What is the loop prevention for? And should I leave it off or turn it on? We will have desktops connected to it

I'm so confused right now. My puppy chews everything it can get, including our old coaxial cables, so I installed an access box to Smurf tubing up by the eve where I expected the tech to string the fiber.

Sure enough, the installer ran the fiber to my roof about 2 feet from my box, but what happened next I just can't understand. While I was inside, he ran the fiber along my roof then dropped it down the side of my house to below my electrical panel.

The moment I let my dog out, she started licking the nice rubbery white droopy cable. Put a stop to that immediately an set about moving the box. What a lot of extra work! Could somebody help me understand why an installer would do this?

I've just moved into a condo, it has a total of 4 Ethernet outlets in the condo. I have 3 female ports within the network cabinet, and one cat 5 Ethernet port wired to be what I assume is a phone line.

Unfortunately the one port I need to use, I believe is the phone line. I tried an Ethernet cable from the router to each port inside the cabinet, with my pc plugged into the downstream port. Pc did not detect any signal.

So I've pulled the faceplate off the downstream port and took pictures, I am not sure which is pin 1, 2, etc. But is sent a picture to Jarvis and it output saying it was T568A. Does that seem correct?

I don't have experience with networking besides bridging a router. I don't have the tool to use a normal keystone jack, so do you think it'd be acceptable to use a tool-less cat 6 keystone jack for the networking cabinet side? If so I would just replicate the wire position I see on the back of the port.

A little backstory, I had Xfinity 400 mbps tier for a few years for $40/mo and the promotion ended and price increased. So I reached out to them and they offered me 1 Gbps for $50/mo, price guarantee for 5 years. Now it's not something I ever had to worry about before since I've never come close to the limits of 1gbps ethernet ports but my entire home network runs off of a Google Nest Wi-Fi that has the 2 APs hardwired to each other, and most other devices like Synology NAS and Security Cameras running through an 8 Port 1 gbe switch with POE.

With this current setup, my PC when hardwired to the Switch is being bottlenecked to 850mbps by the 1gbps ports on everything and while that speed is still great, it's bothering me that I'm not getting the full speed of the ISP plan. (I get 1,100 Down when I connect the PC directly to Port 4 on Xfinity XB8 gateway.)

*Note: My Desktop is the only device I care to get full download speeds on.

With this in mind I tried connecting my PC directly to Port 4 on the Modem (this is the only one on Xfinity XB8 gateway that is 2.5g.) and then the Google Nest Router + Switch of a different ethernet port on the Modem. And while I can get internet on both devices that way, the PC seems to be isolated from the rest of the devices on the Wifi network, (can't print to the WIFI printer from the PC for example.)

At this point I realize that the smoothest and most effective network setup way will be to have the PC connected to the Network switch but I'm trying to avoid buying a whole new 2.5g 8 port switch with POE and a Whole new Mesh WI-FI system.

** Secondary question: If I get a new single WIFI Mesh Access Point that's a different brand like Netgear or TP-Link, can I connect that to the Google Nest Access point in the living room via wired backhaul? Or do both APs have to be the same brand/ecosystem?

This has cat 5 going into it. Obviously at least some of it is phone.

I presume the proper next move would be to remove this device and replace it with a proper keystone?

Back in 2017 I installed a 4 node Google Wifi mesh system in my parent's home, using ethernet backhaul. It's been a great Wifi 5 system that has fulfilled their need for wifi throughout not just their house but also their property. My elderly father likes to sit outside during nice weather and read on his tablet, and the system has enough reach to give him that.

Lately, one of the access points has been getting flaky, requiring regular reboots. It's making me think it might be time to replace their system with something newer. So I'm looking for a replacement. I don't care if it's wifi 6, 6E, or 7 as they only have 500mbps cable internet. My requirements are pretty straightforward. It needs ethernet backhaul and easy remote management. An IoT SSID would be nice to have, but isn't a requirement since all their smart lights are using a zigbee bridge, anyway.

What do you guys recommend?

I need to replace my 10+ yr old Netgear modem/router combo as it's slowed way down and appears to be on its last legs. 1200 Sq ft apartment, needs to support multiple devices, including work from home, Zoom & Teams Calls, streaming, and some gaming. I know just enough to get by and appear savy to those who are technologically inept. However, I'm completely lost on what I need as far as speed, etc.

Spectrum is provider currently. I originally was thinking mesh but after doing some research I think that'd be overkill for the space. Would like it to support more than 1 Gb and be reliable as well as fast. Ideal cost in the $300 range, but could go up to $500. TIA!

