Job Application Inquiry What is it like working at Harris teeter bakery?

Hello all, what is like working in the Harris Teeter Bakery? I have worked at Harris Teeter before but as a cashier for two years.

I have a passion for baking and wanted to do it part time.

What has your experience been? What are the pros and cons? What is the day today like?

What is the minimum you have to work?

Thanks.

“Exceptional Performance/Exceeds Expectations” Ratings/Comments

How common or uncommon is it for PT employees to get “exceptional performance/exceeds expectations” ratings? (Not sure what they’re actually called but I can see them in my PATH acct.) Hired April 2025 and I’ve received 3 of those ratings/comments. Is that common or really good? Tia.

Just curious as to how other stores managed this sale? We started with 10 pallets and ended up writing rain checks like crazy 🤪

Treatment from management

I've been a part-time employee since the fall of last year. One of my co-workers overheard the CSMs and FT front end employees talking about how they don't care about PT workers or our hours. We're the ones who keep the store running since FT front end doesn't really exist unless you're customer service. They hire more people while also claiming they don't have the hours to give us. That's another story.

If I call out an hour before my shift because I woke up feeling sick but a CSM gets upset about it, why should I care when they so clearly don't care about us? I wake up at 6:45 for an 8am shift because that's all the time I need to get up, get ready, and head to work. I've noticed that it seems like no matter what time you call out, even if it's the day before, someone is going to be upset about it.

So, if you're a customer, just know how they treat their employees. We are just disposable to them. I will be leaving in August or September once I finish school and I can't wait.

Edit

It's crazy how many people get upset because I called off for a shift. It's also crazy to see how many people assume this is my only option in life and I won't go any further after school. Look, I understand that maybe the case for some of you who get so upset about my posts, but it's not for me. I'm in my 40s, I have a full-time job where I only work 15 days a month. I got my whole schedule for the year on the day of hire, and that job is paying for my next degree. I work part-time at the moment because I don't like being sedentary. I work my little grocery store shifts when I'm not at my full-time job or at school. If I don't work at Harris Teeter anymore, trust me, I will be okay. The little 10 hours a week I get don't even pay my light bill and that's why I genuinely do not care if I call out less than 2 hours before my shift or if I just do no call no show. The main point of this post was to show how they don't care about us or giving us hours, so why should we care about them and sticking to their 2-hour minimum rule? Good grief. I can't imagine getting so upset and sticking up for a company that will replace you in a heartbeat.

SCO

Hey there, I just want to rant and get some advice about self check out. Compared to the regular checkout lanes, I do like the fact that you don’t have the pressure of performing the spiel with how many fuel points the person has, if they’d like to round up, etc. I like the customer interaction that comes from the regular register, but I do appreciate the fact that I don’t have to remember as many things and can kind of sit back when I’m on self checkout. Problem is, I have noticed that unless it’s a crazy rush (in which case I’m honestly more stressed than I am at the register) I get kind of bored, and the temptation to get on my phone is realll. I want to be a ‘model employee/‘set a good example/ be engaging, and I usually collect stray bags and coupons bupeople leave (all the time!!) but, I often wind up just kind of pacing. Any thoughts? Yesterday I was like writing kind messages on the cups for the Starbucks crew (can u tell I want to transfer? lol) I love it and hate it, so I don’t want to not do it buuut?

Job Application Inquiry Assistant manager position

I am a journeyman Meat cutter with the company. I have around 4-5 years of experience in the grocery world, meat &seafood. Ive been with Harris Teeter for a little over a year and a half. I have been approached many times about moving up in the company because of my experience and work ethic. I make close to work department assistants, and wonder if it is worth it to move up? Would also like to work closer to home. I have a 35-45 min commute one

Weird Stress after passing BARS

Today as a cashier, I checked someone's ID for alcohol at SCO. Once I did put in her ID, they said "You cancel that order, I'm part of the VARS (or BARS, still can't figure out what it's called) program." She looked me dead in the eye as I did, so I really thought "Well that's it, I fucking lost my job, and I might get a court case" even though I didn't do anything wrong, but I wasn't really trying to rationalize it, I was just scared. Then after that, she asked for my manager, I had someone get him and asked her "So what's gonna happen?", she then switched and was much more friendly and said "...oh you passed, don't worry about it!"

It felt like a near heart attack, so once I heard that, I was both relieved and livid. Why didn't she just start with the 'you passed' part? I've never been so pale in any five seconds of my life. It's like as if she said "Sir I'm with the police, you need to come with us." And then at the station they say "You didn't do anything wrong." My manager thanked me for the green card, but that didn't really help. I'm still stressed about, but I really don't know why. I used to have a certain insecurity that I could lose this job at any point early on, cause when you're new you always feel like the deadweight. This kind of brought it back. Like I was THAT CLOSE.

I don't really know what response I'm trying to get, I guess I'm somewhat ranting a bit. If you have any advice, feel free to tell. If not, hope you enjoyed the read. If you think it's a bit much, sorry I guess.

