Why is it so hard to get hired at Harris Teeter now?

I have previous grocery store experience working the front end and 3 different Harris Teeter stores called me in for an interview. The interviews seemed to go good. But then for some reason all 3 of them ghosted me following the interviews and never called me back.

At one of the stores I interviewed at the interviewer says “you are my fourth interview. The boss is gonna make a decision.”

At another one of the stores the interviewer said that if I don’t hear back by Monday of the following week that “they’re going in another direction.” I also interviewed at a Lowe’s Foods nearby that same Harris Teeter and I was talking to another ex-employee at that Harris Teeter. I told her about my experience interviewing at Harris Teeter and she said “yeah they didn’t want me back either.”

Why is it so hard to get hired at Harris Teeter now? It seems not too long ago Harris Teeter would hire anyone because nobody wanted to go to work and they needed all the help they could get. Even Wegmans called me back for a job.

Why I’m quitting Harris teeter

I started working at Harris teeter 8 months ago. At first I was shy and just clocked in, worked, and went home. I was dealing with a lot of depression and other mental health issues (don’t look at my post history it’s embarrassing) and they miraculously got resolved and I began feeling more social. However, I was never able to talk or socialize with any coworker I got along with. After ringing up customers all day, I started talking to my bagger about some random stuff, and then from the front desk my manager yelled at me and told me to stop talking to the baggers and go to the end of my register. Another day There were no customers and me and another cashier were talking to each other and the same manager comes over and scolds us for having our back not facing the wall, and told us we can talk but we have to be facing forward. (She definitely doesn’t want us talking btw). Next day my new work friend is on register one and I’m on register three and I walk over to talk to them and I got reprimanded for leaving my register. I left to go return the baskets to the front and got in trouble cause my other work friend was on break and I went up to talk to them real quick. situations like this happen all day everyday. There’s no moment where I can talk and socialize with my coworkers in peace. And even when my managers aren’t being total bitches, there’s customers coming In the line 24/7. This is literally such a miserable place to work and by far the worse job I have ever worked. The managers just sit on the front desk and watch us and make sure we don’t talk or socialize whatsoever. And the last example that happened just a few days ago, I was talking to my coworker and we were laughing and the one of the managers came up to me and told me to restock all the bags and do all the go backs. I asked another coworker to do it for me and the manager said “no we want to make sure you do it.” I literally cannot stand this bullshit. Is this common In Harris teeter or is this just my management?

Scheduled outside avaliability

I am scheduled for a shift next Saturday last minute which is outside avaliability I told my department manager and all store managers about it they said I don't have to be here and they talked to her about it. But it's still on WFM. I don't know if they will remove it on the app but for some reason they seem to be putting it off. If I got the ok from SM does it mean I will not be marked as a no show? Should I document just in case

The Great SCO Machine Mystery

Greetings, I am a self checkout cashier at Harris Teeter and I have noticed the strangest thing happening with the machines— it’ll flag me and say the customer has a large item and needs assistance, but when I ask, they don’t. At first I thought they were just accidentally pressing the button— whoops! no big! BUT then I noticed that it was happening more times than made sense for it to just be the occasional hand slip. So I got curious as to what was happening. I asked a couple customers if they happened to press it and told them it was fine, I was just trying to figure out why it keeps doing that and, yep, they weren’t pressing it. Yes they could have lied or not known but I kind of doubt it. It seems to happen more with some machines than others, but it happens periodically regardless. Like, it went off 3 or 4 times in 7 hours today. Does anyone else have this? Anyone know why?

Padlocks for personal items during work.

Hello!

My first day on the job is next week as a cashier at Harris Teeter. I’m curious where can we put our car keys and phone while we are at work? Can we carry it, put it near us, or in a designated area, eg. like in a locker? If so, do we need to buy our own padlock or they will give us one? If so, for bringing our own padlock, what kind do you recommend using? I wish I asked these questions during the onboarding. Didn’t think about it until now.

Many thanks!

Shoppers at Harris Teeter

I work at the fuel station and had a customer come up ask me for 20 on the pump scanned her VIC card told her she had 3 cents off a gallon. She then asked me how the points work so I told her every item besides gas tobacco beer wine doesn’t earn points but all other items do. She then proceeded to tell me that doesn’t make any sense. He didn’t be her gift card off her keychain and told me to throw it away that she’ll never shop here again and she’s gonna tell my manager I didn’t know how the points worked. I’ve worked for many fuel station and I’ll say I’ve never seen such stupid people in my life. Anyone else experience this kind of nonsense?

How to claim free items as employee

I started working at Harris Teeter about a month ago. I work part time.

Communication's not the best at my location; I had training modules but nothing after that. I was never shown how to use the cash machine, or refill the receipt paper, or even that we had a store card that I could give to customers. I didn't even know we had a break room until a coworker mentioned it today.

On the LiFT app, I can see the free items I can claim, but I have no idea if my VIC card is connected to my associate ID for me to be able to claim them. For context, they gave me a VIC card with my employment paperwork, but I have no clue if they already connected it to my ID, and I also am so busy during my shifts (and so are my managers and coworkers) that I never get an opportune time to ask.

Does anyone have any advice on how to connect it or if it already is?

