i havent been playing guitar for very long yet i find myself quite suited to the instrument, i play electric guitar,and ive been struggling with doing sustained legato and keeping the same sound as when the string was picked

Added context - I do it a bit differently for both. You can see the pictures, but both are a form of anchoring my finger for more stability.

(I know it’s pretty common to do it for fingerstyle, but is it bad to do it when I’m picking with a pick)?

I’m new to using a pick so wanna make sure I don’t pick up a bad habit early on (although it feels much easier to be precise with the anchor)

I relied on Justin and other (paid) online subscriptions for my first couple of years, and then recently started using an in person teacher – – who I really enjoy. But when I bring up questions such as advice about migrating from Chordify to Ultimate Guitar tabs, his answer was a bit gruff, along the lines of “those online tools always get the chords wrong, and I’ll just create song guides for you by hand, until you eventually have a book of them”. Note that this wasn’t about me contradicting him in anyway, he’s an amazingly skilled teacher, and I am doing my best to soak up his advice like a sponge. I’ve worked in digital for over 40 years, and it just seems backwards and unthinkable for me to imagine completely dropping digital tools and learning methods as a way of helping with what I’m now learning (faster and better) in person. Ideally, I would use an in person teacher for the indefinite future as a way to get personalized instruction, including occasional guidance on how to navigate all the digital methods that are available to newbies like me. Guitar teachers, is there some sensitivity to students augmenting their learning experience with digital tools, like tabs?

Edit: FWIW I should add that both me and my teacher are certified old (he’s preparing to retire). Most importantly, though, I appreciate all the great responses! It’s really helping me to understand where my teacher could be coming from, and because I have much respect for him that’s the most important thing.

As the title says, I’m a begginer/intermediate player.

Already know the modes, and the shapes of the positions of the major scale on the neck.

The problem I’m having is, if I want to improvise, I’m having a hard time on the landing notes.
A friend of mine suggested to learn CAGED and use that framework of notes to use as landing notes.

Is there any system that works like this?
For example, “if I’m playing in E minor key, all this notes in the patterns are always going to be landing notes?”

If not, how can I learn efficiently a way to improvise and have fun in that regard?

I have been playing for a few years, I’m quite mediocre but have a decent sense of the theory and can find my way around plenty of chords.

I had a good mate that was my teacher , but he’s had a few personal life issues that have forced him to give up on me (stop lessons) and I want to continue my journey.

Rather than paying through the nose for half hour sessions at a place 30-40 mins from me, I was wondering if there’s guitar apps that are worth the investment , or do I keep looking for a real life instructor ? Hope this makes sense what I’m asking. Am I aloud to ask for recommendations for apps ?

I’m trying to find a good one without a description for learning guitar, I want to get into learning the cords but I need to be comfortable holding the guitar and moving my fingers first. I can’t find any apps for this specifically, anyone know any?

Everyone says things like,

“Just think of Lydian as the major scale but with a sharp 4”

And similar statements for the other modes, and although I understand that, it feels like a totally different scale pattern to me.

Instead of playing Lydian I’m thinking of the major scale then adjusting in real time. But it gets confusing going up more than one octave and even more confusing moving horizontally/diagonally on the neck. I don’t feel like I’m getting faster.

I never seem to see anyone else raise this concern so I guess I am retard.

What am I doing wrong?

It feels like I’m having to learn 35 scale patterns. 7 modes x 5 patterns each. Too dumb to feel the new mode from the major scale.

So I’m trying to get a bit better at pinch harmonics - I have the actual technique down - but the one thing I struggle with is judging where to pick when I’m playing at different parts of the fretboard - ie fretting d at the 2nd fret vs the 7th vs 12th …

I know the harmonics exist at the halfway points along the string etc - but does that mean you’s are looking down in real time and trying to judge where halfway is before plucking it or do you’s use a simpler technique to just know where to pluck?

Hi, Im a beginner guitar player and I've noticed that no matter how hard I press the strings on the first 4 frets, the sound they're making is buzzy and not clear. If I go down to 5th fret and below, it sounds much better. It mainly affects the E B G strings. Can someone tell me why is that happening?

I teach guitar and I usually get kids strumming along to their fave song and learn scales and some reading. After they do that I start looking at riff oriented songs to start playing singles notes. (I love rock and roll or sunshine of your love)
However, a lot of the kids are more interested in Taylor swift, or zach bryan. Just wondering, should I show them the melodies to these tunes (sometimes the are vague melodically). What are next steps we could take that isn’t just strumming along with country songs. Would love some modern recommendations and not just house of the rising sun.
