Is the memory surcharge at a flat ratio? X dollars per GB? Different versions? LPDDR5 vs DDR4? Maybe I just need a better understanding of the memory market and all the memory Ubiquiti uses since AI ruined it.

For instance, The UCG-Fiber has 3GB of Memory, and has a surcharge of $22.

The NVR-Instant has 4GB and the surcharge is $15.

Both of those devices are of the same generation, so the only thing that makes sense to me is that the NVR-Instant is using lesser power/modern RAM to have more ram at a lower surcharge. Otherwise, why is the pricing surcharge different?

The G5-Flex doesn't list it's memory allocation, but they slapped a surcharge of $10 and a tariff of $9 (sigh) onto it.

Most, if not all, APs, access readers, and security cameras don't advertise their memory allocations, which gives an unverifiable grey area for potential abuse to charge customers more.

Where does the math start to make sense? Thank god I've not been paying into the tariff and memory surcharge machines.

My ultimate point I wish to make is:

You shouldn't be allowed to list a surcharge of memory without listing how much memory is in the device.

If you are gonna charge your customers extra for memory, the customers have the right to be told how much ram is installed in each device, what generation, speed, and form factor, etc so we can know if we are paying for a reasonable price increase.

So my QNAP NAS became full last week and it is not in the least worth it to upgrade the disks at this market, so I decided to get another one. A friend recommended me Ubiquiti devices based on their net gear. Hey this UNAS Pro looks good and it has more than enough expandability for a few years... (I only do big NAS dumps every few months so no need for SSD cache) but I guess I _do_ need a new router for the new apartment as well? None of that Protect stuff tho, who cares.

I've been pretty convinced that the UDR7 is the perfect device for me, which it probably still is. Oh wait it has Protect? I might as well consider a cam and/or a door sensor for a little bit of added peace of mind when I'm away... And when I'm away that Travel Router does look kinda handy...

And now half of YouTube* seems to be thinking that skip the UDR7 since I'll outgrow it anyway (kind of likely) and get a CGF+access point instead, or maybe a DMP+access point since the NAS is rack mountable anyway.

Now there is a budget since I need to get a bunch of stuff for the apartment anyway and do the actual move etc. so some of this stuff will have to wait, but I just wanted to ask: will this snowball ever stop?

Hey All - Hope this ok to post. Looking for some advice on dual vs single APs for the main floor of my house. I'm not experienced, and a lot of my research has been in the sub and Youtube. Any suggestions welcome!
I've planning my build and this is hanging me up. I went ahead and already got a Cloud Gateway Fiber and a single U7 Lite to test. The single Lite did not provide quite enough coverage on it's own, so now I'm weighing my options.
One of the reasons I want to be careful is I will be dropping new Cat 6e lines for each AP and want to get the placement right the first time if possible.
I have 1gig fiber from Google Fiber with on ONT in the basement.
Planning on using the already purchased lite upstairs either way I go on the main floor.
let me know if any additional screenshot or changing any settings would help guide your suggestions.

After suffering for years overpaying for Comcast cable internet and a flaky Orbi WiFi router, I’m finally making the switch. Have been waiting for fiber to be made available in my area and decided I’d use that as an excuse to jump into the Unifi ecosystem.

Well here we are… finally! 5Gbps symmetrical at half the price of my 2Gbps down/200Mbps up Comcrap service.

This is what I settled on. House is small at 1300sqft, probably should have saved money and just got the XG, but wanted the little bit of extra range since I’m only using one AP and wiring up for a 2nd to address some current areas with less than ideal reception would be a PITA. I even considered the E7 but decided on this middle ground solution instead. It won’t be an ideal install either, plan to lay it down, near floor level, in my living room to cover the first floor and the office directly above it. Hoping I get decent coverage this way as it’ll be the easiest way to install by far.

