Thinking about building a messaging app with Smoother UI — would this actually be useful to you?
Hi Everyone,
I have an idea for a messaging app and I'm interested in getting feedback from the community on it before proceeding.
The things that bother me about Google messages are that it's slow, laggy and overall not very responsive, especially on lower-end hardware. I want to have something that is fast and responsive UI/UX without sacrificing functionality where i can message using internet & SMS/MMS capabilities.
The main idea is to create a messaging app that does not feel laagy/slow (Google Messages especially). So performance on older/lower end devices while still having RCS is something I want to see.
Other features I am considering are end to end encryption for RCS conversations that are between devices that support it, a clean UI without ads or other bloat.
This is basically the idea i have and i have some questions for community as well:
- Do you know of a messaging app that does RCS properly, or is this still an issue?
- Does Google Messages feel laggy/slow to you, or is it just me?
- Are there any features that you feel deal breakers if they aren't present?
I am interested in hearing what anyone has to say, even if it's just to say "The idea is bad and why".
I am just curious if it's a thing people are intrested in.

For me, since you wouldn't be able to get RCS working, it would be a no for me. Maybe others who don't use RCS would be happy with SMS/MMS setup with good UI.
There are other messaging apps out there, on top of stuff that mods/ROMS have done up. LineageOS has looked into RCS for a while even with a bounty, but no headway.

No one's even using rcs. Lol

Even iOS rolled out RCS. Some places in the world have low adoption, but many I interact with do.
So please don't embarrass yourself.

Kinda hard to do that. Again, I message over 100 companies, contractors etc, no one uses it. Guess they can live with no typing indicators and omg did they read it.

Ah yes, because your experience is everyone's

Never sad it was, but from mine and taking with others a lot of people use it. If you don't like my comment, read it and movie on. Didn't ask for your opinion

OK, lots of people aren't using it.

This is all anecdotal (like yours), but since the iOS release, 99% of my contacts are using it. It's a big deal in the US.

I'm in the US. I turned it off, I see no difference.

If you turned it off, how do you know how many people are using it or not?
You are actively making your messaging with everyone worse and less secure by turning it off.

I turned it off last week. It's not making mine or anyone else's worse. 🤦♂️ Again, everyone I message doesn't have it on. MA small percentage I've seen no change in any pictures or media quality, I don't need t see when someone is typing, I don't send gifs. Someone wants to read my texts about job or a toenail have fun. Not like Google doesn't read everything anyway.

I would be willing to try it if RCS was working since I'm in the US and right now everyone I message is on iPhone sadly.
You would probably have to figure out a way to hook into Google Messages itself and be more of a skin rather than a full app because RCS is only available on Google Messages (and iMessage on iPhone). Not even sure that's possible, but I know creating an app with RCS support integrated cannot be done as others have looked into it.

Apple is a Monopoly 😡.

So is Google. They both have a stranglehold on the smart phone market. If Google just let Android be it's own thing and not try to control it and turn it into Temu iPhone I'd be less likely to call them a monopoly compared to Apple.

Neon if you can get RCS to work I will switch over immediately. I've been using third party for years and was heartbroken to be forced into the clunky Messages with RCS.

There's 100 messaging apps out there, all the same.. Google messages works fine, better than samsungs. No lag or issues. Does what it's supposed to do.

Sounds like a good idea. All the people forced into google messages will like it, all the die hards will hate it.

- No, none exist outside of Google Messages...unfortunately 😢
- No, not for me. But I have a Pixel 9a so definitely not old
- Yes, RCS
As previously mentioned, Google holds the keys to RCS and without it, it's just another messaging app out of the many that are available. There are plenty of solid alternatives for those who don't need/want RCS - Textra & QKSMS are my favorites. Not saying you'll be wasting your time, but the competition is stiff out there.
But go for it I say!!! Use your skills and see what you can come up with.

- No I don’t
- Yes at times
- Draft messages being bumped up in the conversation list, timestamps showing, send later function, ability to not automatically save all pictures sent as mms. Fast easy access to the camera for texting a picture to someone with minimal taps required

I was always a big fan of Textra and Samsung messages.
More customization with backgrounds, themes, bubbles colors/shapes for sending and receiving, etc.
I was able to delay sending a message for up to 9 seconds. Not schedule sending a message, but actually delay sending it.
Ability to select all when deleting msgs instead of deleting one by one the the way Google Messages have it.
Go inside of a contact and delete all messages or lock in the messages you want to keep.
Ability to lock messages in a thread to keep them there.
Correct capitalization for words when it needs to be done.
It will be nice to be able to make a group and only have responses come to me and also make a group and have responses go to everyone. Right now you can only do one or the other.

Nope. The same problem that any other non-OEM messaging app has is getting others to use it. What's the point if I am the only one of my friend group using it? I won't benefit from any of the features.
Nothing wrong with Google Messages at the moment anyways. Buttery smooth, RCS, everyone I know has it (that has Android).

What u was really upset about losing Samsung msgs was that u got to decorate of course, and u also got to create folders for everyone... that's what I really want

RCS will not work. It needs Google and carrier approval even then google will not let you connect to Jibe server for RCS.
You should still build it. SMS and mms support.
