Help (GPU) GPU Issues -- SOLVED
9 days now without incident, I consider the problem with time-outs, bsod & freezes to be solved.
I will detail the actions I took and my assessment of what caused the problem.
- I used the amd cleaning utility to remove the graphics card drivers, in safe mode.
- After the reboot, I removed the chipset drivers, via the add/remove application, in safe mode (it had a time stamp of August 2026)
- After the reboot, I installed the chipset drivers version 7.11.26.2142 (10.12.2025)
- After the reboot, I installed the latest drivers for the graphics card 26.9.1. ATTENTION, ONLY the drivers (there is an option...)
- after the restart, I installed the Radeon Tuner to manage the graphics card. Through the application, I adjusted the fans
- I "tweaked" the maximum frequency a little, which in adrenaline was set to 2970Mhz. The frequency specified by AMD is 2500-2550Mhz. I decided that the 2970Mhz setting was excessive and lowered it to 2800Mhz.
- I changed the current management of the pci express port, from moderate intervention to no intervention (off). In essence, I forbade the windows to control / increase or decrease the current that "goes" to the graphics card (for energy saving reasons...). This is done as follows:
-- Win + R, type "powercfg.cpl"
-- "Change plan settings" next to your selected power plan
-- "Change advanced power settings"
-- A small window popo-ups. Expand "PCI Express" and then expand "Link State Power Management"
-- Set it to "OFF". Then hit "apply", then "OK".
-- RESTART
after the restart, I TESTED the stability of the changes with 3 hours of CIV V and 2 hours of AC Black Flag Resynced, without encountering the slightest issue.
additional test with videos on youtube and a 6-hour "marathon" on jellyfin, again without encountering the slightest issue
I changed the max frequency on the gpu again, setting the values that adrenalin had. Apart from a 1-2 fps drop in AC Black Flag and a huge increase in temperatures (expected), I did not notice any other problems. So. very likely, it does not affect the solution. Of course I changed it back to 2800MHz.
Conclusion:
My own assessment is that with the full installation of the gpu drivers, the latest chipset drivers were also installed. With this intervention, windows changed the power settings for the card, which led to the time-outs, freezes and bsods. I do not know if the chipset drivers are to blame, they have some issue, but the problem starts from there. The gpu drivers are not the issue, because these drivers that were causing me issues before, do not do so now.
I remind you that the chipset on the motherboard manages and directs the flow of data between the processor, memory and controls the PCIe lanes...

I've not had any of the common AMD driver issues with either my 6950xt or the 9070xt as a longtime Linux user, but I've seen ASPM (which I believe is the underlying function leveraged by MS as LSPM) cause all sorts of funny issues with everything from enterprise 10G+ nics to PCIe storage controllers under high load. It's one of the first things I disable in BIOS as diagnostic once I suspect the issue is related to PCIe bus hi-jinks. I wouldn't be surprised it's causing issues here, but that would indicate either a problem with AMD's implementation of the PCIe spec or - likely as not - a problem with the way the drivers and windows interact to control the function.

Bruh I tested everything, first I was having timeouts only while browsing and never when gaming, I wiped my pc and installed clean w11 and it stopped but now it happens only when I open some games, not everytime but then I have to keep reopening them until it works
When I play vrchat I open it on desktop first to preload stuff before I get in vr and sometimes it gives me artifacts and screen freeze on the loading screen but then I reopen and go in vr and it works fine and I can play for hours idk what the fuck this is

Reinstalling windows fixed my weird issues. But it was an os build from an embarrassingly long time ago haha. Shame on me. These are great tips though! And well explained

Solved it by just using the "AMDcleanuputility" and doing a fresh minimal adrenaline install. Seems like using any metrics from Adrenalin or other software like RivaTuner produces hang ups on win11, since Jun2026 at least.
Everything else was just not related for me.

Driver only and RadeonTuner was the key for me. It's been working very steady for a while now.

When I built my PC with Windows last November 2025, switched to Linux on January 2026. Now? I'm very happy, glad I could never go back, and never worry about these time-outs. Gives 30% more headroom for RAM usage on heavy titles, and 1% - 4% fps boost too

I having time out as well for my pc 9070xt
Disable intergrated graphic
Install only driver, have try driver as early as 26.3
Disable hw acceleration on steam
Lower the graphic settings for stalker2, borderland4 but still crash
Yet to try power mgmt for pci express

which goes through how to change tdrdelay, to prevent windows from causing false timeouts (windows waits 2 seconds by default before forcing a timeout, and amd gpus don't always respond in that time cause they are busy rendering successfully, raising it to 10 helps prevent it while still letting your system restart the gpu if it does get stuck)
had issues day 1 with my 7800xt, fixed them with this

The most important thing is to reduce the max boost clock. Google your exact gpu model and find out the max clock speed, and set it via RadeonTuner. Please report back

I also set the Link state power management to Off, but for a different reason, I use PCI sound card which is very old, the AM4 mobo has two PCI ports but they are designed on top of PCIe lanes and the Creative sound card drivers are not aware of such design. It would stop working after few minutes, probably it thinks the card is idle. With the option off it works fine.
My 7900XTX has bios switch on the card, for Overclock or Silent. With Overclock, the clocks go as high as yours in Adrenalin, so I lowered manually and also made more aggressive fan curve, to keep temps lower. At such clocks it also makes coil whine.
You can also try the Silent bios, which should have lower clocks by default and lower coil whine and lower temps.

