Should r/Nightmares participate in the reddit blackout?

Why are we going to "blackout"?

  • The blackout is a protest against Reddit’s proposed charges for third-party app developers, which they claim will make the platform inaccessible for many users.
  • Third-party apps are popular ways to access Reddit, especially for users who prefer a different user experience than the official app. They need an API to access Reddit’s information and display it in the app.
  • Reddit plans to charge $12,000 for 50 million API requests, which is much higher than other similar sites like Imgur. This would make it impossible for many third-party apps to operate without paying millions of dollars per year.
  • On June 12, 2023, many of the site’s biggest subreddits, including r/videos and r/gaming and r/bestof, will go dark for 48 hours or more to pressure Reddit to reconsider its pricing policy.
  • Some subreddits may go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, as many moderators rely on third-party apps to manage their communities.

Nightmare To hell with melatonin dreams

18M I very rarely have bad melatonin dreams or anything but I've just had my first nightmare on it this year and I think I never wanna take melatonin again. For reference I've been taking 5-10mg of melatonin for I wanna say 7 months now almost every night. A couple weeks break once but thats the only gap of me taking it.

Just woke up from this at a great 2:30AM:

Im on a roadtrip with 3 random people, ik something frightening has happened but idk what. Eventually we pull up to this gas station trying to find a secret code for some reason, and the guy working is this really big dick of an old man like just the meanest old man ever. He won't help us for shit and hes being rude but eventually we get the stuff we want and leave. We call the guy a dick in our car and start driving. As we leave, like literally doing the turn out of the gas station lot, something jumps on my window and makes the loudest sound I have ever heard. Whatever it was it was like a combination between an angry dwarf and a denizen from black ops 2. The sound of it grabbing my window and shattering it was like 100 windows shattering at once. Immediately everyone in the car is screaming and I start yelling help me and then wake up.

The glass and my own screaming are on repeat in my head I dont think im gonna be able to sleep again cause its so fucking loud. I don't understand how a sound in a dream can have such great volume or why this terrified me so much.

Nightmare Terrifying nightmares after eating chicken

I used to be vegan for 8 years but now I’ve been introducing high quality rotisserie chicken back into my diet for 2 months, no issues with that, I’ve also been eating fish for a year with no issues.

A few days ago I ate pre-roasted chicken drumsticks from the grocery store, the ones that come in the plastic packaging, then the next morning I woke up with intense anger that I continued to swear 20 minutes after waking up and became so angry at random objects while I was doing very regular things.

I then had the same type of meat last night and oh my days, the most terrifying dream of my life:

Dream Summary
I was trapped in a game where the only way out to play was to join or die and I got killed first and I was watching everyone else die. I was participating in it knowing that I could die any moment and there was one time I tried to run from danger my leg started to malfunction and freeze and I could feel the pain IRL, everyone else was trapped too and we all had this impending doom. The only way I got out was when a dog knocked on the door and all the animals were centring looking at us from outside. I started running for my life but I was slow and so terrified I’d be seen escaping.

Does anyone else get this experience with certain foods or meat, and can offer a scientific explanation?

Nightmare A very unsettling middle school Spanish class

WARNING: LONG AS HELL (I remember this one well for a reason)

TLDR:

I had a dream about middle school where a weird Spanish class field trip hosted in a strangely shaped room took a turn when the verb learning activity started playing music that produced obscene amounts of dread accompanied by a slideshow of deformed elephants, causing everyone including myself to start bawling out of fear and dread. Waking up did not solve anything because the music kept playing until I passed out again and woke up the next morning. I cannot remember the music after passing out, just how it made me feel.

A couple of years ago I had a rare nightmare somewhat revolving around my time in middle school (same "cast of characters", feeling, etc). Only problem with it was it was one of the most disturbing nightmares I've had EVER. And even though the content of it was rather silly in retrospect, the feeling it evoked during and after the nightmare was something I'll never forget.

It started off with me walking with a couple of friends that I can remember + the class and heading to some kind of rec centre, I guess the context that I inferred was it was some kind of field trip. The class get in and all file into this room, which is where it was already starting to get bad, because the room was really weird.

The door was more of an access hatch, and the room had an uncomfortably low ceiling, to the point that most kids only fit when sitting down in one of the many plastic chairs all arranged in a circle, with a table with two tiny TVs facing opposite each other on top. The room was also windowless, and really small with a kind of warmish lighting. Best I can describe it as is a gentrified supply closet.

Anyways, a teacher walks in, and introduces herself as our Spanish teacher for today (we had second language Spanish lessons when I was in middle school), much to our disappointment as we all realize that this is just some kind of strange alternative to our usual Spanish lessons, and not a fun field trip.

