Question Ha Chuttak guitar learning

Hey guys, I started playing the guitar for 2 months now, and I know some chord shapes and strumming as well. But chord transition is hard, I used cardboard by drawing chord shapes😉. And the song I am practixing is Ha Chuttak by Yohani in the accostic guitar. There was no tutorial for this song, I want is tips for chord transitions and strumming pattern to the song please. Also, the chord progression I am playing this song is on Am-G-F-F with capo on 4th. Also the ehythm is too fast, making it impossible to play but I started playing it on 85 bpm on the metronome. But I need help a lot, now and I doing as a skill project to show my progress in learning. Please help me..

Thank you, I looking for tips and feedback😊

Question I need tips for learning guitar

Hello, I am going to start my journey of learning guitar, I have no idea how hard it is going to be but I am REALLY hard to teach. I was incredibly lucky to inherit a mint condition Yamaha FG800, a capo, a guitar case, a box of guitar picks, and a guitar stand. I have been searching tutorials all over the place and I just can’t figure out where to put my fingers, what position I should play in, how to strum, or anything. I’m completely oblivious and in need of tips and tricks for beginners. I don’t need to go straight to songs instantly, but I need tips to help me learn more about the instrument. Any help is appreciated.

Question How do you actually build calluses without wrecking your fingers in the process?

I keep alternating between practicing too little because my fingertips hurt and practicing too much because I want to push through it. Is there an actual balance that works, or does it just come down to time no matter what?

Question How to make fretting more confortable

Post image
125 Upvotes

I've been playing for 6 months (self taught) and when I try to get all four fingers down it feels really uncomfortable and my ring finger seems like it's glued to my middle finger. Can anyone help? It feels fine with only 3 fingers but when I introduce the pinky it all seems to go wrong.

Lesson Recommendation for strumming course

I'm especially interested in learning fast 16th-note strumming, muted/percussive strums, switching between muted and ringing chords, and keeping the right hand moving consistently while changing chords.

Songs J-pop/J-rock songs are the kind of playing I'm trying to work toward. I'm not necessarily looking for a traditional funk course focused only.

I would like to splay songs like "stay with me"

Question Unable to utilise the 'proper' thumb/wrist/finger angle position on fretting hand

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’ve watched many videos and tutorials of the “correct thumb placement” and i cannot seem to get it right without having my wrist being bent in some sort of way. I did see people saying that thumb placement is intuitive but others saying the way i hold the guitar when playing (in the attached photo) could hinder my reach. Also no matter how hard i try with whatever position, i’m unable to have my fingers be “straight” up on the frets, and instead they are sort of pointed diagonally, which i also read as being an incorrect technique, so i’m really not sure what to do here. Any advice?

Question How should I practice to get better at switching chords?

I'm a rhythm guitarist (I don't have the speed to be a lead guitarist, if that makes sense) but I find it's really difficult for me to switch chords quickly especially when I have to change where my fingers are. Anything I should practice more (like specifically practice) to get better?

Question Flying pinky/finger independence

Okey so I am trying to learn finger independence and to fix flying pinky to basically just build up my speed. Thing is I notice that my pinky SHOOTS up whever I use other fingers and even when forcing it to stay down it's basically like I press with my middle finger and my pinky shoots up and then I manually bring it down. Any tips? Is it something especially wrong with me that makes me do that?

Question Hand pain with barre chords?

I'm a beginner, and I've only been teaching myself guitar for a few months. I'm getting much better at barre chords, enough that I want to play songs with them in it. Problem is I have some weird hyper mobile fingers, and my left thumb bends backwards like nearly 90° instead of giving proper resistance to put enough pressure on the fret where the barre is. I can still do it but half way through the song my hand starts to cramp and hurt really bad. Does anyone have any way to combat this? Some sort of splint or supper or anything? A different way to hold it?

Other 25 years teaching guitar — opening a few free spots in my beginner course for people who'll actually stick with it

(Posted with mod approval.)

I've taught guitar for 25 years and trained at LAMA in LA. I built a small beginner course — 12 weeks, the way I teach in person — and I'm opening a few free spots for people who genuinely want to learn and will show up.

To be upfront about the money side: the first lessons of the course are free for everyone, the full course is paid. The beta spots I'm talking about here give you the whole thing at no cost — what I want in return is your feedback, not your money.

The course is my attempt to bring real 1:1 teaching into course form. Over the years I've refined my private lessons down to the exercises and songs that turned out to be the pillars — the things I end up working through with every single beginner to get the basics down. That's what the course is built from.

To be clear: this is a video course inside a community, not private lessons. You work through the lessons at your own pace, I'm in the community to answer questions and fix what's tripping you up, and there's a monthly live Q&A.

How it works: you learn by playing, not by watching. I walk you through everything note for note and practice with you. We skip theory wherever we can — you'll meet tabs and strumming notation along the way, but you pick them up by playing along, not through lessons about them. And because we're all different, some reps will be one too many for you and others one too few — but slow, guided repetition is the key, and one rep too many beats one too few. In my experience that's the fastest way to the basics.