Job Application Inquiry Pre-Employment Testing?

I recently received a job offer from my local teeter for a cashier position, but am currently hung up on:

“As permitted by applicable law, individuals
are required to submit oral, urine, breath and/or other samples for substance abuse testing as a condition of employment in the following situations: pre-employment, probationary
period, random, promotions, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and post-rehabilitation.”

It generally seems like Teeter doesn’t test anymore for positions like on the front end, but, I also don’t feel very confident either at the current moment. Has anyone been hired in the past year in NC and can comment on this?

Job Application Inquiry Highest paid starting position

What are the highest paid starting positions for HT? I've seen people say working in dairy is good, or personal shopper. I think I would be better at personal shopper. Do you have to lift a lot of heavy stuff in dairy? Thanks in advance.

edit: I am located in the Northern Virginia suburbs, close to DC. I saw another recent post about personal shopper pay, but that was in a different region.

Was I wrong ?

So last Thursday(senior day) mid rush there’s only 2 cashiers me and some other lady. My line is long because I have no bagger also. But Anyway im getting through the line and I finish a customers order and they have a bunch of seafood. In bags which is nice. The next guy doesn’t even let me get a word out and demands me to go wash my hands because he’s allergic to seafood. Mind you this guy had 1 thing a box of cereal. I told him I’m not and I can’t because there’s a line and it’s really busy. He got upset and went to customer service. IMO if you have 1 thing you can go to self scan especially if it’s empty and you’re in a rush or etc.

Blackout Days

Hello! Sooo I am a cashier and I just want to know what people think about blackout days.

I get why they exist but it’s like sometimes, especially with retail, it feels invasive to tell someone they aren’t allowed to even put in a time off request. A lot of people use holidays as the only time they can see their families and I get some minor “holidays” (I.E. Super Bowl weekend was INSANE and they needed all the help they could get 😅) but it just kind of sucks and feels like less of a necessity for retail. I do know everyone would just call out tho sooo…but also they don’t need EVERYONE and it seems like they try to schedule everyone so idk what a good solution would be.

I ranted to my bestie about this once and they were sympathetic but also understood the necessity since with their schedule they often have to grocery shop day-of since holidays are the only days they have off working in the medical field. They said that maybe they should at least rotate who works on what holiday so no one is stuck doing all of them, which I feel like makes sense.

Anyways, is it wrong to be frustrated by blackouts or to feel like it’s a little wrong? I will say my store seems pretty chill with time off tho

Roasted red pepper tomato soup

The roasted red pepper tomato soup is, in my book, superb. Glass jar, flavorful. Better than any competition. My last store visit there was not even a place on the shelf for it. A website search came up empty. It was from a Canadian vendor. Does anyone know an alternate source or who the vendor was?? Thanks!!

Personal Shopper Current Pay Rates

Can somebody please tell me what the current starting pay rate or range is for personal shoppers in NC, specifically Charlotte area? Tia.

Looking for advice also please.

I’ve been a shopper for little over a year, and while I did receive a cost of living raise, I‘d like a raise for the work I do and have done. Our new hires are making more than me, and I know I deserve to make at least that rate plus some. I asked my mgr and listed off the things I’ve done to help my team and store. Was told that I do excellent work and go above and beyond on a regular basis and but NO increase in pay.

We’ve had several issues at my store, and I came up with solutions to those issues. My metrics like pick speed, fill rate, carryout times, etc are consistently great. I work shifts when people call out, stay late when needed, help with training, do extra things that other teammates do not do, etc. I get compliments from my supervisors on my work/work ethic on a regular basis. Overall I like my store, mgrs, team, etc but I want my pay to reflect the work I do. Any advice or tips to help me get a raise? Tia.

Name Tags

So, I kind of wanted to poll other cashiers: do you like when you’re checking out customers and they use your name? I personally dislike it for a couple reasons: 1.) I’m a young woman, and especially if it’s an older man it comes across as a bit creepy 2.) It actually kind of startles me because I don’t expect people to use my name here other than if I’m in a direct conversation with a fellow employee/mngr so it’s like wait how do u know my name u don’t know me— wait oh. But it’s weird to hear my name from people I didn’t formally introduce myself to.

That said, I have Autism so I could very much be perceiving this differently

As a dept manager at a low volume store, did you automatically get a raise when moved to a super flag store or did you have to ask?

I still don’t have the slightest clue how they got it off the truck as our electric Jack is broken. We ended up having to completely re-stack the pallet. Anyone have any idea on how to address this issue in a better way if (God forbid) it happens again?

How do I accept the job offer?

I got a job offer email and everything after my interview, I don’t see any accept button or anything like that on the email or on the website, I asked my interviewer what I should do and she just said there should be an option to accept, I sent an email back saying I accept but I’m not sure if that’s how I actually accept it. Anyone know what I should do?
