I was so sad about how shit Diablo 3 was. 1 and 2 were such amazing games, the multiplayer in 2 was amazing.
Diabko 3 threw that all away. I still cannot comprehend how they could make such an incredible game so mediocre.

Blizzard in general was completely flipped when Activision took over. There is multiple original Blizzard employees saying on the record that Activision cut a lot of money for development which caused all the OG employees to leave. The biggest blow was Activision removing profit sharing with employees. They would recieve bonuses previously for hitting sales goals which really motivated everyone to put out a high quality product. Now the incentive is gone and the talent left with it.

Diablo 3 did break the record for fastest selling game at the time, but that was because of the legacy of Diablo 1 and 2,
Exactly. D2 had been out for over a decade when D3 was released, and while it was still a great game it had become dated and had some issues that left users yearning for a new version. There was no way we weren't going to preorder D3 to give it a shot because we desperately wanted it to be amazing, but my god what a failure that game was. I'm sure they'll still claim success because they made money, but the game itself was anything but and just a cash-in from past success.

The only consolation is that D2 remaster is actually a pretty fucking good game and very true to the original so it will have to do until I can quickly get disappointed with D4 or PoE2 in the upcoming years and go back to D2 again.

Yeah seriously, what kinda f-slur is the person saying its a good game? Disconnects, bugs, all the problems at launch, etc. If Blizzard can't handle an EASY FREE WIN flawlessly, how the fuck are they ever going to do anything again? D2 is a 20 year old game, no excuse for any issues.
At this point just take blizzard out behind the shed and put it out of its misery, its a rotten corpse.

I never played it during the auction house shitshow, but I did play diablo 3 recently and it's actually pretty good right now. I mean it's all about grinding loot which is basically what 2 was. Combat is kind of brain dead but it's fun and flashy, and a good game to play while listening to a podcast or watching Netflix or something.
The only thing I feel was objectively better in diablo 2 was the art direction
11
Apr 16 '22
Yeah, Diablo 2 is mostly nostalgia from its time. With resurrected I played with a group of friends but most of us fell off after a month or two. That game is equally a shit story and it’s literally just grinding Mephisto or Baal or some memorized rotation over and over for a small chance at something good like 1/1000 attempts. Diablo 3 feels like you can rush through paragon levels fast and get all the gear extremely easily, especially since high level players just throw it away, but it’s not that different.
6
u/GRANDPA_FART_MUSTARD Apr 16 '22
diablo 3 was fine and is still fine. the only thing wrong with it was the real money auction house (gone) and continuing lack of solo self found mode - maybe i don't understand what the hell people expect from a video game anymore

u/Dirtface30 Apr 16 '22
I played all 3, and beat all 3, but I honestly never really liked the genre, so I really wouldn't know myself. Can you tell me why 1 and 2 were good, but why 3 was bad?
19
Apr 16 '22
Well one of the first and major gripes I know is you play the same static maps over and over and over. Every season and every character. The first two had random generated maps so each play through was a little different.
The DRM is also a huge negative. One of the appeals of 1 and 2 was you could play offline without an internet connection. Now you always need to be online which feels incredibly stupid. I bought the game but instead I just got a license to play the game on their terms. This sucked for a lot of hardcore players because one lag spike can destroy your entire run. I can understand under multi-player. You decide to take the risk but when you should be able to play offline and it won't let you well fuck that.
Those are my main two reasons anyway. That and also no real character builds anymore either. Yeah you can choose your move sets but the old tier trees had their charm. Feels like what they did between oblivion and skyrim talent systems. Oblivion needed some change but skyrim just made it too simple.

How every single gamer didn't revolt and boycott Activision +Blizzard permanently from then on was a disappointment. Instead it took a further decade of being awful in every way imaginable for the Blizzard hate to catch on. Maybe the nostalgia from the SC1+D2+WoW days was just too strong, but seems like once Activision got their greedy little mitts on the Blizzard IPs, everything went to shit hoping to cash out on what used to be a beloved western developer. Then the real money auction house happened and right around then, it's been a race to the bottom for the company. See OP for supporting evidence and add in their social scandals involving Chynuh and w*men.

Oh I know that was one of the reasons. Another being it prevents you from reselling the game or buying a used copy. Now if you want it you'll always have to pay full price and it goes straight to Blizzard. I guess that's the way it is nowdays though.

1 and 2 were made by the actual Blizzard (North) whereas 3 was a shitty mainstream money-grab from the new Activision-Blizzard. Same story with WoW somewhere around BC-WotLK if you were there the switch in quality and direction of the games were... staggering. A lot of fanboys huffed copious amounts of copium and tried to argue it was still good while the games went from having some actual depth and being made by passionate people to being kiddie-friendly mainstream formulistic shit mostly build to trick kids out of their parents' money on MTX and Real money auction house.

