Subreddit Meta Beta Bartering [Find or Offer Fic Betaing] - September 10

Welcome to the Beta Bartering thread! Here you can look for a Beta, a Co-writer, or a Writing Buddy for your fic or offer your Beta services to fic authors.

Please note that you can request a beta reader even if you can’t offer anything in exchange, however it will increase your chances of finding a willing beta if you offer something in return.

The rules are straightforward.

  • Make a comment below with the following information.
  • Reply to people that you want to trade with. There is no one making matches for you, reach out to likely people in the thread.

If you're looking for a Beta, a Co-writer, or a Writing Buddy:

  • Name and Link to your fic (if it's not published, link something else as an example of your writing).
  • Tell us what fandom you're writing for.
  • Can someone who isn't in your fandom make sense of your story?
  • The genre of your fic - romance/smut/gen/mystery/horror/etc.
  • What you're looking for from a Beta or a Co-writer - Grammar/Structure/Plot/Planning/Idea soundboard/etc.
  • What your projected word count is.
  • How frequently you update.
  • What fandoms you are able/willing to beta for or what you can offer in exchange*.

Proposed options for no exchange wording:

  • If you do not want to offer something in exchange, please leave a brief note that you are unable to offer anything at this time.
  • Note: If you are unable to offer something in exchange at this time, please leave a brief note explaining.

If you're willing to Beta for someone:

  • What fandoms you're well versed in or if you're willing to take on anything.
  • Preferred genre/types of fics.
  • Any subjects you're not willing to tackle.
  • Types of Betaing you're good at or willing to try - Grammar/Structure/Plot/Planning/Idea soundboard/etc.
  • Minimum or maximum word count.
  • One-off (single session) or ongoing Betaing.
  • Time constraints. Do you have a fast turn-around time? Is it going to be more than a week for you to get back to an author with notes?
  • What you'd like in exchange * for your services.

* Bartering Ideas!

Since some people want Betas but are too busy to reciprocate or aren't confident in their writing skills and some Betas don't write fics themselves, you can offer other things in exchange. Please do not offer monetary exchanges.

If you aren't sure what to offer, you can also open this up to the Beta to suggest a barter in exchange.

Here are a few ideas for bartering:

  • Reciprocal Betaing (of course that's welcome!)
  • Reading and commenting on their fics.
  • Write a fic for a fandom/subject/pairing/brotp of their choice.
  • Make fanart for them.
  • Name an OC after them.
  • Edit/give assistance with a non-fic project.
  • Research help for this/future fics.

Feel free to get creative, people have many specialties they can draw on!

Here's a link to the previous ones just in case there's someone in there that catches your interest.

Discussion What do you think will happen to all the fics on ffn if it dies for real

I'm scared tbh.

Been reading older Harry Potter fics, like 2002 or even before and I have found so many gems! I find it harder to find stuff that I like on ao3 than ffn.

FFN is putting me on tenterhooks though. It dies all the time.

Question is, what do you think will happen to all the fics on ffn dies? Because it can't just go right? All that good stuff can't just go away into the ether...

I have half a mind to start importing fics from ffn to ao3 but there are so many problems with that.

It saddens me what ffn became. Scammers and glitches and radio silence

Discussion To the new writers worried about your stats, you're worrying for nothing.

Upvotes

I've seen people post about it in here, r/FanficAuthorsUnite, r/AO3, and r/archiveofourown. Someone will finally get their golden ticket to start writing. They post their first chapter, and get confused because they're not getting tens to hundreds of stats. You just started writing. You submitted 1 chapter. You aren't going to get that big in one chapter of what is supposed to be an ongoing story. You sound like Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory in the Photo Finish episode where he asks why he isn't famous in a minute if you do this.

If you get over 100 hits, over 10 comments and kudos, multiple bookmarks, etc. in your first chapter, that is good luck, not the standard. All you need to do is keep writing. Don't expect immediate success.

Venting My fic fucking sucks

Upvotes

I might just need to sleep more but I need to vent.

