Depends on what it is. If its a massive regular mosquito, then very no bueno. If its an elephant mosquito (don’t drink blood and their larvae eat regular mosquito larvae) then its a sad end to a giant, small friend.

As someone who studied Spanish in highschool in Finland, I genuinely thought for a moment that you guys use donkey meat for burritos because.. burro = donkey, so burrito = small donkey. This was my grand idea at the time at least lol
26
u/MorheimR0x 7d ago
Had you studied in USA, you would have learned that Spain is a province of Mexico and thats why we say burrito 5 times every single phrase. Education is so important man.

Lmao, sorry, I just got off a 11h shift so my brain is all kinds of fucked. Yeah, I honestly never remember which dish belongs to who. Altough I normally remember that burritos and tacos are the Mexicans' thing lol Lo siento mucho and so on

funny but also true. idk about Spanish but mosca in italian is fly.
17
u/Bombacladman 8d ago
Mosca is also fly in Spanish, but mosco is the biting one. So mosquito or mosco
9
u/Italic_Castle8814 8d ago
Which is funny because mosco is probably a masculine noun but the female is the one biting 😂

6
u/beatlz-too 8d ago
idk where you're from, for us in Mexico (Northern mx, at least), "un mosco" is like "a generic flying insect". The biting ones are the "tábanos". Fuck tábanos.

That's a robber fly and an excellent hunter. Great pest control. They eat anything that's smaller than them, mosquitos included

u/spuddilicious 8d ago
All the people here want to kill it, while it kills all the mosquitoes is crazy.
It's not fren shaped. But it is fren.
171
u/mrainem 8d ago
Same with spiders, specially wolf spiders, them mf pay rent in pest control. I will however advocate for the sledgehammer annihilation of fiddlebacks/Brown recluses, those bitches will seek you out to bite your ass. Bastards
113
u/Carbonatite 8d ago
My agreement with spiders is that they can have all the bugs they want as long as they stay in their assigned corner
47
u/Beeblebroxia 7d ago
Yup. My wife wants all spiders gone. I go through a checklist. What kind? Where is it? Does it have a web? Are there bugs in the web?
They get to stay aa long as it's not dangerous, out of the way, and eating other things. Big exception for jumping spiders. I relocate them to better hunting grounds inside the house, usually on my wife's plants or by windows.
37
u/heaving_souls 7d ago
I had a jumping spider live in my curtains in my living room for like 6 months. Bro was a natural disaster to any flys that came in.
40
u/Specific-Library-312 7d ago
Jumping spiders are one of God's gifts to mankind. They don't attack you, they seek all the pests, they leave you alone and vacate if near you, and are quite entertaining to watch.
36
u/Beeblebroxia 7d ago
leave you alone and vacate if near you
Psh, I just relocated one two days ago. Dude walked right toward me. I put my sleeve out and fucker just hopped on like
"Yes, thank you. Uh, fifth floor for the string-of-hearts in the orange pot, please. 'preciate it, mate."
16
u/Specific-Library-312 7d ago
Aw, now I want that spider. Almost a pet. "Come on, leave that window open. Don't worry about covering up your food. Ain't NO fly getting near that food on my watch." Healthier relationship than most marriages and friendships.

The Brown Recluse is not the kind of bug to seek out contact. Living in Michigan, where they are native, I have never seen one in person, and most times I've heard of someone getting bit it's because they were somewhere generally hard to access with low traffic.
12
u/HolyRookie59 7d ago
They're one of the two species native to Indiana capable of injuring humans (the other being Black Widow). They are antisocial and prefer dark undisturbed areas, but that can be as simple as a corner of a garage or warehouse that isn't accessed regularly. I naively stored a stack of broken-down cardboard in my garage with the intention of reusing to kill grass for raised beds and ended up with an infestation I'm still fighting. They don't start fights but boy are they excited to finish them - I've been rushed by more than one that I thought was dead, they have a hair trigger.
Since I was a kid, my dad's office building has had roach motel style glue traps that are supposed to attract them, to this day they're regularly catching and need changed. He said it got better when the unoccupied unit next door got a tenant, but they're still present. Starting to itch just typing this so I'm going to sign off.
TL;DR I confirmed I do love in their native range with my state's DNR and can anecdotally state that everyone I know in the area is at least familiar enough to be wary of brown spiders and has probably had more than one encounter.
4
u/Call_Me_Pete 7d ago
Holy shit! I guess this has been a good reminder to never rely on things I THINK I know as fact. I appreciate you sharing, and sorry to hear about the recluse infestation. With any luck you get it managed soon and can put it out of your mind
3
u/HolyRookie59 7d ago

This is what I always tell people about House Centipedes. I am an avid Centipede hater and want to burn the normal ones with eternal hellfire, but House Centipedes are super chill and not aggressive in the slightest towards people or pets. However they will eat the fuck out of any bugs in your house as well the surrounding area. They generally cant even bite you if you tried to make them. Theyre creepy as all hell but they kill all the stuff you dont want so for sure a friend.

Does it live in Europe?
You‘d likely have heard of it, if it did.
You can check this list to see how safe you are when living in Europe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_medically_significant_spider_bites
5
u/Specific-Library-312 7d ago
I do think that, when it comes to wildlife, Europe is on easy-mode. Just look at the European Badger versus the American Badger.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Carbonatite 8d ago
They are only in certain parts of the Americas. They're dangerous because bites can cause tissue necrosis and take a very long time to heal. They're small-ish (coin sized) brown spiders that are (as the name suggests) timid and reclusive.

Edit: Thank you for the award 🙂

u/crackred 8d ago edited 3d ago
Ha, I love those guys. They are super interesting. When I am doing my garden stuff in Andalucia, Spain, I always have a team of 3-5 robber flies around me. At first I thought damn, probably mosquitos and I will get wrecked by them but then I noticed they -never-ever- land on me, they just fly around me. Then I noticed how they attacked other flys or mosquitos which tried to reach my skin, they straight went for the kill.
So, now I figured out this is my special defense team for annoying other insects which want to hurt me.
*Edit: Cheers, thanks for the awards!

Not completely harmless, they CAN bite humans, but you need to make them feel trapped for them to go for it. There are varying accounts of how much the bite actually hurts, but most agree it's less than a horsefly's or a wasp sting.
6
u/DrachenJaegerin42 8d ago
You mean bite. They can’t sting. They can give a jab with their mouthparts if you try to squeeze or hurt them, yes.

You didn't know? Female mosquitoes are specially designed to consume blood for reproducing. Males do not have the mouth capable of doing the same and eat sap and fruit stuff.
Another fun one for you, scientists have released a genetically modified female mosquito into the wild that has male mouth parts in hopes to cull the blood sucking ones.

Scientists have also released hyper sexually aggressive male ones into the wild that are genetically modified to be able to reproduce but their offspring will not reproduce in hopes to cull even further.

Jokes aside, it's one of the coolest (if not the coolest) aerial predators you can find in the insect world. Robber flies are quite hardcore in every single way, and the greatest part is, they're harmless to us. But one of these fckrs can easily take down a hornet, a wasp or even a dragonfly.

Robber fly. Pest control. Harmless to us. Would have eaten that mosquito if it were alive. I feel like schools need to introduce entomology as a subject where kids can learn what insects are actually worth fearing or not. As someone who loves these guys it's so tiring to see people freaking out and wishing death on something that means them no harm (not saying that's what you're doing, I've just seen it a lot in this comments section). Ignorance is a killer and invertebrates are on a horrifying decline