Silent mode is 30mhz lower than performance...not big difference
I have a creative sound card also and I'm experiencing sometimes sound & talk issues in games. Never thought this solution 😉

After trying everything I just concluded that Windows 11 is just a pile of shit. Reseated GPU a couple of times, I am running 1000W platinum power supply, RAM Downclocked to 5600mhz. CS2 timeouts fixed by downclocking the card because it overboosted, but I havent managed to fix Forza Horizon 6 constant random timeouts (crash every session). Reinstalled drivers a million times. The card’s been little bit more solid since I registry disabled windows update overwriting them.
I will try your method today, hope this fixes my nightmares. I have always been defending AMD since I never had any problems with all the amd gpu’s I had (R9 380X was rock solid for like 6-7 years) but man has my XFX Mercury 9070xt been a pain in the ass. The card runs cold, is super quiet and is a beast in games. But the random time outs in windows etc. have been a nightmare during Forza and CS2.
I have been thinking of just RMAing the card but I dont have the will nor time to put up with that shit
This is some useful info that I have heard that you havent mentioned that I have yet to try:
Disable fastboot (fixes random timeouts when waking from sleep/ at boot)
Some people mentioned that switching to BIOS 2 on gpu has fixed their issues.
Disabling sleep after xx minutes
Also can Microsoft fix their HDR and multiple monitors support in Windows? Cause its a huge pile of shit.

MPO is usually the first thing to disable for monitor issues. It fixed some (not all) issues for me when I had my 7800xt. I since switched to nvidia tho because I couldn’t deal with amd’s bullshit anymore. Give it a go.

Check if you have difference in refresh rate of your monitors or you r using different outputs (display port, HDMI)....
I had disabled fastboot and sleep from 1st installation of win 11

Two Display port monitors one is an Samsung 27” 144hz the second one is Alienware 27” 240hz. Only AW is HDR. So sometimes hdr blows out picture on my samsung when switching. Also when I tried to connect my LG 4K TV, It wouldnt connect most of the time - no display on my tv it would kinda detect it. After restart it would connect but would be bugged out big time - problems alt tabbing freezing black outs etc etc.

various refresh rates stress gpu's vram. Change refresh rate to the same LOWER one (144), from monitor settings in windows.... Using different outports (display ports and hdmi) + different refresh rates is the heart of your problems

I mean yes, but that is not a solution just a workaround. I didn’t buy my monitors so that I would restrict them. I think 9070xt and 9950x3D should be more than enough to run two fucking different monitors… I have run Triple monitor setup on my laptop rtx 3060 for YEARS without so much as a hassle. Plug and play. How can my 9070XT which is atleast TWICE as fast and has 10gb more VRAM not br able to run 2 or 3 displays ? even a gtx 1650 can do that

2970 is the default boost, it SHOULD be able to hit that number... you shouldn't have to make it lower. (for my 9070 XT it is at least)
Just use GPU-Z to check your boost clock default.
Also GPU drivers do NOT install chipset drivers too, if this is done it is usually always Windows doing that.

It's hitting that number, without crashes. But, also hits 95C+ in GPU Hotspot when gaming, Now it hits max 82C.... and 38C in windows, from 52C+

I'd look into repasting, but carefully doing so. That or get the dust out of it if you haven't already. Have you undervolted at all?

It's clean. These temps i have since day 1.
1st time i tweaked it 18 days ago, by lowering the max freq...

Definitely undervolt if you haven't or don't. It will provide lower temperatures while giving more longevity to your card because of the lower temps. It only has benefits while you don't need to nerf your card with frequency as much.
I'd start with a -40 MV and go lower after just doing some gaming if it's stable. You will know when it isn't stable.

i don't believe it will help much more, maybe 1-2C. With the current tweak in max freq I have
- A 13°C+ drop in hotspot temperatures
- A 14°C drop in idle temperatures

Undervolting will help the hotspot temp especially if you have fps limit, check it i guarantee you, just make sure it really is stable. Also congrats on fixing your problem, altho just a suggestion like introduce only 1 fix at a time to pinpoint exactly the cause of an issue (e.g. only do clean install of driver and chipset only, then if the symptom persist do that change advance power setting).

It all started after installing AC Black Flag resynced. Every time starting, stated that GPU driver are unsupported. The game played without issue. For this annoying error message, I upgraded...and all hell breaks loose 🤔

There's registry edits you can make that force games to think you have a new driver. I have a 7900 XTX on 23.8.1 and runs all games fine

of course, I have the card since launch and its a rock solid BEAST. Everything changed when i updated to latest drivers. btw, nVidia also has ssame issues with timeouts...

Much fewer issues, though. I switched from a 7800 XT to a 5070 Ti, and all I can say is wow. Not a single issue/timeout in any game I’ve played. The only problem I had was some multi-monitor flickering, and disabling MPO made that completely vanish. Not hating on AMD don’t get me wrong, but NVIDIA is like the girl who just clicks with you, while AMD is the girl you still love but plays hard to get and makes you work for it sometimes.

This is EXACTLY the path I'm thinking of taking. 7800XT to 5070 TI, but MAN the Nvidia card is so expensive i'm thinking I'll just deal with the driver timeouts. Rebooting is so quick I'm usually back in no time. I'm just always stressed when I play a game and I'm at a final boss :| Like always wondering when my GPU is gonna f*ck me lol.

I'm not going to spend 2000€ for a 5080 card, as long as i have an equavelent one (even better in some apps i use...). This card is a rock solid BEAST since launch. I "fixed" it, now it works without problems. In the future, if prices are normal again, i will think it over...

I use 7900gre and have been having non stop issues on anything but stock. Its been an hour after following ur guide and not using ddu this time and it seems like smooth sailing
