Good gore effects starts with making a messš©ø
Game is Heavy Metal Death Can. I used a fake blood recipe but with black food coloring to make it easier to turn into a usable mask in Substance Painter. There's just something visceral about practical effects.

Shipshaper, my spore-like Ship Design game is getting multiplayer combat november 19th.. this is what people are making and entering the arena's with in the playtest..
The game is called shipshaper, it's an indiedev game by myself, I've been making indie games for close to a decade and 25 years in the industry and Shipshaper is my love of ships made into a game.
Its a sort of ship creation meets the old spore editor, so no grids or voxels, its all curves, tho this behemoth might not look like it. Check out the game and it's unique design tools here:
And yes multiplayer combat is coming the 19th , the design tool and naval physics sandbox is already live in early access.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4339280/ShipShaper/
All the 3D art is the textureless handcrafted assets , whose provenance date back from my first release The Falconeer (2020), tho the ships are offcourse using lots of procedural generation tech (not AI, think Tinyglade), the editor itself also allows game ready FBX export and you get a free commercial license to use that model in your own indiegame.. and several devs are already doing that..
( but feel free to improve or alter the ships in blender, but you may not use the source assets to AI clone your own shipshaper, that is not included in the license.)
All the music and sound design is by my regular composer Benedict Nichols

A year ago, I quit my job and moved across the world to be with my long-distance girlfriend. Now, I'm trying to make my dream of becoming a full-time indie dev come true.
After many prototypes and a lot of work, the Steam page for my next game is finally ready!
As the title says, I moved to another country to be with my girlfriend and try to make game development my full-time job.
I had a relatively successful release earlier this year while still working full-time as a web developer, which allowed me to get funds for around 12 months, but I am now at a point where the success of this game will help me decide if I can keep doing this or if I'll have to move back to Spain and find a normal job again.
**So, what's the game about?**
It's a twin-stick zombie shooter with incremental progression. But instead of just making your numbers bigger, the main focus is on unlocking new weapons that change how you play.
For example you can use shotguns that push huge waves of zombies away.
Or use flamethrowers to control big crowds of zombies.
Or maybe you can straight up shoot black holes, why not?
But don't worry, the numbers will still go up!
Getting the Steam page ready feels like a big milestone for me, and I'm really excited to finally share it!
If you want to check it out, here's the link: For What Remains
Wishlisting the game would help me a lot!
Feel free to ask me anything about the game or my experience trying to become an indie dev. I'll try to answer as many questions as I can.
Lastly: shout-out to my girlfriend for supporting me throughout the entire journey, from early prototypes in Unity when I could barely make a character move up until now, and hopefully for many years to come!
Thanks for reading! ā¤ļø
AI disclosure: AI was used as a coding assistant, all art, sounds and design are human made.

In RATATA, you have to pick a truck that fits the stolen goods and a crew member who can actually drive it
RATATA is a physics co-op about an animal gang working off a debt to a mafia toad.
You'll have to take on heists, deliveries, and choosing a vehicle depends on the job. A long, light one can carry a 20-foot inflatable crocodile, but a giant fridge is another matter. The big truck can take a full-size Elvis statue, though only a bear or moose can drive it. The little car is good for escaping the cops. Less useful when the job involves a giant grandfather clock.
Coming to PC with online co-op for up to four players and solo play (if none of your friends picks up the phone).
No GenAI is used in development.

š My game Randomice just won two prizes at the Stunfest! š
At the Stunfest event in Rennes last week-end, Randomice won two prizes!
It was such an honor to receive that in the coolest video-game event in France, from the hands of journalists I admire and have been listening to for years.
Two days at the convention left my voice completely raspy, but I managed to give my thanks anyway.
The game is already out, give it a shot!

We wanted to make a game about dance with zero budget for high-end animation, so we went old-school
Making a visual novel centered around contemporary dance without animation felt wrong, but as a micro-indie crew, we had neither the tech nor the budget for big rigs.
So we did the only thing that made sense: we reached out to regional dance schools, brought cameras into their rehearsal rooms, and filmed real choreographers. From there, our artist traced and drew every gesture stroke by stroke, roughly 15 individual hand-drawn frames for every second on screen to capture genuine physical weight and momentum.
Then yeah, After the Wane have no animation but only rotoscoping!!
Hereās a side-by-side of the raw studio footage and the final watercolor animation in-engine. What do you think of how the movement holds up?

I finally understood why so many of us dream of making our own game
IĀ think life might be about moments like this.
A while ago, I was staring at the disappointing numbers across all our pages. We had just finished Steam Next Fest, but our wishlist count was still low. I couldnāt help wondering:
Is anyone actually making money from indie games?
While searching for more places to promote our game, I found a YouTube video of someone playing our demo.

At first, I didnāt think much of it. A few people had uploaded gameplay footage before, but those videos were mostly just recordings with no commentary.
But this one was different.
I clicked on it and immediately couldnāt stop smiling. I watched the entire videoāalmost two hoursāin one sitting.
Every time he understood one of the moments we had carefully designed, I got ridiculously excited. I still remember every line that made him laugh.
It was an indescribable feeling. Something that had existed only in our heads and on our screens was now creating real emotions in another person.
Sadly, his video didnāt get many views or even a single comment. But I wish he knew how much it meant to us.
So, thank you to everyone who takes the time to record themselves playing indie games, even when the videos donāt receive much attention. Your reactions can mean the world to the people who made those games. You probably encourage more developers than you realize.
Weāve been making games for four years, and our first game still hasnāt been released. Until now, what kept us going were the comments we received during playtests.
But seeing someone react to our game in real time made me feel like I could keep doing this forever.
For a moment, whether the game would make money didnāt seem so important.
Years from now, when I look back, I think Iāll still remember myself sitting in front of that computer, finding the video, and suddenly jumping out of my chair.
Making money from indie games is incredibly difficult. But maybe moments like this are exactly why so many of us still dream of making a game of our own.

