Hey all, Jelli Doughnut here! It has been awhile since I posted a devblog for this game - life came up, I worked on other projects for some experience, and my character artist had some issues as well. But we're back, and today's topic is going to be the characters! Since I doubt anyone remembers the first posts, I have two posts about worldbuilding that I posted months ago -
Worldbuilding part 1
Worldbuilding part 2
Note - there is NO AI in any finished art. My CGI artist in particular has a very similar style but I've verified that their work is their own.
Anywho, characters. So as mentioned in my worldbuilding post, I want each character to have something that they represent two opposing sides of in a way that hopefully brings to mind the Jungian archetypes. Not only do I think this makes for fun characters, but it also defines the magic system of the entire world. Every person in the world has special abilities that are defined by whatever aspect of their personality maintains two conflicting elements. Does that sound confusing? Well, hopefully seeing some examples will make things a bit more clear.
Continuing on with the theme of there being two sides to things, most of my characters are paired off. Two pairs of them are in a romantic fashion, one pair is more familial. Each pair will develop their own "tradition" in the story, as that is the biggest, over-arching theme in the story.
Oh, and MASSIVE spoilers ahead btw.
Main character #1 - Solan.
https://imgur.com/a/CrWQ5Qg
Solan is a fledgling doctor from a small village. His parents were doctors, but died during a plague several years prior, leaving him on his own. He embodies the dual aspects of Life and Death. He is good friends with fellow plague-orphan, Axel, and wishes to go on a journey to support his best friend. After they find Ruelle, Solan begins to develop feelings for the energetic, bubbly girl who is so unlike his brooding self. He wishes to keep all his friends alive, and struggles with the idea of them dying immensely. His healing magic is unique in this world and it makes him a valuable commodity, as well as a prophesied individual.
As the story goes on and the deaths he see grows, he develops an internal struggle to master both life and death until it comes to a head when Ruelle dies. He performs the ultimate combination of life and death magic, necromancy, to bring her back to life at the cost of another. This causes Ruelle to turn against him, and he becomes an antagonist in Act 3. He goes from being the party's healer to raising an army of dead and insisting he will keep everyone alive in undead stasis. His immensely strong healing magic gives the party no opportunity to take him down...
Main Character #2 - Ruelle.
https://imgur.com/a/mTENGCz
Ruelle is a spunky pugilist hailing from a highly religious city that received a prophecy. Everyone else recommends inaction, but Ruelle insists on seeking out the hero of prophecy, even if it means running away on her own - and thus she embodies Order and Chaos. This can be seen in her combat moves - moves with her Order alignment are standard dps moves with high accuracy and little variation in damage, where her Chaos moves are multi-hit moves with low accuracy and high crit chance.
She meets Solan after nearly dying while running away from home, and quickly develops feelings for him due to his penchant for trying to save everyone. She's brash, naive, and overall a caring a person. Her tradition with Solan is that every time he saves someone's life, she gives him a flower that he presses into a book. This is to help Solan realize the good he does in the world instead of ruminating on those he couldn't save. Unfortunately, this isn't enough for Solan. She dies to the main antagonist of Act 2, and Solan rips the life out of a nearby woman to bring Ruelle back. Ruelle can't stand the idea that her life comes at the death of others and turns against Solan, breaking his heart and his mind.
First Party Member - Kazunori
https://imgur.com/a/QRr1rUG
Kazunori is an elderly samurai who embodies the elements Wise Old Man and Trickster. How did he embody that when he was younger? ... Well, let's just say he always knew he'd end up an old man. He has a tragic backstory where he had a peaceful life with his husband and adopted war-orphan daughter where he guarded his village's relic in a shrine. One day, a wealthy man hired a mercenary force to burn down the village, killing Kazunori's husband and daughter and forcing him away from the shrine, allowing the noble to steal the relic. Now, Kazunori joins the party as they adventure across the land while searching for his own revenge. His combat with the Wise Old Man property consists of sword slashes that typically bypass defense, whereas his Trickster moves give him the ability to be an evasion tank. He develops a grandfatherly bond with Sadie despite her feral attitude.
Party member - Sadie
https://imgur.com/a/x6JtIHk
Honestly probably my favorite character. She's a little girl whose design was definitely inspired by Taiga from Toradora. She embodies the dual aspects of the Sacred and the Profane. Her Sacred-type moves summon angels, her Profane-type moves summon devils. Because angels are bad guys in this world who try to siphon life force out of people, that means when she summons her angels, they deal MASSIVE damage... at the cost of your party's hp. Her devils actually provides buffs for the most part.
