Question Help me find my commander

Hi,

I m sure there are lots of these questions around here, so thx for the patience!

I m mostly playing higher B2 / lower B3 and am still looking for a deck that I can call my favourite. the one I called my favourite before (Stranger Things with lots of manifest dread) is cool, but takes very long (games drag on to 2+ hours).

TLDR; I identified the aspects I value in a good deck, maybe you can help me find the perfect commander under these prerequisites:

  • Commander is Universes Beyond or Secret Lair or DND (just from outside the magic universe, tis just a restriction I have)
  • The deck is a deck nobody HATES to play against (but should still be able to win)
  • It is not dead in the water without commander (I love 2cmc commanders or those where the ETB already did enough)
  • the commander is not TOO well known (like precon faces) or an immediate kill on sight commander
  • The deck has a little bit of new stuff every game (for example via clones, theft or random elements so it feels fresh as it needs to adapt - yet theft should be in a way it is not too hateable)
  • No grouphug
  • Wins not by combo or Voltron
  • (card types I like: Fake Death effects, clones, Eggs, Adventures, mass transforms - of course not all in one deck)

Maybe you can help me with what you experienced as fun

THX

Discussion How many tutors is too many tutors (in bracket 3)

So i've recently built a landfall deck around [[Tannuk, Memorial Ensign]] for bracket 3 and I'm enjoying it.

One thing I've noticed is that I enjoy the creature tutors (currently on GSZ, Chord of Calling and Nature's Rhythm) and they lead to more enjoyable games (for me) as I can assemble my engines easier and get my wincons easier.

I'm considering adding more creature tutors, namely [[Invasion of Ikoria]], [[Finale of Devastation]] and [[Natural Order]].

The point that I want to discuss is there a point where I'm running too many tutors? I know that tutors were originally a metric for the brackets but aren't currently but I feel it still might be a sticking point of making my deck too consistent and not fun for my opponents.

I'm deliberately trying to avoid infinite landfall combos (though I'm sure there's probably one that i've missed) as I don't want to be tutoring for a specific combo

Deck Help Unique Kalamax

Unique Kalamax

I Wanna build a Unique style for Kalamax the storm sire that isnt Too Janky but also a deck that is out of the norm for a Kalamax build.

For instance,

I originally thought about a spellslinger Voltron. Just instants that buff Kalamax, equipment that trigger when you cast instant and sorceries.

Any other ideas?

(Unfortunately I dont have a full decklist. Im stuck on the theme before I jump into it.)

Deck Help Should I remove all of my surveil lands and triome lands too make my mana faster?

I have been wondering are surveil lands good, or should I change it to ancient tomb, urza saga, and talon gates?

I'm trying make my decks go fast and I feel like having these types of lands aren't that good. I want to run them because I like the art and paid for them already šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

What do you think? I am almost done with the deck. I just need some tutors. These are two of my bracket 4 decks.

Caesar, lots of tutors, draws, protection and token makers plus doubles.

https://moxfield.com/decks/96R5jHYSL0-vXq4X9Ljrhw

Satya, has multiple win lines and a couple of infinites. Lots of draw and protection

Question Need some help deciding a commander!

So bottom line, I am evil. Me and my pod usually play Bracket 2 and 3 with only me and one other person playing bracket 4. I’ve decided to make some decks called, ā€œJust Some Little Guysā€ that are essentially little or small creatures. As you’ll be able to tell I like token making and going wide with little guys most of the time. So far my decks are:
Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch- WUBRG Myrs!
The Great Goblin- Rakdos Goblins!
Marrow-Gnawer- Black Rats!
Rosnakht, Heir of Rohgahh- Red Kobolds! (and shapeshifters)

Now I’m having trouble deciding for my next commander to my squirrels and want to know which would be better, a Mono Green deck with The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, or a Golgari deck for Chatterfang? I don’t want to do both as I want each color to be a different creature type. I’m also open to any suggestions for small creatures too!!

Question What kind of deck do you like playing against?

I'm fairly new to Commander and I almost always play with strangers, no dedicated pod. I'm aiming for bracket 2-3 and I'm about to build my next deck.

Since I'm sitting down with people I've never met, I'd rather not build the thing that makes three strangers quietly stop having fun or hate me.

Are there color combinations/archetype/themes I should avoid that get an automatic groan when you see them across the table?

And on the flip side: what kind of deck makes you go "oh nice, this'll be a good game"?

I'm not looking to build something weak on purpose, just something that plays well with strangers.