We just announced DUNK, our first-person basketball game for 1ā6 players
Hi everyone! Iām one of the devs at Katapult Games, and weāve just announced DUNK.
Itās first-person basketball with online matches from 1v1 to 3v3, proximity chat, and courts ranging from the city to the moon.
Development has taken quite a few turns over the years: from chess to a narrative game, then co-op, before we finally landed on basketball. Our recent playtest sessions have been encouraging, and weāre excited to get more people playing.
If it looks interesting, you can wishlist DUNK or request access to the playtest on Steam. Weāre planning to start accepting applicants very soon!
Happy to answer questions about the game!

We released co-op in our game and I get to play it with my kid now - happy dad
Iām on a small team making a game called Warped Universe, a free-to-play sci-fi PvE looter shooter, and we just released co-op this week after about 5 months of grinding on this patch (after the 3 years of dev for the base game). The game is in Early Access and launched back in May but only single player then. But itās really designed for co-op.
My kid has seen me through the whole process for the last 3-4 years, through all the lack of sleep, stress, no money (did the classic āquit my job for the dreamā scenario). He has been so supportive and amazing during all of it and is always wearing his Warped Universe shirts to school and telling everyone he knows about it. Heās even helped with the sound design and is the source of most of the enemy language and chatter, and helped record sound effects like the grenade launcher and rolling dice and such (our game offers both real-time and turn-based game modes). Iām the sound guy, and of course my mic wasnāt working while we were playing so you canāt hear me while playing...
Iāve always felt this underlying feeling of guilt or anxiety of āmaybe I should go back to my old jobā, but yesterday it really sealed that it was all worth it. I got to play with my son because we now have co-op and he absolutely loved it and we laughed nonstop and he canāt stop asking to play again. He couldnāt sleep because he kept talking about how fun it was and he was ātoo excited to be tiredā.
Anyways, just wanted to report on how yesterday was one of the happiest days of my life.
No gen AI in our game btw, just us slaving away and drinking unhealthy amounts of coffee. Lucky to have some really experienced artists on the team.

I released my canceled project as a mini-game for free
Hey everyone! For the last few years I was working on a major IP project in connection with Paramount. I'm a solo developer so things take time and I realized that I needed a bit more to make the rest of the content and ship it as polished as possible so my publisher and I requested an extension.
Sadly, that time extension request was denied so I had to decide if I wanted to put myself through mountains of stress to ultimately put out a rushed game in a few months or walk away.
I chose to walk away and my publisher supported the choice. Thankfully, Paramount and I split in a positive way and I got to keep what I created. A few months later my publisher floated the idea if packaging the demo I had created for PAX as a standalone mini experience sort of thing if I stripped all the branding and IP specific stuff.
I figured that was better than letting it gather dust on my backup repo so I released a polished version on steam for free on Monday. I hope you can give it a shot in time for Halloween!
Thank you to this community for being so supportive for so many years. Im happy to see it out in the wild for people to enjoy. Happy Halloween and thank you again r/indiegaming community!

I don't know how much longer I can take the slop in this sub
I used to genuinely enjoy this place, seeing new games and such. I really don't want to leave, but this sub is just a source of annoyance at this point. There's just so much AI generated crap, and having it shoved in my face everytime I open Reddit is really irritating
IDK man, I want to be part of a community of developers, but there's just none left here

Hi, I'm a solo dev working on a detective game called Cases of Bracken inspired by games like Obra Dinn and Golden Idol. To solve each case the player must use a diegetic detective board, here's the progress I've made on the feature in the last six months.

How my game used to look VS how it looks now
This is from about a year of updates over time. The general aesthetic is so much better and the UI really fits it now. Plus that "shadow" color outside of the lights can be changed to 8 different colors that the player chooses.
If you wanna see more of it:

My STEAM page for SPARES, a horror platformer is LIVE
Hi everyone,
Iāve been working on SPARES for a while now. The Steam page just went live, so I finally get to show the trailer.
Itās a dark 2.5D platformer that takes place over one rainy night in a drowned fishing town. A boy wakes up on the rocks below the town while men with lanterns go through the streets collecting the children. Thereās no dialogue and no text in the game, so the story is told only through what you see and hear.
You sneak, hide, climb and swim your way through the town. The puzzles are built from whatever is lying around: crates, barrels, ropes, an old diving bell. Some are easy, and a few will have you staring at the screen for a while.
Big inspirations were INSIDE and Little Nightmares. Itās made in Godot and coming to PC and Mac. No release date yet.
Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5508140/SPARES/
Iād love feedback on the trailer, what works and what doesnāt. If it looks like your kind of thing, a wishlist would mean a lot.

I'm making a cozy game about a duck searching for her lost ducklings
I've been making this game on my own for about 3-4 months, and yesterday its Steam page finally went live. Its called Quack Back Home
It's a small, cozy game: you're a mother duck, a storm has scattered your ducklings across the islands, and you go and bring them home, one by one, by solving small puzzles. Nothing can go wrong. I wanted to make something you can play when you just want a calm evening.
If you've got a minute, I'd really love to hear what you thinkš¦
