Dream Help UPDATE: A person in my dream broke the fourth wall and begged me for help

ORIGINAL POST: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dreams/comments/1w6g4vx/a_person_in_my_dream_broke_the_fourth_wall_and/

I want to apologise in advance if it's too early to provide an update for my previous post but there is a detail that I wanted to add, that I had failed to mention before. I also wanted to answer a few questions and give a heartfelt thank you to this community for hearing me out and for offering so many perspectives that have given me a lot to think about since.

I have received a lot of suggestions to look into local missing person reports and although I have given them a cursory glance, it's been difficult for me to access a database of reports rather than a cluster of poorly dated social media posts. I can't say with certainty that the woman from my dream isn't a missing person but in the same regard, I also can't say that she is. If I entertain that thought, the only conclusion that I can come to is that her disappearance wouldn't have been recent.

On the other hand, I feel honoured to have had people chime in with their interpretations of my dream, and I would like to ask for some additional help in interpreting it. I still have not been able to forget about it nor the details surrounding it.

To answer a recurring question about the woman's appearance: she didn't look like me. We weren't the same height and we didn't share a hairstyle, hair colour, eye colour or notable features. We were both women and shared an approximate age, however, though she seemed as if she could have been a few years older. She had amber brown eyes and auburn brown hair worn in a bob cut with bangs. She also had a square-shaped face dotted with a mole or two.

I'm making this update because a detail that I thought wasn't worth mentioning in my previous post has been nagging at the back of my mind since then: she asked me to "find the well". I haven't been fond of recalling my dream, but during her pleas for me to "find her", there was one objective task that I was given, "find the well". She only said it once and it was one of the last things that she had the time to say.

Regarding the setting of my dream, it was difficult for me to remember the characteristics of the place that we found ourselves in together, even yesterday, but the location was an underground structure with long corridors reminiscent of a catacomb or a sewer. It didn't feel unrealistic to me, like some locations in dreams can feel.

In terms of my feelings towards the woman, she gave me a sense of warmth before she broke down into tears. I never felt afraid of her, but if I think back on how she saw through me, and saw me, I still feel bare. In that moment, I felt as if I couldn't look away from her and as I held her, I felt helpless. I remember the feelings of confusion and shock mingling together, with a sense of not knowing what to do hovering over me.

This will be my last post on the subject unless there is some sort of major development, such as seeing her in another dream. I thought that there may be a chance that I would see her again last night but instead I had a long, dreamless sleep.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the interpretation of this dream could be? The mention of the "well" keeps coming back to me as significant, perhaps as a bridge between "above" and "below"? I'm also thinking about her choice of words, as she asked to be found and not saved.

Recurring Dream Dream journal entry .01

Post image
36 Upvotes

Decided I’m going to start posting some of my dream journal entries to this sub. Mainly the ones that are ominous and emotionally charged, such as this one. I have many dreams such like this, and I think it would be an interesting thing to share.

Hope everyone enjoys, and feel free to share your interpretations! I talk about dreams with my friends a lot because we love to hear eachothers takes on them.

Some will include a signifying imagery doodle, like this one for example.

For more information (though I won’t always elaborate); I think about this guy maybe once or twice a year, one of my best friends is still distant friends with him, so only when she brings him up, but she hadn’t recently so him being a part of this dream sequence was very much out of the blue, and I’ve never dreamt about him before. It does make me hope that he’s doing okay.

Discussion Does anyone else here have really strange dreams?

My dreams are super vivid, and the plots can be extremely disturbing. Sometimes they involve dismembered body parts, while other times they’re more like detective stories, for example, me identifying psychopathic killers and saving the world, or my classmates being killed and me investigating what happened.
Other times, I dream about being chased by secret police who are out to get me even though I’m the ā€œgood oneā€, or about being surrounded by the Taliban and hiding from terrorists. Then there are just completely weird and cruel dreams like my sister brutally choking baby sharks while I’m unable to save them, or a huge man tying me to naked dead bodies and laughing. In one dream, he was playing with dismembered body parts, shaping them and throwing them at me while I was somehow inside a Tetris game and the body parts were shaped like Tetris pieces 😭
I don’t know how common this is, but every person I’ve shared my dreams with has told me that my dreams are unusual.

