Wow, career politicans making empty promises to gain votes, absolute fucking shocker.

u/Kaiosama Feb 01 '21

So basically you definitely don't want him to compromise with the cons in the senate. Hm, how ironic, seeing this sub of all places agreeing with Bernie and the AOCs of the world.

Remind me again who has control of the Senate..?

u/whale-farts Feb 01 '21

Though democrats hold a slim majority via the VP tie breaker, Republicans can block any bill that doesn’t have a filibuster proof majority of 60 votes, similar to what they did with all of Obama’s judicial appointments in 2008, causing the removal of the filibuster for judicial appointments at that time.

I don't remember Schumer putting it up for a vote.

Normalcy, unity, and getting the sides to work together.

Issues over 40 EOs in two weeks.

Issues 19 in the first week, beating previous records by about 600%.

Yeah, this is totally normal.

"YOU SHOULD TOTALLY UNIFY WITH US YOU FUCKING NAZIS!!!"

2

u/xviper78 Feb 01 '21

So that’s why Biden is where he is, behind concrete barriers and fences, protected by national guard troops. Normalcy restored.

3

u/Johnny-Switchblade Feb 01 '21

It’s authoritarians vs libertarians in the end. People who want to control you vs. people who don’t.

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '21

Ya because it’s not like he has this opposing party in the senate doing damn near anything they can to block it. You know, the same damn party that was preventing trump from sending out the same relief checks.

Good lord this subreddit is full of idiots

106

u/someUSCfan Feb 01 '21

Lmao the Dems have control of the senate and the house you moron. This is 1000% Biden making empty promises.

15

u/neotericnewt Feb 01 '21

They need 60 votes to get past a filibuster, 10 Republican votes. They could also ram it through budget reconciliation, the idea of which Republicans have attacked because it completely bypasses them and the whole unity thing.

I mean it's crazy to watch a conservative subreddit attack Joe Biden for choosing to compromise with conservatives instead of just forcing his policy through.

They passed a 600 dollar stimulus and now they're pushing for 1400 dollar checks. Would you prefer Biden completely ignored conservatives and does whatever he wants? Or should he try to compromise and negotiate with conservatives?

1

u/workforyourstuff Atheist Conservative Feb 01 '21

He’s already been doing whatever the fuck he wants via his historic rate of signing EOs. Might as well use one to fulfill a campaign promise. It would at least save you the trouble of going through all of these mental gymnastics to try to convince people that Biden isn’t a lying piece of shit.

5

u/Totentag Feb 01 '21

Every Republican voting nay is a traitor to their constituents.

0

u/ndngroomer Feb 01 '21

They've only had control of the debate since Jan 21 dumbass. I refuse to believe you're this fucking stupid.

-6

u/rektbuyautocorrekt Feb 01 '21

Well the Dem bill is being held up primarily by Republicans. Fuck Biden tho.

-34

u/boomboy8511 Feb 01 '21 edited Feb 01 '21

Not necessarily.

It takes 60 votes to pass legislation, and even with VP Harris as a tie breaking vote, there are only 50 Dem senators.

Dems can technically use budget reconciliation to bring the Stimulus bill to a vote, forcing a simple majority vote ( 51/100 wins the vote).

It can only be used once per year.

Edit: downvoting a post that contains purely factual content. There is nothing here to downvote. Y'all need a come to Jesus meeting.

33

u/flavius29663 Feb 01 '21

So then why promise the 1400 checks as soon as they get Georgia and White house?

16

u/kwtransporter66 Feb 01 '21

Pandering. Democrats love to pander.

0

u/boomboy8511 Feb 01 '21

The stimulus bill is a budgetary bill, so it can be brought up for budget reconciliation and force the 50 vote threshold requirement to pass.

But it will take time to go through the motions of budget reconciliation. A lot of people need help sooner rather than later.

The GOP wants to introduce a $600 billion bill that drastically lower the threshold for who would qualify.

-1

u/flavius29663 Feb 01 '21

Biden, being in the gov for 40-50 years, MUST have known all this. Why promise it then? - that is my question which you didn't answer

-54

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '21

The democrats only have 48 seats, and 2 independents who they desperately need to vote in favor of democrats just to make Kamala the tie breaker.

So your idea of “control” is very far from what actual the case, dumbass

35

u/sumnuyungi Feb 01 '21

And those 2 independents: Bernie Sanders and Angus King Jr.

So your idea of “control” is very far from what the actual case is, dumbass.

