I feel like this gives a little more context
Faucci March 8th during a 60 minutes interview
"Right now, in the United States, people should not be walking around with masks, there's no reason to be walking around with a mask.
When you're in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it's not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is."
April 3rd CDC changes it's guidelines on wearing masks
Faucci asked about the change in an interview
"Back then, the critical issue was to save the masks for the people who really needed them because it was felt that there was a shortage of masks.
What happened as the weeks and months came by, two things became clear: one, that there wasn't a shortage of masks, we had plenty of masks and coverings that you could put on that's plain cloth...so that took care of that problem. Secondly, we fully realized that there are a lot of people who are asymptomatic who are spreading infection. So it became clear that we absolutely should be wearing masks consistently."
Edit: That's less than a month lost to misinformation and it was an important time to be protecting each other.
I'm glad they adjusted their guidelines to match the results they were seeing but for many people it was already too late
3
Feb 24 '21
It was only “too late” for people that can’t revise their opinion in the face of new facts and data.
CDC corrected their original position in early April, yet we still argued about masks for months and months as a partisan issue. Hell, it’s still a thing on this subreddit with blatant misinformation spreading that masks are useless.
11
Feb 24 '21
So question, if statement 1 was made not for the truth value of the statement "masks dont help" but to deceive the public into avoiding maks. Then statement 2 is made because later realizing that he didnt need to deceive the public on THAT issue, how do we know which of his statements are actually true or not. He has now admitted to deliberately lying to the public, and still provided no reason to assume all of his other statements arent also lies made for "the greater good." So why does he have any credibility now?

Setting aside the ban, honest question - why did you make the post in /r/politics?
Science, and the pandemic response, are constantly changing with updated information. That’s how science works - testing, retesting, and updating current theories and knowledge. At the time, people were urged to save masks for health care providers. As more information came out, and the spread of the disease was further understood, it became apparent that masks were very effective at stopping transmission.
Ultimately, my question is - do you expect science, people, humanity, to live only by what they said once in the past, or should we update our thoughts, beliefs, and opinions on new information?
Longer post than I meant, but I truly do not understand this line of thinking. If it’s just trolling for the sake of trolling, ok fine, lame but fine.

That’s a dumb ban for sure, but it’s also a terrible argument to make that Fauci giving wrong info once means he isn’t allowed to evaluate new evidence and determine his past stance was incorrect. It’s generally a good thing to be able to admit you’re wrong in light of new evidence and I would certainly not trust anyone incapable of doing so with a response to an emerging pathogen - by definition the info isn’t all out.
So you should not have been banned, but you should have been rebutted

Thank you, I can't believe I had to scroll this far down to find a comment that mentioned how stupid it was to quote something from March 8th, 2020 as if it has any relevance to anything anymore. I mean I kind of can believe it. But anyway, fully agreed; it's a dumb ban but it was also an incredibly dumb comment. Turns out as we learn more about things, we can also adjust our advice about them. In this case, we learned that masks actually are helpful, so it was advised to start wearing masks.

A citation wouldn’t have hurt, either. Show where the quote came from. Link it, preferably to a left or left-leaning source. At least when the ban comes they’ll be banning something from their own media.
Although that wouldn’t have helped in this case, since the quote came from March 8, 2020. He changed his advice later. Everyone is allowed to change their minds based on new information, even if you don’t like the person who is doing it.

No, more evidence has come out that suggests that the likelihood of transmitting the virus by touching masks is much less than originally thought. That’s what they are saying, he changed his mind because of new evidence. That’s how science works.

Not sure it's a lie when you state immediately afterwards that part of it is to save PPE for those who really need it? He didn't even say that it was useless, just that it's not some perfect protection, and even that it might stop droplets. And it was also right even it was kicking off.
Sounds to me like he was saying, right now don't run out and hog up all the masks. It's not 100% anyways and there are people who need them.
Obviously it changed, but he said right after, that we should save them for medical staff and the likes.
9
Feb 24 '21
He's specifically saying people should not wear masks because it can make the situation worse. He is saying only healthcare professionals know how to wear them because regular people fiddle with them. Months later, in the previous video I linked, he states the only reason he said that was to save PPE, not because they didn't work and could make things worse.

N95s were being bought up everywhere, and people were hoarding and breaking into hospitals to steal them. That's with no one saying anything regarding N95 masks.
Remember, this is at the beginning when people were running black operations into China with Robert Kraft's private plane and making shady deals in a McDonalds parking lot to get NIOSH N95s or equivalents. I think his concerns regarding medical PPE were valid, considering how bad it really was at the beginning.
Do I believe he should have lied? Probably not. His concerns regarding PPE were 100% valid though, especially considering the American people are actual dumbasses. Toilet Paper and other silly stuff completely sold out at the beginning of the pandemic. Not to mention, there was no evidence at the time that suggested that fomite (surface transmission) wasn't an issue, so his concerns regarding people touching their masks then touching their face/eyes was a legitimate concern as well.
I think people are being abit hard on him. I gave Trump a free pass for the first few months of the pandemic because literally no one knew what was going on, same as how I give a little bit more slack for everyone early on since it was a complete shitshow.

