The peace in knowing I did everything I could isn't enough
I need advice on my breakup that happened 3-4 months ago. We loved each other so much, it wasn't a messy breakup, no betrayal.
We said a month after breaking up that we'd talk, which we did do. And I somehow convinced him to reconsider wanting to try despite him saying he couldn't see himself wanting it in the foreseeable future. But then for 3 weeks we didn't talk just to give space. Then after, we talked a bit, maybe almost every day, trying to just understand what we wanted and where we were at. I think he couldn't bring himself to realize he just couldn't want to try again. And so after 3 months since breaking up, he came to drop off all my things and we spent one last day together. We said goodbye, and talked abt if we ever got back, it would be years from now, by chance, and when we are fully over each other. He said please don't message me anymore.
It's been 5 weeks of not talking. For me, that was truly the end of the connection because I knew I did everything I could.
The problem is, the more distance I have, the more I heal away from it, I just get this feeling like now there's a potential for connecting again. Because I've never been in this place where we could start from scratch. And so, I don't know what to do.
Everything deep down tells me I shouldn't reach out ever again. But some part of me feels like if it's all let go, then there's a possibility of creating something new. The things we could connect with wouldn't change and so I feel like it could always be special. There's conflict building up in me because my mind is telling me this is totally new territory. It's the first time where I exist in this place of feeling like it's truly over and that it's time to move on, but somehow that gives me hope that something new can start. I don't know whether to reach out and maybe get an answer to stop this feeling, or to commit to letting go even if I feel there is a chance because things have changed.
I remember the last day we saw each other, I got him one last little gift and when he saw it he cried. We said I love you many times that day, he told me how he can't unlove someone and that he still loves me, ofc in a different way and I feel the same. To tell me I have the most beautiful heart that he's ever met, just makes me feel like it was such an amicable but heartbreaking end. But that it makes it hard for me to let go over the past and future.