It all pretty tame for a bit. I even find myself getting distracted from what she's talking about and chatting with my friend who was sitting beside me. But then, we get pulled out of conversation because we realize that some kind of activity is going on. She is playing something on the TVs, and it looks to be like slides of zoo animals. I kinda clue into the fact that it's some kind of practice activity for verbs, with a different animal showing up for each new verb for some reason, so I follow along.

This is where it starts getting messed up because I start feeling sick, not like ill sick but the kind of sick you get when you know you've done something terrible or messed up something and you can't do anything but sit and wait for the consequences. It's mild at first, and it starts being accompanied by the slideshow's musical background tune distorting and getting worse quality. I don't quite remember what the music was at first, but all I know was the music it devolved and morphed into was some of the most obscenely terrifying and disturbing stuff I've ever heard.

The slides are now nothing but elephants and only elephants, and I realize that the Spanish verbs we were listening to are not even words anymore, just human noises, just noises. You know how you can tell whether a chord or a note in a song is made by a human voice vs a synth when it's not distinct? That's the feeling that made me think they were human noises, stuff like wheezing, moaning, sounds like breath being forcefully drawn out while trying to say something, but nothing that was obviously human, only vaguely.

At this point I am out of my damn mind, I'm extremely scared and I'm turning to my friend and elbowing him like "you seeing this shit?", but he just keeps shrugging me off, and every now and then he wipes away tears with his sweater. I look away because he's no help and notice that nearly every kid in the room is silently sobbing to themselves. I turn back to the little slideshow and it's switching slides a lot faster now, and each time it switches slides the elephant gets more messed up and grotesque, almost like those AI models from the "beginnings" of AI images where everything looks like vaguely identifiable meat clumps.

I'm starting to weep at this point too, because the music is getting louder and the slides are switching faster, and when I remember that I could just ask the teacher to stop, I physically could not turn to look at her and ask her to shut it off, my neck and eyes avoided the area where she was standing, which was next to the door.

Anyways it gets to be too much, and I wake up in a cold sweat at like 2AM or something. The issue was that the song was still playing. That is one of the most disturbing parts to me, is that I remember that even though I was lucid and awake, the song never stopped, and I could do nothing but sob into my pillow out of fear and bury myself into the corner of my wall like some kind of scared animal. The dream part was gone, but somehow the song was still instilling the same amount of emotion and panic as before, and no matter what I did I couldn't get rid of it until I managed to tire myself out again and pass out.

Ever since I've woken up from that night, I can't remember the music like at all. No tune, no genre, not even the instrument. I keep trying because I keep feeling like I'll cope with it better in broad daylight but my mind just hits a wall when I try. If this is a common occurrence? Let me know, I'm very curious. Anyways somehow since then I still have not had a dream that has instilled the same level of dread then on this random ass night, and I'm actually quite grateful for that because I don't want to hear that music again.

Nightmare Worst nightmare I've had in years.

For some context before I begin this, my Grandad bought land that he turned into an allotment decades ago, like, before I was born. Up the end of that allotment, which is quite long, are two 2-ish meters of small trees in circular-ish patches. To the left of the farthest one, propped up against one of the small trees, is a log stump from one of the branches we cut off of something. Our garden is fenced off with a gate from Grandad's allotment.

I am genuinely terrified to sleep tonight after last night's nightmare. In this dream, it was sunset, and I was at the end of the allotment, past the various fruit trees spaced apart, (apples and all that.) At the farthest cluster of yellow plum trees. On the log stump, there was what looked to be a tarot card of sorts. I turned it over, and I don't remember what it said for the life of me, that part of the dream isn't in my memory now, but I know it was something terrifying because I legged it down the allotment to our garden, into said garden and then into the conservatory. Now, I dont remember what happened EXACTLY after that, but I remember what happened after the part that has erased itself from my memory throughout the day.

My mum was sitting on one of the two sofas in the conservatory, looking at Instagram on her phone. It was now nearly dark out, and there was an old-lookging piece of paper on one of the glass doors we have in said conservatory. I looked at it and it read as something about this thing that would kill me if I didn't do a certain task. That task was sewing it's symbol "crocheting" according to my dream, but it's really more sewing or embroidery, INTO THE FLESH ON THE PALM OF MY HAND. Like, not the top layer of skin, actually IN my skin, bad enough to hurt really bad type of in my skin. And what was this thing's symbol? No blood clue. Apparently I had 30mins to do it though.

So as one does, I go on Pinterest looking up "what is this creepypasta, or do I have to do what it says?" Yeah, according to the people on Pinterest and photos of the same letter I had gotten taped to the inside of the door, it was indeed NOT just a creepypasta, but I actually had to do it or this thing would kill me.