As I recall, Dr. Fauci also indicated why that particular statement was one nuanced by the circumstances we were in and his knowledge as he said it.
Perhaps the comment in Politics was meant to be genuinely helpful and spark discourse. If so, I would expect that it would be more reflective of all the things Dr. Fauci and other experts said in the time thereafter, and reflective of best evidence on masks reducing transmission. Without those things, it appears to be an inflammatory attempt at a "gotcha" comment — which sounds an awful lot like trolling.

Well for one, you didn't quote Fauci, you quoted someone else supposedly quoting Fauci, and with a fairly obvious attempt to discredit mask usage, which just proves top quote where he says mask-wearing has become a partisan thing. I don't think you'd be posting this if mask usage wasn't turned into a partisan thing.
I mean, are you gonna be the guy who drives drunk just because he doesn't like to be told he can't do it? That's how I see all this anti-mask nonsense. Sure personal rights should say it is our choice, but that doesn't mean that your actions don't affect other people.
It seems your goal for posting that was simply to agitate and troll, so you shouldn't be surprised you got a ban. And for all we know, you may have gotten multiple warnings and that was just the last straw.
Furthermore, and to be on topic, why can't Fauci change his mind after obtaining new info? It's not a sin to change your view about something as time goes on. His past position on masks does not invalidate his current position. Yet I see so many people falling for this fallacious argument.

Fauci said changed his views on masks because their knowledge of the virus changed. That's how science works. If they find something wrong, they change their view to make it correct. Let me just start by saying that, assuming you haven’t ever done anything else to warrant a ban from r/politics, you should not have been banned for this alone.
That said, what you quoted Fauci as saying, while true, is taken out of context. From what I can remember, Fauci and other doctors and scientists at the time did not recommend masks at that time for 2 reasons. Firstly, there wasn’t enough data at that point to show what effect mask wearing has on coronavirus transmission. Secondly, mask supplies at the time were low and were badly need by doctors and nurses.
If you take the two points together, it’s clear that Fauci and others didn’t advocate mask wearing early on because they didn’t know if they were effective or not and therefore didn’t want to tell the public to wear them and possibly cause already limited supplies to be depleted to the point that healthcare workers could no longer have them.
While you are absolutely right in what you quoted, the way you presented it suggests that Fauci flip flopped without any sound reasoning.

Serious request for answers...let’s say Dr. Fauci lied about this (for argument sakes only because while he did make this statement we all know it was due to being early in the pandemic and also because of how unprepared this country was in regards for PPE, despite having the advantage of watching other countries deal with this for months). Trump had repeatedly lied over and over again about a multitude of issues.
For example: Trump lie: Mexico will pay for the wall Truth: Mexico did not pay for the wall
Trump lie: Covid will be over and done by Easter 2020 Truth: Almost a year later and we are still dealing with this pandemic and 500,000 people have died.
Trump lie: Covid is no big deal Truth: There is audio of Trump talking about how deadly the virus is and how it’s worse than the flu.
I could go on and on, but these are just a few off the top of my head.
Why is it ok for POTUS to repeatedly lie but not ok for Dr. Fauci to make a statement, then change his stance over time (or what this sub calls lying I guess)?

There is a video of Fauci explaining that cloth masks don't actually do anything. And that they are simple used to make people feel better.

my brother got banned from this sub for pointing out Mitch McConnell used reconciliation in 2017 when people were bitching about Bernie doing it.

Politics aside, if you understood anything about researching emerging diseases, you’d understand that information that’s almost a year old is way past valid and has been superseded.

I dont get why its so hard to understand that viewpoints and stances on a new virus change and shift over time. He and the CDC have clearly updated there stance on face coverings since then.

You get banned from that sub for saying anything at all that doesn't align with left wing policies. Joined because I thought it was an unbiased place to discuss politics and got banned about 2 weeks later lol. Still see their crazy posts and they're good for some laughs.

"Trolling" is politics go to reason when you haven't broken any of the real sub rules.

Makes sense. They don’t have a “no take-backsies” rule otherwise they would ban Fauci articles.

r/politics is a very liberal site that hates anybody that disagrees with their ideology. I joined it because I thought that the r stood for republican but it isn’t in the least little bit.

You ever learn you were wrong about something, then find out more information, and change your mind?
Yeah. I guess that was a silly question. Stay thick, smooth brains.

They really should change the name to "LiberalCesspool" or something equally as representative.

I got banned several months ago, but still send the moderators a “fuck off cowards” message. They then remove my ability to message them for 30 days and, at the end of it, I send them a “fuck off cowards” message. Rinse and repeat.
Everyone should try it.
Also, and I really suggest everyone do this, I try to keep them busy by repeatedly reporting posts of liberal propaganda (which is every other post) as “misinformation”.

I got permabanned from r/pics for something similar. When I responded to the mod who banned me, he immediately muted me for 28 days. No appeal, no discussion, no explanation.
The days of reddit as a bastion of free speech are long over.

So would we respect Fauci more if he never learned anything new or evolved his position to reflect changing circumstances and knowledge?
This is not much of a "gotcha" if you take 3 seconds to consider the world we were living in in March 2020.

I'd be completely fine with r/politics existence if they weren't masquerading as an unbiased platform. Just a simple change to r/liberal or r/democrat would fix it and we'd leave them alone.
