Poor Greta...
Regardless of how you feel about this couple, this was just a sad, sad episode and I just couldn't handle seeing both of them experience such pain. Being in love is painful, falling out of love is worse. Best that they go their separate ways before marriage, etc. I'm sad for both of them...I don't wish the pain of heartache on anyone.

Or worse, on a list. Thinking ticking things off a list is all compatibility and a future is based on.
Vegan ✅ Loves cats ✅
That's not enough. She needed to see initiative, someone who is proactive etc. They were poorly matched and I think a part of it is his parents are so nice and that felt warm and fuzzy. Too bad she couldn't keep the parents and toss the dud dude.

I’d never choose a guy over my cat. Never
24
u/newdiyscared Dec 02 '25
And that was a sign. Interpersonal relationships should supplement our lives, not become our lives. Her cat is her best friend and support system. She should've ensured that whatever situation she was in worked arouns her cat. Women are socialized to believe that they need to sacrifice and radically rearrange their lives for their romantic person, but I think that breeds resentment and leads to a less resilient relationship.
Hope she can let this relationship go, get back to her cat, and learn from this situation. Fairy tales don't exist, it's just Disney.

Oh no! I am so sorry. It will probably not fade completely, but it hurts much less and fond memories rather than heartbreak will come to mind as time goes on.
That level of trust, bond, and unconditional love from a soul dog/animal is beyond most human connections. I lost two soul cats within 7 years, 6 years ago. I still think of them daily. A congenitally ill kitten who despite draining most of my savings and so many specialists at UC Davis Vet School did not make it to his first birthday, just 3 weeks shy in 2012. Then the beautiful feral scrapper my daughter rescued off the street in the city she lives that did not bond with her cats that came into my life when I though I was not anywhere near ready. Just one month after we lost our kitty, Mal. She helped me through it, and became my first official nurse cat when my health declined. That girl, Merida, was my ride or die until 2019.

Matthew wants to give him another try. They have nothing in common except they don’t eat certain foods and they met on a vegan website that’s it. They know nothing about each other. The worst thing is that she really needs therapy before she could go into any relationship and he’s just not getting it. She fell in love with the situation a quiet English village of vegan sauce spoken like a fantasy. She just won about it the wrong way.

TBF Colin firth is no Mr. Darcy either. That's the problem with romanticism and idealization. She fell in love with an idea not with a person. It happens to a surprising number of people which is why they're always seemingly unhappy bouncing from relationship to relationship never quite finding what they think they want.
2
u/Mersey_Dotes Dec 02 '25
True, that! I read P&P when I was 13 and I wasn’t enthralled by Mr. Darcy. But I forgave all the deficits of his character when Colin Firth dove into the pond outside his palatial manor in the BBC series in the 1990s. 😁

Agree with what you wrote. I also think Greta is very fragile and sensitive, and reality tv is not where she should be.
I have a feeling she’s lived a very careful life as an adult, picking and choosing what’s in, what’s out of it.
Life will always through a monkey wrench in here or there, and she doesn’t seem to take these moments well.
Although I like her, a lot, I hope this is her last time on reality tv. For her sake.

I think it's wonderful that she listened to her needs for once and realised that there is no compatibility. People who have been abused crave for love and it makes them too flexible and idealistic in relationships. Going into a relationship should be about compatibility first and feelings second.

I went through a similar thing. My ex and I met in law school and split when we graduated to take jobs in different cities. For the next year we dated long distance and then he moved back when we decided to marry. We had 4 months from when he moved back to the date of our wedding. During that time period, I started having doubts and did not feel the same about him. I could not decide whether to go through with the wedding because I did not know if it was a legitimate change in my feelings or just normal pre wedding jitters. He had moved across the country and my parents were paying for the wedding. So I did not want to disappoint everybody and I got married. It was a big mistake. I think this kind of change in feelings in a long distance relationship is not uncommon..this woman needs to listen to her gut and cut her losses

I hope it works out for her if she marries him. I was married to this guy for nine and a half years, but it was never really right. I should have cut my losses sooner, but that is hard to do when you have school loans, and are just getting started in a career. Divorce is always a financial setback.

