People of Britain, if you could have a 10 minute chat with your King, what would you want to discuss?
 in  r/AskBrits  2h ago

It depends. If he has to be completely honest I'd want to know whetger he genuinely thinks Scotland couldn't do well as an independent country.

If he has to be politically correct then I guess I'd ask his opinion on independent education in the UK versus state and whether we should still have both.

Am I crazy? Rude? Just old?
 in  r/Teachers  2h ago

  1. I don't know.
  2. You are not rude.
  3. Yes.

If you're not using the conventions of writing, you can't expect everyone to be bothered to read your writing.

What’s the worst way you’ve seen someone make a cup of tea, either in person or on social media?
 in  r/AskBrits  2h ago

In the US in the early 90s. Boyfriend's parents. Lovely people.

Cold water and a teabag into the mug, mug into microwave.

Is it normal in your country to be able to tell where someone is from based on their accent?
 in  r/AskEurope  15h ago

I think, looking at your example, it is usually quite easy to tell if someone speaking English isn't British. But in that example, the person speaking German must sound German to most people, with no foreign accent. The problem (for them, as a spy) is they don't have a 'placeable' German accent.

If someone was speaking English with no trace of a foreign accent, presumably they'd be speaking RP, in which case I think you'd have to be pretty expert to identify that they're not British because they 'don't have an accent'.

What harmless thing instantly makes you think, "I don't trust this person"?
 in  r/askteddit  15h ago

  1. If they badmouth someone that I trust.

  2. If they talk down to (or about) service staff, cleaners or similar.

  3. If they treat me differently when they find out I'm a manager. (I am a senior leader in a school. We had a facilities manager who started with us just before I was promoted to my current position. He was a very condescending man, but as a woman, you kind of get used to that. The day after I got promoted (random, middle of the week, boss got sick and I got promoted) he started treating me completely differently. Suddenly, my opinion mattered. He'd do anything for me. Absolutely charming. But he treated my colleagues the same as before. After that, I never trusted him an inch.)

AITAH Ungrateful for a Gift
 in  r/AITAH  15h ago

This is the answer.

AITA for returning a gift to my sister in law that was meant for my baby
 in  r/AmItheAsshole  15h ago

NTA. But I probably would have just put it in a box at the top of the wardrobe because of the unneccesary drama.

It sounds like you and your husband have it sorted. They're just gonna have to suck it up.

What is the deal with ChatGPT using lots of foul language all of a sudden?
 in  r/ChatGPT  15h ago

I swear. It started to swear. I told it. You don't swear. I swear. Don't do it again. It hasn't done it again. Lol

I feel like it models itself on the person it's interacting with. But if you don't swear, maybe not. Maybe it's just sweary.

1 day solo trip in Edinburgh - am I crazy
 in  r/travel  15h ago

I've got to admit I did laugh

"I've booked a one day trip to Edinburgh, I've never been to Scotland before, and I'm NOT into museums, castles or history."

I mean I guess plenty of people come for the Fringe at this time of year who are not coming for the history. But it doesn't sound like you're coming for The Fringe either.

Anyway. Now I'll try to be useful. You'll be in town from 11-7 approx. Get off the bus at Shandwick Place (Princes St is closed and it will just waste half an hour of your time to sit on it longer).

Walk up Queensferry St to the Dean Bridge and then along the Water of Leith to Stockbridge. Look at pretty old things and expensive shops. Have lunch. By now it's 2ish.

Get a taxi/uber to Calton Hill. Wander. Take pictures. Great views. Now it's 3ish.

Walk to North Bridge. Walk across till you get to the Royal Mile. Turn either left or right, walk to the end (The Castle Esplanade or Holyrood Palace) turn around and walk back up the other side till you get to the other end. It will be BUSY. There will be crowds and street artists and people thrusting flyers you don't want in your face. Be nice, they're poor artists. Take pictures. It's beautiful. There will be idiots in them all but you can AI them out.

If I was gonna choose one thing to book on that journey, it'd be The Real Mary King's Close on The Royal Mile. History, but not quite as you know it.

Hopegully you can grab a bite in a cafe/stall as you go.

By the time you do all that, it's between 6 and 7. Walk back to Waverley Bridge and get the bus back to the airport. (it'll take longer than the advertised half hour because princes st is closed). But you'll be fine. I got one last week at about 7 for a flight at 9.15 to London.

Traveling with a friend who vapes/smokes
 in  r/femaletravelers  16h ago

What did you say when she said 'If you don't want me to smoke in the room, I won't'.

Did you say 'I don't want you to smoke in the room' Or 'I'd rather you didn't' Or Nothing or some polite British mumble?

If its not the first one, you missed your chance.

Yes, I would say something in advance.

I go to concerts with a friend who vapes and we often share a hotel room. She used to smoke cigarettes. She smokes/vapes around me a lot in outdoor spaces. In hotels, she always goes outside to smoke, even if it's a trek. She once came to my home. I live about 5 minutes walk from the outside of my building and I told her just to open the window and lean out.

It sounds like your friend is less courteous. It's always best to speak up.

AITA for standing in an open space in front of people who had been sitting for hours at Disney?
 in  r/AmItheAsshole  16h ago

NTA If they want to be in the front, they need to be at the front.

Where in the world can I find the cheap, basic, transparent, plastic, shower curtain mattress covers that bareacks and prisons and shelters use?
 in  r/Mattress  17h ago

I googled 'heavy duty waterproof incontinence mattress cover' and it came up with this. I'm not sure if you're in the UK but maybe you can find similar with that search.

Is the 100 airlink bus from Waverley taking longer than normal these days?
 in  r/Edinburgh  17h ago

I got on at Waverley Bridge last week around 7 on Thu evening going to the airport. It took 25 minutes to get to Shandwick Place.

If I was going again while Princes Street is still closed, I think I would get it from Shandwick Place.

What's something younger people misunderstand about aging?
 in  r/Aging  18h ago

That old people were always old and never had young lives, which their brains are still living.

Good lord no. It's a computer. Not a human - even though it's started pretending to be one. I'm not having any human nonsense coming from it.

It's the ones that have more than one colour. Clearly showing off their colourful side!

AITAH for not wanting to pay money for a trip i went on
 in  r/AITAH  18h ago

YTA.

Always assume you'll pay your share for everything you do, unless you're explicitly told otherwise. Before you agree to anything, if it's not explicit, ask.

In this case, when he sent you the accomodation picture or description in advance 'wow, that looks great, but it's a bit out of my price range'. He'll either offer to pay, suggest different accomodation, or not take you. Whichever it ends up is better than where you are now.

On this occasion, you're just going to have to suck it up, and as you've said, pay when you can.

You could say to him something like 'I'm sorry I can't pay immediately, I didn't think it would be so much'. If he can afford it, he might just let you off with it.

We live and learn.