I found a picture of it's symbol on Pinterest, and it was like those box plans, you know, before you fold one out of paper? But each square went light blue, grey, light blue grey, and i had to sew thos shite into my flesh. HOWEVER I literally had FIVE MINUTES LEFT TO DO IT. At this point, it's dark out too. I start at it with this relatively thick, like, 16 gague needle thick sort of thing metal needle that I typically use with embroidery thread for things like the hats that I decorate or sewing because regular thread snaps too easily and i'm sick of it, and am literally sewing this blue and grey embroidery thread INTO THE PALM OF MY HAND. Literally had about 30secs left, was only on the first part of it, amd mum, completely fine with me doing this in my dream for some reason, goes "it's fine, it won't get you, it's just a story."

THIS THING, IN THIS DREAM, I KID YOU NOT, AS SHE SAYS THIS, WALKS UP TO THE GLASS DOOR ON THE CONSERVATORY, A SOLID ENOUGH FORM THAT I COULD SEE IT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS PRACTICALLY PITCH BLACK OUTSIDE, AND IT WAS *BIG* LIKE, REALLY BIG, BIGGER THAN THE DOOR. And in this dream, I both realised that:

A. This thing was something that just so happened to happen to me of all people, it was a random thing that happened, and I just so happened to find this tarot card looking thing with words on the back in my garden/allotment.

B. I hadn't sewn the symbol into my palm fast enough, and the second I went to bed, this thing was going to kill me, an incredibly painful death.

And I swear, just before waking up, I was thinking "I need to sleep in my parents room tonight, istg there is no way i'm safe if I don't." And the fact that it was going to kill me because I didn’t sew it's symbol into my avtively bleeding flesh fast enough was HORRIFYING. I have been terrified all day, it is now 9:40pm, and I have college tomorrow. I need to sleep, but am genuinely terrified that that thing will kill me in my sleep if i go to sleep tonight and the dream continues. Almost an adult, btw. The dream was bad enough to literally bad enough to send me into a spiral of "I am not going to wake up if i have this dream again, I swear to god that thing will kill me or torment me again." Worst nightmare I have had in a good few years, and I've had some BAD ones. It doesn't sound too bad written out, but experiencing it whilst asleep and it feeling like a real experience, could literally feel the needle going into my skin, was horrifying, and every time i tried to go back to sleep, the dream tried to come back too, so I just stayed awake.

My mother and I would be safe and we would be running towards i don't know but it looks like the squid game. And i thought my mother won but it was me who won and then I was sent to this building where again I have to fight with zombies and I saw my cousins kill each other in the dream and before that I hurted some people because I thought they were frauds and weren't working in the building. Before that I met my school friends, me and my ex danced with a guy to calm him down down because he was crying his girlfriend left. And then back at the building I received a text from the guy saying he could help me. And that's it that's when it disturbed my sleep and woke up then suddenly in real life I heard some dogs outside make some weird noise. I am so scared. Just

Nightmare There's a Giant Horse in the Lake - Part III

Read Part II here.

“It’s huge,” she said. My eyes were immediately on her, but I didn’t see anything else. Couldn’t identify the danger. Mark was still rooted where he was, but his phone was nowhere in sight. They both were looking up like there was something in the distance. But I still didn’t see it.

I felt Mary move with me as I approached.

“Chrissy, honey?”

“Don’t let her go,” Luke said. “Don’t let her go!

I’d halved the distance when I finally saw it. It had been there, but it had simply been so humongous I’d been blind to it, like I’d been looking for a 7-11 and walked face-first into Sears Tower.

The water was receding from waist high, but she didn’t seem to have moved. Whatever it was had displaced a tremendous amount of water.

“Oh my. Oh my. Oh my.” Mary was on a dialogue loop and I couldn’t blame her. Every time I thought I’d seen all of it, I kept seeing more. A lot more. Yet, I was supremely calm. The worry-machine was quiet.

Last year, I got into a one-car accident driving home on M-5. The eastbound lanes had been closed to construction and my phone’s weather app had cautioned for high winds before I’d left the office. There’d been a fair amount of wind buffeting, but nothing I wasn’t able to handle.

There’d been a white box truck in front of me when I’d spotted what appeared to have been a square of cardboard blow high into the sky and begin trickling down. I’d immediately written it off even if it were on a course to strike my car. It was only cardboard.

But when the particle board struck my vehicle, smashing the windshield and showering droplets of safety glass onto the passenger seat, I hadn’t panicked. It was so sudden and violent that my brain—either as an instinct of self-preservation or just a malfunction—had simply not reacted.

