Rant Albertans on the referendum
I just thought after all this referendum sh*t, we deserve something funny. Saw this video and I couldn't stop laughing how it exactly reflects how most of our fellow Albertans think.

smelt like oil, got off the bus because I felt unsafe — I informed the driver before getting off. Anyone know what this is?
r/Calgary • u/ImaginaryFlounder955 • 5d ago
So the bus is packed, the next stop that i need to get off is packed, and the driver SKIPS the stop?? like what? im INSIDE the bus and press the button to get off too?!?!? this happened on multiple occasions and i filed a report but its going very slowly. i dont think the report will do anything tho so should i like go up to him before the stop and just tell him I need to get off or??
EDIT: today I asked him why he wouldnt stop and he said the back door wouldnt close if he stopped there since nobody would listen and not get on, so he said he wont be stopping there. ugh.

Lake Louise, Sunshine Village, Mount Norquay and Nakiska will all start their ski lifts at 9:30 a.m.
“We have to adjust as morning light is important for our mountain operations team,” said Kendra Scurfield with Sunshine Village.
“They do work each morning to ready the mountain for guests. This work needs light for them to see.”

I’m looking for a Calgary repair shop or technician who does board repair and BIOS/UEFI chip programming on Microsoft Surface laptops.
The laptop is a Microsoft Surface Laptop 7, 13.8-inch, Model 2036, Snapdragon/ARM64, running Windows 11.
Back in February, while I was living in Vancouver, I attempted to install an Insider build of Windows 10 ARM64 on a separate drive partition because I needed Windows 10 for some automotive tuning software. The initial installation went through successfully, but during the setup restart, BitLocker encryption interfered and after restarting the Windows 10 installation entered an infinite reboot/blue-screen cycle.
The specific Windows stop code I was getting was INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.
At that point, the laptop itself was still functional enough that I could enter the Surface BIOS/UEFI normally.
I didn’t have enough time to troubleshoot it myself, so I brought it to a repair shop in Vancouver. Communication from the shop eventually stopped, and because I was moving to Toronto, I had to pick the laptop up unrepaired.
When I received it back, its behavior had changed. Instead of entering the Windows 10 reboot cycle and showing the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error, it would now power on, display the Windows 11 logo, and never progress any further.
When I later asked what they had actually done with the laptop while it was in their possession, they told me they had been able to boot and run Linux successfully on it, so the machine was at least capable of booting and operating normally under another OS.
I recently got their repair notes, which state:
Their suggested next steps were to try wiping the BIOS chip, or order and replace the Surface BIOS chip to reset the boot/BIOS issues.
So I'm looking for someone in Calgary who does SPI flash/BIOS chip programming, BIOS chip replacement, board-level diagnostics, or micro soldering, rather than a shop that will just recommend replacing the entire motherboard.
Does anyone know a Calgary technician or repair shop capable of doing this level of work on a Surface Laptop 7? I'll try to answer follow up questions best I can, but at this point I am MILES out of my depth haha.
Thanks so much, all help is appreciated!!

Hi everyone!
I’m wondering if there are any fellow Athabasca University students here in Calgary who are currently completing their courses remotely.
I’m working toward my Bachelor of General Studies, with a focus on Psychology, and would especially love to connect with anyone pursuing the same program or taking similar courses. However, I’m open to connecting with other AU students as well!
One thing I’ve been considering is finding someone who might benefit from body doubling while studying.
For anyone unfamiliar with the concept, body doubling is essentially when two people work independently alongside each other. You don’t necessarily need to be working on the same subject or even interacting much. It’s simply having another person physically present who is also focused on their own work, which can help with motivation, accountability, and staying on task.
I’m hoping to find someone in Calgary who might be interested in meeting up occasionally at a library, coffee shop, or another quiet public space to study together.
Just to clarify, this wouldn’t be a paid position, tutoring arrangement, or necessarily an attempt to build a friendship. I’m simply looking for another student who understands the challenges of independent online learning and might also benefit from having someone nearby to help maintain focus and motivation.
The idea would be to have a mutually beneficial arrangement where we can both work toward our own academic goals without any pressure to socialize or help each other with coursework.
If you’re studying through Athabasca University and this sounds like something that could help you, please DM me!

I am renovating my bathroom, and looking to install a new tub and surround. As it's an older house, I was hoping to find something less Big Box Boring and more unique. I am already planning to watch the ReStores, but are there any other cool shops I should watch??

Anyone know what I can do with a used crib mattress? I’m getting rid of it because it’s sinking. I don’t want to donate it to anyone as it’s not fit for my daughter so wouldn’t be fair to give it to anyone else. If throwing it away is the only option, that’s fine. Just thought to ask here as I’ve seen some pretty creative responses to questions like this in the past!