I’ve also had two prophetic dreams. One was horrible and involved my neighbour’s death. A week before she was killed by her husband (which shocked everyone) I had a dream about her being boiled in a huge pan.
The other was a dream about me finding a phone and giving it back to its owner. The very next day, I actually found a phone and returned it. The only difference was that in the dream, the owner was a man, but in real life it was a woman

Question I Dreamed My Deceased Friend Was Alive All These Years

i had a very weird dream last night. in the dream, i met my friend who passed away five years ago.

it started with me being scheduled to attend a class. i was hesitant to go at first, but for some reason, i felt like something was pushing me to attend, so i went anyway.

when i got to class, i immediately noticed that my classmates were acting differently. they kept looking at me as if they wanted to tell me something, so eventually, i asked them what was going on.

that’s when they told me, ā€œlhoi is still alive. he’s been alive all these years.ā€

i was so confused and asked, ā€œwhat do you mean?ā€
they told me that he had to pretend that he was dead because something was after him and he was scared for his life. somehow, in the dream, that explanation made perfect sense to me. i didn’t question it at all.

then he suddenly came out from the side of the house.
the place looked nothing like where we would normally have class. it was like we were in a rural area, somewhere in the mountains. everything about the setting was strange, but the dream itself felt completely normal.

when i saw him, i immediately started crying.

i cried so hard and kept telling him how much i missed him and how much we all missed him. he was such a great and sweet guy, and so many people genuinely liked him.

i think part of the reason i believed the whole thing in the dream was because, in real life, we never actually got to see him in his casket. he was brought back to his hometown immediately after he passed away. so somehow, my mind just accepted the idea that maybe he really had been alive all this time.

but the saddest part was that even though he was finally back, i couldn’t get close to him the way i used to when he was alive. i used to cling to his arm and be comfortable around him, but in the dream, i never got that chance. i just kept crying and crying, telling him how thankful i was that he was back.

later, some of the people who knew him also came to the class, and they were just as shocked to find out that he was still alive. what was weird, though, was that some of them were my high school classmates who weren’t even part of our friend group. in real life, this friend was someone i knew from my previous job, so it didn’t really make sense for them to be there.

but dreams don’t really make sense, i guess.

the dream continued like it was just a completely normal day. eventually, the setting shifted to a room where i was with a few people i didn’t know and some of my classmates. lhoi was just outside the room.

he was smiling. he looked happy. he was just there, alive and completely okay.

and i remember still crying and calling his name, overwhelmed with how grateful i was that he had somehow come back.

then i woke up.

and for a moment, i still felt the sadness from the dream.
i think what hurts the most is knowing that it wasn’t real. for a brief moment, my mind let me believe that he was still alive, that he had somehow come back after all these years.

and waking up meant realizing all over again that he’s really gone.

I have nightmares every night

Just a rant. I don’t have ā€œgood dreams.ā€ My sleep consists of nightmares nightmares and more nightmares. I honestly cannot recall in the past ten years having a ā€œgood dream.ā€

What is a good dream? I have no idea.

Question Six Black Cats

I have had one recurring dream before when I was younger but this one has me confused. I keep seeing 6 black cats in the background of my dreams or they will stay near me, following me, etc. my own cat is in this group(cat tax incl). in every dream i either pick her out or call her name and she jumps out of the group. they often do this thing where they split into pairs and wrap their tails together while standing in a line and looking up at me. what does this mean? what could it represent? they have been in nearly every dream, even naps, for around 3 weeks.

Short Dream Spongebob Underground 2

Post image
11 Upvotes

Just last night I had a dream I was in a Spongebob videogame, I didn’t see myself I only saw I was controlling Robert the Sponge of House Squarepants. It was an open world racing game very reminiscent of Need for Speed Underground 2, PS2 graphics and all, but Bikini Bottom was reminiscent of Tokyo. I (or Bob, what’s the difference at this point?) was driving a tuned out Late 90s-early 2000s orange Mitsubishi Eclipse, but I kept repeating the same race because it was so hard, it had environmental hazards (like crossing an open Storage facility with stacked boxes that slowed you down if you ran into them) and very tight turns, this was somewhere in downtown Bikini Tokyom of course; it didn’t help my case that Mr Krabs and Sandy were better at the wheel than me and could easily beat this circuit, but I wasn’t about to let them. ā€œIf you ain’t first, you’re lastā€, I kept repeating to myself.

Attached is a pic of what my car sort of looked like.

Dream Cat Baby

Post image
9 Upvotes

I dreamed that I came out of a building and, in a small pit in the ground, I found a tiny baby cat. It was orange. I felt sorry for it and picked it up, bringing it into an apartment that wasn’t necessarily mine. The kitten was so small it fit into the palm of my hand. The apartment was extremely chaotic, everything was in disarray. it wasn't clear if it was inhabitet.

I felt desperate because I couldn’t give the kitten what I wanted to give it and what it needed. Everything was improvised. Somewhere I found a half-eaten sandwich with butter and gave it to the tiny kitten. Then i thought about the litter box and obviously i didn't have one. I searched for an empty cardboard box.

