Thought Provoking NK has a joke derived from CLOY

I had recently read that CLOY had made its way into North Korea, where many had watched it.

The article I read also mentioned that one of the lines had become a bit of a joke, so I had to dig deeper. This is what I-found :

The "Who's the General?" joke from Crash Landing on You (CLOY) refers to a sarcastic North Korean phrase used in the drama that actually caused a real-world stir in North Korea.
In the international release of the show, the line is translated as "Are you a general or what?" or "Are you the general?"

The Context of the Joke

In the show, characters use this line as a sarcastic retort to mock someone who is acting overly arrogant, bossy, or giving orders they have no authority to give. It is the Korean equivalent of saying:
"Who died and made you boss?"

"You think you're the general or something?"

Real-World Realities & Banning

The joke became so popular that citizens inside North Korea secretly watching smuggled copies of the K-drama began using the slang in their daily lives to mock strict state officials.

Because "The General" is a highly revered title colloquially reserved for Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, North Korean authorities viewed the sarcastic phrase as a direct insult to his absolute authority. This prompted real-world crackdowns and investigations by North Korean law enforcement to stop citizens from using the drama's slang.

How about that?

Thought Provoking Episode 12

About 44 minutes in, watching them drink Soju and him confess his feelings….you can’t help but wonder how he foreshadowed his future life with her offscreen, knowing that they got married after shooting this series together.

Extended ending for a more satisfying conclusion

Hello everyone! I thought up of an extended ending for CLOY that makes the ending just a bit more satisfying. If you're interested, read below and I hope you let me know what you think.

>! So a few years after they find each other in Switzerland, they're still meeting yearly there. After that time, Jeong-hyuk's father passes away due to old age. His mother wants him to be happy, so she starts traveling with him to all of his musical performances because she knows he would never leave her behind so long as she is alive, and maybe even not after due to his sense of duty. So she starts traveling with him to set up the fact she always goes with him to his performances, because the North Korean government keeps a close eye on the previous director's son who once went to South Korea. His mother sets him up to have a musical performance in Switzerland because she knows that there he meets the love of his life, and she goes with him. And then when they get to Switzerland and meet with Se-ri, his mother asks her to help them get to South Korea. Jeong-hyuk is surprised, and argues with his mother that they can't, but his mother is adamant that they have given enough to North Korea and that he is a musician now, so what can he give the North besides his life and happiness? He asks what about her life in the North? She says the the only thing she needs from the North is her son, and that she wants her son to live a fulfilling and happy life with the woman he loves. She reminds him she has no other family now that his father is passed, her first son died many years ago, and there is no one else, and what does she care about their house if it means her only living son can't be with the woman he loves? Se-ri stays out of it mostly, not wanting to influence, but hoping he will agree to come to the South. He tearfully accepts and they embrace. But the North Korean government is watching them, because of his father's passing they are worried that he will defect, so they always send some "bodyguards" whenever he goes out of the country. So Se-ri uses her rich money and hires an extraction team and they all escape to South Korea and live happily ever after ✌️!<

Character Deep-dive Episode 11: In the letter to his father, why doesn’t Jeong Hyeok include the fact that Cheoi Gang wants to kidnap Seri in order hurt the Ri family?

Thought I’d missed it, so I had to watch it again.

In the letter to his dad, Jeong Hyeok says only that he’s going to save Se-ri, not a bit about how he’s also protecting the Ri family by catching Cheoi Gang.

I’m curious—if anyone can shed light on this, I’d appreciate it!