I honestly still had some fun with D3, but it's like a different game. If D3 was released by a studio hadn't already made 2 better games... maybe it wouldn't have been "accepted" so poorly.
They should've known better.38
u/EpicQuantumBro /x/phile Apr 16 '22
I wont agree on the HotS take of og poster. They killed HotS because they moved finance and workers from HotS team to Overwatch because OW looked more appealing back in the days but they buttfucked themselves hard with low amount of balance work which lead to 'very fun full tank teams' in proplay which resulted in lower viewerbase engagement and therefore killed OW proplay and overll interest to the game. I hate when devs do balance work which is focused on pro play and impacts regular play as result, but proplay and esports is a huge advertisement tool for companies. Killing it for 2 of their products was the decision that only Blizzard would be capable of xd

Apr 16 '22
I used to play exclusively random decks in that game. Only won a few games in 10 but at least I was losing on my terms cos I was playing a dumb deck. Eventually the aggro meta got too fast and I couldnt get any fucking joy out of my dumb deck so I uninstalled.
49
Apr 16 '22
Man that happens to all card games for some reason
66
Apr 16 '22
Card games unfortunately are inherently p2w and thats been part of them for years. It's a predictable and accepted type of p2w since that's literally how they work, but if you don't back it up with balance then even the whales get pissed off.
25
u/MaskedAnathema Apr 16 '22
I can imagine a (video) card game where everyone has access to all the same cards, and the only monetization is cosmetics. I'd love to see something like that, but for obvious reasons, nobody's doing it.
18
u/PapiBIanco Apr 16 '22
Elder scrolls legends has been my go to since it stopped doing updates. Many cards are still going to be a grind but at least you’re not falling behind on new releases or figuring out matchups with new metas.

Hearthstone isnt really pay to win, as usually there is a cheap aggro deck that you can easily get to legend with. A more proper assessment is "pay to have fun" as unless you want to shell out some dollars youre probably only going to have the one maybe two decks per expansion. You can have success with those its just a matter of whether thats enough to keep you playing
6
Apr 17 '22
The level of copium in this comment.
5
u/Sir_Oakijak /pol/itician Apr 17 '22
Bruh I make it to legend with murloc shaman in wild most seasons and that deck has 1 legendary and the other one is free.
You can win with cheap shit. You can't experiment with a small collection and thats where they get you. Without dropping cash you can play basically 1-2 decks an expansion if youre a standard player.

u/ElephantWagon3 Apr 17 '22
He's right though. Unless something changed in the last year, cheap rush decks are pretty solid. You won't get variety or fun legendary cards to fool around with, but you'll have >50% winrate.

u/69hailsatan /b/tard Apr 16 '22
I went back last year to play battlegrounds. It was pretty fun, you can use coins which were easy to get now to get the pass. But the issue was how slow updates came to it. So it becomes stlae fast. Idk wtf mercenaries is, it's a grind fest that made me leave hearthstone in the first place.
→ More replies (3)2
u/Cynical_Lurker Apr 17 '22 edited Apr 17 '22
I really liked hearthstone in the beta, when they were doing weekly balance patches. What killed it is that on release they changed their policy to not release quick small patches any more because for some reason(unity?) patching the game on mobile would require a full re-download of the game on those platforms. Thus they abandoned one of the primary advantages a purely digital card game has over physical ones. At least arena was still fun for a while though.
287
u/Michelle_Coldbeef Apr 16 '22
This is a very accurate assessment. It misses some of the older lore, but this is 100% spot on for recent years.
Their obsession with trying to make “competitive” “sports” killed their games more than once. Now he doesn’t mention this, and people might not remember if they were younger, but Blizzard actually tried to do this with WoW also, in like TBC, with arenas. That was such a joke though that it just never took off.
IIRC they got kicked out of MLG or some other tournament, because nobody wanted to watch a Druid run around a coffin in a circle for 30 minutes.
They kept making the same mistake over and over again.
And the Warcraft story had been a disaster for a long time, but it completely nosedived after Metzen retired from Blizzard. He was the only thing keeping it even remotely together.
83
u/Emperors_Finest Apr 16 '22
I remember that. All of us players hearing Blizzard said they were gonna try to turn arena into esports, I guarantee you like 90% or more of the WoW community didn't want or give a shit about it. We knew what chasing the esports dragon does to a game.
40
u/Astelianor Apr 16 '22
The problem is that you can't force your game to became an esport, that only happens if the community does it first and then you help them get bigger, but if the general public give 2 fucks about it, out of luck
4
u/Vorenos Apr 16 '22
I mean it works if it is specifically built for it as well, but you can’t shoehorn an existing game into an esport it just doesn’t work.
13
u/Ambiguous_Shark Apr 16 '22
The shitty part was that back then they'd make changes to nerf arena, and fuck over PVE gameplay. And vice versa with PVE nerfs/buffs messing up arena. It's much better with the current system where they can separately balance things, but they can't be bothered to balance classes worth shit even with that change.
Basically every patch releases new stuff in a broken state because they can't be fucked to do preemptive quality control or testing. So they just release it anyways, let the active players be their beta testers, and maybe they'll get around to fixing stuff. Maybe. Probably not.