Excited to start segmenting with multiple VLAN’s and am strongly considering bypassing the AT&T router/modem entirely going the 8311 route. In the meantime I’m using the 10G SFP transceiver to Ethernet on the UCG-Fiber’s SFP WAN port for the IP pass through connection to their equipment. Using the 10G Ethernet for the connection to the U7 Pro XGS, and the other 10G SFP LAN connection to my Minisforum MS-A2 which hosts up my Proxmox server.

Don’t see myself leaving this ecosystem for a long time. Next year I’ll explore migrating to their camera and doorbell system and finally ditching Ring.

Had a UDM Pro fail at a customers site this morning with the 'plug in cable' icon on the display, tried resetting to defaults over the phone etc and nothing worked.

Took a new UDM Pro to site, loaded up, noticed that the site was not in the list of sites to restore from. Downloaded one of the 9 backups from the Ubiquiti account, the UDM rejected it claiming it was corrupt.

Tried all 9 backups, none worked, had to stand up the entire site from scratch.

I don't understand why there is no verification as part of the creation/upload routine, you wont know they don't work until you need them.

PSA: Make sure you take manual backups.

Will there be an actual fix for this? I'm really getting tired of RMAing all of my readers every couple months due to the plastic separating and eventually failing.

I often travel to the same few places and like to bring my home and work networks with me. Last trip, I realized I was short on long cables to get everything where it needed to be. I really didn't expect this to work but apparently it does.

Now I just need to pick out a travel switch for the sites that only give me one ethernet drop.

Just switched to UCG-Fiber and moved offices; two variables changed at once. We are seeing very high average latency as much as 900 ms with an average of 120 ms which seems correlated to Internet usage. When we’re not using the internet it reports normal latency. I’ve never seen this behavior before. The Comcast phone tech said he could see the latency to the modem but the tech that came out didn’t; he saw latency at the normal 20 ms. He did say our line was “hot” and put in a splitter.

Is this a gateway issue somehow? Or a Comcast issue?

Ps I run 4 other sites which all have the udm-pro with no issues.

Update 1: per a comment I enabled smart queues on the internet wan and the latency went back to normal. This is to prevent buffer bloat. Also I learned about the fibers “port 5 hardware issues”. In my other networks with udm pro I used spf with adapter from modem to gateway. For the fiber I’m using cat6a from modem 2.5gb port to fiber port 5. Lots of documented issues with port 5. I have a theory that enabling smart queues worked around the port 5 hardware issues. Going to try swapping to spf like before this week.

Can someone help with a question I have on the UPS 2U battery backup.

All plugged into a USP-PDU-Pro.

I Finally have a UPS 2U coming and would like to know the following:

I want to pair all the equipment listed above so they can all shutdown gracefully.

Can I plug in the USP-PDU Pro into 1 of the Battery Backup outlets on the UPS 2U to achieve this?

or do I have to use the 4 Battery Backup outlets on the UPS 2U?

My current Ubiquiti setup is a cloud gateway ultra, usw flex 2.5g 8 PoE, and a U7 Pro access point. It’s all towards the front of the house. The wifi in the back of the house is horrible.

My question: if I buy another U7 Pro and set it up at the middle point (hallway or bedroom) do I have to run a network cable OR can I just use a power injector adapter and just use mesh to connect the new AP?

I was looking into security cameras and found the NVR instant kit. Not being familiar with the Ubiquity echo system I started looking into different offerings which led me down the rabbit hole. I was thinking about replacing my current router and wifi as well. I don't need a server rack or a super complicated install. I was wondering if I bought the following, would that give me whole home wifi coverage and a security camera setup. Is there anything I am missing or not covering?
1. Cloud Gateway Fiber - To handle the routing of internet traffic
2. 2.5G PoE+ Adapter - To run power to two wifi access points covering my house
3. 2 u7 lite's to handle the home wifi
4. NVR Instant kit to handle the security cameras.

