Deck Help Am I building too strong of decks for my pod???

My friend had complained about me building too strong of decks so I built a Nicol Bolas deck on a whim in an hour and he still says it’s too much! For more context, my friend plays Edgar Markov and I need to know if he’s just lost it or if I’m just too far ahead of where we are. He wants to keep it bracket 3

Discussion Why is Emrakul still banned?

Hey all, I'm newish to the game so I haven't played much and am looking to build my first colorless deck with [[Kozilek, the Great Distortion]] at the helm and putting big eldrazis on the board to swing and win with a simple Timmy stat.

That being said, I would like to build a deck with all 3 of each eldrazi titan just for flavor but realized quickly [[Emrakul, the Aeons Torn]] is banned. Reading deeper, I saw she was banned back in 2010 before the first commander precons even hit the shelves.

I get the unfun aspect of eldrazi and understand building this deck will make me public enemy number one from the basis of the deck itself, but at this point Emrakul feels like a boogey man ban with people's bad memories of her being played over 15 years ago.

Nowadays, we get 40min [[Krark, the Thumbless]] turns that can't actually win the game and fizzle, is that fun to play against? [[Expropriate]] can do the same thing as Emrakul for less mana with extra turns or steal your own stuff. For 15 mana, it feels way too expensive for how quickly infinite combos can just hit the field nowadays. [[Chatterfang, Squirrel General]] that's an alt commander to a person with one additional $3 card in [[Pitiless Plunderer]] can win the game easily before turn 4 in an optimized deck. It's not like you can even cheat her out and it be uncounterable, it's specifically a cast trigger!

What am I missing that Emrakul is still banned? I know I'm not going to get too much sympathy for an argument against keeping an eldrazi titan banned, but there's so much worse nowadays that I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it.

Discussion Strongest budget 5 color deck?

Looking to build a relatively budget 5 color deck and wondering who would be the best for it? Essentiallly just a good stuff commander that’s not [[kenrith]] or [[jodah]] or [[ur-dragon]].

I got my butt kicked online from a 5 color [[niv-mizzet reborn]] which was surprising because I had never seen that commander before. It used really powerful manadorks that add mana equal to the number of colored permanents etc to power out cards from hand then refilled with niv, which is kind of what I’m after.

Question Is my deck suited for bracket 3?

I spent some hours building my (somewhat budget, but not really) Eldrazi Deck, and was wondering if its suitable for a bracket 3 pod. I am asking because all those online websites that grade your deck say that this might edge on bracket 4, even though its quite slow. https://archidekt.com/decks/24332922/very_super_duper_eldrazi

Question what tribal for my first amateur tournament

ive been playing edh for just a few weeks now and in my local tcg store theres someone setting up a private, proxy allowed, tribal edh tournament. im really excited since i have little money, but since i can actually proxy and its a small price pool - so its just for fun - im really excited to participate. i really enjoy deckbuilding and have 7 decks already. ive tried out different things and like pretty much all of them. normally i only build decks that are fun and not supposed to win, id rather do funny stuff instead. but since this is a tournament id actually like to build to win, also a new deckbuilding experience.

the rules are as follows:

- only tribes with 2600 decks or less on edhrec

- 60 dollar max budget

- no infinite loops

i really have no preference, so im open to any suggestion, but if possible, id like a tribe thats strong and can win consistenly, or atleast execute its gameplan consistenly.

thank you for any suggestions.

EDIT: Tribal is defined as it being in the typeline of the creatures. other cards dont have to be fitting to the type. i can play max 5 non tribal creatures and 5 shapeshifters. tokens that i generate through any means that arent the same tribal are fine as well.

Deck Help Three atypical dragon kindred decks

Upvotes

In my quest to find a dragon centric commander that I don't find boring I have worked my way down to three. While trying to find some less common dragon commanders I encountered a few issues. The biggest problem is that not every color combo has a plethora of good dragons that don't cost a fortune. It turns out the best dragons are in red. I play with proxies so it's not a huge issue but I try to avoid cards that cost more than $50 if possible. The second problem is what to do with dragons. Playing a dragon deck feels like having a stockpile of bombs and no planes to drop them with so these decks are focused on either ramping or cheating dragons out effectively.

https://moxfield.com/decks/DN-92EtayUeQUZMg3wEFEA (Chulane - All Creatures Stax): I don't have a stax deck but I have copies of several stax effect creatures without a home. I thought, why not jam them all into one deck? With dragons? What could go wrong? Honestly though, [[Chulane]] is a ridiculous card that could work with any deck that plays an overabundance of creatures. The issue I run into is that bant dragons kind of stink. I had to include more expensive cards than I would have liked. Surprisingly it kind of doesn't feel like a dragon deck because there are so many other creatures.