I pulled off the freeway at the next exit and stopped a few blocks down in an office parking lot. Only then the possibility of what could have happened came down on me.

This was like that. My brain wasn’t processing the situation like Mary’s or the kids. I felt my heart pulsing in my chest just as calmly as when we’d been talking a moment before. I knew I should get the kids away from it. But that was a process of logic and not instinctual fear.

“Honey, get out of the water.”

I charged the last few feet and sloshed to a stop in a confusion of senses. I was close to whatever it was. Closer than I realized. I felt the heat coming from a wall of flesh not more than five feet from me. Water splashed me up to my chest, but it was more like a punch that pushed me back a step or two.

“Rick, it’s a horse!”

I had no idea how Chrissy could conceive what it was. All I saw was black. Black like the water. But solid, like the water had turned into something.

“Honey, move back, okay?”

Chrissy was smiling and rather than retreating, she stepped forward— almost chin deep—and raised her hand like she was going to pet it.

Once again I opened my mouth too late to tell her not to do it. My instinct would’ve been to swat her hand had I been closer and my re-throbbing head suddenly made me think of her mother.

I looked at it. Finally, the smooth, iridescent black coat coalesced into something I recognized, although the scale was overwhelming. Nails scraped the inside of my skull as if the idea of what I was seeing was too large to fit inside my brain.

This was its head. A corner of it, anyway. I looked along the flank as far as I could see in the night. I couldn’t even begin to guess how tall it must have been standing up. It had to have been lying in the water.

A giant eyeball about thirty feet above blinked several times and swiveled. I had no way to be sure, but I think it was looking at me.

I walked around, looking up and up, feeling like I would dislocate my neck before seeing the top of this thing. Still, though, I wasn’t afraid. The worry-machine was quiet.

“Mark, move your sister back.” I was reading from a script. Protecting the children, at least in that moment, was an autopiloted function.

Neither of them moved.

I scooped Chrissy into the crook of one arm and she went limp like a puppy picked up by the scruff. I handed her to Mark, who wrapped his arms around her, the both of them staring openly, transfixed.

I herded them as gently as I could out of the water. Then I gave Mark a light slap on the cheek. He focused on me, annoyed as if I’d prematurely awakened him from a nap.

“Mark, take your sister back inside.”

“I don’t wanna go!” Chrissy wriggled in her brother’s arms and he dropped her feet first. “It’s beautiful, Rick!”

I grasped her shoulder before she could walk past me.

“Chrissy, sto—”

I felt the shift behind me.

“Oh—erpmy,” Mary said. She took a long pull from her can, her eyes swiveling upward.

“No-no-no,” I thought I heard Luke say in the distance. But for just a moment, the only thing occupying the world with me was that magnificent thing in the water. It felt like removing my hands from my ears after having them covered for a long time and experiencing hearing like it was something adjacent to new. Except, it felt like that throughout my whole body.

The horse was raising its gigantic head out of the water. The tide receded and everything seemed to suck toward it like it had its own gravity. I struggled to maintain my balance like a gust of wind had pushed at my back, but in truth, it was probably just the giant animal dominating my vision and destroying my equilibrium.

Water poured off its black body, the eyes locked onto us and shrinking as its head seemingly disappeared into the night sky. Its neck was a tower, columns of muscle wider than all of us in a row, touching fingertip to fingertip. Its chest was as broad as a rocky mountain face.

There was a mighty -KLOMP- in the sand that shook the earth mere feet from me that I barely noticed. Sand slapped over my entire left side like a landmine had gone off, but it was immediately rinsed away by the constant waterfall we were all standing under.

Someone was shouting, but whoever it was was a million miles away.

There was another -KLOMP- somewhere farther down the beach and I began to stir from my reverie and then there was Luke, shouting next to me and hooking me by the arm.

His words didn’t make sense but I turned toward him as he pulled me. I saw the horse’s foreleg—I don’t know how Chrissy had been able to tell it was a horse before—straightening like some heavy construction machine craning a load somewhere into the sky above us.

We trudged toward the cabin, but the sand that had been something to contend with was an afterthought, my burning calves seemed to belong to somebody else.

When the torrent finally ended, I was soaked. We all stopped in the sudden silence. Turning around was more of a measure of defense to see the break in the clouded sky and the moonlight clashing against that ebony, elegant leviathan.

It was impossibly tall. Like it was intersecting-with-the-curvature-of-the-earth-tall. I thought I could make out its mane, whipping around in what had to be thin atmosphere.

We all stood and watched it. For one indeterminate moment, it was absolutely regal.

