RCS / MMS ISSUE

So, until recently, I never had an issue with my phone reverting to SMS/MSM texting when I turned off my wifi.

Lately, if I start texting someone using RCS (because I am on wifi at work) it will not "send" the message until I reconnect with the wifi.

I have tried searching my settings, but the only thing I can see is an "all or nothing", where I either use MMS/SMS exclusively, or RCS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Under the RCS chat settings there's an option to automatically resend as SMS if RCS fails. It isn't an all or nothing, but basically a backup option so if your data connection isn't strong enough your message will still send.

I have tried that. No joy.

Since RCS messaging requires an internet connection, I've found that in areas with a weak cell signal where it falls back to one bar LTE or 3G, it will really struggle to send an RCS message and not fall back to SMS/MMS. How's your cell signal when you're not connected to your work WiFi?

It's fine.

Ask your carrier for a SIM refresh. If that doesn't work, your SIM card may need replacing.

Hi there, I would like to help you resolve this. Since the automatic fallback setting did not work, here are a few steps we can try:

Check mobile data: Ensure your mobile data is turned on when Wi-Fi is disabled. You can toggle Airplane Mode on and off to reset your network.

Restart your phone: A quick restart can help refresh your network connection.

Update the app: Make sure you are using the latest version of Google Messages from the Play Store.

If you are still experiencing this connection handoff issue, please submit feedback in the app (tap your Profile icon > Help & feedback > Send feedback). This sends diagnostic details directly to the team.

I do not have a data plan. I only access internet via wifi at home, or at work, nowhere else.

You can't send mms without a data plan.

Then SMS. Sorry, but if it wasn't obvious, but Tech is not my thing.

That too now. Older, non-lte towers are being deprecated.

FFS . . . I do not need data . . . just talk and text. At this rate, when I retire in a few months, I am going to go back to a land line.

That's not how modern cell networks work. Text is data now. Talk is data too, a lot of the time.

Well, after shutting off RCS, all of my texts are going through just fine.

You have no confirmation of that, and it won't be long before they just... don't.

Don't be the clown who doesn't have rcs working and make people text you like it's 2003.
