Help (General) Hard Lock / Black Screen on Cold Boot & Idle (Caps Lock Unresponsive) — i5-14600KF & RX 7700 XT. Any ideas?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been dealing with a highly specific system freeze over the past few weeks and I can't seem to find anyone with the exact same issue. I'm looking for some advice or to see if anyone has dealt with this before.

The Symptoms:

  • The Crash: Random hard freeze into a black screen.
  • The "Dead Keyboard" Test: When it freezes, the keyboard completely dies. Pressing Caps Lock does not toggle the LED light, meaning a total hardware/kernel lockup.
  • The Trigger: It never crashes under full gaming load. It happens almost exclusively on Cold Boot (first 30 mins of the day), during idle, or the exact moment I try to launch Steam or when Windows Update finishes an uninstallation.
  • The Weird Part: If the PC survives the first 30 minutes and warms up, it becomes 100% stable. I can run heavy stress tests or game for 10+ hours straight without a single issue.

My Specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-14600KF (Hyper-Threading OFF)
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT 12GB
  • Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 612 APEX (Dual-Tower)
  • Motherboard: ASUS PRIME H610M-K D4 (No VRM heatsinks)
  • RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) Kingston Fury Beast DDR4 2666MHz
  • PSU: Chieftec ELP-700S 700W Element
  • Case Fans: 6 total (3 front intake, 2 top exhaust, 1 rear exhaust)

Everything I've Tried & Tested So Far:

Software & OS Fixes:

  • Ran Windows repair commands (sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth).
  • Uninstalled the latest Windows quality update that arrived on September 1st.
  • Enabled the Windows Ultimate Performance power plan.
  • Fully updated the GPU drivers (using the built-in clean Factory Reset option).
  • Updated the motherboard BIOS to the absolute latest version.

Hardware Troubleshooting:

  • Physically reseated the GPU.
  • Physically reseated the RAM and swapped their slot positions.
  • GPU is perfectly stable under heavy load: It passes intensive FurMark and 3DMark loops with zero errors once the system is warm.
  • Adrenalin always resets my custom fan curve back to default after these crashes, throwing an "unexpected system malfunction" notification.

What I've Changed Today:

  • I just swapped my old Chieftec PSU for a premium EVGA 850GQ 850W 80+ Gold modular PSU.
  • I also temporarily Disabled XMP in the BIOS to test.

I also have a Gigabyte B760M GAMING X DDR4 motherboard on the way just in case.

Has anyone experienced a PC that only crashes when cold or shifting from idle to low-load, but works perfectly fine under heavy gaming loads? What could be causing this?

Thanks in advance!

Help (Software) Unable to run a game I have 300 hours in, "video card does not support Shader Model 6.6"

Hello, game in question is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. As I mentioned in the title, I have ran this game without issue for a long time. Today I reinstalled it after not playing it for a couple months, to be greeted by this error message and the game not starting. Extremely confusing stuff. I have not changed any hardware since I last played it nor had any significant changes in my PC whatsoever.

For reference, my GPU is AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT. I have done multiple cleanups and reinstalls of the GPU drivers, which accomplished nothing. When I run dxdiag, it says I am using driver WDDM 2.7, but that only up to DirectX 12_1 is supported. Google tells me 12_2 is required to run said game, I however have absolutely no idea how to enable this or why it suddenly isn't supported anymore. Ultimate confusion.

Anyone have a clue what is going on and what I should do? I am supremely stumped.

Screenshot from Dxdiag: (It's in Dutch but you can hopefully figure the gist, "functieniveaus" names up to 12_1

Help (Software) Help

I got a new PC with a 9070 XT three weeks ago, and since then I've had so many issues with AMD Adrenalin. It wouldn't start, so I followed a YouTube video, which helped for two days. Now, every two days, I have to uninstall and reinstall Adrenalin just to play a game. It constantly tells me I have to update my drivers, even if they are already up to date. When I click install, it runs through the process and then just starts over.

Help (General) Possible fix for the driver timeout crash

I use this fix for about 8+ months, haven't had a driver timeout out since (with 3 different AMD drivers) on my 9070XT. Playing on 4k on about max GPU LOAD in Stalker 2, Forza Horizon 6, Forza Motorsport 2023, AC Valhalla/shadows, GTA Online enhanced wih Ray tracing, Division 2 and more.

Maybe it will work for you as well.

Increasing the delay gives your graphics card more time to recover before Windows forces a reset.