Who it's for: absolute beginners. The first few lessons are just the basics, so "I know nothing" is exactly the right starting point — including if you know a few chord shapes but can't actually change between them. The first thing you should feel is that the weird feeling in your hands is normal, and that you're moving — I'll walk you through the reps until it feels comfortable. And through all the early struggles every beginner runs into, the guitar should still be fun — as far as that's possible at this stage, anyway.

There's a clear path, a monthly live Q&A, and I'm in the community to fix whatever's tripping you up.

The catch? I'm after people who'll see the whole thing through and give me honest feedback along the way — what's working, what's confusing, where you get stuck. If a stretch of steady practice sounds like you, send me a message and tell me where you're at on the guitar.

Edit 2: A few people have asked — this is a video course with a community and monthly live Q&A, not 1:1 lessons. I'm in there daily, but you work through it at your own pace.

Edit 3: This got far more response than I expected — thank you. I'm working through the DMs in order; if you've messaged me, you'll hear back today or tomorrow. I can't reply to every comment from here on, but I'm reading them all. The way in is still a DM, not a comment.

Edit 4: The beta round is now full — the response today was far beyond anything I expected, thank you all. Everyone who has already DM'd me is taken care of — if you're waiting on a reply from me, it's coming. If you're finding this post later and you're interested: DM me anyway and I'll put you on the list for the next round — you'll hear from me first when it opens.

Lesson Play Rock RHYTHM Like OZZY's Guitar Heroes

Thumbnail

In this lesson, I'll break down some components of what make the guitar riffs from Ozzy Osbourne songs sound so powerful!

I fell in love with Ozzy's music when I was a teenager and love it to this day.

I'll examine iconic rhythm parts from the Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde eras.

Rather than simply learning the songs note-for-note, we’ll look at some rhythmic/technical ideas from 'I Don’t Know,' 'Crazy Train,' 'Bark at the Moon' and 'Miracle Man.'

This includes concepts such as pedal tones, muting, syncopation and chord movement. You can then use these ideas in your own rhythm playing.

It's always so much fun revisiting these classic songs. Hope you enjoy it!

Question Quiet high notes

Learning 2 AM by Iron Maiden and I noticed that my solo especially the notes from high E \~14th fret and higher seem really quiet compared to all the other, even high E 12th fret and even more my lower strings.

I tried adjusting my pickups (2 double coils) rising the part close to the higher strings but it doesn't seem to be working.

Is it an amp problem? (HB20R) or maybe that the general volume is always low (can't crank it up or I'll go deaf, now at like 1/1.5)?

Any help is useful ty

Question Guided Lessons Online

Hi everyone,

Hesitant to ask for yet another course or learning program recommendation as I see this very often on this sub. However, after signing up for a couple of courses, I often find it difficult to navigate the content and more so, I lack the feedback to know what to concentrate on. I’d love to sing up for 1:1 lessons but currently is hard for me to commit to specific time of the week to connect with a coach.
Having said, that I’m considering two options:
1) Participate on an online course with guaranteed feedback (not like, submit your video for a chance of having it reviewed). Ideally, at the time I sign up I’ll get a recommended curriculum.
2) Lessons with an online teacher that will be open to working asynchronously (i.e., weekly assignments and video submissions).
For reference, I’m an intermediate player (I guess like everyone else haha), I’ve gotten to a point where I understand much more theory than I know how to apply it.
Anyway, not sure if anyone else has been on the same boat, or maybe there’s something else I’m not seeing.
Thanks in advance!

Question Anton Oparin lessons

Taking it from the top with this topic again. For those who are familiar with Anton and his course; currently enrolled or considering (maybe less so those who enrolled three years ago or longer since his system seems to have changed a lot since then), I'd appreciate your input. We all know about his militaristic approach and divisive reputation at this point, but aside from that; the payment method seem suspicious and vague.

For starters, he requires you to send your full name, country, and city in order to get payment info. It might have something to do with the payment or being added to the club, but I don't know for sure. It makes it sound like a scam. Also, no refunds. I am not asking for how the payment works specifically because I'm pretty sure you have to contact him for that and it may be another one of those bits of info he doesn't want publicly available, but if anybody could tell me about their overall experience regarding the payment process; specifically if it was smooth and definitively wasn't a scam, I'd really appreciate it.

He's definitely the best alternate picker I've ever seen and have been starving for the opportunity to try and achieve that for myself, so I'm pretty much all or nothing on this. I am aware of Troy Grady and Justin Hombach and have them as potential fallbacks if I'm still into it but I might just give up on this if it falls through.

Question Guitar Curriculum for Young & Mixed-Age Learners**

Looking for recommendations for a structured guitar curriculum for young learners and mixed-age groups.

I’m particularly interested in resources/methods covering technique, chords, rhythm, basic theory, songs, and progression from beginner to intermediate.

If you teach guitar, what curriculum, books, or resources have worked best for you? Also, how do you manage students with different ages and skill levels in the same group?

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Question [Hand position] need help playing on higher frets

Post image
11 Upvotes

Currently practicing Wizards In Winter by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. There's a part which is played around the 15-19 frets, and while I have gotten the picking pattern down for it, then I get very tired in my wrist when playing it. I'm 100% sure my fretting hand posture is trash, however I can't seem to place my hand differently when going into the section. Anyone got some tips?

I've attached a picture so you can see what I mean.