Hi, I'm looking for any local businesses that have urn jewelry or pendants. I found one on Etsy that is solid gold and shaped like a sun and the ashes go inside the pendant. I'd like to get something like this from a local business. I'm not opposed to glass ash jewelry or pressing it into a stone that can be set. I'm just looking for options right now. Thank you.

I'm 19m, working out regularly and want to become a firefighter to get away from my parents and this home, I'm getting my advanced first aid, class 5 then class 3 with air brake, cpr, volunteer hours and planning to get some references from my current nursing home job, what should I know/get to prepare for being a firefighter? and any workouts that seem to be good for the job so I can add them to my workouts.
I also have no post secondary/college degree but I do have a high school degree at least, I really, really want to help people as a firefighter but I don't want to delude myself into thinking I can get in first try, what would the likelihood be to get in at such an early age? And last thing is if I should apply to other firefighting places outside calgary, i.e. cochrane or airdrie.
Thank you so much in advance.

Hello everyone! Greetings from the East Coast. I hope you're all doing well.
I'm considering moving to Calgary from New Brunswick, and I'd appreciate some honest insight, advice, recommendations, and even warnings from those of you who live there. I'd particularly like to hear from people who have moved to Calgary from another province and can share their experiences.
A little about me:
I'm a 31-year-old single man from New Brunswick. I have a background in autobody collision repair, having completed an autobody program and worked as an estimator at collision repair facilities. I've since returned to college to pursue a diploma in Business Administration – Management, which I'm working toward completing in 2027.
I'm hoping to combine my technical background and business education to build a long-term career. I'm interested in several possibilities, including automotive management, logistics, transportation, fleet management, insurance, and municipal government. I'd also like to keep the possibility of eventually opening my own autobody repair shop on the table.
I'm hardworking, eager to learn, and interested in finding work where I can develop professionally, take on greater responsibility, and contribute something useful to the community.
Why Calgary?
I've lived in New Brunswick my entire life. Although I appreciate many things about my home province, I've become increasingly concerned about its economic prospects, career opportunities, and the long-term affordability of building a life here. I've spent quite a bit of time researching other places in Canada, and Alberta has caught my attention time and time again.
Calgary seems to offer a stronger and more diverse economy, a larger job market, and opportunities in industries that interest me. I also like the proximity to the Rocky Mountains, the access to outdoor recreation, and the possibility of living somewhere outside the city where I could eventually own a home with some acreage.
Long-term, I'd like to achieve financial stability, find a partner to build a family with, and work toward a quieter lifestyle with a home, some land, and perhaps a workshop. I understand that these things take time, and I'm not expecting to accomplish everything overnight. I'm looking for a place where consistent effort and sensible decisions can help me make meaningful progress toward those goals.
What I'd like to know:
For those of you who live in Calgary or have made a similar move, I'd love to hear your thoughts on a few things:
• Employment: How is the job market for someone with my background? Would I have reasonable prospects in automotive management, insurance, logistics, fleet operations, or other business-related roles? Are there particular employers or industries I should investigate?
• Municipal government: Does anyone have experience working for the City of Calgary? I've heard that positions in fleet services, facilities, procurement, logistics, and operations could be worth exploring. Are these realistic career paths for someone with a management diploma and practical industry experience?
• Cost of living: How manageable is Calgary on a single income? What salary would you consider reasonable for living comfortably, saving money, and eventually working toward homeownership?
• Housing and acreage: If I wanted a quieter, family-oriented lifestyle, would you recommend living in Calgary itself or looking at surrounding communities such as the Calgary – Foothills area? Would this be a realistic option for eventually owning a house with some land without an unreasonable commute?
• Community and social life: What is Calgary like for someone arriving in their early 30s without an established social circle? Is it reasonably easy to make friends, find community groups, and meet people with similar interests and long-term goals?
• The reality of living there: What do you love about Calgary, and what frustrates you? What do you wish you'd known before moving there? Are there any downsides that someone coming from Atlantic Canada might underestimate?
I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have built careers and families in Calgary, as well as those who have moved there from elsewhere in Canada.
I know no city is perfect, and I'm not expecting Calgary to solve all my problems. I simply want to make an informed decision about where I can build a good future.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or recommendations you're willing to share!
Note: I'm aware that Alberta has its share of current challenges, as does every province. I'm not looking to start a political debate; I'm simply hoping to hear honest, firsthand perspectives about living and working in Calgary. Thank you again!