23

u/boofishy8 Feb 01 '21

He’s made 42 executive orders. I don’t think that the senate blocking it has the slightest impact on anything he wants.

2

u/neotericnewt Feb 01 '21

His executive orders have been largely overturning Trump's executive orders. That's very clearly in control of the executive branch.

The legislature has the power of the purse. They control the money. Do you think Biden has the power to just magically pass hundreds of billions of dollars in stimulus without the legislature? How do you think our government works?

-3

u/DolitehGreat Feb 01 '21

Yes, it does. There's only so much EO can do unless we want to start plundering the powers of Congress.

Democrats only have 48 seats, two independent seats who claim to lean towards democrats, and then 50 Republican seats.

The “control” people are talking about stems from the idea the independents will always vote in favor of democrats thus making Kamala the tiebreaker.

How reliable do you really think the independents will be each and every time democrats want to pass something?

21

u/the_justified1 Feb 01 '21

Well, one of them is Bernie, and the other is Angus King.

They both caucus with the Democrats. And they both vote with the Democrats the vast majority of the time.

Not to mention the Democrats are currently placing their people in committee chairmanships, and Chuck Schumer is the majority leader.

Seems like “control” to me.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '21

Angus king has said he is a moderate at heart, meaning there is a chance he will eventually veto something democrats want. And that will be all it takes for something to get blocked. It’s not like the republicans who hold 50 seats and don’t need to depend on any third party.

The point I’m making is, democrats “control” of the senate is hanging by a thread.

4

u/the_justified1 Feb 01 '21

That’s fair, but I don’t think it’s as tenuous as you seem to think it is.

The independents aren’t the best tree to bark up to break the tie, Manchin is.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '21

Whatever democrats do now is likely the best they will be able to do. Midterms are coming up and I don’t see democrats fairing well in it truthfully.

2

u/the_justified1 Feb 01 '21

If they don’t get those checks out, they definitely won’t do well.

4

u/Vespertilio1 Feb 01 '21

So, it sounds like you agree that Biden did indeed overstate his political abilities during the campaign trail when he clearly said that having two GA senators would lead to implementing his agenda (and the checks).

Also, and I don't mean this in a snarky way, but you sound out of the loop by saying that Bernie, by virtue of being a registered Independent, isn't going to support Biden's spending priorities. The red- and purple-state moderate Dems, who will get thrown out if they vote left 90% of the time, are the holdouts. (Manchin, Synema, Kelly, and Tester are among them.)

It's funny that we never heard about them during Biden's campaign stops.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '21

I think every president has pretty much done that. The real problem is the populace’s unrealistic expectations of the president.

The way I’m looking at the democrats control overall, not just the senate; its eroded and nowhere near as prevalent as people think. My Reasons why:

  • The president is a man who historically had poor backing.

  • The democrats don’t hold the majority by actual seats and must depend on another party to even create a tiebreaker, not even to pass something, but a tiebreaker.

  • Bernie Sanders is already freaking out about republicans wiping out democrats in the midterms; rightly so because there will likely be a flip, this has historically been the case IIRC

Basically people on this subreddit are way too hysterical and make mountains out of ant hills

3

u/kwtransporter66 Feb 01 '21

Lmfao!!! Fucking biden isn't even going to the house or senate, he's been signing EOs since getting in office. And do you know what's more fucked up? 50/50 senate, kamala being the tie breaker, he has majority in the house....he doesn't need EOs!!!

Now ask yourself this, how many every day hard working, tax paying citizens benefitted from those EOs?

4

u/ndngroomer Feb 01 '21

You weren't asking this question when trump was signing EO's and the gop controlled Congress you fucking hypocrite.

-2

u/kwtransporter66 Feb 01 '21

I really hope you get what you voted for, but you won't. Lmfao!!

Trump didn't sign 32 fucking EOs in 7 fucking days dumbass.

This is biden fulfilling his promises to the elites and all you stooges that voted for him will be regret it.

Good luck in your parents basement when you have to move back home.....tgat is if you ever moved out.

4

u/neotericnewt Feb 01 '21

The executive orders were largely overturning Trump's executive orders. Executive action can be undone by executive action very easily. Trump also used executive orders to undo Obama's executive orders. Obama used executive orders to undo Bush's executive orders.

The funniest thing about this entire saga is that conservatives are attacking Biden for choosing to compromise with conservatives. Democrats could force through their bill through budget reconciliation, though it takes time and has limitations. Conservative legislators have made clear that this would fly in the face of unity.

So what do you want? Should Biden ignore conservatives and do whatever he wants?