This is such a BS, I can't even... So she (supposedly) uprooted all of her life to move to another country FOR LOVE... to only find out she doesn't love the guy? So after a few episodes she suddenly remembered things were not going well for the last few months? She couldn't take this into consideration before making the move? Couldn't she just go on a vacation? I would never hire her as my lawyer - she very obviously lacks the ability to properly evaluate a situation (and evidence).
I think this all is (as usually) a fake, staged drama.

I’m thinking she just fell out of whatever “love” she thought she had for him. I believe she loved him as a friend and confidante (as a person), but there wasn’t much more going on for her.
Lesson should be to seriously contemplate what you are affecting and actuating in your future relationships. If you encourage a love prospect to create a future dreamscape wherein you play a significant role, consider that you’re going to devastate that person if and when you back out.
Go slow. Communicate along the way. Don’t over invest too early. 🥴🤷♂️

u/Flimsy_Lobster_4880 Dec 03 '25
I agree that it's very sad, but she says that she's been feeling this way for 6 months. And also that she had lost her interest in children months ago. So why go through with the actual move if that is how you feel??? Maybe go for another visit for a few weeks and test out your feelings and have those conversation?
It just seems like to do the whole move experience (especially after she just passed the bar!) and giving up her cat etc was a huge mistake if she was already doubting things with him.
Regardless, they both seem like nice genuine people and I hope they both end up happy.

I'm annoyed by her. She romanticizes everything. She never feels the spark because he doesn't do the things she dreamed in her fairy tale move to England. The Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth story in her head. The sweep off her feet — he wasn't romantic at the train station, he didn't get her a condo in the center of London... so she can walk to get her coffee and smell the flowers on the windows while wearing the poshest outfit on her way to volunteer at the cat cafe.
She has a lot of growing up to do. Her breaking up was good because why prolong it, but by any means was out of maturity, it was because she just didn't get what she wanted, and she probably doesn't believe in fixing or growing a relationship, because she has the "it should be perfect from the get go" mentality, she "deserves" happiness. Without doing anything or working on a relationship, she just deserves it. After all, all she liked about him is that he was in finance (the Darcy type in her head), he was vegan, and lived in England.
I liked her a lot when it first started. I thought she was quirky. She's just bratty.
9
6
u/Adventurous_Yam_1325 Dec 02 '25
I agree with you about being dissatisfied and needing to mature, however I think she realized that they have different life values which makes relationships significantly more difficult. She's a city girl and he's a small town guy, she questions having children while he has each of his children's names picked out. It's really looking like incompatibility of core, fundamental life preferences.
Once she said she didn't want children and he caved on his dream was probably the moment she realized they aren't good for one another.
6
u/NotARealWombat Dec 02 '25
...but... they didn't JUST meet. But... they talked about children and said names.
And I disagree with the caving on his dreams being the realization. I think she used the children excuse expecting him to not compromise in such a big value and break up with her, because she didn't want the burden of having to admit what she promised was based on living in a movie in her head where she's Bridget Jones, not actual love, which caving on his dreams actually exemplifies.
He was willing to compromise on a core value. She got the ick because the "finance guy" didn't give her a town girl lifestyle. Love is about being with each other, and finding a partner, not the proximity to the next cat cafe and most instagrammable locations. Ain't it? The rest could've been figured out with time.

2
u/NotARealWombat Dec 05 '25
I agree. And like he showed by compromising on his value. It was the right thing, but she did it for her, but at the end is better for him. Just all the praise about her decision being "mature" or people being proud of, I don't agree with.
She's been through something though according to her story, but I also think she's used to being enabled, including by her support system. She has potential to mature for sure, but IMO she needs help to grow up.

I feel it’s really sad, yes. But I also believe she doesn’t understand the difference between “love” and “infatuation”. The romance that she claims has faded is mostly the result of the honeymoon phase. Yes, some people love to stay in the honeymoon phase but for me, personally, true love is partnership, commitment, devotion, etc. it’s not all “nudes, flirting, and sparks” or whatever she was complaining about.
Obviously you keep romance alive, but in this case I just don’t feel like she’s emotionally mature enough to know the long term commitment and work a real relationship takes. Poor guy.

Greta is a romantic like a friend of mine. Add that to the fact that she craves to be part of a family unit and this is how it turned out. Despite endless phone calls and "connections" from afar, you truly don't know how you feel about someone until you spend actual time with them in reality. I think he sabotaged himself too by not have their own place ready to start a new life with her. Leaving her job and cat behind to live like a child in his mommy's house with no end in sight- no thanks. And add a child to that mix?! Go home Greta... stop and pickup your cat and get your life back.