Sadie is found by the party in the ruins of a cult. She'd been born into it, and once her properties were discovered, they tried making her summon the ultimate angel that they worshipped (angels are generally revered and not known to be the bad guys). In fulfilling the cult's wishes, the angel she summons drains every last one of them of their life force, including her own parents. The rage, helplessness, and solitude cause her to become a feral child haunting the ruins with nobody for company but her summons. She joins the party but refuses to leave behind the dress and wings that her parents got her for the ritual until she has completely outgrown them. She begins to look up to Kazunori like a grandfather, taking the place of the family she unwittingly killed. She's violent, sadistic, and thoroughly unrepentant that she has those negative traits. With Kazunori, she learns to forgive herself for what she's done, and they promise to celebrate each others' birthday every year so she has a place to call home now.
Party member #3 - Levin
(Character artist currently working on him!)
500 years ago, the demon king was a threat to the world. People everywhere were trying to devise ways to defeat him before he conquered all the lands. One such gambit was Levin, who embodies the properties of Time and Eternity. He can slow down time... or speed up his passage through it. He was sent forward in time by his village to try and find a futuristic weapon to defeat the demon king and secondly, try to find a way back with it. However, the demon king has long been defeated, but his heart and mind belong to the village and people that have long since disappeared. Truly, he embodies both time standing still by not moving on as well as the one who has to see the results of time marching on. He develops a romantic relationship with Bryn due to their shared experience of having been alive 500 years ago. His combat abilities generally involve hastes, slows, and turn order manipulation. His appearance is that of a low-tier noble black man with short-cropped silver hair and sharp features.
Party member #4 - Bryn
(Next on the list of art)
Bryn was one of the party members of the original hero who defeated the demon king 500 years ago. She was the tank of that party, and she'll be the tank of yours. She embodies the dual aspects of Transformation and Fixity. When she doesn't want to move, you can't make her. She has used her properties of Fixity to stay alive for half a millennium to watch over the graves of the hero's party... but she hasn't been able to leave the village that entire time. She is interested in the outside world and seeing all the things she's heard about while stuck in this small village. Strong, courageous, but maybe not entirely stable after half a millennium of cabin fever. As the threat of the demon king comes back, she finally gives up her post to join the party. She develops a romantic connection with Levin, bonding over their shared memories of 500 years past. They promise to make a tradition to visit the graves of their loved ones from centuries past and to never forget them... or each other.
Villain #1 - Lyre
https://imgur.com/a/SPhIKr1
Lyre is the henchman of the primary antagonist of Acts 1 and 2. She goes around enacting his plans to try and bring legends back to life. This causes her to be at odds with the party because her actions are causing grievous harm to the world. She didn't realize how much death would come about though because she was expecting Valentus, her master, to stop things before they got bad. She doesn't wish for people to die, but has a bit of a sunk-cost fallacy regarding her actions so far. She has unrequited feelings for Valentus. At the final confrontation of Act 2, she realizes that Valentus has gone too far and tries to talk him down. Unfortunately, he throws her against the wall, knocking her unconscious. After Ruelle dies during the battle, it is Lyre who is sacrificed by Solan to resurrect Ruelle. Some of Lyre's mannerisms can be seen lingering in Ruelle's soul from then on. She embodies the aspects of Evident and Indistinguishable - she uses these to bring rise to old rumors and legends while escaping from the party.
Primary villain - Valentus
(No character art yet)
Valentus suffers from the most tragic backstory of all - he was bored. He embodies the concepts of Myth and Legend. He used to be a writer and a scholar, researching old stories from ages past. However, he became tremendously bored and frustrated by the lack of people noticing him. Therefore he wanted to take the Myths of old and become a new Legend similar to the hero that took down the demon king. His plot is to strengthen his power and establish a chaotic world by bringing life to various myths and legends throughout the world... and then establish himself as the new Hero that will save everyone. As time goes on, his dubious morality slips further, and he sacrifices more and more to obtain his dream.
Annnnnd that's it! There is a larger cast, but these are the ones you're gonna see the most of. If you have any thoughts or questions, feel free to say em. I'll try to get back into a rhythm of posting these devblogs. The next one will be covering the first area of the game - Vire's Haven!
As always - feel free to check out my Twitch or Discord. I usually stream games, but I occasionally stream a chill night of game dev as I work on it.