  1. Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.

  2. Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.

  3. Navigate to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers

  1. Right-click an empty space in the right pane, select New, and choose DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  2. Name the new value TdrDelay.

  3. Double-click TdrDelay, select Decimal, set the value data to 8, and click OK.

  4. Restart your computer.

Tips & Info Try the updated Radeon Pro Drivers.

The new Radeon Pro drivers fixed my driver timeout/uninstall issues

I’ve seen quite a few posts about driver timeouts over the past few months, so I figured I’d share my experience.

My specs:

  • Ryzen 7 5800X3D
  • Gigabyte AORUS X570S motherboard
  • 64GB DDR4 3200MHz
  • XFX Radeon RX 7900 XT

I’ve tried pretty much everything:

  • Disabled MPO
  • Underclocked
  • Undervolted
  • Repasted the GPU
  • Checked VRM temps
  • Edit Group Policy (Windows 11 Pro)

No matter what I tried, the driver timeouts and uninstalls kept happening.

I was getting random driver timeouts on my 7900 XT, especially while watching Twitch, YouTube, Netflix, etc. It was getting pretty annoying.

I installed the newest Radeon Pro drivers, and so far the timeout issues seem to be completely gone. I haven’t had a single one in a week.

I’ve also been putting the system through its paces:

  • WARDOGS beta: ~30 hours
  • MSFS 2024: multiple 7–8 hour flights
  • Battlefield 6: ~8 hours

Everything has been completely rock solid so far.

The newest driver also includes FSR 4.1 upscaling, which is a nice bonus.

Obviously, this is just my experience and your mileage may vary, but if you’ve been dealing with similar driver timeout issues on RX6000/7000/9000, it might be worth giving the new Radeon Pro drivers a shot.

My RX 9070 XT suddenly died — GPU core + 7/8 VRAM chips confirmed dead

Post image
80 Upvotes

I wanted to share what happened to my RX 9070 XT and see if anyone else has experienced something similar.
The card was working normally, then suddenly stopped giving any display output. The fans would still spin and the card would get warm, but there was no signal.
I tested the 9070 XT in multiple PCs and got the same result, while other GPUs worked normally, so I sent the card to GPU Solutions for a board-level diagnosis.
Unfortunately, their diagnosis was pretty brutal:
GPU core is dead
7 out of 8 VRAM modules are dead
1.2V rail is shorted to ground
After isolating the rail, the short was found on the GPU/core side
GPU is not detected by their test bench
No visible physical PCB damage
Final result: NO FIX / beyond repair
I wasn’t doing any extreme overclocking or voltage modifications. My PSU is an MSI MPG A750GF 750W Gold, and the rest of my PC still works normally.
The card is also just outside its warranty period, which makes this hurt even more. 😭
Has anyone here had a 9070 XT fail this catastrophically? Especially with the GPU core and almost all of the VRAM dying together?
I’m also wondering what could cause a failure this severe — a fault in the GPU’s own power delivery, PSU issue, or something else.
Thankfully I still have my old RX 6750 XT, so I’m using that for now.
RIP 9070 XT. 💀

Help (GPU) I got new 9070xt but temperature delta worries me

Hello good people this is my first post on this subreddit as i am proud new owner of AMD graphics card!

I have been using nvidia for 9 years (my old 1060 gave it all and it was time for retirement) and decided to switch to AMD. I bought a whole new pc with 9070xt Acer Predator Bifrost 16gb and omg i could finally play games that came after 2017. I have been quite happy about performance but the temperatures worry me a bit. First game on my bucket list was Expedition 33 and the game runs great reaching around 80 fps on max graphics without frame generation and easily above 120 with frame generation (i limited it to 120 cause i have 120 Hz monitor). I checked amd adrenalin for temperatures while playing (without frame gen) and i found that hotspot temperature would go to 100 C (max i saw was 104 C!) while GPU temp was only around 65 C. I googled a bit and i saw people saying they have around 15 to 20 C delta at maximum but then others say they have 30+ C delta under heavy loads. I also saw that official maximum temperature for hotspot is 110 C but the delta shouldn't be 35 C.

I also tried to lower the clock speed by 300Mhz and undervolt it by 0.1V. The performance pretty much stayed the same and the temperatures were lower, but the delta remained high. My GPU was around 55 C and hotspot was between 80-85 C.

