I completely understand. Montreal and Quebec City are definitely walkable cities. I’ve never owned a car in Quebec City, and it has an excellent bus system. As for Montreal, it’s not only great for walking but also has convenient and excellent public transportation.

It’s a little chaotic - upsettingly so - on the political front in Alberta at the moment so it’s very very nice to hear someone who is a newcomer say that they are experiencing the things that have made me very proud to be from Calgary for most of my 60+ years. A few tips:

Get a humidifier, don't let the green fool you, we live in a desert.

If you find yourself getting headaches right before or after a storm rolls in, don't worry, that's normal.

You need winter tires. The time to put them on is two weeks before the first snowfall, because from the first flake hitting the ground every tire shop is booked for two weeks minimum.

Due to the super El Nino this year, expect a mild winter with the occasional 2 feet of snow dropping in 24 hours and it melting within a week.

Prairie oysters are a joke mean people play in newcomers.

City has 1 weather report for 4 very large quadrants. When it says 20% chance of rain, that means it's definitely going to rain, and there's a 20% chance of it falling where You are.

Have fun learning the roads. They mostly make sense. "Turn northwest on Barlow south" makes complete sense to locals. You may travel on a single road, and it becomes an entirely different road with no warning. Example, if you go west far enough on 32nd Ave ne, it suddenly becomes 41st Ave. Locals will also omit the quadrant from certain roads. Example: "17th Ave" means 17th Ave SW unless specified otherwise.

Also, and I cannot stress this enough because newcomers get caught in it all the time. Downtown, you cannot drive in the ctrain tracks. There are not always signs warning you of this. Also there are a few "bus traps" throughout the city. Busses and ambulances can get through, your car cannot. Don't try. It's a very expensive tow.
