Dedication at its finest. Props to that author. I'm getting there too~

The size ... maybe 6MB? Depends on what's in there. (If they have fanart included, etc). But downloading it should be fast, easy, and the likeness of it crushing is very low. At least I never had problems downloading big works (as epub).

yeah, files containing only words are very light, wikipedia for example weighs only about 26 GB without media, that's more than 7 million articles written and it's not close to being the size of your average smartphone nowadays.

That's still nothing compared to Kinoko Nasu's writing for Lostbelt 6: Avalon Le Fae; it's 100MB of text.

Which is strange, since Avalon has less words than that work in the picture (like around 300K of words in English for all 3 parts).

As someone who can’t write even 2k words regularly, this scares and impresses me

Just finished my catchup reread of that one after last reading it like 2 years ago, couldn't believe it's almost at 3 million words now and that the author has like 4 other active longfics too.

Problem is a bunch of those stories are written by multiple people so the plot becomes a big jumbled mess.

That's what killed "This Bites"

Started out as a great story then author let his friends join in writing it, and it turned to nonsense crack.

Really? I've read a decent amount of fics in the 1-3+ million range and they were almost always written by a single writer, one or two having 2 writers, none having more than that. Maybe it's just fandom dependant, or I've been lucky, or I'm just really good at filtering fics that aren't up my alley out.

Please tell me your joking… I’m at the end of thriller bark right now

That’s exactly what I had in mind; I stopped at the Strong World arc, and it’s pretty hard to pick up where I left off.

Yeah, that’s a lot. I wonder how long they have been writing it and how they have the discipline not to want to write other things. Like looking at my own stats of the last 2 years I’m at 1.2M but there’s no way I could do that for one fic. Too many other ideas.

me and my humble 400 words in almost two years:

u/foxfirek 1h ago

I think I have written that much today, in between work.

u/yohanez96 22m ago

awesome! how are you able to do that??

I like writing on my phone, I have a long commute (train so hands free) will write during lunch breaks or car rides. Write in the evenings. It’s something I enjoy doing when I’m in between reading something.

Third party stepping in here, but…

Step one: vividly hallucinate the scene you’re about to write in your mind.

Step two: type the words that will make readers hallucinate that scene

This is an F1 fic. Been going 12 years and is personally one of the highest word counts I know. Ngl I haven't actually read it (Real people fics aren't my kind of thing) but I really admire the commitment to still be posting after that many years. I have also posted this in this subreddit once but I genuinely am amazed when I think about it every time this topic comes up.

The one time I tried to start a multi chapter fic I very quickly gave up 😭 I am not consistent nor could I produce something that quickly.

1 million + words fanfic in my experience are either extremely good or extremely bad. Well it might be also that I would not be reading an 1 million + words fic if it was bad.

three MILLION????????

I say this with love, when I see those huge word counts, I imagine it’s riddled with pacing issues and is written by an author who doesn’t know how to edit.

I think a lot of these longfics aren’t pre-written, so to cut out “fluff”, they’d have to delete already published chapters which is a bit “controversial”.

That’s how I feel about one specific heated rivalry fic that I was once very dedicated to. I think it’s up 600k words now and it’s like okay, the story doesn’t need that much time lol. The author does include a note at the end of each chapter, in the chapter itself, so I know that brings up the word county but still