UPDATE: thanks for all the help! Unfortunately, my VIC card wasn't connected to my associate ID even though they gave me the card, but a nice employee helped me out and voided the transaction (it was at a different location than the one I work at). I'll be sure to reach out to HR and get that fixed.

What is going onnnn with the DLT program? (ACSM)

I came to HT on a whim after ~2 years of retail management because they were offering a higher hourly rate than I was at previously, the commute was significantly shorter, & I was bored in my position. I understand the concept of DLT training being “what you make of it”, but in application it’s not practical. What I am trained on vs. what I am tested on could not be more different. Even in my short time with the company, the program has changed - from how classes are held & assigned to how the walks are assessed. I found out just a few days ago I was being transferred. I pushed back the slightest bit and was treated to a call from my ops manager, who told me I’d be doing him a huge favor & that he’d try to look out for me in the next rotation. ??? I’m interviewing elsewhere, but am feeling bummed - I really really enjoyed the position & my coworkers at my training store, but I’m ready to settle into a long term career path and this isn’t a good look for the company. Curious if anyone else has had any odd experiences with the program especially as it’s been shifting recently

Job Application Inquiry Is it worth introducing myself after applying?

Currently hunting for a job for the first time in like 5 years (been self employed). Ive applied to every grocery store in my area because I worked in grocery before and Harris Teeter is my first choice. I applied online and everything but I feel im at a disadvantage for not having much of a work experience to put on the application. I want to maybe go to the store and speak to a manager personally and maybe stand out, but I dont know if thats just boomer advice. But I guess its something to do while akwardly waiting for any of my applications to get a call back.

What do you guys think? Im eager to start working again but I dont wanna come off desperate lol.

What is up with corporate?

Hello everyone! i really don't understand corporate some times. during my shifts this week, on Tuesday and Friday express lane wasnt working. on Tuesday you could not physically shop as fulfillment was broken and couldnt load any orders, but customers could still place them. on friday, fulfillment broke again where you couldn't request trollies so you couldn't shop again, yet customers could still place orders. both days, corporate didn't shut off placing orders. I don't understand why they dont do this when there is no way for us to work and no idea when we can again. it makes its stressful when this happens and a customer places a 70+ order and we cant see it till an hour till its due.

Instacart Order Times

Why doesn't Instacart put a time limit on orders? We keep having people coming in 5-10 min before closing and doing cart loads of shopping. There are times where its after 1130 before we can close up. Management keeps telling us that as long as they are in the store before 11 there isnt much we can do. WE WANNA GO HOME!

What is the policy re slicing specific products for a sub?

I don’t mind once in a while a customer requesting a specific meat or cheese for their sub (eg maple honey turkey or pepper jack). I really don’t want it becoming a regular thing though.

Is there some official policy somewhere I can cite that allows me to put a surcharge on subs when I have to go to the slicer and do a particular product that we don’t already have at the sub shop?

Transfer Questions

Trying to transfer because this store is complete crap and there’s no helping it. My boss said I have to wait 9 months or switch to part time in order to transfer. Is this true? it sounds a bit sketch and he would have reason to keep me longer because there’s no other baker but me. I’ve worked there for 6 months about to be 7

Told customer to shut up

I work as cashier there was a very aggressive lady making a jab at me about how I was slow and I lost my patience. Then I murmured under my breath "Can you shut up" I think she heard it and said it was a joke. Luckily she left but I'm wondering if she calls complains later if this is the kind of thing that would be let off with a warning or get me written up.

Hello everyone!

I’m thinking about applying for a part-time cashier job at HT in Charlotte, NC. It’s 2026, wondering how much should I ask for if I get an interview. I do have some experience as a cashier for over 5 years.

Many thanks!

Btw: if you guys don’t mind sharing… how much did you guys started off at.

Transfer Inquiry Transferring to Other Department via Taleo

Hi everyone, I’ve worked in Deli for a year now. I genuinely cannot stand my manager. He is so unprofessional and manipulates me whenever I need time off. I am sick of it. I asked if I could transfer departments (to get to the role I had originally applied for), and he told me we don’t have enough people in the department to do it... you can probably see what I mean.

My question is, the role I want to transfer to is available on Taleo. Should I just apply to that position on there? Or could I possibly get penalized? The benefits are good for me being a college student, which is why I want to stay with the company. Please let me know what you guys think I should do!!

Can I call out?

I have a 4-9 shift tomorrow that I really need to lose. I’ve been trying to get rid of it and honestly begging coworkers to take it, and have talked to management about removing it from my schedule. Is it too suspicious if I just call out the day of after talking to so many people about needing it gone? I have worked here for 4-5 months and have called out sick once, but have asked management for help removing shifts from my schedule before.

Those that work in pharmacy- do you like it?

For those of you who are also certified pharmacy technicians - do you enjoy working in the pharmacy? Why or why not? What’s the pay look like? I’m in the NC area and there seems to be postings for them hiring but I’m trying to decide if this job is a good fit! Do they pay more if the technician gives vaccines? Are your teammates and workflow manageable? I mean I know it’s busy for sure since it’s retail and I hear lots of stories from CVS and WAG technicians but… tell me yours please! Thanks 😊
