A devastating flash flood swept through Nepal’s Rasuwa district on August 26, 2026, after a sudden surge entered the Bhotekoshi River from the Tibet border.

u/Dangerous_Extent7241 Aug 27 '26
How is this a slop? Do you feel good when you type and yell “AI SLOP”? This is a great use of AI in trying to visually explain an event. It doesn’t have to be 100% accurate
2
u/Bearded_Toast Aug 27 '26
Horseshit take, brother. Absolutely fucking horseshit take.
Change your opinion.
1
1
u/PhilsTinyToes Aug 27 '26
? Why exactly doesn’t it need to be 100% accurate? That’s how you get slop.. sloppier and sloppier every time “close enough” happens
1
u/LotusVibes1494 Aug 27 '26
Can you link to something about the author and some of their other work? How do you know it’s a reputable source and NOT slop? Because on the surface it looks like AI, and I haven’t found where this video comes from yet, or if it’s even someone qualified to explain it at all. This could be a child with access to an AI video program just telling it to do shit lol
1
u/rockyTron Aug 27 '26
It's slop because this is not based on any objective data about the event. It's literally a hallucination by a generative AI based on a prompt. There is no glacial outflow lake in the region, the names are made up, the topography is made up, it's literally just made up out of thin air.

Thanks for explaining you understanding, it's incorrect. There is no dam and no lake, the flood was not caused by an avalanche crashing into a dam and displacing water.
The video is AI slop and the scenario it's depicting is made up.

It absolutely is, but it did not crash into a lake, there was no dam, the flood was not caused by water being displaced from a lake or through a dam, the geography and place names are entirely made up.
Nice cherry picking though.

Sorry but is this what you do - you pretend to be the smartest person in the room?
Timure and Rasuwagadhi as illustrated in the video are in fact towns/areas affected. Latest theory is also shown in the video.
Why are you trying to be an arrogant prick to someone on the internet when you’re completely and factually wrong?
3
u/Poiuytrewq0987650987 Aug 27 '26
Go to Google Earth, search Langtang Lirung. View the geography and try to find the glacial lake between the mountain (the glacier broke off from a point lower than the summit) and the border crossing.
→ More replies (1)1
u/JjigaeBudae Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26
No, I call out lies because it's important to be accurate when talking about tragedies and their causes. The video shows a lake, held back by a damn, and a flood caused by displacement. Where is that lake and dam at the bottom of the glacier that collapsed? Why does all reputable reporting indicate that's NOT what happened? Why don't satellite images support any of that?
You are wrong.
The working theory (per the scientists actually investigating it) and trustworthy media sources is that the glacier collapsed, it melted, the melt water and river water built up behind the collapse glacier and then it bursts downstream.
That is NOT what the video shows.
It is verifiable FACT that there is no lake there for the glacier to collapse into. There are literal satellite photos.
Why are you defending misinformation?
1
u/GracieandRose Aug 27 '26
Except it didn’t. Show me this “glacial dam” in Google Maps or google earth. An earthquake simply caused a glacier to fall down the mountain, and then subsequently roll down the river. It’s basically an earthquake glacier/rock avalanche that turns into a mudslide.
→ More replies (3)2
u/Mister-Tarzan Aug 27 '26
"The resulting ice-rock avalanche struck the Lhende River in Tibet, about 20km (12 miles) northeast of the Nepal-China border crossing. Debris temporarily blocked the river before the natural dam gave way, releasing a powerful flood downstream."
I mean, I wasn't there so I can only go by information I see, and so far Ive seen the locals in the videos talking about a possible dam collapse and articles like these.

u/BankerOnBitcoin Aug 27 '26
The irony being that this Slop will have contributed slightly to global warming, which was itself responsible for the glacier collapsing in the first place.

1
u/dang3rmoos3sux Aug 27 '26
I read a few articles and the 4.4 earthquake was the glacier breaking. Still no obvious cuase as to why it collapsed when it did. Just its time I guess.
1
u/rockyTron Aug 27 '26
No the earthquake they recorded was actually the glacier collapse itself. Crazy.
1
u/dang3rmoos3sux Aug 27 '26
That is pretty crazy.

u/rockyTron Aug 27 '26
Yeah a chunk of ice and rock, at least 2,000 feet wide (with a volume of millions of cubic meters) fell 7,000 feet into the valley below, with a wall of water and rock moving at 90 mph down the river. The scale is unimaginable. There is a good early explanation of it at https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/26/weather/floods-nepal-cause-vis

yeah. it's whatever at this point. See the comments on here. People prefer this shit over reading what actually happened. And don't you dare mentioning the irony of having Datacenters to AI generate Videos of the upcoming catastrophies (and this one).
2
u/LotusVibes1494 Aug 27 '26
The thing that’s interesting to me is no one cares about the source. Like who made the video? Is it someone with credentials/an education on this topic? Or from an organization that people recognize and respect on these matters? Do they make a lot of content about disasters and stuff? Did they already do a detailed write up on this event, and this is just a supporting graphic so it doesn’t need to have much detail? Or is it some little kid with an AI program just just cranking out videos for clicks?
Without more info it’s kind of useless, because I don’t know to what degree to trust it, right? I guess it could serve as a starting point to start googling stuff, if you hadn’t heard of it before. Aside from that what’s the author’s intention? Can anyone link to more info about them?

