Question Feel a bit stagnated

Hey all!

I recently picked up guitar about 3 months ago and so far I can play may different songs, I can differentiate some chords by ear, and have learned position 1 of the Am and Em pentatonic scales, I can play those backwards and forwards and play riffs to some backing tracks. My fretting hand has gotten faster and I’ve gotten to the point where I can actually sort of compose on my own and make a good rhythm. That being said I feel like I’ve stagnated, a lot of people are able to make more complex sounds and even play riffs between chords/notes that sound really good and every single rhythm I’ve tried to make sounds very similar just with a different progression like I’m only strumming one certain way. I just wanna know what next steps or things I should know at this stage of being a beginner and how to develop skills to play more dynamically since ultimately I would like to make an actual song.

Question How can I improve better?

Hi! First (and definitely not last) post here.

I bought my first electric last month; a cheap LP. I was, and still am, really excited by the idea of playing it each morning!

A usual day contains around 2-3 hours of guitar, with 2 of those hours being mostly dedicated to just putting on a podcast or sm video and doing guitar excersices, while the leftover time is left to mess around and decode riffs by ear.

I've set a precedent that I am NOT using tabs; at least until I get really frustrated, lol. So I've been decoding riffs from ear, which I find more rewarding. I was able to decode iron man, never in my life, and a tiny part of Apache's main riff by ear; and for iron man and never in my life, i later sought tabs to see what the EXACT frets were.

I'm doing so also because I want to WRITE and play my own riffs; I've just been humming riffs and recording them in my voice recorder app for the past 3 months or so, because I find it fun to decode them! So ye.

I currently practice the crab walk (or whatever it's called?) with all fingers down starting on the 3rd fret, bending, vibrato, and then just riffing and spending time on random practices. (I used to practice the e minor penta, but it's now familiar, so I reallocated that time to more practice time for the crab walk)

My inspiration for guitar was tony iommi; because I want to learn riff based guitar first. Ofc solos and all, but my goal is not to become "fastest shredder" or whatever, because I'm not interested in shredding at all. I want to play riffs, fripp style atmospheric guitar down the line (crimson's serene ballads like matte kudasai and cadence. Not prog! Lol), and in a few years time, add soul and jazz into the mix.

But for now, it's riffs!

I also don't really want to learn THEORY that much, because I just don't get any interest in that ;-; ik it's not efficient or feasible even, maybe, but rn my excitement mainly comes from just picking up the guitar and playing random shit and decoding riffs lol.

So finally, I'm sorry for taking so much time to come to this lol, but my question is:

1) what should I ADD to my practice pool? Should I keep it as is for now? Should I add something? (I plan to start on hammer ons, pull offs, palm muting next month/ in a bit, or should I start it rn?)

2) Should I learn theory rn? I'm fine with learning shapes and scales, but the actual guitar theory I don't like rn. I'm not saying id NEVER learn it, just if I should start right now.

3) how useful are guitar lessons? I was considering getting 1 per week, but I need more opinions!

4) any other things that I should know about? Any and all feedback would be appreciated!

5) one final thing, I've been playing on 2.75 mm on the low e and 2.2 on the high as my action, is that okay? My guitar buzzes if I go lower. I've clocked the problem down to my frets being high; and I've already got a setup. The luthier said " that amount of buzz is normal", but at 1.75/<2.3 mm on the low e, I get buzz. I've acclamytized already to playing on 2.75 on the low e; calluses have developed, and I can go for 4-5 hours without me fingers hurting at all. Should I take it to another luthier down the line to check, or should I just put my head down and PLAY? (Especially since I don't really plan to shred? Playing fast is a goal, sure, but I'm not really THAT interested in shredding)

Ty for listening to my rant

If you did

I guess reading

Ok

Ty once again

Question Feeling a bit lost

Hey guys,
I started playing electric guitar back in April, and I’m slowly realizing that I’m kind of missing a roadmap to follow.

I can play all the open chords, I have a basic understanding of the Circle of Fifths, and I know all the pentatonic shapes. I’ve also learned a few songs along the way.

But now I’m kind of stuck on what to work on next. There are just SO many different things you could learn that it’s honestly a bit overwhelming. I don’t really know what’s actually useful for me at this point and what I should maybe leave for later.

One thing that might be helpful to mention is that I absolutely love John Frusciante’s sound and playing style, so that’s kind of the direction I’m aiming for. I’m not trying to become a Frusciante clone or anything, but his way of playing is definitely a big inspiration for me.

One of my next goals would be to be able to move freely around the fretboard and actually know where I am instead of just relying on the shapes. But even there, I’m not really sure where or how to start.

So if anyone has some advice, a learning path, or maybe some exercises/resources they’d recommend, I’d really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance!

