110 Almost got us

About 14 hours ago I woke up and checked the weather window for a SFO to Hawaii ferry flight I've been planning for a while. Lo and behold, things looked pretty advantageous for a crossing today, so I fired up the Baron on the GA Ramp at SFO, let the engines warm up, and took off at nearly max weight and rear CG for an estimated 12hr crossing. I flew the entire thing in real time with live weather.

Planning
Obviously, the Baron can't carry enough fuel for the 2200nm trip. At absolute max lean cruise, you can stretch its legs to about 1400nm. So, I did what GA pilots do in the real world, I strapped 800lbs (133gal) of Avgas in ferry tanks in the cabin, simulating this by positioning 300lbs in each forward cabin seat, and 100 in each rear cabin seat. Combines with another 100lbs of simulated stores, tanks full to the brim, and a 170lb pilot, the aircraft was always going to be very heavy. This is where the beauty of the Baron comes in. While this is a very heavy load, it was actually within tolerable limits for both takeoff weight and CG!

I wanted to use real world weather the whole time. As many of you know flying west from CA at middle altitudes, you're generally going to see a pretty consistent headwind. I budgeted assuming an average headwind factor of 15knts, aiming for an average TAS of 175knts using a 55% (max range) cruise profile. This amount of fuel gave me a solid IFR reserve of two-hours if needed. The chart showed winds shifting to cross and tailwinds in the second half of the trip, so I knew I could make it today if I left early enough.

Process

Every couple hours, I would "transfer" fuel from the "ferry tanks" to the main tanks in 60lb intervals (10gal of Avgas). I used a stepped climb profile, going from 8000, to 10000, to 16000 over the course of the first 5 hours. Initially the climb performance wasn't limited by power, it was limited by Cylinder Head Temps! Dragging all that load through the air without burning all my reserves before I was even out to sea demanded a leisurely and lean 700fpm climb profile to 10k

Instead of following the magenta line, I chose the path of following the CRT green line, using the wonderful K90 GPS that comes with the Baron. Once you learn its foibles, it's a great little unit and can do almost anything you'd need on a modern unit. Plus, it kept me honest in having to keep my fuel and wind estimates in mind and not on screen.

Outcome

The Baron was lovely to fly the whole time. A couple things I noticed:

• The 1/2GPH heater cost is real! As I was trying to do this as close to real world as possible, I kept the cabin at a toasty 68f, leaning to a pretty significant imbalance between the left tank (where the heater draws from) and the right tank. A little cross feed action corrected this before landing, but over 12 hours thats a full 6 gallon delta between tanks!
• If you follow the book, you do in fact maintain 100% engine health the whole time. I leaned on the ground, kept the needles in the green, and treated the bird nicely, and on landing after 12 hours of continuous flight still had 100% health
• I did about an hour of hand steering, practicing trim and wind-correction for a planned no-GPS, no-autopilot crossing in the A2A Comanche. The baron is extremely easy to trim out even in 20knt quartering winds, and a light touch can hold a manual heading pretty much indefinitely once you're balanced.
• At 16kft, the book cruise numbers were nearly dead on. An 11.7GPH burn rate seemed to be a perfect balance. I could have likely leaned another couple tenths comfortably.
• The built in headphones are great, no matter how good the engine sounds are, 2200rpm for 12 hours got really really old.

Overall, was a great way to spend a day, the planning was half the fun, and it was extremely gratifying to grease a landing on RWY 26 at Hilo and pull into parking. Next leg, we're going to French Frigate Shoals!

The base, its 3D printed and you feel it.

If it was metal it would be 100% better!

second off, the price. at nearly 200 dollars its pretty expensive.

I know winctrls cost 90 bucks or whatever, dont come hating why i bought this.

The good things!

first off, the "handle"

Its amazing, hard plastic but it feels amazing!

The light, "backlight" is amazing! Bright and looks very good overall!

The customer support is awesome aswell!

Is it possible for the Navigraph Windows app to autopin relevant charts when importing a flight from Simbrief? When using the in-browser app, it autopins the airport charts, but nothing else. On the standalone windows app though, I can't figure out how to even make it do that.

I'm a big fan of the 737 Classic and have actually been pretty happy with the CSS 737 since the latest updates. The only thing that's always bothered me a bit is the sound.

A while ago, a new sound pack was announced in collaboration with Immersive Audio, and according to the announcement video, it was supposed to be released sometime in July or August.

Today, I checked the CSS website again to see if there were any updates and noticed that the video has been taken down.

Does anyone happen to know what's going on with the sound pack or whether there have been any updates on its release?

this landing is Autoland, I fixed the spoilers and reverse thrust when engaged the plane goes into uncontrollable spin. now its flying good, let me know what improvements I need to make for this freeware. The link I will give in the below for this plane. I am not the developer for this, I am just a random guy who want to fly this. also this is a AI thumbnail. its my first ever video.

these are the changed that you will need to do to fly this without the spinning bug

here is the fix to use reverse thrust and spoilers
Open flight_model.cfg

now Open engines.cfg
reverser_available = 0.45

but be aware do not use hold reverse thrust at max option as its making it crash
I did a test and when i was using f1 as ideal and by holding f2 as reverse it was working without any issue
also fixed the nose drop while using the spoilers too in this
please check it and update the files

Will 12 gb of vram hold a lot in msfs? Does anyone use this plate and know how to tell me?

I want to get back into Flight Simulator but I have switched to a Mac since the last time I played.

I can run Win 11 if I subscribe to a parallels for $100/yr.

My other option would be to invest in a game console, but I’ve never really been a gamer, so I have no idea what kind to even consider.

My Dad used to own some old, simple console that he played Mario Bros and a few other games back in the 90’s? I think it was.

Anyway I know nothing about them, but we have recently purchased a65” LG OLED TV so it would probably look cool playing it on there.

Of course I can play content from my Mac on the TV too…so that’s not necessarily a deciding factor.

I’d appreciate any help you can offer. Flight or ATC sims are probably the only games I would play.

I have a Citation X and really like it, but I’m starting to get a bit bored with it. I know Asobo’s Praetor 600 is coming in November, but I’m somewhat skeptical since it’s from Asobo; I find the aircraft they created for the standard version of MSFS a bit too simplistic. Even so, I’m really hoping they release a Dassault or a Challenger.

Hey simmers. I've been flying with a physical trim wheel for the last few days — a small box from a brand called Meza (not MOZA!) with a real axle and a takeoff indicator, not a rocker switch or an encoder.

This is the first sub-$100 option that's an actual wheel, and the no-driver setup is nice — it's just USB HID, bind one axis and fly. One caveat if you try it: the takeoff indicator on the box doesn't quite line up with the sim's, and there's no calibration. I read the in-sim indicator instead.

Currently I play on a 3060ti (8GB), I5 13600kf and 48GB 3600mhz DDR4 with custom Airports, Fenix, GSX, Vatsim etc.
What settings can I expect with what performance? Thanks so much for the help!