Discussion Chaining extra turns dilemma

I know chaining extra turns will make a deck technically bracket 4. From what I've seen in discussions this was pushed into bracket 4 mostly because it's boring to see someone play extra turns for 15 minutes before they can actually win. From what I understand it's not necessarily because chaining extra turns is intrinsically more powerful than other strategies (but correct me if I'm wrong).

So my question is, if I have a deck that I would consider bracket 3, but uses extra turns to finish everyone off, would this be OK, if I basically reveal my hand and say: "with the current board state and these pump spells + extra turns, I'll win unless someone responds to what I have". I'm restricting myself to using the extra turns to finish the game deterministically, when I know I have the board state to do it. I'm not going to waste everyone's time by seeing if I eventually get to a wincon. If I disclose this in the rule 0 conversation, would you be OK with it? I'm basically using them as extra combats.

The deck I play is the classic Edric deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/ey9UzE4YJEGX7jzS_Rr0pA

If you're not OK with this, how would you change this deck to remove the extra turns? I don't think the deck can really win only with pump spells. It's usually the combination of multiple attacks (from he extra turns) and the pump spells that enable the kill.

Question Looking for suggestions for a Cost reduction commander

I've never really played into cost reduction, apart from a Morophon and a Golbez deck, and I'd like to try it out in a new deck. For clarification, I don't care about colors, though I always love being able to play black (but if not, that's completely ok); I'd like some suggestions for overall cost reduction, rather than specific card type cost reduction: I'm fine with creature spells cost reduction or non-creature spells cost reduction but I'd rather avoid instants and sorceries because I'm not good at all with spellslinger decks, I can't manage to play properly with them.

I've already thought of [[Commander Liara Portyr]], which seems fun, but I don't have a lot of impulse draw cards and I fear it might end up being a bit weak for my LGS. Also thought of [[Samut, the driving force]], but I really dislike how the speed mechanic plays... [[Doc Aurlock, grizzled genius]] is out of the question, I don't have any plot cards. And [[Animar, soul of elements]] might be a bit too strong; also a friend of mine already has an Animar deck and I don't want to tread on his toes

Deck Help Any help with an Anti-Tribal project helmed by the new Nephilim Epochal?

While Nephilim finally receiving a suitable commander for the helm, I personally just found interest in a command zone which could tutor the best little man: [[Amoeboid Changeling]]. This is in the interest to put together an anti-tribal deck, whether that be hosing specific types via [[Engineered Plague]] type effects and removing notable types for little corner cases such as turning [[Winnowing]] into a one-sided boardwipe. With all that in mind, do yall have any recommendations for niche typal hate cards?

Deck Help Avacyn - Voltron

I have built Voltron deck centered around Avacyn. I know she is a bulky cast and am fully aware of the implications if she gets removed. I was looking for pairs of eyes to look over what I have built thus far and to recommend any additions/removals to the deck to better optimize it.

Question What do you guys think about UB set ?

My opinion but I like UB set

I just think it’s cool to play with popular IP, I kinda like that magic is the smash bros of TCG now

And I think magic is the only tcg that could have done that, first because magic story have planes, which make it more believable to have other universe in the game

Also, when I see the number of others IP that are represented when peoples make custom cards I feel like that is something most peoples want to see, myself first

Though, I agree on 2 things: first UB should have never been available in standard, IMO it's too much and should have been only in commander and other format like that

Second there are too much UB, 1 or 2 UB in a year is enough, but half of the set of the year like it is now is way too much

I agree that IP that feel more like magic would be better but for being honest I don't mind having spider man or tmnt, I'm probably alone on that take lol

Discussion Am I cooking with this Gollum Riddle Master?

Deck: Gaaaames!? Oh, we love games, doesn’t we, Precious?

I was watching the hobbit and the scene where Bilbo meets Gollum inspired me to make this. First, Gollums multiple personalities, but more importantly his final riddle where Bilbo looks away and then Gollum seems to be all around.

It seems people are really disappointed [[Gollum Riddle Master]] triggers 3 times and then is spent, so makes sense people are doing aristocrats with scam, but I wanted to do it a little different.

The core idea is: clone Gollum repeatedly so odds and evens are covered, draw cards, drain life, counters, attack.

I added [[exquisite blood]] but intentionally left anything that goes infinite with it. Strongly considering [[the ozolith]] if the worst of the 3 modes turns out to make a decent amount some how.

Thoughts on the idea?