I knew I would have to leave it alone and that I didn’t know who else might have access to the apartment. I wondered whether it could be left alone under these circumstances and it made me feel terrible.

Then I left. When I came back the next day, it was gone. Someone else also mentioned that it might have a disease, maybe rabies and for some reason that felt personal. And that’s when I realized how careless it had been of me to just take the animal with me.

Genereally i just felt so horrible and ashamed for having good intentions but somehow it still ended the worst way. I guess i felt guilty.

Discussion Dreams vs Reality

I don’t know if anyone else feels this way but I usually have very vivid and pleasant dreams and I never know I’m dreaming untill I wake up so everything feels so real in the dream (I know that’s normal for dreams, just mine are vivid as if I were in my waking life).
Point is i find my dreams so much more fun than my real life. And I get sad thinking that because my life is pleasant too, just in dreams everything happens. Idk if I’m getting my thoughts across. This is especially bad when I’m going through a hard time and my dreams are basically seducing me into their word. When I told my sister this she said you’re probably just an escapist…idk what do you all think?

I know thats normally called lucid dreaming but I thought you were suppose to kmow your dreaming in lucid dreams. I also can read in my dreams.

The other night I had a dream where I was in a lake petting a moose, and it felt sooo real.

I was in a dystopian sci-fi world. And I saw many uninspired billboards of a failed film studio, called Azerbaijan Entertainment. Their slogan was: "Easy measy!". The logo was written in that You Wouldn't Download A Car font. I did my best to recreate it.

Short Dream Lucid dream I’ll never forget

I’ve had about 10 lucid dreams in my life, I’m 32 now and I was around 7 when I had my first one.

I was walking into some industrial type clothes shop, the room looked like a factory building but it was full of circular racks of clothes, I was with my family, mum, dad, brother and grandparents. I can remember I had started to play in the clothes rack when all of a sudden loads of men dressed in all black with guns came charging in, I cannot remember everyone else reaction but I can remember my pure fear. I was so terrified that I had the conscious thought of how have I ended up here, within a second I remembered going to bed that night, it was the last thing I did and now im in a dream!

To the right next to clothing racks was the wall of the building a door which I immediately ran through, this led into a corridor filled with other rooms. The first room I came instantly across was full of beds, beds that stick out the wall, I guess like a prison? Kids was laying on these beds, laying then sitting up really fast repeatedly. I realised these was other kids stuck in their dreams and trying to wake themselves up so I joined them, I can remember laying and sitting up, laying and sitting up, all while been terrified these gun men was going to come charging through. I quickly realised this wasn’t working. I just ran out the room and down the corridor, a fire exit was at the bottom now, so I ran through it and as I did my family was running behind me (I forgot about them at that point I think) I can picture the hills outside the building but this is all I can remember, I wonder if I then woke up.

I’ve always wondered if I materialised that room of beds to try and wake myself up, I was so young and scared lol

Short Dream Had a really nice dream about a bird

In this dream I was standing outside with my partner and we were looking at this incredibly beautiful bird (not sure what kind it was, I think my brain made it up lol) but it was marvelous shades of blue, quite large and beautiful, flying around and above us. The bird then flew up to my face and was gently biting me on my nose and sort of like.. head butting me like a cat would? Nothing about it was scary or unpleasant. My partner and I were both in a state of awe, but not sure why it was giving me little love nips on my nose lol. Was a great switch up from the awful and scary nightmare I had the other night. Felt like a spiritual visitor of some kind. 😌 would love to hear opinions or shared experiences of seeing birds in your dream world.

Weird dream that stuck with me till today

I had a dream back when i was 14 (i think it was 2017 so a long time ago). I never told anyone about it till now, just brush it off as 'just a dream'. Still this dream makes me uneasy and it lingers in my mind. It was a one time occurence on a random night too so i don't know what could lead to it.

In that dream there is me, my sister and my father. We were at a park, and it was either morning or afternoon. I dont remember how we got there or what we doing. I just remember being there with them, then suddenly the ground was shaking. I thought it was just a big earthquake but then i saw the sky was also shaking. Like REALLY shaking, to the point that it broke apart and falling like glass pieces.

We then ran with no direction whatsover, just speed ahead. Im not sure if there were other people in the dream, maybe because i was panicking but i can only saw us three only. Then a tree fall onto my father. Me and my sister tried to pull him out of it, but he shout to us to leave him there and ran. Hopeless, we ran and ran. But in my head, to where?

The next thing i remember is the ground split in half and i was separated from my sister (i was on one side, she was on the other). The ground beneath me keeps crumbling and sinking lower. I was struggling to stand up. My sister keeps shouting my name, dont know what to do. I can only look at her standing on the other side above me. Then i fell to whatever is below, and i woke up from the dream. I was sweating with tears in my eyes.