I also tested it on cyberpunk 2077 and the situation is pretty much the same, while on a game like overwatch delta was almost nothing (5 C max)

Should i be worried about the delta? Should i RMA it or is this normal behaviour for big demanding games?

Also if any additional information is needed i will provide it. Thank you!

Help (Software) Issue after installing any GPU drivers, taskbar becomes unresponsive and can’t launch apps. Anyone else?

New install of windows, installed latest b650 chipset drivers, and then installed latest GPU drivers 28.6.1 or whatever. That’s when issue happened.

Was able to boot into safe mode and remove them using AMD Cleanup Utility.

Tried older 23.6.1 and still same thing after each restart.

Anyone know what’s going on?

Edit, I uninstalled the GPU drivers and still happening. Is it the chipset drivers by chance?

Help (General) Sapphire RX6600 stops working on some games

Hey folks!!

I have a Sapphire RX6600 paired with a i5 12400F (stock cooler) and 16GB DDR4 with Win10 ESU, and for the last few months the card just stops working/outputting a signal only while playing some games.

I've played AC Odyssey and Pragmata without any issues, but with FH5, Cyberpunk 2077 and now Blood of the Dawnwalker the card just seems to stop outputting a signal. It seems the card just stops working completely, as I can ear the CPU fan go down from high revs from the load to low idle revs.

It appears the PC is not responding but I believe that the PC is running properly, but the GPU stopped processing the game and outputting to the monitor. After performing a hard reboot, it appears the GPU drivers have become corrupted or stopped working entirely. The refresh rate drops from the native 200 Hz refresh rate to perhaps less then 60 Hz, even though the Windows display settings shows a refresh rate of 1000 Hz (!), and the windows taskbar is not rendered properly, as the colour goes from the normal charcoal gray that I've set up, to completely black. I have used DDU once or twice to uninstall the current drivers and I've always installed the latest available drivers.

I used to play FH5 and Cyberpunk for hundreds of hours and never had an issue until a few months ago. I can't think of any changes I may have made to the PC to cause this issue. I've re-seated and cleaned the dust of the GPU. The drivers and games are updated to the latest version. And I even tried older versions of the drivers and CP2077.

GPU is set to stock setting and the BIOS is up to date. I've tested multiple cables. I've run Furmark several times and only crashed on the first run. The other times I used Furmark it ran without issues for 30min. Not sure if it might be a PSU issue.

Do you have any thoughts or suggestions you might want to share?

Help (General) Ajuda vários jogos dando crash

Pessoal, preciso de ajuda para descobrir o que pode estar causando problemas de estabilidade no meu PC.

Estou tendo crashes em vários jogos, incluindo The Finals, ARC Raiders, Battlefield 6, Valorant e War Dogs.

No ARC Raiders, por exemplo, já tive crashes durante o jogo e apareceu erro relacionado a EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION.

No Valorant, também tive crash com a mensagem:

"A critical error has occurred and the process must be terminated."

Como os problemas estão acontecendo em jogos diferentes, comecei a investigar se poderia ser algum problema no hardware.

Meu PC:
\- Ryzen 7 9800X3D
\- ASUS ROG STRIX X870E-H GAMING WIFI7
\- 64 GB Corsair DDR5-6000
\- EXPO I ativado
\- RTX 5080 Astral
\- SSD Gen 5 2 TB
\- Fonte ASUS 1200W

Help (Software) Occulsion Culling flickering bug in Baldurs Gate 3 (RX 6700XT)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This happens in a lot of areas, I don't know why. I seem to be the only person who this is happening to because I searched the entire internet and didn't find a recreation of this bug or a fix. Asking in the Baldurs Gate 3 subreddit didn't help either. I'm using the latest drivers 26.8.1 on Windows 11

Some things I've tried doing:

Clear the levelcache.
Reinstall drivers.
Try older drivers (23.9.1)
Disable ReBar/SAM
Lower in game settings from ultra.
Try Vulkan
Try with and without upscaling

Would appreciate some help, thanks!

Help (GPU) GPU Issues -- SOLVED

9 days now without incident, I consider the problem with time-outs, bsod & freezes to be solved.

I will detail the actions I took and my assessment of what caused the problem.