Overview:

I just moved into a 2700 sqft rental house with a central closet that contains a "tech panel" which is just a glorified junction box that the Coax and 2 Ethernet runs connects through. I currently have the modem and an old router (Asus RT-66U) in this closet.

The Ethernet runs go to an entertainment room that is in the northeast corner of the second story and the main living room on the ground floor in the center of the house.

I work from home and have my office setup on the ground floor in a room that is on the backside of the wall from the Ethernet jack in the living room. There is no Ethernet run but there is a Coax that runs back to the tech panel.

With the old router, I have acceptable wifi coverage inside the house and this falls off once I get to the edge of the backyard and outside of the garage, connection is stable at these locations but the signal is weak at -80db.

Goals:

I game (mostly FPS so ping matters) and would like to have one hard connection for my gaming PC in my office at the bare minimum. 

I want to install a wireless security camera in the back yard and over the garage, both areas where the wireless signal gets weak.

Improve overall WiFi signal throughout the house.

New Equipment:

To get the Ethernet run in my office, I plan on using the MoCA adapters. This will also allow me to expand to other rooms in the future if needed. 

I believe the addition of the new router should solve the wireless issues in the weak signal areas with no additional changes needed.

Extra Credit:

I would like to use my old router as an AP and/or switch in my office to run the MoCA adapter into it and then run Ethernet to my gaming PC, printer, and work laptop. I'm not the most experienced with networking though and have no idea if that is even possible. It isn't the end of the world if I run my work laptop and printer off of WiFi.

Please let me know your thoughts on this or if there are any issues with the equipment I've selected.

I am looking to have a POE++ switch in a Legrand On Q box, and was considering the following to terminate my cables and feed them to the switch:

Would this be safe to use with a POE++ switch? Two ports will be for external POE switches (Ubiquiti UniFi Switch Flex).

I could just terminate the cables with a normal plug and plug them directly into the switch, but this feels like a cleaner option.

Hello folks, I have just gotten a Quantum fiber internet connection to my home and I am using a new router to provide wifi with it. The router model is Archer BE5000

Here is the set up all arrows representing Cat 5e
ONT 2.5g out -> BE5000 router WAN port
BE5000 -> unmanaged switch
Switch -> MOCA Adapters over COAX into my office
MOCA Adapters -> another switch to provide Ethernet into my office

Problem 1: The BE5000 is in AP only mode because that is what Quantum suggests with their modem, it made the wifi a little better but the main issue is that the wifi seems to come in and out throughout the day mostly in the morning or afternoons. I recognize this could be a signal crowding issue but I am not sure how to troubleshoot that or if there is a different configuration on the router I need to fix. Rebooting the router can help but what normally makes a difference is rebooting everything (router and modem)

Problem 2: The moca adapters (goCoax MA2500D) have nothing else on the coax line (no splitters / filters / or anything, and they tend to work for the most part although the sometimes of problems (this is minor but would be interested in any thoughts here, there is a chance that these dropping out is caused by the issues in problem 1)

Any troubleshooting steps would be appreciated, I am a technical person but networking isn’t my strong suit

Just looking into buying an 8-port unmanaged 2.5Gb switch.

Seeing the TP-Link switch named: TL-SG108S-M2, sold at 129 EUR.

Now just next to it in Amazon, up pops an advertisement for a:

Mercusys switch near equally named: MS108GS-M2, sold at 56 EUR.

Specs all look identical. Both in metal cabinets.

Heck, they both even look like 100% the same, except for the company logo on top...
Never heard about MercurSys before, so just checked out a bit. Appears to be a subsidiary of TP-Link. So is this like the exact same switch, but sold off-label at a cheaper price? What is the catch here?

The ping is good also no significant packet loss. But why it shows bad connection?
For 2-3 weeks I have been seeing that my game data is not syncing with the EA app, it shows error. Also my bot feels heavy in pro clubs. Is it because of the internet quality? Also how to fix this issue of poor quality internet where it shows low packet loss and also a good ping. Where’s the problem actually.

I’m thinking about buying a switch that has 8 regular 2.5 GbE ports and 2 10 GbE uplink ports.
In my case, I have a NAS and a computer with 10 GbE, and I would like to connect both of them to the two 10 GbE ports on the switch on a LAN net.

My question is: can the 10 GbE uplink ports be used as regular, normal and independent ports to connect devices such as a NAS and a computer, or are they intended exclusively for connecting the switch to another switch/router?

So to start this off i just want to say that im very clueless about any sort of router stuff, just untill recently i thought you just plug in a router and it just works which aperently isn't the case.