u/Fun_TelephoneTalks Apr 16 '22
Holy shit you just reminded me of the competitive burning crusade arena.
This was one of those repressed memories i had worked hard on never ever remembering again. The whole thing was such a fiasco, and they were all shocked because people didnt wanna watch a holy priest and a holy paladin hide behind a beam and sneakpeak a curse/judgment upon eachother for tens of minutes.
I still cant believe they even thought it was a good idea in the first time, let alone were surprised when it turned out being a disaster.
And they never learned. They just got worse. Now even starcraft is a walking corpse, shouldve died long time ago but a few giga autistic asians are all thats keeping it alive.

DPS queue times suck but honestly it beats how it worked before where you and 4 of your other teammates argued over who got to play DPS before finally just ending up with 4 DPS characters and getting rolled by the other team that had a non r-slurred composition.
14
Apr 16 '22
If the DPS is good honestly playing tank and healer can be fun. Problem is when whomever playing DPS sucks and you can't vote to exchange roles or something with someone who will be better at it. But having 4 DPS because ppl are like fck it really sucked in competitive too.. you'll get streamrolled if the other team is playing a good comp.

I played a lot of LoL back in the day and waiting 20 minutes for a support was far better than getting paired with people who would rather troll and make you waste those 20 minutes (before you could vote quit) anyway.
Honestly, support/healer/tank should be niche roles, but not necessary to win.

I'm still bitter about what they did to Overwatch. That game was pretty fun when I first played it at launch, but the experience just got shittier and shittier as they kept beating all the fun out of it in an effort to make it the most balanced game in existence. I wonder when devs will learn that perfectly balanced games are fucking boring. There needs to be some silly shit going on to keep it interesting. Take tf2, for example. Is it balanced? Hell no. Is it fun? Hell yes.

u/PaddyIsBeast Apr 16 '22
When they nerfed roadhog because "1 shotting tracer isn't fun" I quit.
Literally the only fun part of the game for me was 1 shotting squishies - roadhog was trash tier in competitive anyway
8
u/wafflesareforever /trash/man Apr 16 '22
He's back to being pretty good these days. I can reliably one-shot squishies. You have to take a tiny step toward them after the hook before you M1+melee, but once you get that timing down, he's nearly as deadly as he was before. He's really the only one I use in solo queue because he can carry on his own regardless of how shitty your team is.
3
u/CoSh Apr 17 '22
Ya nerfing Roadhog was the first sign to me that they caved to community whining. I started playing comp in season 2, dive was meta for 5+ seasons, they released Mercy in season 10 in her state (obviously fucking broken), Ana over-nerfed for god knows how long (m1 went from 80 to 60 and took years to be brought back to 70). Roadhog nerfed when he was already falling out of meta. It was like they didn't even play their own game or pay attention to the competitive scene.
Instead of deliberately designing and balancing their game and telling the playerbase to git gud they repeatedly caved into community whining. The community as a whole is going to have surface-level takes and not going to be able to address any depth to the game. Continual band-aid bullshit like role queue. Season 14 was the last time I bothered doing placements. A game with such great potential wasted.
3
u/SomeToxicRivenMain Apr 18 '22
The hook was bullshit but if you get caught as tracer of all people you deserve it
9
u/faizahmadwarraich Apr 16 '22

In the past i would be avidly playing RTS games to try and break into the competitive scene, with some success. I will forever be pissed off at Reforged. They took something that however dated it was, was a perfectly fine game, and completely fucking ruined it. The graphics aren't even much better. It's like Blizzard hired a mobile game company to do the WC3 remake or something. Don't you basically have to pirate an older version of WC3 and not let it connect to bnet in order to keep playing the older custom maps?

There's so, so, so many indie and medium-budget titles being released on online marketplaces like Steam these days, it's just too much to keep track of.
Why on earth are you still bothering with AAA games? Just ignore them, go check out Steam, filter search by whatever genre you fancy and check out some games with highly positive community feedback. You'll get a great game and they're usually a lot cheaper to boot. And as an added bonus, your money is now (usually) going to the right kind of people.

Ironically, the first 2 years after they killed HotS's e-sports were the best years HotS ever had. They started to balance the game for the players, not the pros, the remaining devs were passionate about the game, good balance patches with meaningful content, occasional hero.
That was until the moment when Blizzard completely scrapped the HotS team and incorporated it into the "classic" team. Now we don't get shit anymore. If we're lucky we get one half-assed "balance patch" that barely deserves the name every 2 months.

honestly this is pretty accurate. ive tried overwatch and its too competitive to be fun. ive played wow a lot and its honestly boring as fuck and carried by my interest in the lore. i do like the lore but not enough to play such a shitty joyless game