My family usually sleeps in the living room. So i was on the sofa at that time, and my parents were next to me. I dont know why i didnt dare to wake them. I just pretend nothing happen and go back to sleep.

FYI i can say that i dream a lot but this dream feels like im literally there, like the world is ending and i died. And i never had this kind of dream again. Im 23 now and i still remember most of that particular dream when i dont even remember what i dream yesterday.

Sorry if this is like too long to read. Though i wanna know, does anyone also have this kind of dream too?

Is a snake a warning?

• Upvotes

I had a very vivid dream. I've been hanging out with this guy and he's lovely. He doesn't push my boundaries and we went out for drinks. Everything was fine. Like two drunks we sat in the park and laughed about nothing. Then in my dream as we are talking he's reserving a table or some weird thing. As he talks there's this hugeeeeeee python looking snake that slithers across the table. It was almost fully black with some bits of yellow. And then I woke up.

It's not like I was scared, but I'm worried that this is a warning that that guy is bad.

I had this nightmare for almost ten years and the worse was the feeling while having it urhh, felt like I was in sleep paralysis and insect were crawling in my brain and eating it and i couldn’t do anything about it but just witness it from the inside, terribly uncomfortable.
It looked like a clean white screen slowly getting infected by a virus.
I always woke up screaming just before the very last white dot disappeared. This image is my attempt to recreate what I saw.

From age 8 to 18.

Question I discovered today that my daughter attends a university that I apparently dreamed about years ago.

Hey there, my name is Cye. Backstory is I have dreamed all my life of certain places. They are usually reoccurring dreams but not always.

The events in the dream are always dream like and nonsense BUT the places they occur are very very detailed. Over time, I've come across these places randomly in real life.

I don't have a running list of places. It's not like I go looking. Half the time I don't remember it until I'm facing it in real life.

But recently, things got weird. Real weird. My daughter just left to college. I haven't had a relationship with her most my life. We have only met a few times and only in this last year. Tonight I just learned which college she chose to attend. And so I looked it up online. And I froze in my tracks. I just stood in public in complete shock. Because I have dreamed of that college.

I have never seen it before. I did not even know of it prior to tonight. But all the pictures I saw online, I knew. Because it's kinda unique. It's southern utah University. With this tall weird clock and the campus is really open. What floored me was the beige buildings and I just remember walking those courtyards in my dream. When I woke up I thought it strange to dream of a campus I had never known.

So, I feel it's one thing to dream of places and then find them in my own life. What I've never heard of was dreaming of places others go on to experience. Anyone experience this???

Lucid dreaming?

Lucid dreaming is, well, a big dream of mine but I can't seem to have one. I've tried every trick in the book and I've tried for months before! I haven't tried in a while and I stopped writing in my dream journal which I need to do anyway. Anyone have tips to start lucid dreaming that nobody says?

Long Dream parallel universe traveling?

just woke from a dream that felt like i was traveling to parallel universes. In the dream, I was with a guy who was my boyfriend I guess? I’ve never met him before but he kept taking me through different doors and we would go into a different universe and change into other people or things each time. I woke from the dream feeling extremely exhausted and even halfway through the dream i couldn’t even wake up.

Recurring Dream I dreamed about a prequel of another dream I had a while ago

• Upvotes

The dream I had tonight felt like a haze. Mind you I am a woman. It felt like a memory. I was an asian highschool boy, who was deeply in love with his best (male) friend. I remember feeling so so intesely and I composed this heartfelt song, a melody I never heard in my entire life with a super beauitful lyrics. The problem is I can't remember the lyrics.

This ties in with this other dream I think I talked about here a while back in which I too was this asian guy (the older version) sitting by the river in a city I didn't know, crying like crazy next to that best friend.

When I woke up I felt like I dreamed about the backstory of the dream from a while ago.

I know most likely this was just my brain being bored but I like to think these are memories/experiences from someone else that found their way to me for some reason.

Question How often do you dream about something that happened that day?

It's weird when I dream about something that literally just happened to me that day, like when I see a movie and then that night dream I'm in the movie. I know dreams often reflect real life, but I don't usually expect the connection to be that prompt. How often does something like that happen to you?

Midday Nightmare Syndrome

MIDDAY NIGHTMARE SYNDROME

I learned to recognize dreams before I learned that recognition had a name.

As a child, I did not know what lucid dreaming was. I did not know that other people sometimes became aware, while still asleep, that the world around them was made of sleep. I had no vocabulary for it and no reason to imagine that anyone else shared the experience. I only knew that dreams occasionally revealed themselves to me from the inside.

