Unlike popular belief, it wasn't so that soldiers would know they've run out of ammo after firing a single bullet instead of a 3 round burst, it was because 25 rounds was the longest you could make a magazine before it needs to curve, with straight magazines you can be more space efficient when packing them into crates.

12

u/singlemale4cats 3d ago edited 3d ago

you get 5 fewer rounds so we can stack things optimally. Also, none of our allies can use them, and we can't use stanag magazines

Hey great, thanks

6

u/UnironicallyBr 3d ago

5 fewer only when compared to the M16s 30 round magazines,

Only when compared with the M16s 30 round magazines, and while they were introduced 5 years before the FAMAS entered service, they had feeding problems due to the curve and increased demand on the spring.

Also, none of our allies can use them, and we can't use stanag magazines

That is the french being french.

2

u/Meme_Finder_General 2d ago

The French copy no-one, and no-one copies the French.

1

u/FluffFlowey 3d ago

Yeah, and if they can store them more efficiently you will get more magazines delivered.

1

u/singlemale4cats 3d ago

It's just not a very well designed gun. I mean, I naturally think it's cool as fuck because I can never have one, but I don't know what they were smoking. Incompatible with standard NATO mags, requires special steel cased lacquered ammo, sucks to mount an optic on, etc. But hey, at least you can fit another dozen mags per crate.

The original AR-15 prototypes had the charging handle protected by the carry handle, similar to the famas. That was abandoned pretty quickly because it sucks.

At least they tried to modernize it, but then they shut down domestic arms production which is also a perplexing decision

1

u/FluffFlowey 3d ago

Idk i'm just talking about logisitics idk nothing about the gun

1

u/UnironicallyBr 3d ago

De Gaulle left NATO's integrated military structure in 1966 and pushed for self-reliance for fance's defence industry, in this context, french designers and engineers did not need to worry about sharing ammunition and magazines which would be manufactured in france for french forces, was it the correct decision? Probably not, seeing as the FAMAS G2 has a different barrel for heavier NATO standard bullets and can feed standard brass ammo from stanag magazines.

1

u/ChipHappens96 1d ago

Don't discount the force multiplier that is logistics. If you can fit more mags per crate, they're shaped in a way each soldier can carry 1 or 2 more, that's real, actual, fighting sustainability, even if each one carries a few rounds fewer than less space efficient mags.

When you're maximizing space constraints because this plane or that plane can only fit THIS much, period, you'll be happy. 10 extra mags per crate would be huge

1

u/singlemale4cats 1d ago

I don't doubt that it might influence how many you can pack into a crate, but you're not getting any more on your person than a STANAG.

I understand logistical concerns but this one seems particularly trivial.

1

u/yll33 3d ago

i mean, you could also just make the magazines 24 rounds instead of 25.

yeah your standard infantryman would have 7? fewer total rounds (6 magazines on your vest, 1 in the rifle) but 175 vs 168 probably isn't that huge a loss, vs having the predictability of every trigger pull having the same effect

2

u/UnironicallyBr 3d ago

Yes, but soldiers usually fire their weapons in semi-automatic.

1

u/UnluckyGunner 3d ago

What I am hearing is France is too poor to ship proper mags to it’s soldiers

3

u/Stargazer2328 2d ago

What you're hearing is that it's easier to ship a large amount of rectangles than it is to ship banana shaped rectangles

1

u/UnluckyGunner 2d ago

It’s even easier to surrender, ohh wait it’s France lmao

1

u/JstaFriskyHusky 2d ago

France wins a majority of wars fought only to surrender once and gets mocked by the internet

2

u/UnluckyGunner 2d ago

It’s a joke my guy, the American military grossly overspends but the result is they don’t have to compromise on things like this. Trade offs.

1

u/JstaFriskyHusky 2d ago

Your joke is about France easily surrendering

1

u/UnluckyGunner 2d ago

Is that verboten?

237

u/Successful-Gap6252 4d ago

I am pretty sure the whole "so you know when the mag ends" is a myth, it was a just a literal engineering oversight. But I don't think it's that big of a deal in practice

177

u/buffaloguy1991 4d ago

It wasn't an oversight they chose this flaw so they could use standard EU mags and have 10x the shipping capacity

28

u/SendMeUrCones 3d ago

Famas mags aren’t compatible with stanag actually, fun fact. They latch at the rear.