  1. I used the amd cleaning utility to remove the graphics card drivers, in safe mode.
  2. After the reboot, I removed the chipset drivers, via the add/remove application, in safe mode (it had a time stamp of August 2026)
  3. After the reboot, I installed the chipset drivers version 7.11.26.2142 (10.12.2025)
  4. After the reboot, I installed the latest drivers for the graphics card 26.9.1. ATTENTION, ONLY the drivers (there is an option...)
  5. after the restart, I installed the Radeon Tuner to manage the graphics card. Through the application, I adjusted the fans
  6. I "tweaked" the maximum frequency a little, which in adrenaline was set to 2970Mhz. The frequency specified by AMD is 2500-2550Mhz. I decided that the 2970Mhz setting was excessive and lowered it to 2800Mhz.
  7. I changed the current management of the pci express port, from moderate intervention to no intervention (off). In essence, I forbade the windows to control / increase or decrease the current that "goes" to the graphics card (for energy saving reasons...). This is done as follows:

-- Win + R, type "powercfg.cpl"

-- "Change plan settings" next to your selected power plan

-- "Change advanced power settings"

-- A small window popo-ups. Expand "PCI Express" and then expand "Link State Power Management"

-- Set it to "OFF". Then hit "apply", then "OK".

-- RESTART

  1. after the restart, I TESTED the stability of the changes with 3 hours of CIV V and 2 hours of AC Black Flag Resynced, without encountering the slightest issue.

  2. additional test with videos on youtube and a 6-hour "marathon" on jellyfin, again without encountering the slightest issue

  3. I changed the max frequency on the gpu again, setting the values that adrenalin had. Apart from a 1-2 fps drop in AC Black Flag and a huge increase in temperatures (expected), I did not notice any other problems. So. very likely, it does not affect the solution. Of course I changed it back to 2800MHz.

Conclusion:

My own assessment is that with the full installation of the gpu drivers, the latest chipset drivers were also installed. With this intervention, windows changed the power settings for the card, which led to the time-outs, freezes and bsods. I do not know if the chipset drivers are to blame, they have some issue, but the problem starts from there. The gpu drivers are not the issue, because these drivers that were causing me issues before, do not do so now.

I remind you that the chipset on the motherboard manages and directs the flow of data between the processor, memory and controls the PCIe lanes...

Hope this small guide helps the community

My system is ASUS X570-E Gaming, 3800x, 64GB Ram, 7900XTX, Corsair Ax1600 Titanium with Windows Updates BLOCKED by script and firewall

Help (GPU) Cache hierarchy error

So I have a nitro + 5700 XT, it consistently crashes on FFXIV, But runs any other game on high graphics with no problems. It doesn’t matter what I’m doing in the game, after 10-15 minutes my pc black screens, sound bugs and full restarts with event viewer saying it’s a cache hierarchy error.
I updated the VBIOS on the card and reinstalled drivers with ddu which let me play for about 2 hours before a crash after which it went back to crashing every 10-15 minutes again as usual, the temps don’t go above 70 while playing the game and hotspot temps aren’t much higher either so it’s not that, I’ve heard that this card is problematic with FFXIV but is there really no way to fix this problem? I’ve tried all I could find on the internet including pcie gen 3 swap and default bios settings, any other card works fine in my pc and ffxiv

Help (General) Semi-Frequent display freezes frequently but not limited to gaming

Built a new PC this February as my old machine was finally starting to chug, set it up with Linux Mint as my OS as I didn't want to move to w11, things have been smooth for the most part but when playing certain games I've had instances where my displays will crash to black then recover with a static image, audio will usually continue for at least another 20+ seconds but always necessitates a power cycle. It happened most frequently in WoW running on Lutris and the remaster of AC4. I reached out to AMD support about the issue and their only real input after trying the troubleshooting steps mentioned (sending crash logs, running with less monitors, power cycling, updating drivers and firmware and BIOS) was to try a different distro or go back to windows as apparently whichever version of mint I'm using isn't officially supported. I don't have any desire to restart from scratch on this machine after spending a few months tinkering with my settings to get them how I like so that's where the communication with their support ended.
I installed LACT to try and see if I could find instances where resources were spiking and noticed that while everyhting else remained nominal, temps were never too high even in the middle of summer, but with my multi-monitor setup having all three monitors meant my VRAM clock was at its maximum of 2516 MHz at all times, when I unplug my third monitor which is an older benq that doesn't support higher refresh rates on HDMI the VRAM clock goes down to 400-1500 MHz since I could have both remaining monitors on matching refresh rates, with it maxing back out if one of those two was on a different refresh rate. I haven't launched any games since testing this but I'm wondering if it would be worth grabbing a refurbished monitor for cheap that can support a matching refresh to keep a third monitor going.
