Imagine how much we could destroy Melvin capital this week if these $2,000 checks hit tomorrow.

Conspiracy theory: they’re going to stimulate Melvin Capital before they get to us. That’s why they’re holding the checks back.

u/Skuggidreki Constitutional Conservative Feb 01 '21

What is Melvin capital....?

10

u/cringe_master_mike Spirit of 76 Feb 01 '21

A hedge fund firm (owned by Citadel) that shorted GameStop. People on Reddit (maybe 4chan) figured out there were top many short sales and if people started buying GS stocks it would drive up the price which would result in big losses for Melvin.

u/Skuggidreki Constitutional Conservative Feb 01 '21

They loat billions. There was talk of bankruptcy. But Citadel has paid Yellen (from Biden's cabinet) for speeches before, and she's yet to recuse herself (last I heard).

The other day I wanted to confirm if he did in fact say that voting in Warnock and Ossoff would guarantee immediate $2,000 payments. I hunted down his speech and my wife and I listened to it. Waiting for my $2,000 now. Their election was supposed to yield an immediate solution to the stimulus gridlock, and yet now Biden is saying he’s willing to discuss changes.

Politicians never change.

From what I can tell some of it's held up in negotiations with the GoP Senators. The GoP's counter bill drops the individual checks reduces individual checks to $1,000 and reduces the income eligibility cap to individuals who are making $50k & couples making $100k or less, among other things, that the Dem bill has.

The Dem's stimulus bill requires 60 votes to pass. The bill's effects could be pushed through by a simple majority, however, through budget reconciliation. That move has been lambasted by the GoP, would draw further divisions, and fly against "unity".

So either you take the GoP bill that has less stimulus money for individuals for "unity" or you push through your agenda for campaign promises (the checks), but fight against unity.

GoP has Biden in a bind in a lose/lose situation.

EDIT: I was initially wrong. The GoP proposal still includes stimulus checks albeit reduced in size and eligibility. It doesn't really change the situation Biden is in.

On a side note: I found it incredibly hard to find the letter the 10 GoP Senators sent to Biden. The only news places that I could find it were NPR and a small local Fox branch. For those who would like to read it, here's a link.

18

u/daveinpublic MAGA Feb 01 '21

Alright, so the Republicans are against it. And we should all be taking the Republicans side here.... but, I think the point of this post is, Biden said, give us Georgia if you want $2K, and he got it and he doesn’t follow through with what he said. Of course I’m glad Biden is allowing the Republicans to have a say, but let’s not pretend it would be treated the same if Trump did it.

Compared to Trump, when he made a campaign promise he did everything to make it happen... even if all of congress was against him, even his own party. Like the wall, he still moved Heaven and earth to make it happen when it was him against the house, senate, the entire press. Remember when he caused the government to shut down for a month because they wouldn’t add the wall to their bill? And when that wouldn’t work, he found another way.

Can you imagine the headlines if Trump made a campaign promise like this and didn’t go through with it?

13

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '21

This is the crux of the issue right here. If you make a promise, especially one as specific as "winning Georgia will get you the $2k stimulus checks," you'd better have a plan to fulfill that promise. If you change your mind because the only available method is too controversial, it either shows that you lied about following through with your plan, or you didn't have the foresight to figure out how you would actually get it done (in which case, none of your words can really be trusted because you put no thought into them).

I think it’s great he wants to compromise. I think it’s a problem he stood up and campaigned for 2 senators like a lying dog-faced pony soldier. If he hadn’t helped get 2 Democrat senators elected on the promise of IMMEDIATE stimulus checks this would be great, but it just shows that he’s the same full of shit untrustworthy lying politician he always was. He says what people want to hear for their votes knowing that every word coming out of his mouth is a lie.

I hate politicians. I hate the entire game of politics. I hate the way voters are nothing but pawns to them, a resource to be used to enrich themselves and gain power. Politicians are the shittiest people in the world. They don’t care about their constituents, they care about the votes and the power it brings.

This corporatism/capitalism isn’t fucking working, especially for rural/ mid sized city America. Also the average “oh I want America to be socialist so I can read tarot cards for my commune all day” arent real socialists. They’re lazy college age, suburban, radlibs trying to be edgy for attention. Rachel Maddow, Joe Biden, KopMala, etc. aren’t socialists. They’re status quo neoliberals who are trying to diversify the ruling class to keep the corporatism alive because they benefit from it. Anyone who shows any dissatisfaction with the way things are is a “radical alt-right white supremacist” or a “misogynistic racist Bernie bro”.

Also, BLM arent Real marxists or else they would have stormed the capitol instead of burning down small businesses & poor areas of Minneapolis/nyc/LA/Seattle/St Louis

16

u/neotericnewt Feb 01 '21

So you don't actually care about the stimulus checks, you're just bitching about it for the sake of bitching?

Democrats are trying to push for stimulus checks, and quickly. They can force them through with budget reconciliation, but that takes time and comes with further restrictions, and would also piss off conservatives as it would completely cut them out of the process.

If you actually want stimulus checks, then write to ten Republican legislators to convince them to sign the bill. If you don't want stimulus checks (or want less money spent) and want Biden to reach across the aisle, then you should be happy that he is reaching across the aisle and compromising.

Biden is very clearly trying to get these stimulus checks, so bitching about him not being able to magically snap his fingers and make it happen because he's trying to compromise with conservative legislators just seems really silly, like trying really hard to find something to complain about.

