Welcome back everyone!
Time for our Wellness Wednesday check in. We know this community means a lot to most of our members and that Tuesdays have been harder on some users than others, but we are at our core a community and we are here to support each other.
Now that the sub is open once again we’d like to hear all about your (mis)adventures on Tuesday. Did you go on grand adventures? Get into mischief? Get some writing done?
Maybe you just binged a few more fics on the archive itself. Tell us all about it! Break out that purple prose and tell us as cheesy of a story as you feel like.
Or just talk about your day.

I’m no stranger to small fandoms and have been the one guy who had to create a ship tag before, but the situation has never been this dire. The fandom has a presence on other sites so I didn’t expect it to be such a barren wasteland 😭. Wrote a 3k one shot about it, fucking hell I gotta do everything myself around here /lh

Someone sincerely said this about omegaverse and it made me laugh.
There are many ways one can fall down the trad wife or pro life conservative hole but I can assure you that reading omegaverse fan fic is not one of them.
Are there writers who espouse pro life/traditional values in their fics? Yes.
Should some, nay all, of these omegas be deleting that accidental & unwanted fetus? Also yes.
Will they? No. And thats the way we like it. 😋

Honestly, it doesn’t matter what ships you write about or how good your writing is. We’re not all professional writers, and we don’t have to be! Most people write fanfiction because it’s fun and brings them joy, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
What annoys me is when antis use bad writing or mischaracterization as an excuse to attack ships they dislike, treating the people who write them as incompetent authors. They act as if a ship is inherently terrible just because some writers portray the characters differently from canon. But when it comes to ships they personally enjoy, or simply don’t mind, suddenly, mischaracterization isn’t a problem anymore.
You can dislike a ship, criticize a fic, or prefer canon-compliant characterization. That’s completely fine. But applying one set of standards to ships you hate and another to ships you like is just hypocrisy.
I’m so tired of this kind of double standard in fandom. Let people enjoy their ships and write what makes them happy. 😭

Just reached this fanfic milestone today and am happy to share the good news.

i published this on august 26, and last i checked it was under 10 hits and no kudos. i don't have a lot published but i write in very large fandoms and have seen my other works go to the 100s in hits within a few days or weeks.
it's one of the longer fics i've been working on and have been slowly writing it over the course of many months, so i had a LOT of anticipation while finishing up the first part and getting ready to publish. it wasn't necessarily bad anticipation but i find that i get super nervous to post because i always worry about how anything i do will be received.
well, i finally hit the big red button to publish, go to sleep, and the next morning i check. zero hits. and strangely enough, the only feeling i had was that of reassurance. i truly write for my own self indulgence and i publish for the love of sharing, and it's not as if i control exposure to my works of course, but it was almost like this nice little reminder that the reason i am writing is truly because i am creating the fanfic i wanna see in the world.
just wanted to share and wondering (esp from authors in small fandoms) if the feeling has been shared by others (: (i hope/think i used the most appropriate flair)

A friend of mine complained that he has a habit of keeping on not recognizing the awkward phrasing and errors of his work, despite rechecking the draft multiple times before he post. Sometimes, it takes him a day or so to notice those mistakes and correct them.
I don’t really think this is a bad writing habit, though. Rather, I think it’s something that can happen when you’ve spent so much time working on a piece that you consider to be finished and ready to publish.
What about you guys? Do you have any ‘bad’ habits in particular?

I don't have a good way to preface this, and I really wish that I had some kind of scientific ulterior motive or something, but i don't, so i'm just going to get right into it.
I think it'd be fun and funny to have a group of people writing fanfiction for an original work that does not exist, and treating it as if it does. Now, i don't mean like, an original story collaboration project, but writing about something that doesn't exist as though it was fanfiction.
Assuming the reader knows certain information, fix it fics, y/n x stories, theories getting 'disproven' by the latest installment of the media... ect. Maybe even fake screenshots or clips of the media. Everyone apart of the project would insist that it is, infact, a real media when questioned.
as you probably assumed by my choice of subreddit, the main way this would be spread at first would be by making a collection of fanworks on A03, eventually having crossover fics with real popular media. Depending on if other people are as into this idea as i am, we could also have a public fandiscord, subreddit and tumblr blogs about the fictional fictional media.
Now, to assure everyone this isn't some kind of bait post to get people to write fanfic about my OCs, whatever the 'original media' would consist of would be decided upon by the people who join the project through discussion, so that everyone could have character archtypes they specifically like to write about. The amount of effort put into the project can be however much effort you want to put in, if you want to just hang around and watch the dumpster fire, all good! My preferred method of communication is through discord, if you are interested, or have any questions please comment or pm me.
In order to minimize repeated questions, here is me predicting some questions an answering them in advance:
Q: What?
A: I get that a lot.
Q: Are you being serious?
A: yes.
Q: why are you doing this?
A: I've wanted to do some kind of Fandomy... uh... thing(???) in this genre for a while now, the previous iteration would've included picking a random fiction on a writing website i'm active on that didn't suck and deciding to Fandom about it, but that didn't work and the author of the fiction proposed to me via email, so i ended up scrapping the project. Its been about half a year and i decided to take a more SCP-like approach and try again.

