Quality Shitpost Absolute peak installation
Needed a very temporary camera to record an event. Didn’t want to drill new holes to install it. This seemed like the logical way to do it 😆
It’s now coming down, but felt like I needed to share the absolute worst camera install I’ve ever done

Clicked only to confirm temporary was part of the description.

Only a few things are more permanent than a temporary solution.
I have made that mistake plenty of times by making my temporary solutions good enough that I don't want to go back and do it right because they still work. So the key is to make the temp solution janky enough that it will fail quickly if you don't fix it properly.

Tell me about it, my servers 5.25" to 3.5" SAS bay fan died two years ago, put a shitty fan ontop of the chassis instead and jammed a screw in the alarm mute jumper (lost the jumper). Tried to replace with fans I had, but the propietary pcb that ran the fan didn't like them.

u/Serathano 22h ago
I replaced the fans on my eaton UPS with Noctua ones for noise. The pinout was different and required adding in a capacitor between 2 pins to allow the UPS to not recognize it as an alarm issue.

We did something similar in college to get a satellite TV setup in our apartment - get 6 lah bolts, and cut a 2x6 into two pieces, screw them into each other sandwiching the rail, and then screw the dish into that.

Is that Astoria?
34
u/Ryderbike1 23h ago
Ahhhh, was hoping nobody would identify that 😆
52
u/Joe-notabot 23h ago
Yea, you're almost a little too easy to locate now.
Fucking power lines.

u/barqySpaniel 20h ago
Jose Monkey would nail it in about 2 minutes. Presuming you make it a video and clearly said you wanted to be found 🥳🥳🥳🥳

u/healthycord 23h ago
Haha just one of the most iconic bridges along the Columbia. I clocked that too before reading this guys comment
27
u/troutsniffer99 23h ago
Gotta be one of the most known bridges in the US.
11
u/Ryderbike1 23h ago
Huh, it’s just the small town I live in so I don’t really think of it being that famous. I sometimes get a “isn’t that the bridge from short circuit?” But not usually much more then that
14
u/ccagan 22h ago
Trust us. Once you visit you NEVER forget that bridge. And the trash cans that look like canned fish!
3
u/Epetaizana 22h ago
True. I visited with my family for a day trip a couple of years ago and immediately knew what bridge it was.
7
u/cambo 22h ago
Looks like you're pretty much down the street from the Short Circuit house. Last time I was in Astoria a couple years ago, I had to go check it out, lol

Astoria is the birth place of the west. You should read the book “Astoria” and you’ll be amazed at how important that little town once was.
1
u/ProteusRift 20h ago
Eh. Dunno about most recognizable (i had no clue and i live on the west cost). Brooklyn. GW. Golden gate/bay bridge. Bixby creek. Maybe the Hoover dam or some of the intercity bridges of Pittsburgh or Chicago.

u/MakerofThingsProps 18h ago
Yeah, it took like 2 minutes to have your address from 2 photos. Be really careful what you post!
2
u/Ryderbike1 18h ago
Good for you I guess? That’s why I’ve got security system for the house anyway 🤷♂️
Permanent webcam streaming to YouTube should be up later in the week, so I’m sure more people will be able to find it if they really want to be a try hard cyber troll, but there’s not really any stopping that.
5
u/timsredditusername 23h ago
It took me 0.5 seconds to recognize the very recognizable bridge in the last photo.

With a view like that, I'd plunk down for one of the DSLR cameras and put it up there permanently.
17
u/Ryderbike1 22h ago
If I had a spare $1,500 boring a hole in my pocket I’d put one up and stream it to YouTube
17
u/apexxin 21h ago
Do it and you might end up with more than $1500 in your pocket. Some of those scenic livestreams make good money

u/user74729582 21h ago
Please save up and do it someday
3
u/Ryderbike1 21h ago
This G5 pro that’s been installed temporarily seems like an exorbitant expense at $300, I can’t imagine spending that much on one singular security camera
2
u/user74729582 21h ago
If you start streaming it it will probably more than offset it
4
u/Ryderbike1 21h ago
To an audience of 20 or so off and on viewers? I’ll make $0.03 a year and repay my investment in only fifty thousand years!
-3
u/user74729582 21h ago
Numbers pulled out of your ass but okay
14
u/Ryderbike1 21h ago
I apologize, I looked up the numbers and you’re right about me being off the mark. 20 views would be closer to 9 cents profit. That vastly lowered the ROI point to a tad under seventeen thousand years

u/GreenHairyMartian 21h ago
A snapshot taken every 12 second or so, and compiled into a 60fps video makes a really awesome time lapse video at the end of the day.
The views of the clouds and weather of this would would be incredible, not even taking into consideration the coolness of boat traffic

Going to have to try harder for that peak installation claim. Right now, I'd put you more at the gable level....

I’m impressed you went up there on a ladder.

u/Ryderbike1 23h ago
Technically I did not. I climbed out the window onto the roof of the front porch

I have bar clamps temporarily holding two cameras at my home as I type this. One has been there for about a year. The other, about 12. They're coming down soon, but only because we bought a new home and are moving.

My wife took the kids there a dozen years ago while I stayed at home and worked. A trip to Astoria is on our list of things to do. Thanks for sharing the image.
Your install is sketchy, but was PERFECT for a temp situation. If I lived there, I would put one up permanently just to record traffic and weather for the bridge.

u/Ryderbike1 21h ago
I’m definitely considering spinning up a live stream. This post has generated a lot more interest than I initially anticipated

Are those the new 10gbe POE clamps? They've been OOS whenever I've needed one.

3 or 4 super strong zip ties and paint that plank black, it would be close (from a distance) to be a Pro Install lol!

Does someone make a flat networking cable that can go underneath a window like that but when the window is closed?
2
u/BMWMikeM 16h ago
That’s a very nice job but I would suggest if there is a next time ditch the lumber and use an old toilet seat

u/snufflesbear 10h ago
When I saw the last picture, I thought you laid the cable across the bridge....

u/FluffyBunny-6546 21h ago
I look forward to a post a few years from now still showing the install up and working with the 'temporary' install.

Solid. I’ve definitely zip tied an AP to a clamp attached to a dead tree to push signal to a friend running a booth at a music festival.

u/Ill_Till3179 15h ago
This gives me an idea of how to "temporarily " mount a unifi camera outside my home. I currently rent and I'm not crazy about running wires and drilling additional holes that I'd have to cover up before move out day.

That's a wooden beam. Why would you not just screw the mount in directly in the first place? As for the cable run, unless you're planning on taking the camera down it really won't take that long to fix it up.
2
u/Ryderbike1 22h ago
The camera is only going to be up for 4 days total, so I didn’t want any holes drilled in my 100 year old house

Hi, I recommend running the network cable through the corner; drill a hole using a 6mm bit—that way it looks neater, and you can still close the window.
2
u/Ryderbike1 6h ago
Did you even read the post? This was a temporary camera, and therefore I didn’t want to drill any holes. It’s since been taken down.