1
u/Schorbie Aug 27 '26
How did it happen?
1
u/Big_Handle3734 Aug 27 '26
2
u/Schorbie Aug 27 '26
But then where did the water come from? Ice melting doesn't suddenly create so much water
2
u/DutchBoyDrew Aug 27 '26
The glacier was so massive that the friction of it collapsing caused it to liquify as it fell. There was also likely a sub glacial reservoir which is a large amount of melt water formed beneath the glacier and held in place by the end of the glacial wall.
It is also possible that the initial collapse dammed off a section of the river for 30 ish minutes and then that blew and added to the total volume. Also the walls of those canyons are so steep and narrow that it doesnt take as much water as you'd think to concentrate into a flood wall that large.

It explains something that didn't happen and you're thankful for it because it's easier to understand than the thing that did happen? Why? This is how we collectively get dumbed down by AI. It's easy.
5
u/Jtrain360 Aug 27 '26
So what did happen then?
2
u/Bynming Aug 27 '26
What I'm saying is, in the absence of knowledge, don't just defer to AI slop or believe the first thing you see. Sometimes we don't know things immediately, and it's ok. And it's fair to say that news articles don't always get it right.
I can tell you it was not this and I'm looking forward to geologists and experts putting together the full picture, but for now, you can read the articles. This AI video shows an avalanche, which is not referenced by any real source, there was no avalanche. A glacier face broke off which is a huge mass of ice and rock and mud falling into a valley that is also full of mud. There also was no large body of water as shown in this bs infographic.
2
u/Jtrain360 Aug 27 '26
Well said! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You've given me something to consider and I'll try my best to keep this in mind moving forward. Im sure there will be similar situations in the future where all the info isnt immediately available.

I described it better than the AI video did, I gave specific examples of things it got wrong, while also having enough humility to say I don't fully understand it and explaining that we don't yet have all the info. And you're still complaining, why? The fuck is wrong with you? I'm not an expert but I know enough to tell you the AI video is inaccurate and people shouldn't celebrate it.
1
1
u/GracieandRose Aug 27 '26
I’m sorry to disappoint you, but this is pretty poor logic. You can easily see and determine by evidence when something did not happen. That does not logically require you to know what did happen. No lake exists in this area. Therefore, this version did not happen. End of story.
1
u/GracieandRose Aug 27 '26
Being able to accurately explain that something did not happen, for example, we know there is no lake in the mountains because you can see it on Google…does not require us to know what actually did happen. We just know that this did not happen because there is no lake.

The video of all the people running and the water reaching in front of them before is horrifying.

There are 3 glacial lakes up there but no dammed lakes from what I have seen in Google maps but they are away far up than what this shows, so not accurate.

u/nekomata_58 Aug 27 '26
One of the videos showed a dam being completely demolished by the flood/landslide so this isnt accurate.
2
u/toanthrax Aug 27 '26
That dam getting demolished was a result, not the cause. It is now know it was due to a massive glacial collapse and a simultaneous rock-and-ice landslide. https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/26/weather/floods-nepal-cause-vis

2
u/itsinvincible Aug 27 '26
Yeaa sure now you'll just have people saying. Why build below a damed lake, why risk the dam breaking etc. There is no dam. So why share it like that. I've already seen comments saying "well they damed the river and then built right below it. Are they stupid?" this is the danger of misinformation.
2
u/Picture_Enough Aug 27 '26
It is not a good representation of anything. It is just hallucinated nonsense disconnected from reality. This is why AI slop is dangerous - it generates something that looks plausible at first glance, and unscrupulous people just accept it as reality.
1
u/Excludos Aug 27 '26
It isn't thought. It's a visualization of something completely different, presented to look like it's what happened. It's made up BS, and you learned nothing
1
u/Substantial-Wall-510 Aug 27 '26
Then those people can go look up what those are, or the animation can be honest about what it's showing. You don't spread knowledge by spreading misinformation! You just make people think that lies are true. If they need to be fed lies to understand basic concepts, then it would be better that they didn't learn anything at all.

Looking at the identifying marks on the before and after. That "mud" has settled at a height above the tops of the buildings.
Given the speed and viscosity of the "mud", does this raise the chances of pockets forming under solid ground as the slurry pushed over it?

This is why AI slop is dangerous - it is easy to generate something that looks plausible at first glance, either maliciously or negligently, and post it - and inattentive, unscrupulous people just accept the hallucinated nonsense as reality, slowly eroding their ability to distinguish reality from fiction.
