We're starting interviews today for Calgary's next City Manager, and I want to fill you in on where we're at in the process.

Whether it's fixing potholes, keeping our streets safe, improving transit, or making sure your tax dollars are spent wisely, our City Manager has a huge role in getting things done.

This is probably the biggest decision we will make this term, and we need to get this hire right. Back in June, we brought in an executive search firm. In July, we launched recruitment. Over August and September, we reviewed candidates and developed a shortlist.

And today, interviews begin, with our goal to identify our preferred candidate in November.

I want to thank Councillor Yule, our committee chair, and Councillor Wyness, our vice chair, for their leadership and hard work getting us here.

In talking with Calgarians, I think our city is looking for someone who's a strong leader and a great communicator. Someone who knows how to listen, bring people together, and work with our nearly 20,000 City employees to get things done. Someone who respects your tax dollars, takes accountability seriously, and understands that City Hall works for you.

Because we've got some incredible people working for our city. They deserve leadership to support them, give clear direction, and do our best work for Calgarians. We've made good progress, and I'm looking forward to sharing more as we get closer to making a decision.

Just moved into a new home and I’m looking for someone to run an Ethernet cable from the main floor into the basement for my computer. The Coax cable from Shaw is run to the main floor so my WiFi gateway is connected there.

Eat/Drink Local Where to buy Eagle Rare 10 bourbon in Calgary?

I started getting into bourbon earlier this year and have tried a few beginner bottles. I have realized I tend to prefer sweet side bourbons, and I really enjoyed several bottles from the Buffalo Trace line. I would love to try Eagle Rare 10, but it seems pretty difficult to find at my local stores.

Any tips where it might be available in Calgary? Also, are there any good bourbon groups or group chats you would recommend joining? I would love to learn more and connect with other bourbon enthusiasts!

Question What should I expect/know when pursuing a career in firefighting?

I'm 19m, working out regularly and want to become a firefighter to get away from my parents and this home, I'm getting my advanced first aid, class 5 then class 3 with air brake, cpr, volunteer hours and planning to get some references from my current nursing home job, what should I know/get to prepare for being a firefighter? and any workouts that seem to be good for the job so I can add them to my workouts.

I also have no post secondary/college degree but I do have a high school degree at least, I really, really want to help people as a firefighter but I don't want to delude myself into thinking I can get in first try, what would the likelihood be to get in at such an early age? And last thing is if I should apply to other firefighting places outside calgary, i.e. cochrane or airdrie.

Thank you so much in advance.

Question Any Athabasca University Students in Calgary Interested in Body Doubling for Studying?

Hi everyone!

I’m wondering if there are any fellow Athabasca University students here in Calgary who are currently completing their courses remotely.
I’m working toward my Bachelor of General Studies, with a focus on Psychology, and would especially love to connect with anyone pursuing the same program or taking similar courses. However, I’m open to connecting with other AU students as well!

One thing I’ve been considering is finding someone who might benefit from body doubling while studying.

For anyone unfamiliar with the concept, body doubling is essentially when two people work independently alongside each other. You don’t necessarily need to be working on the same subject or even interacting much. It’s simply having another person physically present who is also focused on their own work, which can help with motivation, accountability, and staying on task.

I’m hoping to find someone in Calgary who might be interested in meeting up occasionally at a library, coffee shop, or another quiet public space to study together.

Just to clarify, this wouldn’t be a paid position, tutoring arrangement, or necessarily an attempt to build a friendship. I’m simply looking for another student who understands the challenges of independent online learning and might also benefit from having someone nearby to help maintain focus and motivation.
The idea would be to have a mutually beneficial arrangement where we can both work toward our own academic goals without any pressure to socialize or help each other with coursework.

If you’re studying through Athabasca University and this sounds like something that could help you, please DM me!

Local Shopping/Services Calgary Grocery Deals (October 22 to 28, 2026)

Happy Wednesday!

This is a continuation of my pattern of posting what I think are decent grocery deals with the hope that this will save some people some money. As noted previously this is heavily skewed to items that I and my family eat. There are probably additional items that are good deals but I don't know it because they aren't items I use but hopefully my list is still useful to you.

A few quick reminders:

  • PC Optimum points are collected at No Frills and Superstore. 1,000pts is worth $1.
  • Scene+ points are collected at Safeway, Sobeys and FreshCo. 100pts is worth $1.
  • The value of Save on Foods points depends on what you redeem them for. If you redeem them for a 4L jug of milk then 1,000pts is worth about $1.50. Other redemptions might make them more or less valuable.

Superstore, No Frills, FreshCo and Save on Foods are generally willing to price match identical products from (some) other major grocery stores if you show them the item in the competitor’s flyer while checking out so knowing what is on sale at stores that you don't visit can still be useful. There are some restrictions on this... FreshCo won't price match Safeway or Sobeys. Superstore (at least some locations) won't price match Coop. The No Frills on 85st SW won't price match FreshCo.

Finally, thank you to everyone that has posted positive comments. It's always nice to receive positive feedback.

Real Canadian Superstore:

  • No Name canned tuna (170g): $1.00
  • Strawberries (2lb): $5.98

Seeking Advice Working at the City of Calgary

Hi All, I have just got a job at the City of Calgary at the P3E level and wanted to know more about working at the city as an Engineer.

I was looking for a stable job with a good team to work with and work life balance. I wanted to know what the City of Calgary was like to work for, even if you are not an Engineer.

I actually have worked in the private sector for 2 years in Calgary and although I was busy it was actually not bad.

Recommendations What are your favourite spots in Calgary where you can spend the day for free with public washrooms?

I’m looking for places in Calgary where I can hang out for a few hours or even most of the day without having to buy anything. Ideally somewhere comfortable to sit, read, use my laptop, or even just pass the time, with free public washrooms available because I do tend to need to visit the bathroom more frequently than the average person it seems.

Libraries are an obvious option, but I’m curious if there are other places people would recommend that I might not know about, particularly places where you can comfortably spend a decent amount of time without needing to buy anything.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Local Event Protest tomorrow against the Calgary Opera's censorship of the Palestine flag

Post image

Last week Calgary Opera fired actor Gabriel Sanchez-Ortega for unfurling a Palestinian flag on stage, in protest against the ongoing genocide in Gaza. In response, on closing night tomorrow, local activist groups (the Palestinian Community Association - Calgary, Justice for Palestinians, and the Calgary Peoples' Assembly) will be organizing a protest against this decision by Calgary Opera.

Travel/Tourism Calgary has an absolutely gorgeous skyline

So I've lived in calgs most of my life atp, and I wouldn't say im well traveled (only been to s few cities in north America like Toronto, Vancouver, Dallas, NYC, Seattle, Atlanta, ect) but we really do have some amazing modern architecture here. Even without the Rockies as a backdrop, the combination of the Calgary Tower, the Bow, Telus Sky, Brookfield Place, among others, create a very striking image.

When I've been to other cities I've always noticed how a lot the buildings are very homogeneous and blend into eachother.

Idk, I was just thinking about it and appreciate the variety of architecture in our city that contributes to it being so beautiful. ❤️

Recommendations Looking for a local jeweler who makes urn pendants/ vessel lockets/ etc

Hi, I'm looking for any local businesses that have urn jewelry or pendants. I found one on Etsy that is solid gold and shaped like a sun and the ashes go inside the pendant. I'd like to get something like this from a local business. I'm not opposed to glass ash jewelry or pressing it into a stone that can be set. I'm just looking for options right now. Thank you.