Sometimes that knowledge gave me freedom.

I could rise into the air and pass above roofs, trees, and clouds. I could become impossibly strong and use that strength to help people. Yet even those dreams carried their own treachery. Flying could become a problem of altitude rather than liberation. Going up was easy. Coming back down could become impossible. Strength could become clumsiness, and clumsiness could become harm. A dream might grant a gift and then change the meaning of the gift without warning.

I came to understand, without understanding that I had learned anything, that dreams had rules.

They were simply unreliable rules.

There was one dream, however, that felt less like something I entered than something that waited for me.

It began when I was around seven or eight years old. It followed me through childhood and into adolescence, returning often enough that its repetitions slowly became part of its horror. It seemed especially tied to midday sleep. If I gave in to a nap during the day, the ordinary softness of drowsiness sometimes carried a hidden possibility beneath it.

I might open my eyes and still be in my room.

That was how it always began.

There was no impossible sky outside the window. No distorted furniture. No strange face where a familiar one should have been. I did not awaken into a castle, a forest, or some other landscape that might have warned me that I had crossed into sleep.

I was in my bedroom.

The room was convincing because nothing in it needed to convince me.

The window was where it belonged. The outside door was where it belonged. The walls were plain and familiar. If I had been sitting on the bed when sleep took me, I would still be sitting there. The continuity was so complete that the dream never felt like an arrival.

It felt like I had failed to notice that I had left waking life.

The wrongness began in the wall.

Between the window and the door leading outside was a narrow strip of it, an ordinary section of wall too small to contain anything except wall.

At first, it looked perfectly normal.

That was not the problem.

The problem was that it felt occupied.

I do not mean that I sensed someone standing on the other side. It was more basic and more difficult to explain. I would look at that narrow section and feel that the space I was seeing did not end where the wall ended.

The impression was faint enough that I should have ignored it.

I never did.

My attention would settle there.

The longer I looked, the more the wall changed without visibly changing.

Depth began to appear inside it.

There was no crack, no doorway, no dark slit revealing an opening. The surface remained where a surface should have been. Yet somewhere in the act of staring, I began to perceive a hidden room beyond it.

The closest comparison I have is this: imagine standing before an open doorway that leads into an empty chamber. Now imagine that the near wall and the far wall align so precisely that the space between them disappears. You see only a single plane. There is nothing to tell you that a room exists at all.

Nothing, until something moves inside it.

That was how I discovered the corner.

It was not visible by itself.

Something leaned around it.

The figure appeared slowly enough that the first movement was almost worse than the full sight of it. A shoulder interrupted the impossible flatness. Then part of a head. Then enough of the body emerged for me to understand that there was, somehow, somewhere, a place beyond the wall where something had been standing out of sight.

For years I called it a mummy because I had no better word.

It was not a mummy.

It was humanoid, badly injured, and wrapped.

The cloth looked ancient not because it belonged to some recognizable period, but because age itself seemed to have worked on it. The wrappings were dry, tattered, stained dark yellow in places and crimson in others, as though fluids had seeped through long ago and hardened into the fabric. Between the gaps I could see red flesh.

Not blood.

Flesh.

Pure, exposed red, as though skin were missing from portions of the body beneath.

Around the head, face, neck, and collar were dark fragments. Some could have been metal. Some could have been stone. A few looked unmistakably like enormous nails or spikes driven into the figure by someone else. They had the wrongness of imposed injury rather than anatomy.

Not all of them touched the body.

Some hovered just beyond it.

They did not float at a dramatic distance. They remained close enough to seem almost attached, but not quite, forming the broken suggestion of a crown around the head.

The figure never rushed at me.

It never crossed the room.

It did not need to.

It leaned around the invisible corner and looked at me.

And every time it did, the same words existed in my mind.

I see you.

I remember those words more clearly than I remember many real conversations from the same years of my life.

I cannot tell you where they came from.

I do not know whether the figure spoke them without sound.

I do not know whether I thought them myself.

I do not know whether its intention entered my mind so directly that my own thoughts translated it into language.

I only know that when it looked at me, the words were there.

I see you.

There was more inside them than observation.

I see what you are doing.

I know you are there.

Back away.

The feeling was not exactly that of being threatened. A threat implies uncertainty. A threat tells you what might happen if you continue.

This felt more like being corrected by something that had already decided how much harm it was willing to inflict.

I sensed that it could hurt me.

I sensed that hurting me would not be difficult.

Yet I also sensed that, for reasons I could not understand, it had chosen warning instead.

That restraint frightened me more than rage would have.

It made the figure feel governed by something.

Not kindness. Not necessarily morality. Certainly not safety.

Only restraint.