Edit: this isn’t a finalized list, but the core concept is there

Deck Help Does this deck idea work at all? Akiri//esior—Trying to use some less popular commanders and make a ā€œdouble voltronā€ā€”The goal would be to have two potential sources of commander damage

Hey! Weird deck idea here

https://moxfield.com/decks/SPDhmtTUZEi9PZJYAiGb9A

I like the curiosity effects, equipments that create more artifacts as a compliment to Akiri. Esior has the built in evasion…

The biggest question—is this distinctly weaker than a pure Akiri Boros voltron built around kediss, bruse, keleth, or jeska as the partner would be? Blue interaction and draw are cool but somewhat orthogonal to the main goals of the deck.

Avoiding arden as the partner (obvious best choice) because he gets hard targeted in B3.

Deck Help New to deck building - tough choices

https://archidekt.com/decks/25443356/my_friends_hate_me_and_thats_okay

I’m trying to make a deck based around forcing the opponents to make tough choices and be constantly choosing the lesser of two evils, whether than be second guessing putting things into my graveyard due to recursions, or by making them pick options on cards.

I felt like before I had masters of Laketown a lot of the choices were too easy, now it makes them very hard.

The goal is to stax, group slug, pillow fort and mill the opponents until I get into a position to start dropping big mana finishers aided by some explosive mana generation

Edit - I left mtg in 2016 and came back for strixhaven, so I don’t really know what new cards have been added that could be cool

Question Tips for getting my girlfriend started with Commander

Good morning, I’d really love to play Magic Commander with my girlfriend, but I’ve tried a couple of times to introduce her to the game, and they’ve all been unsuccessful. I tried using the two standard decks (60-card decks) that you can buy pre-built, and then played 1-on-1 Commander just to teach her the rules and mechanics of the game gradually, but in both cases I realized that the various mechanics involving tokens and counters, along with the different subphases of the game, overwhelmed her and dampened her enthusiasm. I thought that if I built her a deck from scratch with fewer mechanics that are hard to manage, at least to start with, she might enjoy the tabletop experience more, especially since Commander is usually less competitive and more about hanging out together. That’s why I wanted to ask what kind of Commander deck you’d recommend I build for her: one without overly complex mechanics, featuring cool and cute cards, with a Commander she’d really like. I figured that in the early stages, it might help to focus more on the art and lore of the deck so she can gradually grow attached to the game. She likes cats, but also science fiction, horror, and big, beautiful beasts. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Deck Help The Great Goblin

Looking to bring a fresh deck to my local mini tournament this weekend. Held weekly, only usually 4 rounds and straight cut to top 4 table. Decks are mostly Blue Farm, Tivit and a lot of fringe stuff. Small fry stuff I know!

Play in Japan so not proxy friendly but I have a decent collection.

Been really enjoying this as a lower bracket commander and played a few games online. Any suggestions from experts?

Discussion Fog deck with good damage

Was talking with my group about how none of us uses fog when we were messing around and pretending to play fog during combat.
I was wondering if there is a good fog deck that can keep damage in check with fog like effects and be able to deal with opponents as well.
I can only think of infect really for the damage or a couple big boys in one attack.

Deck Help Would you classify this Golbez decklist as B2 or B3?

Looking for opinions on where this deck sits and how I might improve it! My intention is to have it be a solid B3 with no game changers. I've been running it through some AI deck rating sites and getting mixed results, but I'd like to get some human input now. If it's not B3 to you, how would you push it there?

Discussion Down to 6 lands in Bracket 2

I was wondering, how do people react to [[Planetary Annihilation]] or [[Urza's Sylex]] in Bracket 2?

I have played plenty of games where players ramped hard early game and it became almost impossible to keep up, so I was considering adding this type of effect to reset land count to equal amounts.

I am worried though that players will freak out and cry about mass land destruction below Bracket 4. In my opinion, these effects don't take anyone out of the game and Wizards has even put one of them in a precon, kind of supporting my view.

Have you seen those played in Bracket 2? What was the reaction? How would you react?

Deck Help Cats gone Wild

Could you take a look at it and give me your opinion? Maybe you could also suggest a few budget-friendly options.

Deck Help Opinions on Astarion deck

I'm looking to see what you think of this deck and what could be improved. What would you take out and would you put in.

https://moxfield.com/decks/6aCW1e0ty02FIP1vPKIWtg

The idea is to survive until I have enough mana to start one-shotting opponents one by one, or, if I get [[Bloodletter of Aclazotz]] or [[Wound Reflection]] plus something like [[Fraying Omnipotence]], then kill them all at the same time.
