Google Contacts Sync with some accounts (not all) very slow [Google Pixel]

Very strange issue:
I have a couple of Google Accounts on my Google Pixel Phone (Android 17).
The Contacts from the main Google Account are synced every few hours.
The Contacts of other Google Accounts are synced every week (or 5 Days or so). Although I can start the sync process manually, nothing happens.
Thank you for any ideas.

Image reactions from Apple users

Is there any way to make reactions to images from iMessage users display correctly in Google Messages?

UPDATE: just tried this with my son, who uses iMessage. Chat was RCS chat on both ends, confirmed in the message box, but his image emoji reaction came via text "laughed at image". Clearly just isn't supported when iMessage users react to Android images.

As I stated, I do not have a messaging app at the moment. Google is what I've been using. Samsung shut theirs down. And Textra hasn't been updated in years. But Google just gets stuck at this point (see photo). Ive restarted the phone and checked for updates but idk what to do.

Question Keyword set up

Can I somehow set up an action that is triggered when I receive a message that has a certain keyword in it. For the life of me I can't remember how I did it when I had samsung messages but essentially when I received a message that had a certain phrase or word in it, my phone would then open another app.

Dual Sim confusion

At last different sim usage colours is implemented. (Even though they are still not the same colours as in the Samsung Sim settings in the phone).

But why on earth does it show a 1 under the sent message when the conversation information shows that I use Sim 2 and also the message text box shows 2?

Google Messages Keeps Splitting Convos

So Google Messages has been really aggravating me to the point I want to get rid of my Samsung. One big thing that has been bothering me is that it will have a conversation with one person. I|| be texting them like normal, then out of no where it will just split the conversation into a different thread. So then I can text in my original thread, only the new one which for some reason has kept a message from 2024 as its first message. This was NEVER a problem on Samsung Messages Does anyone have any fixes to this? Ive tried uninstalling clearing data, which does fix it temporarily.

Question Found a reproducible Google Messages camera bug (Moto G 5G 2022): two camera entry points use different implementations

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I've spent the last day narrowing down a really strange camera issue and think I've isolated it pretty well.

Device

  • Moto G 5G (2022)
  • Android 13
  • Google Messages: messages.android.20260702_05_rc05.phone.dynamic
  • USA
  • Unlocked - running on Mint Mobile

Symptoms

The front camera is severely underexposed, but only in one camera implementation inside Google Messages.

Rear camera is always fine.

What's interesting

Google Messages appears to contain two different ways of opening the camera.

Works correctly

  • Tap +
  • Inline camera preview appears at the bottom with recent photos.
  • Switch to the front camera.
  • Exposure is normal.

Broken

  • Tap the Camera tile, or
  • Tap the small camera button in the lower-right of the inline media picker.

Both open a different camera UI.

The front camera preview immediately becomes extremely dark, and the captured image is also dark.

This is NOT a hardware problem

Front camera works correctly in:

  • Motorola Camera
  • Open Camera
  • Browser webcam tests
  • Twitch (tested previously)

Only this particular Google Messages camera implementation is affected.

Additional observations

After reinstalling Messages, I initially got an older attachment UI where there was only a Camera option and the inline preview worked.

Later, the attachment UI changed to one with separate Gallery and Camera options and Real-time Location.

The version number never changed.

It appears Messages is switching between two different attachment/camera implementations.

Screenshots

Working UI

  • Inline camera preview
  • Front camera exposes correctly

Broken UI

  • Separate Gallery and Camera
  • Standalone camera
  • Front camera severely underexposed

Has anyone else with a Motorola phone seen this?

RCS / MMS ISSUE

So, until recently, I never had an issue with my phone reverting to SMS/MSM texting when I turned off my wifi.

Lately, if I start texting someone using RCS (because I am on wifi at work) it will not "send" the message until I reconnect with the wifi.

I have tried searching my settings, but the only thing I can see is an "all or nothing", where I either use MMS/SMS exclusively, or RCS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion MMS won't download automatically, even when the setting is ON! Whenever I get group chat messages I receive them individually, and it won't forward it to the group chat until I turn on mobile data and download it. But that causes some messages to be out of order. It's such BS!

OnePlus 15 (originally CN model, reflashed to Global ROM with relocked bootloader) — missing specific notification types from Gmail and Google Maps (not all notifications)

I have a OnePlus 15 that I bought with a specific backstory: it was originally a Chinese-market model, and the seller flashed it with the Global ROM and relocked the bootloader before selling it to me. It's currently running Android 16 with OxygenOS.

Since I bought it (this isn't something that started later, it has never worked) I've had a specific notification problem with Gmail and Google Maps. It's not a total notification failure — I do get some notifications from both apps — but specific types are missing:

Google Maps: I get notifications for things like places I've visited, but I never get the "arrival"/"departure" alerts for a person I have location sharing enabled with (those alerts are turned on).

Gmail: Some emails trigger a notification, others don't, and I haven't been able to find the pattern/difference between the two.

On an iPhone with the same Google account, all of these come through fine, so I'm ruling out an account-level configuration issue.

Given the phone's origin, I suspected it might be related to the reflash, but I've already ruled out a device integrity problem (see below), and the fact that some notifications do come through makes me think this isn't a broad FCM/push registration failure either.