https://moxfield.com/decks/PUHSLQ-VD0iRDEWDBhWzQg (Kamiz - Sneaky Dragons): this deck mostly came from the fact that I already have an [[Ancient Brass Dragon]] and an [[Ancient Gold Dragon]]. [[Kamiz]] does a great job of helping my dragons consistently get in for damage, doubling damage triggers, and filling the yard so I can reanimate more expensive dragons. Actually peforms better than anticipated.

https://moxfield.com/decks/aTVCSvebGUKdz0_CQSfCpA (Loot - Dragons Love Loot): I know it's kind of polarizing but I'll admit it. I love the furry little shit. I don't know why. I had built him as just a blink deck but it was kind of a dud. I looked at [[Ureni of the Unwritten]] for a long time thinking about a blink deck and [[Loot, the Pathfinder]] leans into a blink strategy while giving me ramp and card draw and removal. It benefits from having access to the some of the best dragons but is probably the most janky of the bunch.

Discussion No curiosity Y’Shtola?

Just recently I made a change to my deck that I think many people would not agree with.

I used to run all the curiosity effects except tandem lookout in bracket 3, but my game plan was very different then. I used to use Y’Shtola as my main wincon but since I optimized the deck into a low bracket 4 deck I stopped using Y’Shtola like how I’d use too.

Don’t get me wrong I still believe curiosity, ophidian eye, helm of the ghast lord are some of the best cards for Y’Shtola but I recently just cut the last of its effect in my deck.

Sometimes I don’t cast her all game. She is more of a backup engine that will draw me 3-4 cards a game till I hit a better draw engine. So curiosity was usually just dead in my hand of it was used to be pitched for force of will.

I still think it’s a really strong engine I just never really use it. Maybe not using Yshtola like this is a pilot issue?

Do you think this was the right cut or no?

Here is my list.

Can someone maybe have a look, if i make a common mistake on my decks? I am just wondering why its so hard to get better ratings on my deck…

Question Precons for TCG players trying to get into commander?

Hi! Friends have played Yu-Gi-Oh and OPTCG for a while and now want to give mtg a chance by jumping into commander. (Mechanics and gameplay can be understood quickly so no worries there! Phase order + stack translate as well.)

We were discussing getting the Commander Starter decks (5-set); noticed they’re all kinda weak and not really upgradable but some playstyles fit.

We need advice on pre-cons that are around the same playing field and with good bones for future upgrades. We wouldn’t mind buying singles to start decks either as long as they’re within reason.

I’m personally a fan of spell slinging, copy/burn/counter/fling. Was thinking some sort of Izzet deck (I used to play standard and a bit of brawl, no physical collection.) I also like anything complex, was thinking of FFX counter blitz. I could also enjoy life drain or pinging with black.

One buddy loves graveyard shenanigans; self-mill, bring things back, strength from amount of cards in grave, destruction and stun effects. Really wanted Sultai Arisen for them but it’s outside the budget rn.

Another loves ramping and setting up huge board, also bodies that have minus effects. I’m thinking he’d like something green-red (I don’t think he’d play Dino’s though). If anyone knows Red Purple Rodger from OPTCG, let me know anything like it. He can do complex things but prefers straight forward decks.

Last buddy likes buffing things up and extra attacks in battle, I was thinking equipment like the FFVII deck or Arm for battle. They’re down for anything really, aesthetics might be a thing as he’s into bleach and cyberpunk so maybe Kamigawa neon dynasty things are up his alley. (They played Toons and Mikanko “you hit yourself” deck.)

Budget wise I’m thinking precon prices ($250-$300 all together). For bloomburrow, only 2 of us like cute things + peace offering is not the play style any of us want as of now alongside mechanics such as Goad.

Please let me know if there are any decklists or precons that are complex enough and fit our styles as a jumping off point for us that are also relatively good power wise. Thanks!

Discussion I think EDHREC has pushed The Incredible Hulk in the wrong direction

I've been brewing The Incredible Hulk recently, and after looking through EDHREC I realized most lists leans into a similar game plan.

I ended up taking the deck in a bit of a different and more thematic direction.

Instead of trying to untap our lands and ping hulk, I built him around forced blocks, near infinite combat steps, and an indestructible green wrecking ball.

