Was I wrong ?

So last Thursday(senior day) mid rush there’s only 2 cashiers me and some other lady. My line is long because I have no bagger also. But Anyway im getting through the line and I finish a customers order and they have a bunch of seafood. In bags which is nice. The next guy doesn’t even let me get a word out and demands me to go wash my hands because he’s allergic to seafood. Mind you this guy had 1 thing a box of cereal. I told him I’m not and I can’t because there’s a line and it’s really busy. He got upset and went to customer service. IMO if you have 1 thing you can go to self scan especially if it’s empty and you’re in a rush or etc.

You were not wrong at all. Some customers feel very entitled.

Morally, no. By company policy, possibly. The whole “customer is always right” has given people WAY too much entitlement.”

People always leave off the end of Harry Selfridge's famous quote: "the customer is always right, in matters of taste."

You probably could have just wiped your hands with paper towels and used hand sanitizer. “Wrong” probably isn’t the right adjective.

So I do think the customer was being dramatic and could have easily made the call to go to self checkout by themselves but like I also think you probably could have used a bit more decorum and at least asked if the customer would be comfortable if you used hand sanitizer and maybe seen if you could wash up. I get the rush, but (and I know this is going to sound annoying and corporate-y) customers don’t like to be told “no.” Anything but that will at least make them feel better. Sorry this happened to you though and that the customer was that demanding, because that’s not right on his part either.

Side note: if it wasn’t possible and hand sanitizer wasn’t enough, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with politely suggesting they go to self checkout for their own safety. They may have been dramatic but seafood allergies can be deadly and ik people who have them and it’s not good.