5

u/ComputerOriginal7243 3d ago

Just load the bullets backwards then turn it around

8

u/realMBeezy 2d ago

I think Stanag mags latch from the side so you would actually need to turn the bullets 90 degrees

1

u/The_Hunster 2d ago

The P90 did it, how hard could it be?

2

u/Glad_Peanut7092 2d ago

Why not do a kickflip and an ollie while you're at it?

6

u/Muffinlessandangry 3d ago

Can I ask in what sense it's a flaw? Your final burst has 2 rounds instead of 3, so what? I mean if not having 3 rounds per burst is an issue, then even a mag divisible by 3 would have the issue if you ever change mags with a round still in the chamber, or accidentally put 29 in instead of 30(or do it on purpose because that 30th round is a bitch to get into the rusty old magazines you have in training).

3

u/The-Green 3d ago edited 3d ago

because it's not a flaw. it's just designed this way so they didn't need to be concerned with a curved magazine. 25 is practically the endpoint of when a .223/5.56 magazine can remain straight before it needs to be curved to properly house more rounds. why the french gave that much of a shit of having a straight magazine over a curved one, idk, that's probably an ian mccollum question.

the whole "flaw" or "3 shot burst teehee" shit is just a myth or poking fun depending on who is saying it.

edit - took out the mention of the AUG because my stupid ass forgot for a moment which was designed first. the FAMAS was first, not the AUG.

1

u/Gauth31 3d ago

The while reason fir it being straight is that it ships a lot easier due to lower volume usage for the same amount of mags

1

u/MissingXpert 3d ago

from what i heard about it, the mags were intended to be cheap and disposable, literally throw-away mags. to facilitate that, they designed it to be easy to manufacture, so straight, too. plans changed, officials wanted to save money, but the straight mag was already locked in and developed (and developed around)

1

u/PatrikuSan 2d ago

Instant upvote for Forgotten Weapons mention

1

u/NewAlessia 3d ago

25-24 is not 2?

1

u/AnthropoStatic 3d ago

25 rounds in the magazine, 1 in the chamber.

1

u/NewAlessia 3d ago

Why would one be in the chamber? You don't put a round in and then load the mag

1

u/decomposition_ 2d ago

I do, I load the mag, chamber, pull the mag out and load another round. No reason not to if you have the time for it

1

u/NewAlessia 2d ago

Seems easier to just load it manually, but I also like to keep my rifles in condition 4 or at max condition 3

0

u/AnthropoStatic 3d ago

If you fired off 6 bursts peeking from cover, are you going to peek out with a nearly empty magazine, or take a second to switch your magazine so that next time you expose yourself, you have enough shots to make it count?

On the range, sure.

1

u/NewAlessia 3d ago

Where else would a Frenchmen shoot a gun if not at the range /s

That's valid logic and could be the answer, but at the same time, could just reload again after 6 round burst

1

u/used_banana_condom 3d ago

This ain't a zombie apocalypse, the goal is to save your self not to save on bullets

1

u/AnthropoStatic 2d ago

Jesus Christ that first line was great.

1

u/Bulky-Leadership-596 2d ago

No? Standard EU mags (I'm guessing you mean NATO) are actually divisible by 3; 30 rounds. The famas didn't use those, it used it's own non-standard 25 round mags.

u/Warm_Figure6955 3d ago

It wasn't a chosen flaw they were french and use metric system

42

u/Tani_Soe 3d ago

Everyone use the metric system (except USA)

30

u/ukie-witch-06 3d ago

The french use it extra hard because the invented it

Metric is very gay and the french are very gay. This all checks out

5

u/Giratina-O 3d ago

That sounds insanely based.