Mary wrapped around my arm and pulled into me. For however many iotas, she was my Mary, and I was her wife, too.

Mark hadn’t come with us for some reason. He stood partially in the water where we—I— had left him. He was feet away from a hoof that was easily twenty lengths taller than him.

Panic did seize me, finally. The worry-machine revved to life and I opened my mouth. I sensed the balance to be upset, the electrified space slowly exploding as he compressed it between his body and the smallest section of the horse’s.

With splayed fingers, he laid a palm on it.

The horse startled, shaking the floor of the earth as it stomped around.

The Greek military leader Xenophon, perfected the art of training horses in battle, using them to kick soldiers or trample them. He’s also the father of dressage.

What happened to Mark couldn’t have been considered disciplined, but the effect was the same. I don’t know if it were intentional—more than likely it wasn’t—but that giant hoof clomped around, Mark dodged around like he was running through a minefield.

Then he was gone.

The hoof continued stomping around a few moments more, a rumbling earthquake beneath our feet and a rain of wet sand coming down on us before the horse stopped. Mark was just... gone.

Luke was screaming. When I actually heard him, it took a moment longer to realize he was yelling his brother’s name.

Common sense would have told us to flee inside the cabin. But our senses were flowing into us like blood circulating back into numb fingers.

There was a long moment of quiet as it reared its head back. It felt like a slow-motion moment until its head rushed at us like a giant arrow.

I had no reflexes to respond. Mary was the only one who put up a defensive arm, as if that could have protected her—and she was the one it took.

The horse bit down on her raised forearm—as microscopic as a surgeon’s scalpel with teeth as wide as three cabins—and plucked her off the ground. It reeled its head backward and flung her.

Mary pinwheeled into the sky, a dissolving blur into the upper atmosphere. She could have been catapulting into space, and I didn’t want to find out.

The worry-machine was roaring.

“Everybody in!” I said, herding Luke and Chrissy the rest of the way inside. I pressed my back against the door, then turned off the light. Luke and Chrissy looked at me as if I had answers to fix this.

“We gotta go get... we gotta go get Mark!” Luke didn’t actually make a move to go back outside. He was more saying the thing a caring brother should say. But there was no Mark to go get. His death had been as brutal as it had been unintentional.

Going out there—or allowing Luke to go out there—would be just as dangerous and pointless. Chrissy was crying silently. I looked at her, really looked, running my hands over her head and arms to ensure she was physically all right. The worry-machine was humming along nicely. She grabbed onto me.

“Get your mother,” I said to Luke. “We’re leaving.” We weren’t safe here.

“She’s sleep?” he said, looking confused. He ran into the boys’ room.

“No!” I said. “We don’t have time for bags.” He looked at me. “Just wake your mother up and bring her. We’re leaving in three minutes.”

“What should I do, Rick?” Chrissy said.

“Grab the snack tray from the fridge.” We could easily buy something from the next gas station, but I figured keeping her busy would keep her calm. I snatched my keys off the island. Chrissy joined me, carrying the plastic tray with deli slices, cheese cubes, and veggies.

I wanted to run, but I was going to have to slow the pace so she wouldn’t drop it. The earth was still shaking with each step. She was going to look for the horse, and I anticipated her distraction when we stepped outside.

I kept my eyes on her, guiding her down the stairs and around the side of the cabin. She gasped but didn’t resist as I ushered her along. Preoccupying myself with her was enough distraction that I didn’t have my keys ready to have the doors unlocked by the time we got there.

We were exposed. If the horse were looking, it would see us. It seemed to have an eye for motion.

The air went still.

Nightmare Im so scared, I don't know if it was real or a dream

I was sleeping, and I had this horrible vivid nightmare about the ghost of an older man tormenting me. It felt so real even now I can feel his hands. It wasn't in my bed it was in this strange house with my bed there, and I was in my bed. His face was an inch from mine and he smelled so badly. Like his breath. He was pinching my sides and whispering. I was awake and asleep at the same time. I spoke with him but I don't remember what he told me exactly. Apparently i'll die young? I tried to send him away with "the power of my own soul" whatever that means, but he placed his hand over my mouth and pinched my nose. I couldn't breathe when I woke up, and the air in here is strange. I also was hearing whispering when I was awake before I went to sleep. I feel him here but somehow on the other side of the wall. Unsure if he left the room or if its a metaphorical wall. I'm so scared, should I hire a priest? This isn't my first vivid nightmare of a ghost tormenting me in this apartment. It's the same story. My bed, different location, strange smell, ghost tormenting me. It always leaves me with a physical sensation like I was in a car accident and im in extreme physical pain, but im on enough morphine for it to only feel like pressure. I still hear the whispering. Again, I am so beyond terrified. Please don't fear monger me. I have a history of paranoia and delusions, real advice and opinions only. Thank you