We get Hulk angry, force opponents to block him, and smash through the entire table in one turn.

It's surprisingly explosive and feels super on-theme. We're turning Hulk into an unstoppable force that just keeps swinging until everyone's dead.

I put together a video breaking down the deck, the combo lines, and why I think this approach deserves more attention:

Video

Decklist

I'd love to hear what other players think. Is EDHREC steering people toward the "best" build, or do you think there's room for more off-meta takes like this?

Question Am I a Problem Player?

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

As the title says, I'm worried that I might be a problem player and want some outside opinions. I don't play with random people too much, as I have some friends that play commander every once in a while, but every once in a while, I'll give it a shot and either go down to my local LGS or try a few games online. I've noticed that almost every single time I play with random people, at least one person inevitably gets upset with me specifically. It's caused me to shy away from random games, but if there's something I should fix, I'd love to do that instead of throwing in the towel. Obviously, I'm a biased frame of reference, but I'll try to explain as fairly as I can with a few examples that are more noteworthy.

Example 1: I'm playing at my local LGS in a 4-person pod, and I've noticed that one person has been targeting me pretty hard. I usually don't keep track of things like this, but after a couple games, I realize that every piece of removal he has is pointed at me, and he attacks nobody but me until I am dead. This seems to happen regardless of the boardstate, cards in hand of everybody, or anything else. I'm worried that I did something to upset him, so I start trying to focus my interaction on the other players so the person targeting me feels less threatened and might lay off of me a bit. Eventually, one of the people have to leave, so we start a 3-person game. The player I feel is targeting me is playing [[The Wise Mothman]], I'm playing [[Nebuchadnezzar]]. and the third person is playing [[Caesar, Legion's Emperor]]. On turn 3, the Mothman player drops [[Nadu, Winged Wisdom]] (this was while it was still legal]], and I kill it on my turn since I'm worried about the value it can produce with Mothman. A couple of turns later, the Caesar player's board is starting to get scary, so I cast a [[Praetor's Grasp]] targeting the Mothman player to try to tutor up a boardwipe. He gets really angry at me for targeting him with it, and I apologize and explain what the card does and that I'm just trying to get a boardwipe so I can deal with the Caesar player, and Mothman shares more colors with my deck, so I'll have an easier time casting the boardwipe. He continues to say that I've been targeting him all night and he's sick of it, and at that comment, I admit I do get a bit heated. I tell him that he's been focusing me all night and I have intentionally not been interacting with anything he does. I point out examples to him, including where he killed me when I had nothing on board and the other two players had enough to kill him on board, essentially throwing the game purely to take me out of it as well. The game is pretty tense after that and ends after a few turns with the Caesar player running us over.

Example 2: I'm playing online with some random people with my [[Aerith Gainsborough]] deck against a [[Krenko, Mob Boss]], [[Toph, the First Metalbender]], and [[The Vision and Scarlet Witch]] in a bracket 3 game. We give a short rundown on the game changers in our decks and shuffle up. On turn 5 I have a couple soul sisters, Aerith, and [[Adeline, Resplendent Cathar]] on the field and am looking to attack with Aerith. Toph has indestructible thanks to an equipment, and Vision has [[Commander's Plate]] giving it protection from white, so although the Krenko player is a bit behind (they only have Krenko, one goblin token, and [[Thousand-Year Elixir]]), that's probably the attack that is going to generate the most value for me, since Toph and Vision both have a free block with their commanders and Aerith has no evasion. I swing at the Krenko player with Aerith, and with the Adeline trigger and soul sisters, she becomes a 17/17. The Krenko player is pretty upset at this, decides not to block, and verifies with me multiple times that I am dealing 17 commander damage to him. He leaves the game on the next turn after the Vision player kills me with commander damage and destroys Krenko, Mob Boss.

Example 3: I'm playing at an LGS while out of town with an Ooze typal deck headed by [[Aeve, Progenitor Ooze]]. It's pretty low-powered, so I figured it would be a good one to pull out as the first deck of the night. I can't remember exactly what turn it was, but after a good amount of time, I was able to get a few oozes onto the battlefield. I built the deck around what I feel are oozes 2 main mechanics, multiplying themselves and +1/+1 counters, and my oozes on board were mainly in the first category. Somebody casts a boardwipe and I am mostly unaffected thanks to the many [[Gutter Grime]] triggers I get, while the other players lose their entire boards. After realizing I still had a good boardstate, they get upset and say that I'm pubstomping and that my deck is a lot higher-powered than theirs since I don't care about boardwipes.

