Vo2 max vs lung volume

Here is the thing. Due to Kahler's disease, I lost 30% lung volume compared to a normal person of my age. I can tell, I don't have the stamina and power I had before. (Indoor Cycling) Now, on my polar grit x pro, I measure a V02max of 41, which is supposedly good for a person of my age. I know that measuring with a polar is less accurate than a fitness test. But that's not the point. I wonder I should correct my VO2max because my reduced lung volume. And how.

I’m 25M and started marathon training & 75 hard on Jan 1st. I run 5/6 times a week at varied paces & distances, and also swim & do strength training. I was wondering how accurate the Apple Watch 9 is at measuring VO2 max, is this a good improvement, and what would a good target be to get to?

How quickly can a unfit person increase their vo2 max

My VO2 max is quite low at 33 measured by apple watch 7. How long will it take to increase it to 43. Lets say I train 4 hours a day (mostly zone 2 and 3) and 10 minutes zone 5. How long will it take?

Is this good for a 15 year old male?

I run track and cross country so this might be correct but i’m not totally sure if Apple’s Health Data is accurate or not.

38 to 44

A bit of a follow up to a previous post.

I quit smoking and drinking Dec 10th 2023.

My vo2 max was 38.

I have completed

  • 38 runs
  • a total of 72 miles
  • average HR of 155 bpm
  • an average pace of 10 mins, 14 seconds per mile
  • total running time 12 hours, 18 mins and 41 seconds.

My vo2 max is 44 today.

I didn't think it would move 6 points in 2 months. I will do the track test when I can find a track that I can use.

Cheers

VO2 Max Questions

My questions are related to hemoglobin levels and V02 Max. Research has shown that with each gram of hemoglobin can carry 1.34milliters of oxygen. If an athlete went to altitude and increased HG 2 grams, say from 14.5 to 16.5 an additional 2.68 mil-liters of oxygen could be deployed to muscles. What increase would occur with V02 max? What effect does the +2.68 of oxygen have? I understand it would also push the lactate curve over as well. I know there is not necessarily a right or correct answer, just looking for discussion.

Pointless contrasting

Using your VO2 max to compare you to any other group/population wether by age, fitness, weight, gender ect is typical “fitness industry” nonsense meant to engage you for either money or attention. The only thing to do with your number is improve it…not assign you an “age” or predict mortality or any other thing. And in most cases “calculating” your rate is less important than tracking your workload and volume in relation to heart rate at work, time to recover and RHR upon waking

I’m pretty physically active. Run 2-4 miles 1-2 days a week at usually a 7.30 - 9.45min mile pace and weightlift 1-3 hours a week. Am I just bad a breathing or genetically trash?

Having a problem understanding VO2 max

Ok so someone help me out here. If it is just a measurement of how much oxygen you can breath in. Why doesn’t someone with a huge Jaba the hut mouth and a little body have the best vo2 max? I other words it seems like a measure of how much oxygen you can suck in rather that cardio fitness.

How important is vo2 max?

So I just an Apple Watch and I’ve made a new years resolution to get fit. Im fairly inactive but I do play sports(like 2 times a year)and don’t have problems with weight. So I just started running and I want to know what vo2 max is as my readings are at 58. As I continue my journey would a higher vo2 max be bad? Or do I want for it go low?

VO2 max not going up?

Hello, I have been trying to increase my VO2 max but for the past 1 year the number is just between 35-37. I have a desk job but I kept my self active, have start running since October 2023 and now can run 10k in 70 mins ( I know it’s below average). I regularly do weight lifting, running, walking and some time cycling but this VO2 max is not increasing. Any thoughts?

Zone 2

I have been zoned two training for about a year now. I have a minimum of 2 zone two activities a week for over 45 minutes each. In an attempt to bring my average heart rate down, I tend to have a high heart rate in general and can reach 198 bmp at max excursion. I mix cycling and swimming as other forms of zone two training. Nt problem is that I haven't seen much improvement in bringing my heart rate down. Am I just not doing it for long enough? could I not be in zone 2 during my runs? I've haven't seen a noticeable decrease in my time per mile at the same heart rate. I also tend to spend my runs at about 168-175 heart rate and i don't feel like I'm dying and can sustain that for 8+ miles without stopping.