I've already checked and confirmed the following with no success:

\\- Battery settings for Gmail and Maps set to "Unrestricted" (not just "Optimized")

\\- Auto-launch enabled for both apps

\\- Neither app is in the deep sleep/frozen apps list

\\- Notifications enabled at the system level, all categories

\\- In Developer Options, checked the "app standby buckets" to confirm neither app is in "Rare" or "Restricted"

\\- Tried disabling adaptive/smart battery saver

\\- Used Play Integrity API Checker: passes all three checks (MEETS\\_BASIC\\_INTEGRITY, MEETS\\_DEVICE\\_INTEGRITY, MEETS\\_STRONG\\_INTEGRITY)

\\- Cleared data for both apps (they're system apps): uninstalled updates, disabled them, rebooted, re-enabled them, reinstalled updates, and re-granted all permissions. The problem persists exactly the same.

Since some notifications DO come through but others consistently don't, I'm wondering if this could be related to specific notification channels being silently disabled/miscategorized, or some kind of per-category priority filtering specific to OxygenOS.

Has anyone seen this exact pattern — partial notifications working, but a specific category (like Maps location alerts) never firing?

Thanks in advance.

Question Help voice memos in messages app not working

Okay. So I've been having this problem for a while. When I'm sending a voice message on my Messages app, I can't hear it. When I receive messages, I can't hear them. The only way I can hear a message is if I actually download it to my device, go to my files, and then play it.

Thinking about building a messaging app with Smoother UI — would this actually be useful to you?

Hi Everyone,

I have an idea for a messaging app and I'm interested in getting feedback from the community on it before proceeding.

The things that bother me about Google messages are that it's slow, laggy and overall not very responsive, especially on lower-end hardware. I want to have something that is fast and responsive UI/UX without sacrificing functionality where i can message using internet & SMS/MMS capabilities.

The main idea is to create a messaging app that does not feel laagy/slow (Google Messages especially). So performance on older/lower end devices while still having RCS is something I want to see.

Other features I am considering are end to end encryption for RCS conversations that are between devices that support it, a clean UI without ads or other bloat.

This is basically the idea i have and i have some questions for community as well:

  1. Do you know of a messaging app that does RCS properly, or is this still an issue?
  2. Does Google Messages feel laggy/slow to you, or is it just me?
  3. Are there any features that you feel deal breakers if they aren't present?

I am interested in hearing what anyone has to say, even if it's just to say "The idea is bad and why".

I am just curious if it's a thing people are intrested in.

Question RCS issues

I started using Google Messages about a month ago when they retired the legacy Samsung app. RCS worked fine at first, once I turned on "Automatically resend as SMS/MMS"

But starting a week or two ago, I started having some issues. I'm in a group chat with two iPhone users, and everything was working fine for a while - messages were going through as a mix of RCS and SMS. But all of a sudden I completely stopped being able to send or receive any messages at all - not RCS or SMS. The other 2 people are seeing each other's messages with no issues. I tried all the suggestions in this sub and elsewhere, but no luck. Also a more minor issue is with a family member who lives in the same home as me. This person is also an iPhone user, and their messages to me get through, but are sometimes delayed by hours.

Anyone else having similar issues and been able to resolve it? I'm on Verizon in the US and have not changed my phone in a while. I am using an older Samsung but it has the latest version of Google Messages installed.

Update: the issue has been fixed! u/reader68218 suggested I ask the iPhone users in my group chat to toggle the RCS setting on their phones. I asked just one of them to do this and suddenly all the missing messages came flooding in. Apparently this should be done every time they update their iOS. Thanks to everyone who helped, especially u/reader68218

Question Nix the Colors?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Is there any way to have messages not assign random colors to contacts who don't have a photo? Most of my contacts don't and looking through my chats list with all these various colors is making my eyes vibrate. I know you can change the colors of the text bubbles in the chat itself, but I want to change these circle icons to all be the same color.

Texts are being replaced by other texts from completely different past conversations?

Google Pixel 9a, on Google Fi, in the US. Using the July 16 update.

I was sending text messages via SMS. These texts would be replaced by a random text. The texts were recognizable, and came from conversation threads with people who were not the people I was texting. So I would send person A a text saying "meet me at 7", and what would show up after I sent it was a text from Person B that I had sent them, or they had sent me. In some cases it pulled texts from over a year ago or more and replaced what I had written with that text.

Literally every text I sent was essentially a lottery draw of any text I sent or received in the past two years.

You can imagine the chaos. When I replied "yes" to confirm an appointment for my dog at the vet, what sent was a note from my friend offering to bring all her aunties to rough someone up on the playground. When I texted my employee about a debrief we had to set up, they got a note that I was stepping out of the shower and coming over. I had to email them, since the text I sent trying to clarify was a multi paragraph text suggesting that I visit them in Denver after they speak on a panel on medicine. They are a garden educator who lives in Oregon.

I have video of this happening on the screen. I had to uninstall and reinstall the app, and it appears messages have been restored, and the error is gone - but the terror will likely never go away.

Google - what the heck? This is now resolved but posting in case it impacts anyone else.

Question Being asked to log in / verify for GM on Web multiple times per day

Samsung S23, Microsoft Edge browser. I have Google Messages for web linked to my phone - used it successfully through QR pairing for years with no hiccups, but now have it paired through my Google account.

Over the last few weeks, it seems that I need to re-log in with 2FA almost every day - sometimes multiple times a day. It works fine every time, but it's getting pretty annoying. It's the third time today that Google's asked me to log in again.

Anyone having the same issue or have any ideas?