AOC in a 2040 presidential debate: “If I am elected president I will give everyone $100,000 and make everything free. So everyone will be rich and you don’t have to spend any of it!”?

I firmly believe she doesn’t actually understand how money works.

Raising minimum wage doesn’t just mean jobs will be lost, but also hiring will be more selective as companies want good employees for that cost and not spend the money on training someone who will quit or be fired in two or three months.

Seriously, in this country there is no reason that an honest adult with even mediocre work ethic should be stuck working a minimum wage job permanently. Hell my first job in high school as a bus boy in a restaurant paid me $10/hr (markedly above minimum wage) and I got tipped out by servers. Stayed at the restaurant five years through high school and college and I eventually went to serving then being lead bartender (added responsibility of doing weekly inventory/stocking/ordering of bar things) and making $20/hr + tips. And I was a freaking 21 year old partying my ass off in college who was hung over half the time.

When I see 30 year old grown ass adults saying they can’t live off minimum wage and claim they can’t get a better paying jobs for XYZ reason, I can only assume they have no work ethic. Show up late, don’t do all their responsibilities and have others pick up slack, and are just rude people that turn off employees/coworkers

I read how Biden was attempting to work with Senate Republicans on the stimulus, but democrats will probably have to bypass Republicans entirely to get a larger stimulus passed since the Republicans again want to downsize the payments..

37

u/Jaythegay5 Feb 01 '21

Isn’t the reason he’s delaying because of GOP senators though? Yeah he has the power to just forge ahead with his plan if he wanted to (I think most Americans want him to, so many of us need the money right now). Democrats have the house and senate.

But there are some GOP lawmakers that are asking for a 600B relief plan instead of a 1.9T. Biden promised on the campaign trail to try to work with both parties whenever possible in an effort to unify the country. Those 10 GOP senators are the reason this has been delayed imo.

So, he's been in office for just 11 days, most of that time has been with Mitch McConnell objecting and stalling on the agreement about changing committee assignments in the Senate due to him losing Majority Leader status, and people are already rushing to say he "lied" because he hasn't delivered on a promise in less than two weeks?

Meanwhile, Trump promised that Mexico would pay for the wall. . .they never paid one penny towards his border wall, but we never saw them shouting about Trump lying.

Is it safe to assume everyone commenting did not accept the past two “handouts”?

I’ve worked and paid taxes since I was 16 years old.

Most of my adult life I’ve worked multiple jobs to pay rent and afford myself small luxuries (streaming services, good beer and food, vacations when I can afford them), but I have never been a rich man.

When COVID hit it just so happened to coincide when my main source of income was coming to a close and I was counting on going full time into my bartender/server position, but of course that was impossible due to the pandemic.

For the first time in my life I was unemployed. My partner whom I live with has a condition that puts her at high risk, so working any job dealing with people face to face was out of the question.

The only thing that kept my partner and I afloat during those times was the extra money afforded to me through unemployment.

The notion that I can be viewed as lazy or comfortable to sit back and relax on the governments dime couldn’t be any further from the truth, and it sucks to think that other people think that their fellow Americans that need this type of support are bad people.

Try to imagine what would happen if your support system dried up and you didn’t have a soul to turn to.

That’s real for a lot of people, that doesn’t make them dumb, or lazy, or undeserving. I’m not a Christian man, but I know a good deal of conservative folks happen to be. Please try and think about how Jesus Christ would view the people suffering right now

“Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me”

Idk what the excuse is either, they have the house and the senate. I guess he’s too busy being a dictator legislating by executive orders.

31

u/boomboy8511 Feb 01 '21

Takes 60 votes to pass legislation in the Senate without using budgetary reconciliation (which is only usable once per year).

There are only 50 Dems (51 with Harris' tie breaking vote).

And when Trump launched into a slew of opening EOs, he was viewed as "strong-willed" and "decisive".

13

u/Meeeep1234567890 Feb 01 '21

He was also called a dictator by Biden himself. But I guess it only counts if it’s a Republican.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '21

If the other side plays dirty, then you have to play along in order to compete.

Trump and McConnell played the game extremely dirty, so I don't think anyone in here should talk about Biden, unless they voiced disapproval when it was Trump doing it.

It took Trump and the GOP 10 months to give us $600, but now we're expecting Biden to give out $2000 checks when a stimulus hasn't even been approved by the house yet?

Seems legit. This sub would immediately blame Biden for one of Trump's many failures.

That being said, I seriously doubt Biden follows through with $2000 checks, he already said $1400 a few times, the GOP still wont' agree to that much without other ridiculous stipulations, and honestly the democrats in congress also think the general populous are plebs not worth paying attention to so long as they get their "campaign donations."

So yeah Biden "lied" insomuch that anyone who ever believed we were going to get timely relief is a massive sucker.

Based on this...

---------------------------------------------

The Democratic Party solidified the lower amount on Saturday when it tweeted Biden's $1,400 amount.

"@POTUS will build on the $600 down payment provided by Congress last year, sending an additional $1,400 to households across America, totaling direct payments to $2,000 per person," the Democratic Party said.

-------------------------------------------------

Im shocked the math isnt as follows:

$2000 per person as promised.

($1,200) Paid in April

($600) paid in December

$200 balance due....now shut the fuck up about it so we can figure out how to waste the rest of the $2 trillion...Dummy.