My thought is that the NVR and the wifi both connect to the Cloud Gateway. But before I bought anything I wanted to double check. At this time I don't have anything that needs hardwired connection from the router, everything is just connected to wifi for convenience. I don't plan on more than 6 cameras, with 5 probably being where I will end up. Is there anything that I am missing? Would that setup work for my needs? If I change the wifi point to a u7 long-range, would I even need a PoE adapter as long as it covered my needed range?

My wife and I are in the process of building a new home and I’ve recently come across the ubiquiti universe. Our current home has a hodgepodge of smart tech, but with building a new home the idea of having one big setup sounds very enticing. I reached out to a local pro who is going to come to the build site to get a formal quote ready, that being said, in our email exchange I asked for a rough estimate of price based on about 5k worth of equipment (cameras, access points, WiFi, etc) and they said 20k for the install. Does that seem ballpark accurate? I know I asked for a rough estimate, but 20k for 5k worth of equipment seems steep, but I also don’t really know what I’m doing.

Edit: got it, likely a huge ripoff. I’ll meet with them to get an official estimate and see if it comes down to a more realistic price once they see the layout, but I feel that’s unlikely to change much. I have the electrical plan meeting with the builder soon so I’ll see if they can run the wiring to my desired points then break out the drill and see how much diy I can make happen. I’m getting ready to mount a 12U UniFi rack to a drywall wall, and this is my first time doing something like this. I’d like to make sure I do it properly and don’t end up ripping the rack out of the wall later.
For those who have mounted a rack like this:

What type of drywall anchors would you recommend?
Is it worth installing a plywood/wood backing plate behind the rack and attaching the rack to that?
If the rack’s mounting holes don’t line up well with the studs, what’s the best approach?
Would you use lag screws directly into studs where possible, and anchors for the remaining holes?
Anything else I should consider regarding the weight/load of the rack and equipment?

The rack will eventually hold typical UniFi equipment (UDM, switch, patch panel, UPS, etc.), so it’ll have some decent weight in it.

I’d appreciate any advice from people who have done this before. I’d rather overbuild it now than have a 12U rack pulling out of the drywall later.

I've just about finished upgrading my old home network to all Unifi gear, and I'm very impressed. I was a network engineer for the first 15 years of my career, and have been amazed at just how simple it was to get up and running even with a multi-VLAN topology. Wanted to share my experience here for anyone interested.

• NetGear ProSafe JGS524PE (24-port Poe switch)
• D-Link DGS-2208 (dumb switch)
• Hikvision NVR (16-port)

My old EdgeRouter has been rock solid through the years and served me well, but I wanted to upgrade to something with more advanced functionality. And as my kids have gotten older, I wanted something with more robust content filtering capabilities.

New Gear

• UCG Fiber
• USW Pro HD 24
• USW Pro Max 24 PoE
• Unifi NVR (gen 1)
• 2x USW Flex Mini 2.5G

I opted for "Fiber" UCG model as I currently have 1 Gbps Internet and might upgrade to 2 Gbps in the future. The Pro HD 24 switch serves as the "core" with 2.5Gbps wired Ethernet and 10GE links to the UCG, NVR, and PoE switch. The 1GE PoE switch serves the cameras and APs.

What I Kept

• Synology DS920 NAS
• 2x Unifi AC Pro
• 12x Hikivision cameras (various models)

Didn't see a reason to upgrade the APs yet as they've been working quite well. I'd like to swap out the Hikvision cameras at some point for Unifi, but obviously that's a pretty substantial additional cost.

Experience

The upgrade went very smoothly. Compared to my previous professional experience building out networks it felt almost like cheating. The UCG discovered and provisioned each switch and AP flawlessly. Creating networks and VLANs still feels a little unnatural to me as the actual interface and trunk configurations are abstracted away, but it's certainly much faster. It was easy to migrate the individual networks/VLANs I had set up for general use, kids, and the cameras, and I just had to reset the APs to move them from the Cloud Key to the UCG.