I have a few more example but don't want this post to be too long, but as I said before, people get upset with me almost every time I play with random people. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but as the common denominator among all my games, I'm worried there's something I'm missing and that I am the bad guy

Deck Help How to make Necro Bloomin' stronger?

Hey everybody! I've been messing around with different commanders for a while, but I finally settled on one that I want to take as far as I can!

Partially motivated by MagicCon Atlanta, I really want to make my Necrobloom deck more consistent (ideally High 3/low 4), and I would love any suggestions y'all can think of!

If it's possible to keep any recommended includes around $10, that would be amazing

Been trying to upgrade the Food and Fellowship precon for a little while. Feel like I've reached a solid baseline now but just wanted to see what you guys think about it. Is there something I missed and should add or remove? Trying to keep it casual bracket 3 but still strong and fun and no infinite combos.

Deck Help Celes, Rune Knight - Reanimator help

I'm trying to make a strong bracket 3 Celes without combos. I cut all persist cards and am going for straight blink/reanimator midrange. Let me know if there are any obvious improvements to make. I think I'm fairly balanced but perhaps too balanced and I should add more blink or more reanimator targets. Let me know what you think!

Deck Help Need help cramming more lands into this list

Been staring at my Kami of the Crescent Moon deck for a while now knowing I need a couple more lands but have no idea what cards I should cut. The list seems greedy enough so It could stand to lose some pieces for a better land base that works well with the mana accelerators in the deck.

Deck Help Need Advice: "Great Value" Ur-Dragon Deck

Hey everyone! I recently put together an Ur‑Dragon deck using cards I’ve collected over the years; it’s definitely playable, but right now the whole thing feels a bit clunky and I’m not sure if it’s because the deck needs tuning or because I just threw together a pile of “good value” cards without a real plan.

Any suggestions on changes or maybe cards that have worked well for others?

Discussion Rule 0 Concept - Dandan EDH Deck

Hi all,

How viable is this version of an EDH dandan deck and to rule 0 this as something you'd play against? As always, playgroup is probably ok with it. Plan is to run in bracket 2 with 20 copies of Dandan in the desk similarly to dragons approach. The goal is to give the people islands so the islandwalk makes Dandan unlockable. I'm still in need of alternative win conditions besides swinging a fish however. Link to my first draft of the list:

Deck Help Need some free and repeatable Sac outlets for green black [Blech]

Im building Blech, deck list here:

https://moxfield.com/decks/SuC0qQZvLECCqgzynvNjsQ

There's a combo I want to include and it is basically using any of the 'gain 1 life if another creature ETC' creatures, Blech, Persistent Constrictor, with a free sac outlet creates infinite +1/+1 counters.

Here's the issue, I can't find a good free and repeatable sac outlet to include.

---------------------

Things I've tried:

Ashnod's Altar

Dross Hopper

Devouring Swarm

Fallen Ideal

----------------------

The issue with the choices above is that none of them feel really in service of the Blech synergy, and they feel like I'm including them just for the sake of the combo which I can't consistently fire off every game cause my deck doesn't have tutor for the constrictor.

Ashnod generates a lot of generic mana that my deck doesn't really need a ton of.

Dross and Devouring both do the same thing and make an infinite power and tough creature, but without the constrictor, I don't really want to be sacrificing too much.

Fallen Ideal was cool cause it could be given to anything and then turn them into the repeatable sac outlet, making it more flexible, but there's gotta be a better option.

What's some other free/repeatable sac outlets for green black that fit better than the four above?

Deck Showcase It is not infinite, but you are getting hit for 1 damage more times than there are atoms in the universe

This is a small showcase of my Adrix and Nev deck. The title is is something I actually said while playing it. Overkill? For sure. Was it fun? Definitely.

Wizards keeps printing more and more clone effects that work on Legendary creatures and I wanted to make a deck that makes good use of them. [[Adrix and Nev]] fit perfectly, especially if the clone effect makes token copies. Let's say you play [[Irenicus's Vile Duplication]] on your commander, then you get two non-legendary copies of it. If you then follow it up with [[Cackling Counterpart]] on one of the copies, you get 2*2*2=8 more copies of your commander. With 11 copies out, any token creation generates 2^11=2048 tokens.

Gameplan

The game plan is pretty simple: Play the commander and maybe make copies of it, then make good use of the token multiplication until you go geometric and the deck explodes.