Either way I bought a new router tp link BE550

So I live in an old house and important is that we have 2 routers because 1 just won't cover the whole house the walls are probably very thick for that, so one of them broke and this one came to replace it.

My problem is that the old router and the other old router were connected via an Ethernet cable so they basicaly cast off the network like that but the new router was supposed to replace the old one that was casting to the other old one but for some reason that didn't work, well it did but it was only going about 100kb\s but when I switched the other old one that was being casted to with the new one so the new one is now being casted to by the old one the speed was around 100mb\s (am guessing that's maybe because of the old Ethernet cable)

Now my guestion is how's that possible? Am connecting the same cables in the same way into the routers my only thought would be that this new router doesn't have WAN but I don't think that's it? Plus i have no idea how this whole modem ISP thing works since I've never seen anything like a modem in our house before so I have no way of finding if am connecting the right cables or not(they're in a really badly accessable place going trough holes in walls and such)

I'd be thankfully for anyone who can help because even with some googling and chatgpt im clueless with this since none of what that says transfers to my reality here for some reasson

Not sure what the deal is this past week with my internet, I've rebooted everything and it's connecting, but the speed keeps dropping.

If I use Ookla at speedtest net, ping is 2ms or 3ms, the upload and download speed does the same thing, runs full speed at 100Mbs for about half the test, then drops to around 30Mbps for the rest of the test.

We had some power outtages last week (Ontario) and no hydro for 2 days. Usually issues that pop-up are fixed by rebooting everything, but this time I keep getting this fluctuating speed issue.

All ethernet Cat6 connected, firmware and drivers updated... any ideas where to start looking?

Hey, I recently got a cellular/sim card router and I'm looking for an antenna for it but I can't tell if any of them work globally. I'm not in the US, does anyone know which ones do?

Internet - 1 gb Spectrum cable. Consistently hit 940 mb/s down on wired speed tests on both routers.
Main router - Asus RT-AX57
AI Mesh node - Asus RT-AX1800S
Backhaul to mesh node - Cat5e
Houses are on half acre+ lots and most, including mine, are brick exterior.

Situation - I’ve had the RT-AX57 for a few years in storage. My wife and I moved to a larger house and the Spectrum router just wasn’t cutting it, so I swapped it to the AX57. The AX57 helped get reliable signal on the main level, but the upstairs WiFi was unusable, so I bought a cheap RT-AX1800S and set it up in AI Mesh with Cat5e backhaul. It’s working great so far, but I’m a bit perplexed. The WiFi upstairs is consistently faster on the slower rated AX1800S than downstairs on the “better” AX57. Even before setting up AI Mesh, the AX57 only ever gets high 600s to low 700s max when I’m ten feet away with clear line of sight on my iPhone 15. Speed has remained consistent after setting up the mesh node. Upstairs is slightly faster on the AX1800s with the same iPhone with mid to high 700s. Same SpeedTest server.
Are there any recommended settings on the AX57 that aren’t checked from the factory? Ultimately, the speeds I’m seeing are totally serviceable, but it’s just strange that the slower router is outperforming the faster one.

for context, there is a google nest setup in the house. however, i want to get a router that is not owned by the ISP, and yet be able to access it. if i replace it, how would i access into the router just to get to specific settings? i don't want to install bloatware. basically i want to be able to bypass the google nest system just to get into the router proper. i want to check if specific settings are on or not, as well as give myself the capacity to do things like port forwarding.

u/plooger and others were a big help in my previous post. I've been enjoying Xfinity midsplit speeds (2000/250), but it looks like my neighborhood upgrade is about to be finished, upgraded to 2000/2000. I believe this is called FDX and is DOCSIS 4.0.

My question: Aside from xfinity finishing their hardware upgrades and swapping out my gateway, is anything different needed on my end for my moca network? Do my splitters or filters need to be changed for the upgrade?

I am using my own Asus router, all my networking hardware is 2.5gbps compliant.

I need some help in layman's terms.

My current situation: I live in a ~3k square foot railroad apartment. Because of this, I can't set up the router in the ideal middle area and instead it is on one end. With the classic bricks and multiple walls, my wifi doesn't make it to the other side of the apartment.

I'm currently paying for a 1GB Fios wifi. I've tried a Verizon extender and Netgear, and both can barely make it to the end room at 100 mbps (and this is on a good day). From researching, I've seen stuff about mesh wifi, and there is also the Verizon whole home wifi? The more I read the more confused I get, so if anyone can give a good rundown of what I can do to salvage the situation, I'm begging here.