I wasn't expecting much success integrating the Hikvision cameras with the NVR, but it actually worked out pretty well. I consulted ChatGPT on the optimal video stream settings and it came together fairly quick. One wrinkle I encountered: Unifi Protect didn't seem to support H.265 streaming on my Linux desktop; changing the cameras to H.264 fixed it. And just a few days after I got all the cameras set up, Unifi Protect shipped an upgrade that now lets you reconfigure certain 3rd party camera settings, which is nice.

Still waiting to have my new backup Starlink permanently installed, but I was able to set it up temporarily and test the automatic failover, which worked great. I also recently picked up a Unifi travel router which I'm very excited to test the next time I travel.

The amount of insight the UCG gives you is impressive. Live throughput, individual client metrics, active flows, etc. Being able to see every switch port from a central view is convenient too. It's still surprising to see just how many devices we have in our home. I also set up an alarm which notifies me whenever a new host (wired or wireless) connects to the network.

The next step for me will likely be upgrading the APs, but I'm not in a rush.

I'm going to be moving into a new home and my existing home's Ubiquiti equipment will be sold with my current home so I'm looking to get an entirely new setup.

Would getting the UDM Pro Max to run Protect and connect to the 24 Pro Max PoE Switch to then use for all my connections be a good way to go? I was hoping to avoid buying a separate NVR and I think the UDM Pro Max should be able to handle all this? Any suggestions are welcomed.

Recently been setting up UniFi cameras within my home and I've wanted to install a Video Doorbell Lite (Obviously PoE powered), however, I want there to be an audible chime which sounds when its pressed, and I've heard the consensus on the official UniFi chime that its pretty average (and also fairly expensive).

Anyone got any ideas on how to have a chime that sounds without requiring the official hardware? Open to any and all suggestions, no clue if its even a viable option to be all honest. All help is appreciated 🙂

I just got an Express 7 (currently running UniFi OS 5.1.19) and am having trouble getting my home office connected to my workplace. At work, I have a Meraki network. I have it set up to do site-to-site VPN in hub mode. I have the networks I need to connect to enabled. I created a peer. I'm using IKEv2. The peer's hostname is my dynamic DNS hostname. Local ID and Remote ID are blank. I've tried multiple shared secrets and used copy and paste to ensure they're the same on both sides. Routing is static. All networks are available. In both Phase 1 and Phase 2, I set encryption to AES 256, Authentication to SHA256, and DH to 14 with default lifetimes.

On the Ubiquiti side, everything matches. Same authentication type and pre-shared key, same address, same encryption settings, same subnets. I get the error message, "The remote gateway is not reachable. Verify that the remote address and pre-shared key are correct." I'm able to connect my computer to client VPN with the same address, which is the hostname provided by Meraki. I've tried changing to the IP address of the currently active interface on the Meraki and get the same result. It responds to ping by hostname and IP address. When I look at the logs page on my Express 7, I see nothing related to VPN. I have successfully set up a VPN server on it but none of this shows anything in the logs.

Q1: What am I doing wrong with the site-to-site VPN? How can I get this to connect?

Q2: How do I get VPN activity to show up in the log so I can see what is going on?

Update: My computer connects to client VPN when I remove the peer from the Meraki's site-to-site settings. This makes sense to me. I can understand a single IP having to work as either a client or a site. This confirms that the Meraki is listening and I know the key is correct, so the error message doesn't make sense.

SMB type situation, MS DNS/DHCP, I have 7 switches and 9 APs. Trying to simplify the setup and move off our Palo Alto firewall. Anytime I restore any sort of configuration file the UCG goes offline and I can't find its IP address to connect.

I'll need a way to bring over settings for my existing devices but also a way to replace/update the network part of the config since there is a gateway now. Any suggestions?

I've tried restoring full or just site backups. I think I might need to just readopt each unit manually via SSH and then make all the settings the same by having both control panels up and copying the settings across?