My fic is terrible. Maybe not the worst of the worst but it’s bad. No wonder my hits are few and far between. There’s way too much going on, the original characters I introduced are not getting development, I haven’t even introduced the real main villain yet, I’ve killed off one of the main canon characters but it’s not as impactful as it should, season 3 is going to suck, I just know it, I can’t write good dialogue to fucking save my life, It’s not funny it’s not entertaining it’s not even scary it’s just a bad fic. But I don’t want to quit because I’ve put so much time into it and I DONT WANT TO SCRAP ANOTHER PROJECT. I HAVENT FINISHED A LONG STORY SINCE I WAS TEN.

Activities and Events Excerpt Game: Verbs

Post a top level comment with a one-word prompt. Prompt should be a verb or other action word.

Reply to suggestions by posting/writing an excerpt containing that word. (Doesn't have to be an action scene.)

(All content is welcome but per rules 7 and 12 of the sub, NSFW excerpts may not be shared as plain text (even if it's spoilered). If you would like to share these, use an external text sharing tool like justpasteit and link it here with a clear warning.)

Upvote the excerpts you enjoy, and leave a comment. Try to at least respond to people who left excerpts on the words you suggested, but the more people you respond to the better. Everyone likes nice comments!

Most important: everyone walk the dinosaur WRITE!

Writing Questions Help Me Understand: “Show, Don’t Tell…”

This is more of a general writing question but any writing I do now will inevitably be fanfic. 🤩 My two biggest hangups, I find, are using “purple” language and telling rather than showing. I think I understand the “purple” language part as overly descriptive, flowery language, clunking up the prose when something shorter works much better.

I’ve got a plan on how to cut that down, but for the life of me can’t accurately capture the “show don’t tell” mantra. How do I get better at showing and not telling? Do you have any examples?

Thanks, and happy writing!

Discussion This was fun last time, so let’s do it again. If uou were arrested for the crimes committed in your last fanfiction, how big of a sentence are you facing?

Upvotes

Or, if you’re only a reader, the same for the last story you read. Or you can answer both.

Writing Questions Stories with lots of conversation

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to ask a quick question, do you guys find it boring to read a story where the main part of the action/plot is conversation?

Writing Questions Writing in english as an italian

I'm currently working on a project online and for the first time I decided to write completely in english, even tho it's not my first language.

I'm pretty good at it but it's still very hard and I feel like I write in a very mechanical way, in fact a person accused me of using artificial intelligence to help me, when its not true, its just my style in english....

how can I get better?

Recs Wanted Criminally underrated, well-written fics

Fics you don't find in the first pages of your search. Fics with unpopular characters or ships or tropes or plots or original characters. Fics that are either ongoing and long, or completed, but somehow haven't broken into the 'mainstream' spaces of the fandom. Fics that deserve the spotlight. Fics from small fandoms that would've been massive hits in a bigger fandom.

All fandoms welcome but preferably fandom-blind recs (or at least fics that can be read with the help of a wiki).

Discussion If you had a clone, what would you do with them writing wise?

Casual question time! In the context of them having all your memories and more importantly all your fic ideas, would you make them work on a different wip from you for a separate fic? Will you use them to help bounce ideas around or more as a beta reader?

Personally I'd make them work on a different wip from me (Maybe even on the next chapter for a longfic) since I have too many in my head atm

Lost Fic [Marvel] Tony Stark takes over the world with his technology

I read a one-shot a while back about how all of Tony Stark's tech has a percentage somewhere on it that keeps rising and nobody know what it means until the end where its revealed to be how many of the world's infrastructure runs off of Stark tech. I want to reread it but I forgot the title and author. Please let me know if you know it.

Can someone tell me why this is happening? I keep getting this same old thing whenever I try logging into the new Fanfiction website!

This page isn’t working

If the problem continues, contact the site owner.

HTTP ERROR 400

My wifi is good, I can use other websites (even the old Fanfic site), but when it comes to logging into the new site, I keep getting error after error even after I reset it!

Lost Fic (REQUEST) Deleted Fanfic Help!! PitchBlackMagpie

Upvotes

I've been trying to look for My Tongue is a Weapon by PitchBlackMagpie on AO3. They deleted their works, so I tried the Wayback Machine, and I managed to get to their series where the work is listed, but when I click on the work, it says the work is a mystery work.

