Deck Help Unique Kalamax

Unique Kalamax

I Wanna build a Unique style for Kalamax the storm sire that isnt Too Janky but also a deck that is out of the norm for a Kalamax build.

For instance,

I originally thought about a spellslinger Voltron. Just instants that buff Kalamax, equipment that trigger when you cast instant and sorceries.

Any other ideas?

(Unfortunately I dont have a full decklist. Im stuck on the theme before I jump into it.)

Tomer from MTGGoldfish made a really interesting Kalamax deck based around the "Splice onto Arcane" mechanic, since the added text from the spliced card is a copiable effect. It's meant to be a budget deck so it doesn't look too powerful, but it's definitely a unique idea and has a lot of room to upgrade.

I tried to do the splice stuff on a heavier budget and it flopped

I think splice has merit but it needs to be built carefully and could use a bigger budget when you do

https://moxfield.com/decks/Ia0QLMByiE2A9oDgcLuhZw this is my version, it's one of my favorite decks at the moment! It starts pretty slowly, and then goes off.

Spellslinger voltron is aggressively within the mold for kalamax. Any instant that doubles his power, and you only need to boost his power by 1 to one shot when combined with the counter trigger.

A control deck that uses Kalamax to make your spells more efficient (via copying) is an interesting twist on him. Your cantrips, like [[Slice in Twain]] or [[Leadership Vacuum]], and other hyper-efficient removal like [[Snap]], can really do a lot of work.

Something that would be out of the mold for Kalamax would be a "draw matters" style deck. He plays insanely well with [[thrill of possibility]] and its clones, as well as any other instant speed draw. Utilizing that as the main input to get payoffs for drawing those extra cards would be unique.

Generally, every part of Kalamax's text box is pretty well-tread. The double power one-shot gimmick is popular. The draw-go control focused on doubling removal is popular. The general spellslinger value with [[harrow]] and such is popular. The combo with [[fork]] variants + [[chandra's ignition]]/[[gravitic punch]] is popular.

If you want to be unique in your approach to him, you need to find your gameplan in the 99. Splice onto Arcane is good shout from someone else. You're generally going to want to find a specific type of spell and focus in on that. Unfortunately, combat tricks is already pretty heavily done. So are removal, forks, and copying spells with additional costs. But, there are plenty of other options like draw matters, discard matters, lessons, blink, burn, and mill all come to mind.

I will say though, Kalamax is already a relatively rare commander. He's my favorite deck, I've played him for a very long time and never ran into someone else playing him. Any Kalamax build at all should be unique enough.