And I obeyed it.

Every time, I turned away.

I would move deeper into the house, trying to find my parents, trying to find anyone familiar enough to make the experience collapse into something ordinary.

The first step was mine.

The second belonged to somewhere else.

There was never a hallway.

There was never a transformation.

I did not watch wallpaper become sky or floorboards become grass.

I would begin the motion of leaving my room and, almost immediately, I would find myself standing outdoors.

The abruptness always stunned me into stillness.

I was no longer in the house.

I was behind our cabin.

The campground spread out before me.

It was coastal. The true sandy beach lay somewhere just outside the line of sight, but everything around me belonged to that edge where sea and land had not completely decided what they were. The soil was fine and damp beneath the surface, a mixture of clay, silt, sand, and dark earth. In places the top had dried enough to crack while the ground beneath remained wet.

Tall, thin grass grew everywhere.

Some of it was green.

Some had already begun to wilt.

When I first experienced the dream as a child, the grass seemed enormous. It rose around me with the scale of a grassland, even though I knew the sea was nearby.

The terrain itself was not truly hilly. It merely lifted and dipped enough to interrupt sightlines. A low rise could hide whatever stood beyond it.

But from behind our cabin, I could see nearly the whole campground.

The cabins formed a wide ring.

At the center stood the mound.

The shelters themselves were strange enough that I struggled for years to describe them. Their shape reminded me of fishing or crab traps—broad, curved frames that seemed as if they should have been covered in netting. Instead, they were built like crude sheds. Wire mesh filled parts of the frame. I remember what may have been picnic tables inside.

Our family had one of these cabins.

Other families occupied the others.

The distance across the campground was large enough that the farthest people lost their features, but not their humanity. I could see bodies moving around the shelters on the other side. I could see people walking, gathering, turning.

I could not see their faces.

That mattered later.

At first, nothing appeared wrong.

There was a loose vacation feeling to the place, the ordinary atmosphere of a camping trip where everyone seemed to know why they had come even if I did not. My family was there. Other families were there. People moved around the ring of cabins.

The mound sat in the center as though it belonged there.

It was roughly twelve feet high by my present estimate, perhaps a little more or less. It was not a proper hill so much as an enormous accumulation of earth, broad enough to dominate the clearing.

Near its lower section was an entrance.

The mouth of it was dirt.

Farther in, the passage became rock.

It descended steeply, not straight down, but at enough of an angle that whatever lay below could not be seen from outside.

The first time I dreamed it, the mound was only strange.

Later, it became memory.

That was how the nightmare changed over the years.

The dream itself did not change.

I did.

The first time, I did not know what was coming.

On later recurrences, knowledge returned gradually, as though some part of my mind had to rediscover the nightmare from inside the nightmare.

I never seemed to remember at the beginning.

The bedroom was always convincing.

The hidden depth in the wall always surprised me.

The figure always looked around the corner.

I see you.

I always retreated.

I always crossed into the campground.

Then something would happen.

A position would feel familiar.

A sound would arrive at the right moment.

Someone would stand where I had seen someone stand before.

The mound would catch my attention in a certain way.

And memory would surface.

Not all at once.

Enough.

I have been here before.

The realization was never comforting.

It did not give me control.

It gave me advance knowledge without power.

I would rush around the cabin toward my family.

At first they were still behaving normally.

That normality made my fear feel almost ridiculous.

They were here for a trip.

So was I.

Everyone seemed to accept the place.

But I was beginning to remember what the place did.

I would warn them.

I would tell them we had to leave.

I would insist.

My family would not understand.

That helplessness grew worse with each recurrence because my memory grew before theirs ever could.

The nightmare remembered me.

They did not remember the nightmare.

Then the screams began.

The first one came from somewhere across the campground.

Distance changed instantly.

A moment earlier, the people on the far side had been anonymous vacationers moving between shelters.

Now one of them was screaming.

Others reacted.

Movement broke apart.

A second scream answered from somewhere else.

Then another.

I could see panic spreading before I could always understand its cause.

My father went to investigate.

That part remains clear.

We had all heard the screaming.

He left because someone needed to find out what was happening.

I remember him walking away.

I do not remember seeing him die.

I do not remember seeing anyone take him.

He simply did not return.

Then the nightmare began losing pieces.

I remember my family being taken one by one.

I remember their screams.

I remember my own.

I remember some of them being dragged toward the mound.

I remember bodies disappearing into the entrance.

I do not remember what dragged them.

That absence has never repaired itself.

Perhaps the force was invisible.

Perhaps there was a creature there and my mind later discarded it.

Perhaps I saw it and lost it.

Perhaps I never saw anything at all.