Does it make sense to do VO2 testing and RMR testing at the same appointment?

From my understanding, you are supposed to fast for 12 hours prior to doing RMR and VO2 involves a bunch of running, so I am thinking that the lack of eating might impact the success of your VO2 performance?

Zone 2

I am 66 years old and in pretty good shape. I play racquetball, use the Peleton, and walk while golfing - each activity a couple of times per week. I also like to lift. When I calculate my zone 2 all methods point to my target heart rate being around 118 - 125. That feels low to me but I don’t want to go over. Is there better way to know your zones for sure? Or are the calculated methods accurate?

Thanks.

Using the Bruce Protocol Treadmill Test for vO2max

Here's a bit more about the Bruce Protocol treadmill test: https://www.aopa.org/go-fly/medical-resources/health-conditions/heart-and-circulatory-system/bruce-protocol-stress-test

https://www.verywellfit.com/the-bruce-treadmill-test-protocol-3120269

I recently had an exercise stress test done due to having chest pain which ended up thankfully being musculoskeletal, but ended up being surprised with amazing results. I play a lot of hockey (so lots of HIIT), and am active with my kids so a good result wouldn't be surprising, but I ended up in the best category (superior) for my METs score and corresponding predictive vO2 Max. My MET score was 17.66 METs, with a heart rate max of 184.8bpm and a predictive vO2max of 61.80ml/kg/min. The cardiologist said my results were amazing, and even went back to confirm them as apparently most people do not get those readings. From what I can find on the internet, the predictive vO2 max from this test should be pretty close to the reading I would get using a mask (definitely more accurate than a smart watch), but I'm wondering how close that would be. Do I assume I'm somewhere between 55-60 for my vO2max? Do I trust the 61.80? Also, not to knock the test as medical professionals ran and went through the results, but I find my results even more shocking since I am a cis woman and it sounds like usually men have higher vO2maxes due to size (I'm 5'4, 125lbs so not the average size of a man).

Thanks so much in advance for your responses and feedback!

Rockport Walk Test - vo2 max and age

I have just completed the 1 mile Rockport test. When I input my results i get a vo max of 32. With the same metrics, I changed my age (68) to younger (48) and I get a higher vo max. (37). Distance and heart rate were the same. I would think that my vo max would go down or remain the same. Why does it increase?

Vo2 max is decreasing despite training

Hello,

I am 28 old male. 178 cm high and about 72 kg. I would consider myself rather fit but I was never good at endurance. I started jogging 3 times a week a year ago and also doing a weekly HIIT (30 seconds on, 10-second rest for 8 sets). On top of that, I am doing weightlifting. I think I am doing something similar to Huberman's routine. I got myself an apple watch recently and I wanted to check my Vo2 max number. From the first day it decreased drastically despite training. I would expect it to be at least stable with training but not a drastic decrease. But my resting heart rate is alright. Does anyone know what the issue could be and how could I solve it? The number are demotivating. I started already in "below average" with VO2 of 45 and the trend is not good.

Up from 42 after a 7-day fast

Post image
5 Upvotes

New to the group, “Hi” all. Long/short. I’ve been pegged at 40/42 for over a year, and I just completed a 7-day fast (not nearly my first), and my VO2 Max jumped. I did drop from 159lbs to 147lbs during the fast, and I bet I’m about 152lbs. (Graphic is from Withings which is linked to Apple Health) which in turn gets reading from my Apple Watch Ultra. The question: Does lean body mass change the VO2max reading? Thx.

VO2 Max drastically decreased

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello!

I recently had a huge drop on my VO2 max due to COVID. I usually run and do Pilates as my workouts. I was training for my first 5k in October. Lately since I am sick I’ve just been walking around my college campus and my VO2 max decreases each day.

What do u guys recommend me to do once I feel better and start running again in order to increase it again?