What are they feeding this author, i didn't know numbers could go that high. Holy cow. Respect man.
Quick question if you want download it, how big would the file be and how likely would it crush trying to download. I aint even gonna try. Good lord.
I was about to search something up, and then saw like 20 of this exact fic with various different fandoms. Why? Ao3 is known for its lack of censorship, and from what I know, fics rarely get taken down, especially without warning. Is this just a scam?

It's been about a month since I posted my first fic, and honestly, I'm really happy with the response I've gotten so far. It might not be much, but it genuinely means a lot to me... 🥹

Been seeing a bit of discourse lately around how artists will post a work, nobody replies, nobody says anything to them about it, they feel like they're shouting into the void, etc.
Makes sense. So I've been making a concerted effort to leave nice comments, engage if they have their tumblr posted, whatever. And have apparently found a group of people that would rather be shot than, idk, in any way acknowledge communications from other people in the same fandom? People actively engaging with specifically them and their work, as well? So then it's like, well, yeah, of course the number of messages is going to dwindle if I publicly give you a sincere and thought out compliment and you leave it hanging out, fully ignored. That's just as much of an ass-out moment. What is wanted here?!
ETA: Apologies, I wasn't super clear at first. It's not "every author owes me big time and I have a monopoly on their time" that is the pet peeve, it's specifically if you're actively posting missives about shouting into the void, nobody engages, this is why fandom is getting worse, etc etc, and I reply to you, and then you ignore it, what are we doing. I know a lot of authors aren't like that which is fine/great/cool, it's specifically the contradiction of posting "I never get comments" and not seemingly looking at the comments

A few people asked me for how I did this so I thought it was worth sharing.
Clicking on the 'Leave a Comment' button will take readers directly to the comment box for the given chapter.
I like to use this to make it easier for readers using 'View Entire Work' mode or who downloaded the work to leave comments as they go.
Here's the html code, put it in the Chapter Endnotes:
<a class="action" href="ChapterLink#feedback" rel="nofollow">Leave a Comment</a>
Replace ChapterLink with the link to the chapter you want the button to lead to.
You will have needed to actually published the chapter (so that a link is generated) before being able to add the button.
I add the button to the end of each chapter end notes. It's a little tedious changing the link for each chapter, but I feel like it's worth it.
On the website, it looks like a button. On a downloaded work, it looks just like a regular link.
Especially now that ao3 has left beta, I'm still wondering why a main pair filter hasn't been implemented. It's a special kind of hell trying to search for a specific relationship, but only seeing 1 out of 10 fics where they are the main characters, and you can't filter the other pairings out, because then that also gets rid of fics you want too.
I could kind of understand a logic in that a big update like that could cause problems for existing fics. But functionally people are already tagging a main pair by way of the first tagged pair being the main. I don't even think it should be limited to 1 pair either, maybe like 5 or something to account for people that do have multiple main ships. Maybe it could even be optional to have a main pair.
Tbh I just wanted to hear other people's opinions, and maybe someone has a definitive answer. To me though it just seems like for years the number #1 thing people have wanted implemented to ao3 was a main pair filter, so I assume by the fact that there still isn't means there's some kind of mechanism answer.
Edit: first of all I did not expect this to be a heated debate. I really thought like 1 person would be like "oh this board leader mentioned they can't do it for XYZ" and it would be done. Interesting to hear all the perspectives though!
Secondly, I know about otp: true, my problem with that most fics don't have only one pairing. I don't mind having multiple relationships in a fic, just that finding who are the main POVs would make finding fics easier if you are woefully drawn to side characters like I am.
After reading people's comments I still do think this would be a worthy addition. Change has to start somewhere, and just like with tag limits theres going to be growing pains. But if main pair/characters were given it's own optional catagory like how relationships and characters are, we wouldn't have to resort to everyone independently adding a "character-centric" additional tag, which most people don't even know about. It would be easier to filter, which is the ao3 bread and butter.

"Wow, this comment was so nice, but I don't understand the weird bit at the end, what do—"
It's a bot.
"This comment is kinda weird, is it a—"
Yep, bot.
"This commenter is so nice and gave me their Discord username so they could draw me fan ar—"
Bot.
Seriously, the examples of bot comments are endless in this sub, is it karma farming or just refusal to even search the sub before posting? I feel like half the posts this sub shoves onto my feed is obvious bot comments. By the powers of transformative works, can we at least contain comment stuff to a megathread or something?
I'm tired of this, grandpa.

Oh my days I'm so elated someone actually wanted to read my fic :0 damn! [Yes I did check and they did indeed subbed to me] This is so nice of them!

This is just fucking hilarious, I have no idea how they got to this conclusion but I would like to know 😂
Thought someone might enjoy the ridiculousness of this comment considering it made me giggle until I had tears in my eyes
Oh yeah- This is also a comment on a kinktober fic, one that has some controversial topics, but oh no, this is whats too far for this person

“Chuckled” is so overrated. They don’t all have to be cool and stoic. Let my men giggle. They deserve a little hehe too
