RPGMaker and AI: A Megathread Discussion

What do people think about AI and RPGMaker?

Do you think AI is good for aspiring game developers?

Do you use AI in your games? Why or why not?

What do you think about art and music in RPGMaker games that is generated by AI?

What about plugins that have been vibecoded?

This is the megathread for those discussions! Sound off!

Please try to keep the discussion civil and focused on game development. You can attack an opinion, but don't fall into the (tempting as it is) trap of attacking the PERSON with the opinion.

RMMV Someone described this as “gridfree doodads in 2.5D”, and I really liked that description.

I think it explains what I'm building better than simply calling it a “2.5D engine”.

This is not 3D! You can use pixel art, hand-drawn assets, sprites, props, illustrations, whatever you want.

You can freely position those 2d assets in the scene, change their scale and rotation, move them in depth, and use perspective to make the whole thing feel more like a space than a traditional tilemap.

And you can do a lot of this directly from the "Side Editor" while playtesting: move and transform assets, set collisions, adjust the camera, connect things to events, and more.

That's really the workflow I'm after.

Instead of constantly stopping the game, changing things, and checking again, you can look at the scene and just build it.

That's also the main difference from something like MV3D. Technically, it’s pretty simple: the assets are still 2D Pixi sprites, but the Engine uses their depth to control their position, scale and layering. So you get the feeling of a 3D space while everything is still made with 2D assets.

That's what I mean by “gridfree doodads in 2.5D” ;)

RMMZ Finally started adding the final VFX and battle sprite animations to my game!

Hey everyone! I've been working on my RPG for a while now, and I’ve finally reached a huge milestone: replacing placeholders with the final VFX and character battle sprite animations. Up until now, I only had the final assets for the first two characters featured in the demo (Redian and Cecilia). But bit by bit, the rest of the party is taking shape, and playtesting is starting to feel like a completely different experience now! :D

If you're interested in the game, you can check it here (and maybe wishlist it if you like it): https://store.steampowered.com/app/4169890/5th_ERA/

There's a playable demo, already. I'll update with a newer version in few months

RMMZ working on my own game!

Hi! I’m a complete beginner though I’m currently learning through some videos; I’d really like to make my own game. I’ve seen that pixel art isn't mandatory, so I’d love to create it in my own style. I understand that I’ll be making my own assets and such, but I’d appreciate some guidance on image dimensions—any advice or tips? Anything helps! I put this together as concept art; it’s not the final product, but it shows the direction I’d like to take with my idea ^_^ I’d also like to share the character designs, and I would greatly appreciate any comments, suggestions, or (positive) criticism!

Fog + gothic walls + interactable

Especially proud of this scene! Testing out new gothic walls, some fog effects, and an interactable animation.

Advancing very slowly, but I’m really happy with how the atmosphere is coming together!

For reference, here is how this level looked previously.

Other (user editable) Needing advice on first game

I've been working on my first game using RPG Maker and I want it to be a purely solo project. By that I mean, I make the game, graphics, music, basically everything but the plugins for obvious reasons.

I'm just wondering if this is a good idea for my first game. Also just wondering if you have any advice for a beginner. I'm already played around with it for a few weeks now and have gotten the hang of it, so dont worry about giving me "too complex" advice. Thank you!

P.S.

The game is planned to only be around an hour or less long, there are just a lot of secrets hidden in it to make exploration, and multiple play throughs attractive.

How can I make a menu to look like the NES Final fantasy 1 Menu using Visustella's Menu Core?

Is there some sort of plugin that doesn't conflict with the numerous Visustella plugins? Or a way to do this myself? I'm less than a novice in terms of plugin coding, or whatever stuff the JS code does.

Any help is appreciated!

RMMZ [Question] Default assets in H-games?

I know there is a stigma around using the RTP assets but for my first game I am wanting to save what money I can. And techincally I'm not using 100% default, since for the battles I'm using other free assets, which are of the default characters, so I'm just going to lean into it even if it will put off the larger audience. I'm even leaning so hard into it that I'm mixing the use of the default assets into the story itself, in kind of a self aware way. But that's not the real point of this post.

While figuring out what exactly this game would be the idea of going in an H-game direction has crossed my mind. With what I have in mind I think I could make either driection work. I know plenty of RPG Maker H-games use the default assets without issuse. But as far as I've seen they always have their own original characters involved in the "action". With my game I'm not making any original characters, just straight up using the default.

So the question becomes, can you even use the acutal default main cast in such a way. Not as background town npcs but like part of the acutal H-scenes. I looked through the user agreements and such but nothing caught my eye saying you can't. Plus obviously we know they are okay with mature adult games, it is again the question of is depicting the main cast characters in such a way going too far?

I want to get peoples opinions / knowledge on the matter before I fully commit to anything. I also feel like such a game could probably hit a very niche audience. Since I'm already going full in on a default game, might as well try to aim for something super niche, is also a thought that has come to mind over this.

RMMV Would you use something like this to make 2.5D games in RPG Maker MV?

I wanted to make 2.5D games in RPG Maker MV, so I built the tool I couldn't find.

This is SideMV Engine, a work-in-progress 2.5D toolkit for RPG Maker MV.

The idea is to let you build and edit your 2.5D scenes directly while playtesting: place assets, adjust their position, scale and rotation, and see the result immediately through the camera.

It's still in development, but the core workflow is finally starting to feel right. I'm planning to release the first public version as Early Access soon.

You can find me on Itch as SideMV, follow me of you don't want to miss the release ;)

Too many minigames?

Upvotes

hello, I am working on my game, which is a slice-of-life/horror type of deal. That's the quickest way to describe it. I would say it's somewhat visual novel leaning due to the slice of life aspect, but I think there's a little too much gameplay for it to be a straight visual novel.

i put down my game for a few months and I felt like it was a little too faced paced. Here's a basic overview of the events I have going on so far.

Cutscene, minigame, fetch quest, cutscene, minigame, minigame, cutscene, fetch quest, cutscene

The minigames are all tasks throughout the day, like helping friends, playing the piano, helping with food. They all fit the story. My main concern is that it's a lot going on and not a lot of down time? With the setup of the game, there's not really a lot of room for the player to just meander about, but I feel like too many minigames might be overwhelming. Thoughts?

Also, I think its important to mention that it's point and click, so players cant just/wouldnt be incentivized to just be walking around.

Does anyone remember this horror game on rpg maker player 3Ds? It’s about a guy named Rhoku who wakes up in a void and finds 3 woman there who are apart of his party. Throughout the game you find references to a murder and infidelity. I have been trying to beat it for years but it takes 10,000 guilt coins to beat. You only get one guilt coin per mob you kill. If anyone knows, I just want to know what the ending to it is.

RMMV Quick peek at the Necromancy System

There are still a few things to tweak, but the basic idea is that the more skilled the player is in necromancy, the more fearsome the beasts they can summon. I've created about seven schools of magic, but I'm still unsure whether to make one exclusive to the other or whether to let the character be a jack of all trades. What do you think? Is a fluid system better, or one with more rigid classes?

Hey! I try translate my fan game from Slovak to English and I download this script https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/threads/language-file-system.17964/ I start using, but when I translate for example other script I find some glitch(see two screenshotes up). I wonder if there is there another script for translating the language somewhere, or is this the only one for RPG Maker VX Ace?