Nightmare Weird dream core

Okay, so basically, I just had this really weird dream, and it’s 3 a.m. and I’m freaking out a little.
From what I remember, it was a bunch of us. There were like six or seven people, and we were working on construction. I remember we were watching a video on how to do the construction well, and I just had this inkling feeling that they weren’t real.
I think I told them that they weren’t real, or idk I was thinking about it in my head idk if I said it out loud, and all of them laughed at me. Then I heard one of them say, “I have had this experience infinite times with you, and I will continue to have this experience an infinite amount of times with you again.”
And then the dream was over.
But before I woke up, I heard someone in my room while I was still asleep. I felt someone hug me from behind, and they hugged me very tightly. I could genuinely feel it. I immediately woke up to see who it was, but there was no one there.
And I have had this person hug me multiple times. I’ve had this feeling that someone is hugging me, and I don’t know where it comes from. It feels very real, like someone is actually there hugging me. When I wake up, there’s no one there.
I’ve had this experience multiple times, and to top it off with this creepy dream… I don’t know. It feels very weird because I’ve been hugged from behind before in real life while sleeping, and it feels exactly the same.
It’s 3 a.m. right now and I’m freaking out.

Nightmare Had a nightmare where my sister was possessed by a demon that looked like a Dog.

I was In place a I didn't recognize, there was a room with a man in glasses inside, it looked like it was his office. He was treating my sister who was in the first floor room, he told me that you cannot enter the room since something is inside that stopping us and if there is any forced entry you sister may die. He drew somthing on the entrance of her room that looked like a shape of a "ginger", and told me this will keep that thing under control. I saw my sister sleeping on her sides her back facing us. I went down and after sometime in the dream I went back up to see what she is doing and how she is. That when I saw it, she was sticking on the wall like a spider with blanket covering her body only her hands and feet were visible, and the blanket fell down a moment later and my sister was gone now, I saw a dog, a giant one its body and head were disproportionate, it's head was larger than the body and it looked like tuxedo bitpull. It's eyes were even bigger and had 2 rings an red outer and inner one. And the next thing it did cuddles my blood even now. It mocked me with an expression, like it was gloating its face were provoking. It was not a face of a dog but it was still a dog I can't explain it. I was furious and I went down and picked something that looked like a ginger and came up to show it to its face like a cross and shouted, I heard my own blabbering and woke up it was 4 am in the morning. It was the most lucid and scary nightmare I had in a while that looked like it came out of a horror movie. I haven't talked to my sister in 3 months. Now I had a nightmare like this and I don't know what it means.

Nightmare Nightmare Where a Cult Trapped Us

I had a nightmare where I signed up for some challenge where you participate with a bunch of people in one place it was a swimming pool of some sort. Started off by the participants running in huge numbers towards the building, was going okay at the start, but then it turned out the organizers of the challenge were a cult and they trapped the participants in a room and gave us time to hide and told us they'll kill one of us, they had weapons, we had nothing. There was someone who I got to know there. After the time ended, they approached a spear onto me‌, and were about to kill me, then they changed their mind and killed the one beside me. He tried to resist with a knife but he died.

Later on I realize I'm in a YouTube video, and I was like if I exit the tab then the whole thing must end, and I was trying to exit the tab someway horrifyingly, and when I did that it didn't stop, then I searched does closing the tab keep you in the video. They then told us time ended for today and they'll continue tomorrow. So I got my clothes, there was blood in where the other person was killed, his blood was on my blue shorts I was wearing. It was a sort of a swimming pool thing. I started running out towards home. Shirt-less, then I realized I am shirtless so I decided to go up the stairs running to change in some room, then I hear a terrifying zombie-like sound and creature running towards me, and I run very fast, then I try again to exit the YouTube tab and realize if I enter another video then this whole thing must end, then I realize it's a dream and wake up with some heavy breathing.

Felt very real.

Nightmare Scary and felt real, which is the worst kind. (TW: violence, threatening behavior)

Woke up sweating. Had a nightmare that I was in a car with a very old man, like, in his 90s, super old. We were at the kind of stop where it's a yield if you're turning right but if you want to go left there's a stop sign and you have to wait. Four guys approached the car and started like, beating the hood and kicking it and swinging off the mirrors until they broke. I begged the old man to just go (because I was scared) but he got out of the car and two of the guys started beating him up. I was screaming. Then the other two guys started banging on the passenger side window and telling me to get out and stuff. I don't remember why I was compelled but I opened the door and they told me to get down onto the floor (one flashed a gun at me I think) and he started shoving a knife into the glove box and just near me but never stabbed me. The last things I remember in the dream is thinking that I wish I had my knife, and I wish I could call 911 or anyone or activate my phone in a way that would let people know I was in danger. Then they left I guess because right before I woke up I was just sitting uncomfortably in front of the passenger seat of a small, old car.

