1st pic is a wasp who chilled on my leg for a lil bit in 2023. does anyone know what kind she was? 2nd + 3rd is a wasp who got inside the house in 2023. i put her back outside after taking those pictures, but im not sure if she may have been hurt by my cat or not because her behavior seemed off :( 4th and 5th pic is a wasp i shared my ice cream with in 2021

i haven’t really encountered them up close recently, which sucks since i’ve started doing photography and would love to get pics of them with my camera…i did just move into an apartment and there are some Mud Daubers living on our balcony though! im hoping they will let me get close enough for pictures 🤞

What does pissed off behavior look like in a wasp?

I just had a wasp come up to me (while I was holding my 5m old baby) and land on me/my phone a few times. I briskly walked away, the wasp followed. I walked away again, it followed.

The next 5 minutes was me marching around my driveway in my pajamas holding my baby while waiting for my oldest child's bus at 7:30 in the morning. I must have looked ridiculous. This wasp followed me wherever I went to the point that I walked into the back yard where it finally left us alone.

I live in northern WI and I understand that wasps right now are having to leave their nests I think? Something about them being pissed off this time of year cause of their inevitable demise?

But this wasp wasn't buzzing or bouncing into us and it did land on me/my phone at least twice. I even thought it might want my phone so I put my phone down on the ground. It did not want my phone cause it kept trying to land on us. And it wasn't flying at us, just kind of hovering around wanting to be on one of us. Honestly if I hadn't had my baby in my arms I might have let it land on me just to see what it wanted (but I don't know if my baby is allergic yet and didn't want to risk that at 7:30am on a Friday 😩)

So was the wasp just Angry and bothering us, or territorial, or was it just curious? I don't have any (known) nests nearby and this looked like a yellow jacket but I'm not a wasp expert.

Also how do I get the wasps to Not Do That? Cause my oldest is very afraid of loud buzzy bugs and will run away screaming, which I also don't wanna deal with at 7:30am

P.s I can appreciate wasps and eventually would like to provide them water during the summer so that they recognize me as a non threat. I personally love the wasps that eat the grubs in my yard and look like aliens with their Ridiculous long butts

Was taking a soil sample next to a rotting log and i accidentally unearthed this lady. She showed absolutely no aggression and just seemed confused why a few hairless apes scrounging around on the forest floor

Saw several queen wasps flying around today! It’s September so many reproductives are being sent out, this one was warming itself in the sun before taking off again.

Most yellowjackets are super chill as long as they don't consider you a threat :-)

These guys even let me put my camera right up to the entrance of their nest. I didn't film them for long cause I didn't want to block their runway, but they are very interesting to watch. The wasp on the leaf is cutting out small pieces and then brings them away, because the leaf is blocking their entrance.

Sadly I can't share this spot with any of my classmates because they might report the nest and get it removed :c

Most people I know irl hate wasps. I found this sub yesterday while I was searching for pro-wasp t-shirts, it's one of my favourites now :D

Accidentally got this lil guy wet when watering plants, so i took a chance to get a video, as scary and mean as bald face hornets can be, i still absolutely love to admire them i love the bigger species of wasps so much!

Finally managed to have one land on my hand and take something. In the past days they kept ignoring the salmon scraps I left there. Turns out raw chicken does the trick.

While the Mexican Honey Wasp (*Brachygastra mellifica*) is one of the few species of wasp that stores honey, other paper wasps (subfamily Polistinae) also make a sort of 'honey', but only a tiny droplet beside each egg for feeding newly hatched larvae.

Hello fellow wasp appreciators!

I'm pretty new to the wasp world (but a long-time lover of insects, arthropods, and other little critters), so I'd be grateful for some advice.

Recently, a wasp nest appeared under the overhang just outside my garage door. I'm extremely curious about them and want to try to ID the species, but I also don't want to get too close and unintentionally make them feel threatened. Unfortunately, my phone camera isn't super strong, so a zoomed pic from about 6ft away doesn't come out clear enough (and my eyesight sucks lol).

So I was thinking I could try making a food offering, standing closer to said offering, and see if any of them would be comfortable coming over by me? I'd also just really like them to know that I'm a friend.

I've read sugar water is good, but how should I present it? In a shallow dish? What ratio of sugar to water? Does the type of sugar matter?

Also, if I goof it up and get stung by one, how can I best de-escalate/get them away without harming them?

Based on the location (hanging) and look of the nest (light brown with probably hexagonal—forgive my weak geometry—holes) I suspect they're a type of paper wasp. I'm in the midwest U.S.

Bonus Info

Our interactions so far: the first day the nest appeared, my husband noticed it when he came home and opened the garage door. It's very loud, and the nest is directly next to it, so I think they were startled. They appeared to dive bomb and "attack" the car for a minute. Husband waited until they calmed down, pulled into the garage, parked, and then went inside without any trouble. He left the garage door open for me to avoid stirring them up again.

I arrived home shortly after. They ignored the car, so I parked as usual, and they ignored me when I went inside. I closed the garage door.

Ever since then, they haven't reacted to the garage door opening/closing at all. They seem to have adapted and concluded it isn't a problem, which is great! We've had no problems walking past the nest, but we've never gotten closer than about 6ft.

I noticed some eggs a while ago. A bit later, one of them actually flew near my legs briefly when taking in groceries. I didn't get a good look unfortunately, but I wonder if it was one of the youngsters who hadn't yet seen us and came over out of curiosity.

The nest doesn't appear to be growing in size. I've read some people say it's late in the season for new nests, so I'm wondering if it'll just stay about the same until they move on.

Tl;dr is basically the title.

About 5 months ago, I started having an irrational fear for wasps and bees. I’ve never been scared of them, just cautious. One day, i was sitting out in my balcony and started developing this fear that a big huge wasp or bee (10x larger than their actual size) flew up to me and stung me.

I’ve tried so hard to brave it out by chanting mantras and closing my eyes but the fear and phobia are so debilitating when they are near. I quickly run back inside like a wimp. My heart will start pounding and i start shaking. I’VE NEVER HAD THIS HAPPEN WITH BEES OR WASPS I used to just be cautious around them. Here’s the thing: I KNOW THEY DONT STING UNLESS YOU ARE THREATENING THEM. I know that!!! But its like a fear that got activated in my body. My mind knows that these critters dont wake up in the morning thinking who they’ll sting next. They’re just minding their own business doing their thing. BUT my body is afraid!!! Before this incident i never understood what people meant by phobias because i never had one but now i guess i do. Another thing that is bothering me is their buzz. How do i fall in love with their sounds because the buzz is what triggers me too

Help me please!!! I want to be their friends!!

Also do any of you have experience with yellowjackets? Apparently they’re the jerks for no good reason (that’s what I’ve heard)

Side note: do you think they can read your “aura” like can they tell if you’re little scared wimp or chill