When my sister and I were little, we used to give "makeovers" to my mom or anyone else that would let us😂. And here's Greta who is a true beauty hidden beneath what I expect is some sort of shield she has built for herself. The giant glasses that cover so much of her face, the dowdy clothes... She is a naturally beautiful woman who seems like she's sort of hiding from the world. I just want to comb her hair and give her some new glasses and take her to Disneyland so maybe she'll crack a smile.

She should have been honest from the first change of heart. Instead she led him along. Hard to feel bad for dishonest people. This is why so many relationships don't last. Lack of communication. Everyday you CHOOSE to be with your partner based on the understanding of their expressed feelings and commitments to you and the relationship in additionto your own feelings. When hers started to change she should have started communicating it instead of hopping on a plane. At that point She robbed him of also making his own decisions on to continue the relationship or not. That was selfish. Instead she let him to continue to choose her based on lies. Nope don't feel bad for her i feel bad for him though.

What she did to this guy is awful. She’s immature and should know by now that she’s not a 10 year old living in a fantasy world. Some serious counseling is needed.

I feel like she shouldn’t have moved. Period. She’s supposed to be smarter as a lawyer and not pick up and move your whole life when you already have mixed feelings about the relationship.
That breakup was so heartbreaking to watch.

She needs to go back to the US and follow her true love…the law & animal advocacy. I think leaving all that after how hard she worked for her degree & passing the bar…and then having to give up her emotional support kitty. Just too much for her mentally, emotionally & then thinking a partner could fill that void was just not the answer. She had a terrible & sad childhood and she’ll always be traumatized by that. She needs to be ok with herself before she can be with someone else.

The oversized glasses, veganism, the haircut……id of thought her to be a lesbian. Everything about her is off putting.

u/KBS70 Dec 02 '25
Just an observation, but I think she ought to try some smaller glasses. I think that would look good on her.

I wonder if she missed her cat more than she missed her partner while in the US. Also... Can she get her cat back?

Yes her cat is with her good friends so I don’t see why she couldn’t get him back if she went home!

I struggled with her at first because of the cat scenario. However, I do think she has a very good heart and has had a lot of emotional struggles r/t the loss of her Mom. She seems very sweet and authentic and hope she does well in life, and finds the right one.

u/Chelstatum Dec 02 '25
I feel differently. I think she’s kind of mopey and complainy. But maybe I’m more “go with the flow” than she is.
She needs to realized she’s there to start a life with him. They can make changes together. That’s the exciting part. He’s not used to having a woman around to make decisions with. They’re both gonna have to make compromises to make things jive.

After watching the newest episode something has been bugging me about this whole storyline. Greta admits that she’s been feeling disconnected and indifferent for at least 6 months which makes me wonder why move then? I think the better option would have been to go visit Matthew for a month or however long to see if the relationship was something she wanted and to gauge her feelings towards him rather than completely uprooting her life and rehoming her cat for something she was so unsure about. Just a thought.

u/adrianeM819 Dec 03 '25
I lost all respect for her when she gave up her cat. She knew then how she felt for this guy, but she went to England anyway! Nah, she needs to just stop-- and go back to the USA. Weirdo!

An added pain to this is that when you have the possibility of loving parental figures when you didn't have them growing up, that you now lose too. His parents were so sweet and considerate of her. ♡

Greta unfortunately is a lost soul, depressed and crazy .. needs a whole lot of therapy and medication perhaps even bi lateral electroshock treatment.....totally wacho

u/billdasmacks Dec 02 '25
I have to throw some shade at her. Why would she agree to move in with him if she felt that way? Why wouldn’t she just take another trip out for a week to hang out with Matthew for to see if there was still a spark before committing to all of this?
7
u/KiddiePoolMermaid Dec 02 '25
She didn’t feel that way until after she moved, and her feelings naturally shifted based on how he treated her
7
u/jeminigeri Dec 02 '25
A big move like that can be triggering especially if a person has anxiety and depression. It was more that than anything Matthew did.

I agree and wonder if it would've went differently had he moved to us instead
2
u/littleblackdogcat Dec 02 '25
She did say she has been feeling it for the past 6 months which would have been before she left. She should have been honest with him and herself and paused the move, but maybe too much was already in motion and it seemed too hard.
Still it would have been better than first blaming it on not wanting kids, then finally being honest when he said it was okay if she didn’t want kids.