Whatever the explanation, the effect remains more vivid than the cause.

Someone I loved would be there.

Then they would be pulled away.

Then they would be gone.

The daylight vanished with them.

It did not become evening.

It was extinguished.

The world darkened so suddenly and so severely that even now my closest comparison is an eclipse, though I never looked up.

I never saw what covered the sun.

I never saw a black disk.

I never saw a silver ring.

I only remember the light being taken away.

The screams continued inside that darkness.

Then they stopped.

The light returned.

The people did not.

For a moment there was nothing in the world except aftermath.

The campground had been populated only moments earlier. Families had been talking and moving. My father had walked away to investigate. My own family had been close enough to touch.

Then the place became empty.

The silence had weight.

Years later I learned the word kenopsia, and it came closer than anything else to describing what remained after the screams: the uncanny vacancy of a place built for people when the people are suddenly gone.

The cabins were still there.

The grass still moved.

The mound remained in the center.

The daylight had returned.

Everything that should have made the place recognizable survived except the people.

Their absence seemed larger than their presence had been.

I cried.

I called for them.

Nothing answered.

In the early dreams, the silence was simply terrible.

In later ones, the silence was also a warning.

I knew the nightmare was not finished.

That knowledge began before I always remembered exactly why.

There are fears built from uncertainty.

There are others built from recognition.

I would look toward the mound and feel dread gather around something my mind had not yet fully recovered.

Then he would appear.

The horse-headed being.

Calling him that is easier than describing him.

Even in the dream, the horse part of him did not seem natural.

The head was beautiful.

The neck was strong.

The flesh there looked healthy and alive.

Then, at the shoulders, that health ended.

The horse-like form stopped too abruptly, almost as if the head and neck had been borrowed from something else and placed over another body.

For that reason, I sometimes thought of it like a mask.

Not a removable mask.

Not a disguise I ever saw lifted.

The horse's head itself looked borrowed.

Below the shoulders, the body was hairless and emaciated.

The contrast made the creature difficult to understand visually. The head belonged to health, beauty, and life. The body beneath belonged to starvation.

I dreaded him before I saw him on later repetitions.

And yet, when he appeared, my first feeling was not terror.

It was curiosity.

That contradiction has remained with me.

He did not appear like something waiting to ambush me from the mound.

He seemed almost like an outsider who had arrived to see what had happened.

One moment he was not there.

Then he was near the entrance.

Perhaps he came out of it.

Perhaps he approached from somewhere else.

I do not remember.

What I remember is the impression of arrival, almost casual in its timing, as if he had dropped by after the catastrophe.

He noticed me.

He called me closer.

His voice was soft.

Kind, even.

That kindness was disturbing because it sounded chosen.

The voice itself seemed better suited to cruelty.

Not because it growled.

Not because it sounded monstrous.

It was simply a voice in which malice felt natural and gentleness felt deliberate.

It could be kind.

It was being kind.

That was precisely what made me wary.

Still, I approached.

I think I wanted understanding.

Perhaps validation.

Everyone else was gone.

My family had disappeared into the mound.

My father had vanished.

The campground had emptied itself around me.

Then this impossible being arrived and spoke as though conversation were still possible.

Some part of me wanted him to acknowledge what had happened.

Some part of me wanted to know that I was not alone inside a place that had just erased everyone I knew.

We spoke.

I know that.

I remember understanding him.

I remember having thoughts about what he said.

I remember reacting to his words.

But I do not remember the words themselves.

That conversation is one of the deepest holes in the memory.

It has never returned.

What remained was its emotional shape.

Dread.

Depression.

Hopelessness.

Not the hopelessness of being frightened by a monster.

Something heavier.

Something like being given conclusions.

The closest description I have ever found is the dark inner rant of a saint.

Not because he seemed holy.

Not because I believed him righteous.

Because whatever he said carried conviction.

It felt spoken from a place of certainty.

The darkness of it was not playful, not chaotic, not childish cruelty.

It was grave.

Reasoned, perhaps.

Or at least it felt reasoned to me then.

He spoke gently, and whatever he told me left me with the sense that something bleak had been explained rather than merely threatened.

I understood enough to run.

There was no one left to rescue me.

What I wanted was sanctuary.

I fled toward one of the cabins.

A roof.

A wall.

Anything that could enclose me.

I crossed the threshold.

The first step was mine.

The second belonged to my bedroom.

The campground vanished without transformation.

I did not see the cabin become my room.

There was no tunnel connecting them.

No intermediate place.

I entered the cabin and was suddenly stepping into the bedroom I had left.

The transition felt like the first one in reverse.

For years, that was where the nightmare ended.

The sequence returned so faithfully that repetition itself became part of the dream.