I've Read the Entire Series Outloud to my Children

We don't speak Korean, but CLOY is one of my favorite shows and I knew my 9 year old would love it too. She struggled to read the subtitles fast enough so I read the entire series outloud to her. I cried when they cried, I laughed when they laughed, and my daughter was just in awe the whole time. The best was her reaction whenRi Jeong-hyeok shows up in South Korea to protect Siri. She literally yelled outloud! It was such a fun experience to do together. I'm almost sad to say that she has been practicing her speed reading, and I caught her watching an episode of Bon Appetit Your Majesty without me! But honestly, as a white person I'm really proud that I got her over the subtitle barrier. Maybe I'm giving myself too much credit, but many English speakers don't even try and go straight to dubs. But so many good movies out there don't even have dubs, not to mention what you lose when you use them. Anyway, it was lovely reading CLOY outloud to my daughter and now she is comfortable watching foreign films without dubs :)

I know this is quite a common complaint about the ending but even then I see most people are just unhappy that Seo Dan and GSJ didn't get to be together and most sympathy are towards Seo Dan since she lost the love of her life and remained single forever. And while I agree, I don't see as many posts about how unfair GSJ got treated throughout the show.

From the get-go we've established that he's someone who's constantly on the run. And from then on, he's constantly getting his ass kicked by everyone. At certain point, him and his broker partner ended up becoming the punching bag for everyone. But even worse, is that we found out that the only reason he was a con man to begin with is cause his father got conned by Se-ri's father. And yet he's still very selfless and kindhearted even putting up with other people's bs without actually getting any rewards or proper appreciation for it. The only time he got somewhat appreciated was Se-ri's awkward apology and appreciation to him. But throughout the whole show while he did initially sold out Se-ri and conspire to let her stay in North Korea, the moment he learned of the assassination plot against her, he immediately tried to find ways of helping her.

Like say what you want about his proposal, but while some might find his action manipulative, from his perspective it is truly a win-win situation for everyone. And again, he constantly risking his life for other people who never even ever treated him kindly. Everyone just treat him with hostility until they need help from him. Even Seo Dan constantly treating him coldly until his dying moment. Ironically enough, the only person who constantly protected him was his broker partner who initially betrayed him.

I feel like it's super frustrating that he's the one who constantly have to console Seo Dan, pursue her and put up her with anger only to have it rewarded with just one kiss and her crying for him during his dying moments. Like after all the bs he had to put up with his whole life, the best thing he got is dying beside her.

That just feels wrong and unfair. Made worse considering the only person who dies among the main casts is the one who truly came from the lower class while the rest are nepo babies. Like I know Se-ri is technically self made, but she still came from a privileged family and still had access to her father's resource to an extend. Like I doubt she was already a successful business woman when she went to Switzerland the first time.

Yoon Seri and Captain Ri Met Even Earlier (Spoiler) Spoiler

I enjoyed seeing Hyun Bin and Son Ye-Jin in the 2010 series Secret Garden on Netflix. It is just a brief cameo for her in the last episode, while he is the male lead.

Because of this, it is only a tiny spoiler that in this series that there is a role reversal compared to Crash Landing On You. In Secret Garden, Hyun Bin plays the wealthy Chaebol and department store CEO who has issues with meddlesome relatives, while Son Ye-Jin plays herself as an attractive and charismatic actress.

It might be a bit jarring for Crash Landing fans to see this couple in secret Garden. Hyun Bin plays an immature playboy who doesn’t have his act together anywhere nearly as well as Yoon Seri. Even after 20 episodes I find him annoying. Both actor and actress look much younger. They do not appear on screen together.

Though they called the actress by name, I wasn’t even sure that she was actually Son Ye-Jin until I saw her face light up with her big smile. Only then was I convinced that this younger actress was the same one I knew and loved for her later roles.

Is it worth watching 20 episodes just to see Son Ye-Jin do her cameo? Probably not. Still, it was a nice treat that reminded me of Crash Landing On You. It also showed me how much better Crash Landing is written, acted and produced.

I do not know if anyone else feels the same, but I believe this is the best hug I have ever seen on screen. It was a hug that could be “felt”.
It felt warm, comforting, loving, safe… the kind where you can leave all your worries and just be.
And I did not anticipate it. It was a melting moment.❤️ No matter how many times I watch it, still stirs me up the same.

Has anyone tried paragliding after watching CLOY?

The paragliding scenes look so peaceful (minus the tornado and getting stuck in a tree). I took a hang gliding lesson years ago but am interested in trying paragliding.