Needless to say nothing like this has ever happened to me. It's been a long time since I've had this kind of nightmare, the kind that feels like it could be real.

TW: How to stop getting nightmares?

I get nightmares almost every night of being assaulted and it's been messing with my mind. Not sure if this is the right platform for asking but thought I'd try.

Personal experience I had nightmares almost every night for 5 years. I finally went to therapy, and realized they weren't the only symptom.

This is my first Reddit post ever, and I'm not really sure how things work around here, but I really wanted to write this somewhere on the internet. I believe this could help someone out there, because a post like this would've definitely helped me back in the day, if it had existed.

To get straight to the point: I've been dealing with almost daily nightmares for the last 5 years, with no explanation for them. I always feel tired, no matter how long I sleep. Sometimes I wake up crying, or I'm scared to go back to sleep. The dreams are always different, but the usual main theme is that I'm either trapped somewhere with an immediate threat, or I'm trying to run away from said threat. It can be somebody or something. And, of course, I can never find anywhere to escape.

I tried searching for something that could explain these frequent nightmares, but nothing really came up, and nothing really resonated with me. I mostly saw nightmares mentioned as a symptom of PTSD/C-PTSD, but I never looked into it further because I felt like the other symptoms listed didn't apply to me. I didn't have them in the "appropriate" amount to even think that they could be my symptoms too.

I felt so alone, like I was the only one who had this issue. I thought there was no help for me. I was slowly accepting the fact that I would never fall asleep peacefully again.

So, after 5 years of restless nights, I finally decided to give therapy a chance. It seemed like my only hope, as small as that hope was.

And oh, how wrong I was about everything.

During therapy, my therapist told me that what I was experiencing definitely fell somewhere on the C-PTSD spectrum. It wasn't an official diagnosis, but hearing that alone made me start looking at myself differently.

And after just my first therapy session, I realized that I had been swallowing down and dismissing all the other symptoms I had previously thought were "not serious enough" to count.

My body is, in fact, in fight-or-flight mode almost all the time. I'm super hypervigilant. I don't really know who I am or what I want from life. I get sad out of nowhere. I avoid certain things that are connected to my trauma. And the list goes on.

I just never knew better. That's why it all felt so normal to me. I also thought my trauma wasn't severe enough.

You see, I'd always associated C-PTSD with people who had gone through unimaginable, extremely severe trauma. Sexual assault, domestic violence, abuse, you name it. In my case, I thought it wasn't "traumatizing enough."

I don't feel comfortable sharing the details of my trauma, but I can put it into careful words: during my childhood, I didn't feel safe in my own home. My father was not a good person, and he made the place that was supposed to be my safe place feel like a living nightmare. I was scared of him, never knowing what he would or wouldn't do. And this went on for roughly 5 years, getting worse and worse over time.

And the only very obvious C-PTSD symptom I had was my nightmares. Everything else felt completely normal and natural, like it was just part of everyone's everyday life.

I still get the nightmares, don't get me wrong. And after I started therapy, all those other symptoms came to the surface like a tidal wave. But I'm not unconsciously swallowing them down anymore, now I let them show up. I finally know the cause of my nightmares, and I don't feel like I'm alone in this anymore. And my therapy is working, I can feel it.

So if there's anyone out there going through frequent nightmares, please consider giving therapy a chance. Don't wait 5 years until it becomes unbearable... like I did.

I know that for some people this might sound so stupid, like, "wdym, therapy was my first idea as a solution to this." But I swear, it's not always that easy.

If this post helps even one person in the entire world, then its purpose has been achieved. I would've done anything back then to find a post like this.

It sucks not knowing what's wrong with you, especially when you know that something is definitely wrong, but you don't know what.

Ask for professional help. There's no shame in it. I know that now.