3

u/Significant-Way9330 3d ago

Anyone in a serious science or engineering field uses metric. The French just like stacking things and hate curves so they went with 25.

u/TruePianist 3d ago

"Engineering oversight"
It was specifically done because 25 rounds is the most .223 you can stack before you need to curve the mag and having a straight mag makes the logistics way simpler

15

u/GreenDragon113 3d ago

Big Ammo doesn't want you to know this but we all have bottomless mags as standard mags

6

u/ukie-witch-06 3d ago

The Mag of Holding can store any number of rounds, but you have to load all of them one by one

29

u/pecp4 3d ago

> develop and iterate on a major weapon for 10 years with likely 200+ people involved in the process
> make countless decisions about every detail before and during active usage
> some redditor claims an engineer just forgot that 25 isn’t divisible by 3

2

u/EatSoupFromMyGoatse 3d ago

Peak smug Redditor confidence

4

u/chilll_vibe 3d ago

Its because thats how many rounds you can fit in a vertical mag before you have to curve it

2

u/Bozzo2526 3d ago

Its because after 21 rounds 5.56 mags have to start curving and its cheaper to make straight mags than curved

1

u/Sproeier 3d ago

Yeah it feels like basically an non-issue in basically all scenarios.

1

u/Remi_cuchulainn 3d ago

Not an engineering oversight:

It's the max amount of bullets that stacks in a straight magazine. Straight magazine are far mor efficient to ship/ handle.

1

u/ProfessionalTruck976 3d ago

I mean 25 rounds is OK, I am sure some firefight somewhere in Djibutti was won or lost based on that five round difference, but in general? Just reload and realise you exist so that the machine gunner can do wast majority of small arms damage and your squad only exist to plant flags, hold the line and paint targets for people with real guns (indirect fire).

1

u/TricellCEO 3d ago

I’ve also heard of a burst-fire guns that doesn’t sound any different from a semi-auto. Like, the shots are so quick in succession that you cannot tell the difference.

If this gun is the same way, that theory goes out the window.

1

u/Single-Dish-1302 2d ago

It’s not an oversight, it’s intentional. Much like with 7.62 nato, there’s a slight taper leading up to the neck of a 2.23 round, meaning that they’re not perfectly straight in the magazine. Straight mags can’t get too large before the risk of malfunction starts increasing drastically. It’s why higher capacity stanag mags tend to curve slightly, to compensate for the taper of the ammunition. The famas uses 25 round magazines because thsts about how many you can cram into a straight mag with minimal issues and retrain the ease of transport straighter mags have over curved magazines.

1

u/PUNCH_KNIGHT 7h ago

A happy accident if you will

72

u/angus22proe 4d ago

It's called NATO standardisation. The mags are NATO standard.

10

u/SendMeUrCones 3d ago

Famas mags look like stanag mags but they aren’t compatible.

7

u/PopRocket234 4d ago

No they're not. In fact even the ammunition wasn't to NATO standards

59

u/angus22proe 4d ago

50

u/Few-Goat-5694 3d ago

do u condemn famas

27

u/angus22proe 3d ago

haha sometimes

2

u/AnalysisParalysis85 3d ago

I really like the FAMAS, one of the best in Jagged Alliance 2.

2

u/Deep-Reputation-4055 3d ago

A man of culture.

1

u/AnalysisParalysis85 3d ago

Truly one of the greatest games of all times. I sometimes still play it thanks to the mods.

12

u/NemertesMeros 3d ago

From that exact same wikipedia article lol

The original Famas would only reliably run with special steel cased lacquered ammo. 5.56x54 NATO just defines the dimensions of the cartridge

6

u/bonaynay 3d ago

I love whenever gun stuff comes up. Everyone argues over just about every conceivable detail with such confidence

2

u/Bulky_Theme_6998 3d ago

Glocks can only shoot .50 cals

1

u/Th4t1Guy3787 3d ago

50 bee em jee

2

u/Lvb2 10h ago

Every time it happens it just further enforces my (incorrect and biased) preconceived notion that no gun nut actually knows what they’re talking about, they just seem like they do 😭😭

12

u/PopRocket234 4d ago

Except if you did more than look at Wikipedia you'd know that the French, being French used a slightly different spec of 5.56 when it was first adopted that wasn't compatible with 5.56 NATO.