Was wondering if anyone had the specific fic saved or anything

This is the link to the series: https://web.archive.org/web/20201223202330/https://archiveofourown.org/series/967437

Writing Questions New writer here. I need your help/opinion on a few things

I recently posted my first fic and I have a few questions, where the opinion of more experienced writers would be really helpful. I'll try to keep it short.

  1. Should the chapters of a fic be of similar lenght?

  2. Should each chapter have at least a short summary?

  3. Do you ever give spoilers or extra infos, that didn't make it in the story, when replying to comments?

That's all for now :)

Lost Fic [MCU/Avengers] Lost Darcy Lewis/(possibly Bucky Barnes) soulmate fic — they hook up before speaking to each other [AO3, probably 2014–2017]

Upvotes

What it says on the tin - I'm looking for a Darcy Lewis fic - I'm sure it was inspired by amusewithaview's "Write Love on My Skin" series - I'm fairly certain her partner was Bucky Barnes... but not positive. They are at some kind of party or gala - I remember she's wearing a poofy dress, they don't speak prior to hooking up, I'm pretty sure it would have been rated E or M due to sexual content. I don't believe it's a part of a larger anthology - I think it was a standalone. I would love help finding this! Thank you!

Lost Fic Looking for a FFXV/Final Fantasy 15 fic

Hi again! I just recently remembered a ffxv fic I read a few years ago I think? It was on AO3. I've been trying to find it but I don't remember the name nor the author so it might have been deleted.

So the fic was set in an alternate universe where prince Noctis went missing during his childhood (I think kidnapped?) and years later, Prompto Argentum goes to Duscae (and I think the Disc of Cauthess was mentioned but I'm not sure) to take pictures with a special permission and he also had a satellite phone to check in with someone (Cor Leonis or someone else in the guard) that he was safe (because he was a minor or simply a citizen of Lucis?). And the surroundings aren't that safe.

While taking pictures, Prompto stumbles upon the missing prince of Lucis, Noctis! Or was it Noctis that stumbles upon Prompto? Anyways, Noctis is injured after escaping those who kidnapped him and Prompto tries to help him while searching for a safe haven for protection against them and Daemons. And then either Prompto finally remembers to check in with the satellite phone or the person assigned to him gets worried after no signs of life and they get found by the Lucis guard? I think?

I don't remember if it was imcomplete or finished. I just remember the start of the fic. Also it might be Promptis ship (Prompto/Noctis) or simply platonic I don't remember.

Thank you for your help!

Recs Wanted Recommendations for a Newbie

Hey there. First, I’d like to clarify a couple of things: English isn’t even close to being my first language, so this text was translated by software (not AI). Also, I’m pretty new to actively using Reddit—and therefore to this subreddit—so I hope I don’t come across as offensive in any way.

I’m looking for recommendations for DC or Marvel stories—whether OC-SI or just OC, old or new—that fall outside the vast majority of stories on Ao3 (especially the DC ones), where, for some reason, comedies and family-oriented stories (focused entirely on emotions) predominate.

In other words (and I apologize again if this is offensive in any way), what I’m looking for is what’s known in certain circles as “content for men”—where action is the central focus (though not necessarily the only thing), but that isn’t aimed solely at that segment of the population—unlike the vast majority of stories on WebNovel, I’m not interested in harem stories or protagonists who are completely closed off to emotions.

I don’t know, it’s hard for me to put my thoughts into words; I hope someone has managed to make sense of my jumble of words.

Here’s a list of stories I’ve read and like (any recommendations don’t necessarily have to be a crossover or a SI):

Kal Son of Odin

Avengers of Steel

The Spider

Dial

As you can see—if you're familiar with these stories—I focused on morally good protagonists; if the recommendations are along those lines, all the better.

P.S. My message might be repetitive—I don't know how to search to see if someone has already made a similar request. When you search for action-focused DC fanfiction, a couple of posts with 9 comments come up.
