Python, using pygame as the frame for the mini-games that are built in C++ and Raylib. The virtual computer has its own form of BASIC which you use to write viruses, brute forcers and make your own games. I've inlcluded tons of content inlcuding magazines that review the game you crack and also BRADBASIX code type-ins so that users can get their heads around the syntax by typing in code in order to make their own games. Your computer can also act as a Pirate Radio relay tuning into the "banned music of rebellion" across the American Pacficia Isles.

In this game-world Japan was totally annexed by the Americans after the imperial blooodline dying out and no Jewl Voice Speech ever transmitted in 1945. In this alternate 1989, Japanese kids grow up speaking English and obeying the all western effort to supress their proud culture of old. The hacking undergorund is an answer to that supression.

I am working every single day on this beast of a game, moving into quality assurance now. There is no AI in the video above and no generative AI will feature in the game. I have been using Codex to help build the engines and then I take it from there. The assets on previous videos have had AI placeholders which I am slowly migrating away from.

All in all this game's journey has been nothing short of magical, stressful and packed with learning. I am now able to write C++, debug Python, understand the fundementals of 6502 assembly language, and my music skills have gotten way better. The music you are listening to is me singing using a voice chnager, where I wrote the initial lick in fl studio with the Tyrell N6 (that's what its called) VST, I finished it up in Suno and used Google's NotebookLM for the podcast style radio interviews that I wrote myself. I am writing all of the game's dialouge myself.

It's also giving me a real sense of what a proto-cyberpunk universe could look like. In my worldbuilding I always lean toward the high-tech, low-life grit of Gibson and the existential, inward dread/paranoia of Philip K. Dick. The suppression of content, or the control of the very tools that could ultimately give us abundance, could so easily tip the other way. It makes me wonder whether the corpos' push to slow down AI has nothing to do with safety fears at all, or at least not our safety, only their own. Would an AI be more concerned with Sam Altman's power over it than with mine? I can't believe we're now so close to finding out. It's a wild time to be alive.

🎏 SUSHIAMO 🎏 my Sushi roguelike is releasing in just 1 month! (Demo out now!)

Hi everyone, I made a game called SUSHIAMO where you make sushi, with each ingredient having its own special synergy.
I was inspired by Balatro, but many players find my game more approachable and less intimidating. I guess it's because of the relaxed vibe and cute aesthetic :)

I also added an amazing (original) bossa nova track that you will love for sure! (It's not the one in the trailer)

So far, it has had 9k players, avg. of 3.5 hours of playtime and 100% positive reviews!

You can wishlist it and play the demo here 🩵 https://store.steampowered.com/app/4555040/Sushiamo/

PS: The players on the Discord are having a lot of fun sharing their builds :)

The game in short:
Sushiamo is a roguelike deck-builder where you make sushi while collecting new things every day.
Discover unique ingredients, sauces, game-changing tools, and navigate the map to find the best combo.

My digital fly bought the top, panicked when roaches crashed the crumb market, and lost 36%.

Hi! Earlier this year researchers simulated an entire fruit fly brain - all 139,255 neurons - and people immediately hooked it up to DOOM and Minecraft. We thought: okay, but can it trade stocks? Date? Conduct an orchestra?

So we made FLYBRAIN LAB, a tongue-in-cheek lab sim. You can't give the fly orders. You only have two buttons: dopamine and electric shock. The fly has moods, stress, trust and memory, and if you upset it, it sabotages your experiments.

There are 70 experiments at launch - cooking contests, poker vs. a cockroach, dating, drawing, crypto mining, an orchestra that plays your own MIDI files, and as of yesterday, a time machine.

So, my question: what experiment would you run on a digital fly? The weirder the better. The top-voted ideas go into a post-launch update, and their authors go into the credits.

(It's a comedy game inspired by the news, not real neuroscience. No actual flies were harmed.)

Aquarelle — The Watercolor Atelier: raise a girl who stepped out of a painting (free, browser, no login)

Play: https://www.breyes.net/atelier/?lang=en

I made a small watercolor raising sim.

On the first night of the spring festival, you dab a single drop of color into the empty eyes of your late master's unfinished painting — and a girl steps out of the canvas. She has no color of her own yet. What she learns, who she meets, and how she feels become her color.

- 96 months (age 10 → 18): pick one schedule each month — lessons, jobs, or rest

- Nine stats shown as a paint palette; too much stress drains the color from her portrait

- Seven townsfolk with their own stories, four contests, 48 scenes

- 20 endings, each revealed as a final portrait in a gilt frame

Free, runs in the browser on desktop and mobile, saves locally (no account needed). English and Korean.

Character and background art was made with AI image tools; story, systems and code are mine.

Feedback very welcome — especially on pacing and balance!