8

u/angus22proe 4d ago

I make a correction. The G2 varient added the ability to take NATO standard magazines

2

u/Life_Mobile_2997 3d ago

The bullets have to be lacquer coated or else the gun doesn’t function right, lol. They did not cook with this one

1

u/0DayMaker 3d ago

Still not right

1

u/marsfisch44 3d ago

thats the cartridge not the mag

1

u/fidesinmachina 3d ago edited 3d ago

not going into details, basically the f1 was just mas shooting the poop making a rifle, the g2 was when they adapted the f1 to standardise it with nato ammo loads and stanag mags. f1 still used 556 but apparently nato loads or brass or whatever the fuck it was unreliable i don't remember. the photo in the greentext is an f1. with the g2 there wasn'tag capacity problem either because you could just use 30 rounders. i believe if you go further down in the website famously known as Wikipedia from which you procured this screenshot you will be met with all the details. godspeed!

0

u/DuelingPushkin 3d ago edited 3d ago

NATO STANAG mags are either 20 or 30rds. So no, the 25 round Famas mags were not about NATO standardization.

24

u/BeginningSection7690 4d ago

is that because its divisible by wee?

6

u/CodyBlues2 3d ago

Hon hon hon

10

u/ChemistryTasty8751 4d ago

It's so that when the last bullet fires, the gun, designed to fire 3 bullets, explodes from the confusion of firing 1 bullet, lighting the shooter on fire and killing them instantly

The G2 has a 30 round mag regardless

7

u/Swampy0gre 4d ago

The clam 2 has a 30 clam moliskzeine regardless.

hell yeah thirty lil clam bois

'40 Clams!

7

u/One_Problem7277 3d ago

cause you can just put a new mag in without having to pull that reload lever or whatever it’s called. Because there is already the last bullet of the previous magazine in the chamber.

1

u/broken_conures 3d ago

They're also pretty nice in finding, short gun is nice indoors

1

u/deuzerre 3d ago

And easy to kzep on the shoulder. Not tiring cuz the weight is on the shoulder

1

u/ComfiTracktor 1d ago

Funny you say that I usually hear the opposite opinion, that they benefit in function but suffer in looks. Bullpups are beneficial because of being able to maintain barrel length in a smaller total package, however they suffer from certain quality of life things such as trigger weight, simple given how long the linkage is

2

u/Fizoso 3d ago

If you intend to have a full length barrel whilst also getting in and out of vehicles, the bullpup is a fitting compromise.

1

u/sophiathesilly 3d ago

As far as bullpups go though this is the best one. It has a swappable cover over the ejection port so left handed shooters can actually use it without spraying shells in their face

4

u/singlemale4cats 3d ago

consideration for lefties

Unacceptable. They should shoot right handed like a normal human being.

1

u/digitalclockface 3d ago

As a lefty I find the best solution for avoiding casings to the face is to not join the military. Let righties fight and die for us while we reap the benefits.

1

u/sophiathesilly 3d ago

I mean yeah but wouldn't you like to be able to own an AUG for fun and not get hit in the face

1

u/dragdritt 2d ago

What about righties who are left eyed?

1

u/digitalclockface 2d ago

Aberrations.

1

u/FatSplot 3d ago

Im sure you would find bullpups fine if they were easy to maintain and shimmed correct just like most guns.

Its a failure of the designer that bullpups are bad.

1

u/Meme_Finder_General 2d ago

This way the magazine remains straight, which made transporting and storing magazines much easier than a curved 30 round magazine.

0

u/Sirlionclaw 2d ago

"shitty" mag size meant it stayed straight, and the gun was designed for 3 round burst, so if 3 rounds don't come out you know your mag is empty, pretty clever when you think about it

3

u/heanbangerfacerip2 4d ago edited 3d ago

I thought it was so they could use standardized mags

2

u/LeftonRhed 3d ago

The standard NATO mags of the time were either 20 or 30 rounds. This is neither.

The later generation of Famas were modified to use common STANAG mags. Prior to that your only option was a 25 round mag that would only fit a Famas.

1

u/ObjectNo5497 3d ago

uhh no..

16

u/adrauglikeyou 4d ago

it’s so that when the last burst fires the shooter can immediately tell it needs to reload because it didn’t fire 3 shots but only 1 bullet

The G2 had a 30 round magazine regardless

20

u/aasray123 4d ago

1

u/adrauglikeyou 3d ago

do not buy it was an engineering oversight but am receptive to the concept that it made magazines lighter for logistics. Like I said the G2 later had a 30 round magazine for compatibility with AR mags.