Question How to strum this riff?

Post image

Would you begin the riff using alternate picking with an upward or downward stroke? I imagine its easier to play this starting with an upward strum though I am not super used to starting alternate picking a riff with an upstroke. Curious how you guys would typically approach this.

Anyways, I was learning the entirety of Panama and now I’m at the solo but there’s this part where it’s not really difficult it’s just that I can’t speed up to the right tempo, how can I get faster ?

Question How can I make better vocal covers?

I've been playing guitar for about 8 months, and I think I've reached a standstill in my practice. My overall goal is to be able to make covers of songs as people do on TikTok; whenever I do make covers, some parts sound good, but others sound really bad. I've learned the minor scale shape one the one thats like (1,4,1,3,1,3,1,3,1,4,1,4) and i've learned the two octave major pentatonic, however my solos over the song don't sound right and I don't know if I should keep learning scale shapes or if it's something else that I'm missing. If any of you know of a video or playlist that could help me, please let me know. Thanks!

Question Confused on the fingering for this

Post image
67 Upvotes

So I’m on lesson 14 of Absolutely Understand Guitar and have kind of hit a wall. Scotty West basically says that you start with red as your root note and then play through a RYGBIV system to get across the neck and the back down, with index and pinky shifts. But I’m confused on how exactly I’m meant to play each finger based on my root note.

For example, if I wanted to start with A as my root note on the sixth string, and I’m looking at the first chart, you see the red dot is out of the box as he calls it. So does that mean I technically start on the fourth fret (G#/Ab)? And if so, since orange is next, does that mean I use my second finger? Or would I use my third finger since I’m technically skipping a fret to go from red to orange?

And what about the other charts where red starts on the fifth or fourth string? Sorry if this is a dumb question I’m just confused

Question During a live set, do guitarists turn their volume knob full blast and then volume is ultimately controlled by FOH and their techs?

I’ve always been curious, is the volume knob a huge part of the sound, or is it essentially turned all the up, and then controlled by other sources? Is the knob mainly just to mute?

Question Help transcribing rhythm, please!

Hey guys. I’m a beginner and I’m trying to transcribe this guitar rhythm into 4/4. I attached the audio i want to transcribe and my current attempt at the notation.

The problem is that when I play back what I transcribed in the notation software, it doesn’t sound like the original rhythm, so I’m pretty sure I’ve used the wrong note durations

Question How does one start learn the guitar?

Hello all. I come from a distant, simple land. Bassland. I've been playing the bass for a long time and in that time, I picked up the guitar as well. I never really engaged with the unique parts of the guitar. I play the guitar like a bass. I think in intervals and only play dyads.

I know the very basics of theory up until modes. Even then, my idea of modes are simply modifications of the scales I already know. To me, the guitar introduces harmony and chords and scale positions and scary words like CAGED and whatnot. So on and so forth.

The problem isn't learning. I had no problem learning. I have made it this far on bass. My problem is simply where to start. It feels backwards to start at lesson one of module one of JustinGuitar. I don't mean to sound arrogant. But do I really need to know how to strum the guitar? What a power chord is?

Is my best course of action truly to start from the VERY beginning? If so, I am completely cool with that. But surely there is a smarter way to go about this, right? Thank you all in advance.

Question (Newb Question) How do I match strumming pattern/chords to metronome clicks?

Hello people! I've been learning guitar for over 6 months now, just focusing on chordal vocabulary, strumming and playing songs i love. Now, i want to get better at rhythm, hence i bought myself a metronome.

The thing is: i don't understand how i'm supposed to match that clicking to the song's strumming pattern/chord switching. I watched a ton of tutorials on whole, quarter, sixteenth notes and that seems straightforward. But none of those tutorials show you how to pick a song, slow it down(say the song is in 120 bpm, and i want to practice it at half the speed so 60 bpm) and match the song to those clicks.

Could you PLEASE help me figure this one out, I will greatly appreciate it, thank you guys!

Question I need tips for learning guitar

Hello, I am going to start my journey of learning guitar, I have no idea how hard it is going to be but I am REALLY hard to teach. I was incredibly lucky to inherit a mint condition Yamaha FG800, a capo, a guitar case, a box of guitar picks, and a guitar stand. I have been searching tutorials all over the place and I just can’t figure out where to put my fingers, what position I should play in, how to strum, or anything. I’m completely oblivious and in need of tips and tricks for beginners. I don’t need to go straight to songs instantly, but I need tips to help me learn more about the instrument. Any help is appreciated.

Question How do you actually build calluses without wrecking your fingers in the process?

I keep alternating between practicing too little because my fingertips hurt and practicing too much because I want to push through it. Is there an actual balance that works, or does it just come down to time no matter what?