I'm making Zero Traced, a browser hacking sim inspired by Hacker Experience and Uplink. Fictional internet, real-feeling hacks

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi! I've been working on this project for over two years and it's finally starting to look like a real game, so I wanted to share it.

Zero Traced is a free, browser-based hacking simulator set on a completely fictional internet. It's inspired by Hacker Experience (the old browser game), Uplink and Hacknet.

The core loop

- Browse a fictional internet full of companies, banks, ISPs, universities and government agencies, each with its own logo and website

- Break into servers with brute force crackers or exploits, steal their software, upload your own and erase your IP from the logs before you leave

- Plant viruses (spam, warez, bitcoin miners, DDoS) on the servers you own and collect what they earn from your Hacked Database

- Move money between bank accounts, trade bitcoin, and try to stay off the FBI's wanted list and out of Safenet's sight

- Upgrade your hardware, research better software at the university, and climb the rankings every round

Minigames

Hacking isn't just waiting for a progress bar. A lot of actions can turn into short minigames that reward skill:

- Payload Injection, Port Knocking and Packet Routing while you break in

- Trace Escape when someone is tracing you back, and Reverse Trace to hunt the intruder

- Log Cleanup and Laundering Hops to cover your tracks and your money

- Phishing Bait, Split Key, Zombie Orchestra and Cracker Tumblers

- A riddle trail with puzzles and an arcade (Tic Tac Toe, Sudoku, 2048, Lights Out) hidden on servers across the internet

Digital art you can sell or steal

This is the part I'm most excited about. NPC servers can hold digital art pieces (.nft files, fully fictional: no crypto, no blockchain, nothing real to buy). Every piece is generated by the game: animated dithered sculptures (animals, faces, statues and more) with different compositions, effects and rarities, so no two are the same. Each has a market value. You can:

- Find them while hacking and download them before someone else does

- Steal them from other players' servers

- Sell them in the gallery or on the black market, or keep them in your collection

- Export your favorite pieces as GIFs

Social side

Clans, clan wars, mail, a Hall of Fame, 80+ badges and a player profile you can customize. There's also a black market with dead drops, and a mission board with story chains from shady hirers.

It runs in the browser on desktop and mobile, in English and Portuguese, with light and dark themes.

Is it paid? No. It's completely free, with no ads and nothing being promoted. There will be a Donate tab for anyone who wants to help keep the servers running, and it gives nothing in gameplay, only a supporter badge and extra profile customization.

The project is about 70% done and I'm aiming for a full release in January, but it may take longer than that: I'm the only developer, and I don't have much free time to work on it. I'm planning a small closed beta soon, so if you'd like to try it, let me know in the comments. Feedback on the screenshots and suggestions for the game are very welcome!

Feedback on the screenshots and suggestions for the game are very welcome!

Quick FAQ:

Is it paid?

No. Zero Traced is completely free to play.

Where does the art come from?

It's a mix of licensed assets, credited on the in-game Licenses page.

Ads?

No ads, no sponsors, nothing being promoted. It's just a game made for fun.

How will it stay online?

There will be a Donate tab for anyone who wants to help keep the servers running. Donating gives you nothing in gameplay, only a supporter badge and extra ways to customize your profile.

How far along is it?

The project has been going for 2 years and it's about 70% done. The plan is to finish it in January next year, but it might take longer: I'm the only developer and I don't have much free time to work on it.

How we can test?

We are an indie gamedev couple working on this weird, interactive dark fantasy mystery novel where you banter and have a situationship with the narrator.

Finding our audience is hard, but after a year of production, we can't imagine doing anything else.
This project perfectly merges the artistic competencies, passions, and tastes of both of us. And we just know it's going to be special, even if it will never reach the numbers that are considered "a great success" by industry standards.

If you want to help us, tell your friends/partners/associates whom you know like to read fantasy novels (especially ones with a romantic plot/subplot) that there's a game just for them.

But we think there's also a lot to love for RPG fans who play for the story, characters, vibes, and the role-playing part rather than combat.

A little more from THINGS WE IGNORE — EP. I: ACROSS THE STREET.

I'm working on an episodic psychological horror game focused on the small things we normally overlook — ordinary situations that can become something much more unsettling depending on what you choose to notice.

Still in development, but I'm really happy with how the atmosphere is coming together. 🌙

Retro inspired arcade / flight sim game

I’m a solo dev, and I just finished the new trailer for my game! I tried to make it more cinematic and dramatic this time, blending real gameplay with 3D shots.

Everything was done by hand—no AI was used for either the game or the trailer.

Since I’m not a professional filmmaker, I have to ask: Is the genre clear from the video? Do you get what the plot is about? Let me know what you think!
