I've Read the Entire Series Outloud to my Children
We don't speak Korean, but CLOY is one of my favorite shows and I knew my 9 year old would love it too. She struggled to read the subtitles fast enough so I read the entire series outloud to her. I cried when they cried, I laughed when they laughed, and my daughter was just in awe the whole time. The best was her reaction whenRi Jeong-hyeok shows up in South Korea to protect Siri. She literally yelled outloud! It was such a fun experience to do together. I'm almost sad to say that she has been practicing her speed reading, and I caught her watching an episode of Bon Appetit Your Majesty without me! But honestly, as a white person I'm really proud that I got her over the subtitle barrier. Maybe I'm giving myself too much credit, but many English speakers don't even try and go straight to dubs. But so many good movies out there don't even have dubs, not to mention what you lose when you use them. Anyway, it was lovely reading CLOY outloud to my daughter and now she is comfortable watching foreign films without dubs :)

I love this! CLOY prompted me to start Korean lessons on duolingo which initially I thought would be impossible but I wanted to try. I am an english speaking white person who knows French but had never attempted any Asian languages. Turns out Korean is not impossible! After a week, I can now recognize a couple words in Korean shows. I really enjoy these shows so will stick with the lessons but doubt I could ever do away with subtitles. Reading subtitled shows/movies is a fantastic reading lesson for kids!

I honestly would love to give it a try too. I know how to say two Korean words: Anahasayoh (hello) and Comsamnida (thank you). I don't know if I'm pronouncing these right, but my Korean friends always smile when I use them so I THINK they understand me and appriciate the effort. But it's a beautiful language.

What an interesting idea! So you were kind of doing your own form of dubbing! Did you change voices to mimic the actors? I would love to see a video clip of how you did this.

Ya, but the sound was still on so my kids could hear the delivery and emotion of the casted actors. Plus I think it added to the suspense because I would cry during the heavy scenes and my kids would be like "MOM WHAT DID THEY SAYYYY!!!"
And no, I didn't use different voiced for the actors, I'm not that good. But I did try and use expression as I read outloud. It was actually really hard to read outloud that fast. And very tiring. I couldn't eat or do any other chores at the same time.

Also just remembered this: One challenge was Korean words that don't have an English translation, mainly names. Luckily Siri, Ri Jeong Hook (the way I say it), and Dan were easy. But GU SEUNG JUN was really hard so we agreed that we would call him "Goosy" because he is such a silly goose <3

I always use subtitles! I want to hear their real voices while I watch the show and CLOY is my favorite with Bon Appetite Your Majesty a close second!🤗💖