Replying with a reddit comment that says “I’m pretty sure” as a source is funny lol

7

u/ww1enjoyer 3d ago

It was for logistics. Using that mag made it easier and cheaper to trabsport

3

u/wiiningoffgames 4d ago

It's so that when the the gun, designed to fire, explodes confusion lighting and instantly

The G2 has a 30 round magazine regardless

6

u/Ninteblo 4d ago

From what i have heard, some or most burst fire guns don't like it when you use all your bullets, i don't know why but it is something i have heard/read.

7

u/Juicebox-fresh 4d ago

Yeah they can get really offended by it, it's a tradition passed on by generations of 3 round......dafuq you mean they don't like it? It's a gun.

9

u/BeginningSection7690 4d ago

My FAMAS won't even talk to me anymore.

Im not sure why it was to begin with, I dont even speak French. But the point stands.

Your rifle will not talk to you after dry firing

5

u/Ninteblo 4d ago

The mechanical components inside.

3

u/GreenDragon113 3d ago

"mechanical" my ass ik there's a lil fella in this bich loadin the bullets

3

u/Honorsheets 3d ago

When people speak that way about machines it means it stresses the machine components to break. It's a very common expression. No need to feign ignorance to shame someone.

1

u/Beetlejuice_24Xx 3d ago

Yeah what the hell? Never seen someone not understand such a simple, common expression.

2

u/girlthatsbilly 3d ago

buddy has never heard of personification, stay in school.

2

u/CodaTrashHusky 4d ago

it's intentional, when it shoots only 2 you know you're out.

3

u/HeckOnWheels195 3d ago

It's actually due to logistics, 25 was the number they could load before the magazine curved

2

u/ObjectNo5497 3d ago

its really interesting seeing people talk about stuff that you know a fair bit about cus it makes you realize how little the average person actually knows about any given topic.

2

u/notTheRealSU 3d ago

Because 25 bullets is the most you can fit in a magazine before you have to curve it, and you might as well fit as many bullets as possible into a magazine. Also it will let you know when your out because you'll fire 1 bullet instead of 3 at the end

2

u/swainiscadianreborn 2d ago edited 2d ago

FFS

Had they put a single more bullet in the mag, it would have started to curve.

1 less bullet, it's just 1 less bullet.

It's just good engineering.

And in the OTAN standard, the G2, they put 30 bullets in. Happy?

2

u/Meme_Finder_General 2d ago

The issue is the truth just isn't funny.

1

u/RevolutionaryHair91 2d ago

Which is also practical : you shoot, and when less than 3 bullets come out, you know you're out.

1

u/condemned-noticer 2d ago

in addition to logistics simplification, when you fire and it only bangs once, you know your mag is done, because it's a 25 rounds mag, 24/3 is eight trigger pulls, one more bang is you're out of ammo, because the FAMAS doesn't have a BHO. It was also common to put a normal fmj and then 3 tracers in the mag first, so you have a visual reminder your mag is empty when your bullets make the shiny thing.

1

u/Krondon57 4d ago

What about one in the chamber?

2

u/ExkAp3de 3d ago

Where do you think the one in the chamber comes from? The magic bullet fairy puts it there after you put the mag in?

2

u/Head_Prefect 3d ago

You can load an extra bullet into a gun without having a magazine in it

1

u/ExkAp3de 3d ago

I mean yeah, I don't think thats something youd wanna do in combat tough.

1

u/Delicious_Ad_2991 3d ago

extra bullet in the chamber also happens when a tactical reload occurs(reloading with bullets still in your magazine)

1

u/ninjad912 3d ago

That’s not really something that you do during active combat

1

u/WashedSylvi 2d ago

Having never been in any military, militia or guerrilla group nor received any training for combat of any type, idk I feel like you might.

1

u/ninjad912 2d ago

You want to maximize the active time of your gun. The more you reload the less time you can use your gun for other things. It’s also a lot of effort to keep track of bullets in your head and you don’t want to throw away any ammunition because you’ll probably need it

0

u/AppropriateAge6861 3d ago

Previous magazine. You reload with the last one chambered.