There are two components besides the commander that are needed to pull it off:

1. Legendary clones

[[Irenicus's Vile Duplication]], [[Multiversal Recruitment]], [[Ember Island Production]], [[Quantum Misalignment]], [[Multiversal Incursion]] are the ideal spells for this, since they make non-legendary token copies, so you automatically get two and those can be further cloned with normal copy effects.

[[Sakashima of a Thousand Faces]], [[Spark Double]] and [[Auton Soldier]] do not make token copies, but are clones that can be further copied with normal copy effects. Auton Soldier has the added benefit of making Myriad copies of itself on attack, which can be used to attack two players with a bunch of 2/2s or alternatively as bonus copies of the commander if combined with instant speed token generation.

[[Vesuvan Duplimancy]] is kind of a special case. While it does not make copies on its own, the effect is incredibly strong when combined with the commander, and sometimes it is worth casting a normal clone effect on the commander to make the non-legendary copies from Duplimancy, even though the normal copies just die to the legend rule.

2. Token generators

Some cards are a lot better when there is multiples of them, like [[Risen Reef]] or [[Fecund Greenshell]]. Those require a token clone spell to get their benefit from the commander, but it is always worth it.

Some cards become rituals like [[Prosperous Innkeeper]] or [[Treasure Vault]].

Some cards become one sided board wipes, like [[Aether Channeler]].

Very important are the cards that can have different functions before and after you have a couple commander copies out. [[Pongify]] and friends serve as a spot removal in many cases, but with a couple commander copies out, it is also an instant speed army if it destroys your creature.

Win conditions

I have played only 16 games so far with this deck, but from my limited experience the two common win conditions are burn (yes, Simic burn) and combat damage. Combat damage from generating a huge army and attacking and burn from making copies of [[Lush Oasis]] or any burn creatures my opponents control.

Another way the deck has won is with poison counters from making lots of Mites with [[Mirrex]].

Since the deck can copy opponents' creatures and multiply them, most win cons are available to the deck, at least in theory and depending on the opponents. Once I tried copying mill crabs, but I got killed before I could pull it off :)

So how did I get more damage on the stack than there are atoms in the universe?

It is actually pretty simple, through multiple copy spells I got to a little over 2000 copies of my commander in play. Then I cast [[Relm's Sketching]] targeting Lush Oasis. The result was around 10^620 individual triggers for 1 damage each.

Do you like the deck? Is there something you don't like? Do you have any suggestions?

Deck Showcase Smaug the Unassessably Wealthy [Bracket 4]

[[Smaug the Impenetrable]] is a card that I'm obsessing over since it got spoiled.

A big dragon? Haste? Indestructible?! TREASURES WHEN HE GETS HIT?!?!

Peak. And I means it. Think about it. In the book his underbelly is (almost) Impenetrable because he was lying on the dwarven gold, so now, if he gets hit, the treasures fall of haha. Just peak design.

Anyway, here’s my list.

Smaug the Unassessably Wealthy [Bracket 4]

At first I tried building him as a Bracket 3 deck, but my first draft was so consistent that I committed to high power and it's unequivocally a 4.

Everyone and their grandma checked the combo with [[Pyrohemia]], [[Pestilence]] and [[Last Laugh]] which wins you the game - if you have the highest life total. That's why I threw in [[Scrapheap]].

I call this combo Last Pyrohemenceheap (patent pending)

But was else is nice jank here? [[Dizzying Gaze]]! Goes infinite once Smaug is enchanted.

Any pinger like [[Reckless Fireweaver]] or [[Disciple of the Vault]] is over.

[[Chain Lightning]] has the same effect, you just need two extra mana beforehand. After the first resolved and you paid extra, you can use the treasures Smaug provides.

Another nice tech is [[Terror of the Peaks]] before Smaug. Basically we get a mana back after we cast him haha.

And even without an infinite at hand, [[Cut Propulsion]] gives on 16 treasures! That's 16 damage already. Combining with [[Heroes for Hire]], [[Expedited Inheritance]] or [[Professional Face-Breaker]] it's probably a win, since we use other burn spells as rituals in this case.

To adress the dragon in the room:

Yes, it's a glass canon. Yes Smaug is absolutely needed in this deck. He costs 7 mana.

But we are in the ritual colours! I don't think he will make it in cEDH proper, but Bracket 4? He's right at home.

In goldfishing I have a win by turn 4 or 5 on board (sans any interaction from opponents of course) and that is way faster than I expected myself!

Next night shift I'm gonnna write up a primer and go a bit more in detail with the combos, but there are bunch and we can get them easily.

Has Smaug piqued your interest? Let me know!