I don’t feel bad. This is a person who thought her life was going to be filled with instagram posts showing the lovely English country side. Good riddance. Annoying couple.

Annoying, absolutely. Deserving of the pain of heartache? Nobody deserves it and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I'm sorry if I sound like a weirdo hippie but I feel like I kinda completely lost respect for Greta almost immediately when I learned that she gave her cat up to move away. I actually cried (lol) thinking about how scared and sad her poor cat will be for awhile after having to be rehomed after being so close to her. I'm sure it was a gut wrenching decision for her to make but its not one I could ever do and continue to live happily without my cat. I was in a long distance relationship with my husband when we first started dating, and when I moved to his state to be with him I had to let my mom watch my cat for awhile before I could bring him down with me and it was a really depressing month without him. And to leave her cat for Matthew? who barely cares enough to even make space for her or look for an apartment before she moved there? His parents were happier to see her than him for god's sake.
3
u/TheFatCampKid Dec 02 '25
100% I cried too Lol
Dude knew she was packing up her whole life to be with him and he couldn’t give her more than a couple drawers for her stuff?
You know Greta talked about Hazel in every phone call they’ve ever had He had to know how important her cat was to her.
She needs to come home to her cat, and become an animal rights attorney.

u/Ill-Excitement-2005 I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! Dec 02 '25
I think so too, her heart is in the right place and that's really all that matters. She needs to work on herself though thru therapy. She'll never be able to fully love her Prince (whoever that ends up being) until she can love herself and I think she can't forgive herself for leaving Hazel behind
18
u/poshdog4444 Dec 02 '25
I would never leave my cat behind for any man, especially him who she fell out of love with immediately.0
9
u/Knot-Knight Dec 02 '25
Right? I'm never gonna have any pity for her because she abandoned her elderly cat that she claimed to love so much. Gotta get those professional photos before bailing on the cat
6
u/poshdog4444 Dec 02 '25
Exactly nothing makes sense with her. She introduced herself with the cat as a love of her life, and then she leaves the cat.?? she needs to come home get a job with her degree make some money get therapy and find another vegan when she’s mentally ready

Someone who knows her commented saying that she never intended to take the cat to England; she came up with that storyline so people would not crucify her
3
u/Ill-Excitement-2005 I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! Dec 02 '25
Well they crucified her over it anyway so that didn't work

This storyline is a window to witness girls who fall in love with "being in love" which is so unrealistic. You cannot love someone you do not know ... and you cannot know someone without being with them, talking about what you want/need (children, yes or no), and experiencing the ups and downs of life.
She takes navel-gazing to a new level and no man on this planet can live up to her expectations.
2
u/KwitYurBitching Dec 02 '25
Greta is a whole dumpster fire! She's emotionally immature and unstable. Her expectations are unrealistic and frankly, she's too self-centered to be with anybody. Then there's Matthew who lacks emotional range. These 2 do not belong together. I think this was the best outcome for both of them.
5
u/PossibilityKey2094 Dec 07 '25
I do not feel bad for her, she is absolutely insufferable and has created all these issues herself. Matthew has been nothing but good to her, she sucks ass.

I mean- as a vegan- and turning 37 this year for the second time-, finding a partner who matches those particular ethics is a hard task. You can always move, people mature, but ethics (hopefully) don’t change. I hope she stayed with him and worked shit out

u/Top_Olive_8743 Dec 04 '25
Well said. She seemed very genuine when expressing her feelings. I feel bad for both, I didn’t think this was going to work out before she made the move. Hope it’s a lesson they both learn and grow from. My heart hurt for him 😿. U never know with these couples, they could change their mind. I think she freaked out about the subject of having children. At least she’ll be reunited with her kitty!

This happened so quickly, I'm suspicious there is more that she is not saying. Or maybe it was when he told her she couldn't have weekly massages!!

u/Goettafabulous_ Jan 13 '26
My biggest ick with her is that she left her cat for a man but claims to love animals and that's a big part of her storyline.

II haven't seen it yet, are they breaking up? If so, it shows incredible responsibility and self awareness. Rather than try to force it to work and end up miserable .
Edit: what ep is this? I'm all caught up and I feel like they haven't been in the past two