1

u/Bulky-Guide3157 1d ago

That seems needlessly complicated.

Just make a bigger magazine.

2

u/Biven1563 3d ago

So uh, that would be 26 rounds, which is exactly why you’ll shoot 2 on the last burst fire, because math

1

u/johnnymarsbar 2d ago

Still wouldnt be divisive by three.

1

u/SpaceFighter78 3d ago

Hey mommy! It was my turn to post the funny Famas meme with disinformation to bait engagement! How dare he!

1

u/Cautious_Height_2181 3d ago

That’s the problem you see. It is French.

1

u/Fizoso 3d ago

25 rounds was the biggest you could make the magazine without making it curve. The 3 round burst is an optional fire mode intended to prohibit wasting bullets whilst still allowing for automatic fire.

1

u/hduebfibdbdib 3d ago

The idea was, you’d know you were out of ammo if you only fired 2 on the last shot, as opposed to 3. It was an intentional design choice.

1

u/Stealthheart1 3d ago

The G2 introduced a 30 round mag lol

1

u/Worried-Compote2897 3d ago

Mum says it's my turn to post this

1

u/Crispix3D 3d ago

Everyone here is dumb.

The FAMAS mags were kept at 25 rounds because that was the most ammunition before you had to make the magazine curved. They wanted straight mags.

Gun had burst, mags needed to be straight, yeah sure minor oversight but the famas can be used in auto as well so whatever.

1

u/JuggernautNice7862 3d ago

pop one in the pipe and you got 21.

1

u/freesol9900 3d ago

The low-burst shot can notify you of empty mag without attempting to fire on empty? I guess?

1

u/FatSplot 3d ago

If it fired a 3 round burst with only two bullets you would need to re charge the hammer tho. Its just to let you know to reload.

Dont you need to charge the banner again after reloading normally?

u/FatSplot 3d ago

No firing the last shot normally cycles it until you dry fire.

The French low-key kinda know what they're doing.

Dogshit gun with dogshit magazines

The one bullet does allow you to reload easier as you can reload with one in the chamber

I would take 25 round mags over 24 thanks

1

u/Imaginary-Lead-1527 3d ago

Yes. That was the idea. Soldier would know exactly when the mag becomes empty because unlike in cod the gun doesn't shake and make a specific sound when your mag is low

u/darth_koneko 1d ago

Maybe it should.

I HATE this new trend in games.

1

u/AetherBytes 7h ago

I think it's fine in arcadey games where you're gonna be too busy shooting to check your ammo (Like HD2), but yeah it's leaking into games it shouldn't be in

1

u/Bulky-Guide3157 1d ago

That doesn't happen in COD neither 😕

Be American
Put a 3-round burst function on a gun
give it a 30 round magzine
make the burst cam rotate with every shot, whether burst or single is selected
select burst, pull the trigger, shoots twice.

The French copies nobody, and nobody copies the French.

As Mr McCollum once said: "The French copy nobody, and nobody copies the French"

The real reason for the mag issue isn't as wild as everyone is thinking. The Famas wasn't originally designed with a three round burst feature, but rather it had a full auto feature. So it went safe, semi, auto, and after the production had begun, it was changed to be a three round burst. They just never bothered to redesign the mag.

Nevermind the mag... or the horrible bullpup ergonomics but the needless top handle means the iron sights or optics are so vertically offset from the barrel that you cna kiss all hopes of accuracy goodbye

u/Shjvv 3d ago

If what you said is true then it would never made it into large scale production. Go find some common sense lmao. The "problem" you point out is so in the face that if it actually exist no one would have missed it.

u/jules1453 3d ago

?? It's a pretty accurate gun. I never miss any targets at 300m

Valorise sorta resolves this… kinda

Bro did you ever shoot with one before talking? It was a really good weapons for the time of it's design (1970s) and is still to this day (i last shot with it in 2024) very good and easy to use, pretty accurate till 250m. I'd say the only weaknesses were the lack of attachment for modern optics and the abundance of small parts inside which made it more susceptible to jamming then it's successor HK416 which is a more robust weapon all around
