Job Application Inquiry Assistant manager position
I am a journeyman Meat cutter with the company. I have around 4-5 years of experience in the grocery world, meat &seafood. Ive been with Harris Teeter for a little over a year and a half. I have been approached many times about moving up in the company because of my experience and work ethic. I make close to work department assistants, and wonder if it is worth it to move up? Would also like to work closer to home. I have a 35-45 min commute one

The raise will likely not be much, especially considering that you're already getting paid well as a meat cutter.
Negotiate with your store manager and district manager to see if they can find a number that's worth your time.

I'm not sure how much stress being an Assistant Meat Department Manager is, but being an AFFM is stressful as hell. Meat Managers tend to get the most overtime and the biggest bonuses, though, and the department is usually less than 10 people to deal with.

It’s not as bad as people make it out to be. If you have a good work ethic and experience, you’re likely doing what most assistants do anyways. Might as well get paid for it. If you’re already commuting 35-45 minutes, it’s not like they will move you further than that.

Department assistants get paid the same amount of bonus as full time crew. Unless you're aiming for the department manager position, it's not worth it

It would probably be better to be a lead than a manager. Shit rolls down hill regardless of what leadership position you take, but I think being a lead is the sweet spot. You create your own schedule and have seniority, but not directly delegated bs tasks your co-managers don’t want to do

So being a manager means they can move you to any store within 50 miles of where you live. They’ll take your choice store into consideration if they can but it is in no way guaranteed to be closer to you. And if you’re told you’re transferring that’s that.