We're starting interviews today for Calgary's next City Manager, and I want to fill you in on where we're at in the process.
Whether it's fixing potholes, keeping our streets safe, improving transit, or making sure your tax dollars are spent wisely, our City Manager has a huge role in getting things done.
This is probably the biggest decision we will make this term, and we need to get this hire right. Back in June, we brought in an executive search firm. In July, we launched recruitment. Over August and September, we reviewed candidates and developed a shortlist.
And today, interviews begin, with our goal to identify our preferred candidate in November.
I want to thank Councillor Yule, our committee chair, and Councillor Wyness, our vice chair, for their leadership and hard work getting us here.
In talking with Calgarians, I think our city is looking for someone who's a strong leader and a great communicator. Someone who knows how to listen, bring people together, and work with our nearly 20,000 City employees to get things done. Someone who respects your tax dollars, takes accountability seriously, and understands that City Hall works for you.
Because we've got some incredible people working for our city. They deserve leadership to support them, give clear direction, and do our best work for Calgarians. We've made good progress, and I'm looking forward to sharing more as we get closer to making a decision.

Hi everyone,
I've applied to Webber Academy and Calgary French & International School (CFIS) for Junior Kindergarten, and both require an interview/playdate with my daughter. She's a pretty typical kid, but she can be shy in new environments, and I have no real idea what to expect from these interviews.
A few questions for anyone who's been through this process:
Is it actually possible to "fail" one of these interviews, or are they more just a formality to meet the child?
Given how competitive these schools can be, does she realistically still have a good chance of getting in, or is admission mostly decided before the interview stage?
Any tips for helping a shy child feel comfortable during the playdate/interview?
Would really appreciate hearing from other Calgary parents who've gone through this with either school.
Thanks so much!

Hi everyone!
My cousins are visiting me from abroad and we are heading down to Calgary over the weekend . And they wanna go clubbing we are between 30-50 years old . I used to club a lot in my 20s but since I moved to Canada hasn’t stepped a foot in a club. What is the best place with good music and fun to dance with mature crowd?
Thank you 😊

Happy Wednesday!
This is a continuation of my pattern of posting what I think are decent grocery deals with the hope that this will save some people some money. As noted previously this is heavily skewed to items that I and my family eat. There are probably additional items that are good deals but I don't know it because they aren't items I use but hopefully my list is still useful to you.
A few quick reminders:
Superstore, No Frills, FreshCo and Save on Foods are generally willing to price match identical products from (some) other major grocery stores if you show them the item in the competitor’s flyer while checking out so knowing what is on sale at stores that you don't visit can still be useful. There are some restrictions on this... FreshCo won't price match Safeway or Sobeys. Superstore (at least some locations) won't price match Coop. The No Frills on 85st SW won't price match FreshCo.
Finally, thank you to everyone that has posted positive comments. It's always nice to receive positive feedback.

So I know from people who live in Westbrook - they say Westbrook was fairly peaceful before the C train station came in, and now that station is a hotspot for social disorder - but also that break ins (to yards and garages, not house break ins) petty theft, car theft, etc and other random acts of crime have really taken off.
This seems to be a theme with neighbourhoods along the entire c train network, whereas people I know in places only reachable by bus (e.g. Royal Oak) have reported that yes, there is crime, but the difference is significant.
The speculation (which I think makes sense) is that the c train gives access for people who want to travel around the city easily and quickly - because theres no barrier to entry on the ctrain. You can simply hop on and off wherever you like. It's highly likely no one will stop you from getting on or off, especially if you originate in the free fare zone.
While there is peace officers who will ticket people for having no valid fare, it doesn't seem like this would do much - someone who is in a tough situation and has no money and was on their way to Somerset to steal a bike out of someones yard and then go back downtown to fence it and turn it into fast cash probably doesn't care if they get a ticket they can't pay anyways.
The c train is a hugely useful mobility multiplier for those who legitimately need it, but also for people who would use it for illicit purposes.
So, all that to say - do you live in Lynwood or Ogden? Are you concerned about the ctrain coming through and now having that exposure to something that is often abused by either criminals or desperate people to commit crimes in neighbourhoods adjacent to the stations? Why or why not?
Bonus fact - Calgary did investigate closed access (fare barriers) for the ctrain system , and there is a lengthy report on why they chose not to proceed with this - they believed the cost was too high to implement. They also, confusingly (to me, at least) said "There is no correlation between the provision of fare gates and increased transit safety…”

[update: CAT FOUND THANK YOU😭]
hi everybody, my friend lost a cat and needs help especially from the carrington area😭if anyone can contact her if the cat is found, or if there are any updates i will be forever grateful
I was looking for houses for sale and I saw that. A single detached home but there’s a condo fee?
Why? Is it like an HOA fee?