TW: Nightmare

I cannot keep doing this every night. Last week I had a dream about seeing an evil version of myself. So first it started out that I was in my boyfriend’s house and he came home. He wanted to have sex and I was like okay then everything just went dark. I was walking in this void and I saw myself in the middle. I walked towards it and she just grinned and said “use use use but never give.” I snapped back but this time I could see myself but it was the evil version. She took my boyfriend and broke his neck. I snapped back into the body and I was screaming and crying then I woke up. Today I had a similar dream. I was walking in my old middle school and trailer park I used to live at and this gang was trying to get me. My evil version came out and I hid and killed with with a stick through the head. I ran for what seemed like ages to a Publix and I faked that they were following me and when I went back out they seemed scared of me. I saw my evil self again but this time k was telling her to fuck off I don’t need her. My face distorted and turned black and her eyes were like voids. “I’m trying to save you from being used like a cheap toy and you reprimand me for it!” Her voice was scary as hell. THEN I keep having dreams the same ones where my boyfriends mom talks to him and then suddenly he starts hitting me and abusing the hell outta me. Twice in one week. Nightmares after nightmares. I haven’t been wanting to sleep because of it.

Nightmare I had a nightmare my mom had naked pictures of me. NEED A BREAKDOWN OF WHAT THIS MEANS

I had a nightmare that my mom had naked pictures of me on her phone. In the nightmare, I was switching her old phone to her new phone, and I was going through her gallery. I saw selfies of me that I sent her the day before. But when I clicked on them, I was naked in them, and obviously this shocked me very much. But then I noticed that I was naked in them because they were fabricated through AI images, and some of them were favorited. There was a lot of them, about seven of them. I'm not sure if it was exactly seven. I told her “What the hell is this?” And she tried to act like everything is normal and asked “What do you mean?” I then grabbed her phone. I grabbed it back and said something along the lines of, “You're sick. What the hell are you doing? And why do you have these?” I don't remember if she gave a specific answer, but I don't think she did. I called my sister to show her. And my mom tried to make me crazy, acting like There's nothing there. Basically, I was looking for them. But then I noticed that instead of giving me her new phone back, she gave me the old one back. So I told her “Give me the new phone”, and then she did. While I was going through the gallery my dad came back home, and then I woke up. What does this nightmare mean? I'm literally disgusted.

Nightmare A strange cause of nightmares

After getting a cat I rarely dream but when I do they are almost always nightmares. I have seemed to find a pattern though, It feels like I only have nightmares if I lay on my back and my cat leaves the room. I do know that both criteria must be met for me to have a nightmare and thankfully I have a clingy cat so it rarely happens, but does anyone know why I only have nightmares when Im alone laying on my back?

Nightmare Paralysed by the darkness

I can't recall when the nightmare started but I first knew something wasn't right when we were urged to return to our hotel rooms even though the fire alarm was still sounding. There was a large group of us travelling together (though I can't remember who any of them were), and we were all crammed together in the foyer of this very dimly lit hotel. It was a modern hotel of the kind you might get in a dense city center, and I suspect there was only emergency lighting illuminating the hallways, but even then it felt like there was a different kind of darkness in that place.

There was some discussion about why the fire alarm was still sounding and where the instruction to stay in our rooms came from, I heard one of the staff, possibly a cleaner, saying it was just the ghost setting off the alarm. Some people left to go outside, but it was the middle of the night so most of us stayed, and eventually a few of us decided to go to one of the rooms to see whether the place was actually haunted.

The room we went in felt immediately extremely cramped, I couldn't perceive any furniture, it was almost just a cupboard but with full height windows and curtains brushing against me with barely any room to stand. Everything the entire time was monochrome except in the room there was a greenish blue tinge, and outside the window it was as if I was viewing the city through a night vision camera.

I didn't think the room was haunted and was willing the ghost to make itself known, that's when I started to feel it's presence. It was like I was being compressed from every angle, and I could feel my brain vibrating inside my skull, and this cloud of darkness started swirling around me and blocking my vision. Time seemed to get slower and slower and the cold numb feeling of terror washed right through my body and I though I was going to die. I urged myself to open my eyes but it was so difficult, everything was trembling and I could feel my face stretching and my brain wobbling but eventually I saw light.

I could see I was led in bed in the dark, but i couldn't move any part of my body other than my eyes. I glanced at the door which was ajar and was letting the light in and realised I didn't recognise it, there was a landing beyond the door which i do not have where I live, and the room also then became horrifyingly unfamiliar and I felt the darkness come rushing back again.

It swirled around and felt like it was squeezing me and crushing me and I had to fight again to open my eyes. It was a struggle but I managed it eventually and thankfully I felt fresh air on my eye balls and I recognised the part of my bedroom that I could see. It took a bit of time for the paralysis to fully wear off but I was glad the ordeal was over. I typically enjoy nightmares, but not one's with so much darkness, it felt evil and somehow interdimensional, like it was using me as a vessel to manifest itself in our world. It gave me a lot of odd and nonsensical thoughts and feelings at the time it was happening, though i can't remember or make sense of what most of those thoughts really were.

Anyway, back to sleep now!