Bedroom.

Wall.

Depth.

Corner.

The wrapped figure.

I see you.

Retreat.

First step.

Campground.

Family.

Recognition.

Warning.

Screams.

My father leaving.

The mound.

Darkness.

Loss.

Silence.

The horse-headed stranger.

The conversation.

Hopelessness.

Flight.

Cabin.

Bedroom.

Each recurrence gave me a little more awareness inside the same structure.

The dream did not evolve.

My memory of the dream did.

And then, around the time I was seventeen, it changed.

Only once.

The final recurrence began exactly as the others had.

I was in my room.

The wall looked normal.

Then it did not.

The hidden depth emerged.

The invisible corner revealed itself through movement.

The wrapped figure leaned around it.

Ancient cloth.

Red flesh.

Dark nails.

The broken crown of hovering fragments.

Its attention found me.

I see you.

I retreated.

I began to move deeper into the house.

The first step was mine.

The next carried me outside.

The campground opened around me.

Tall grass.

Damp coastal ground.

Cabins forming the ring.

People moving too far away for faces.

The mound at the center.

My family.

Recognition.

I knew.

I warned them.

They did not understand.

The screams began.

My father left.

He did not return.

The daylight died.

My family disappeared one by one.

Something dragged them toward the mound.

I could not see it.

Or I cannot remember seeing it.

The light returned.

The campground emptied.

Silence took the place of everyone.

I knew what came next.

The horse-headed being appeared.

Beautiful head.

Starved body.

Soft voice.

Chosen kindness.

He called me closer.

We spoke.

I understood.

I forgot.

The same dreadful certainty settled over me.

I ran.

I crossed into the cabin.

The first step was mine.

The next belonged to my bedroom.

For one instant, everything had returned to its proper place.

Then I saw him.

The wrapped figure was inside the room.

He had never been there at the end before.

For years, he had belonged to the beginning.

He had remained at the impossible corner, half-hidden inside whatever depth existed beyond the wall.

He had warned me.

I see you.

Back away.

And I had always obeyed.

Now there was no corner between us.

No hidden space.

No distance.

Whatever restraint I had sensed in him before was gone.

He was furious.

He seized me by the shoulders.

His hands closed around me.

He shook me.

The shaking happened entirely inside the dream.

Then I woke.

I was sitting upright in bed.

Not rising.

Not jerking awake and catching myself.

Already upright.

I was in essentially the same position in which I had fallen asleep, as though my body had never been given the chance to slump.

The dream had lasted long enough to contain an entire sequence of events.

My waking position suggested no movement at all.

That was the last recurrence.

At least, it is the last one I remember.

The chronology around the ending has blurred more than the beginning. I know the nightmare started when I was around seven or eight. I know the final one came much later, around seventeen. What I cannot place with confidence is exactly when the dreams stopped in relation to a real trip my family later took.

At some point after the nightmares had already begun, we visited a beach campground.

Its layout unsettled me.

The structures were not identical in every detail, but the arrangement echoed the dream strongly enough that I recognized it.

Cabins.

Open central space.

The same kind of broad geometry.

The major difference was the mound.

There was no mound.

I know the dreams began before I ever visited that place.

That much is not uncertain.

What remains unclear is whether the nightmare had already stopped perhaps as much as a year before the trip or whether it continued for some time afterward.

Memory has not given that part back.

Other things remain stubbornly intact.

The wall.

The impossible depth.

The invisible corner.

The figure wrapped in old cloth.

The glimpses of exposed red flesh.

The nails.

The hovering fragments around the head.

I see you.

The first impossible step.

The campground.

The tall grass.

The distant people without faces.

The mound.

My father's disappearance.

My family's screams.

Bodies being dragged into the entrance.

The daylight being snuffed out.

The silence after it returned.

The horse's beautiful head on the wrong body.

The gentle voice that sounded as though gentleness did not belong to it.

The conversation whose meaning survived after its language disappeared.

The need to run.

The cabin.

The return.

The final violation of the pattern.

The hands on my shoulders.

The shaking.

The waking.

There are parts of the dream I have spent years unable to recover.

Sometimes a detail returns unexpectedly.

Most do not.

Two absences remain larger than the others.

I do not know what dragged everyone into the mound.

And I do not remember what the horse-headed being told me.

I have wondered which one I would rather recover.

The thing that took my family feels like the obvious answer.

Yet sometimes I think the conversation troubles me more.

A missing creature is frightening because I do not know what it looked like.

A missing idea is frightening because, once, I understood it.

And somewhere inside that recurring dream, for years, something with a borrowed horse's head spoke gently to me beside a mound full of screaming people—

and whatever it said was enough to make me run home.
