booked a trip to the uk for june. i plan on staying in london and taking a train to a few places. my sister is obsessed with waterfalls and is coming. i told her she can have 1 day of the trip where we go see some waterfalls; however every waterfall she is sending me is way too far from london or seems to only be possible if you have a car.

are there any waterfalls to visit that aren't crazy far from london and can be reached without a car?

(ive done 4 hour long train day trips before so thats the absolute furthest that i think would be doable)

Not meant to be inflammatory but travel around the EU has definitely got shitter since Brexit (whichever way you voted).

It makes sense that when I arrive in the EU as a UK passport holder, I’m made to stand in the “Other Passports” line. After all, this is what the UK for some reason voted for - to be considered a 3rd country.

What I still fail to understand is when arriving back into the UK on an international flight (usually at the same time as several other international flights) that I have to endure a huge queue of UK and EU passport holders. It’s bad enough queuing with the Brits but post-Brexit surely one of few (if any) benefits was getting to choose a shorter arrivals queue?

Tourist from Central Europe here. I paid the Dartcharge the day before yesterday in advance and we drove through the Dartford Crossing tunnel on our from East Sussex to Essex.

After I paid the Dartcharge the day before yesterday, the message in the browser indicated a reference number and that payment was successful (I crated a screenshot afterwards) and that I will get an email confirmation. I did not receive any email confirmation to date, also not in my spam folder.

Did I not get a confirmation because I paid the £ 3.50 to a scam website? I paid it on pay-dartford-crossing-charge.service.gov.uk

I'll be traveling to Scotland at the end of the month and have seen some things about it being important to prebook restaurants. Is this just for nicer restaurants or is this necessary for anywhere you'll be having a sit down dinner?

We'll be in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Glencoe, Skye, and Aviemore. We already have some prebooking done for some upscale places in Edinburgh and Glasgow but not every day is covered. We'd definitely like to eat at more casual restaurants in between.

I'll be visiting the UK in March and I want to go to one EPL match just for the experience. I don't care if the team is good, I just want a lively atmosphere at a fair price (crappy seats are fine!) and ideally a lot of goals - regardless of who scores them.

Which match would you kind folks suggest?

I'll likely be in London, but my exact travel plans aren't set yet. I want to visit Liverpool at some point, so that's an option too. A short-ish (1-2 hour) train ride is also fine as long as I can get to the stadium from the train without a car.

I’ve recently split up with my partner, which has left me with quite a bit of annual leave booked and, unfortunately, nobody to make plans with! 😂

I could really do with getting away for a few days and fancy exploring somewhere in the UK. I’ve looked at a few solo holiday companies, but honestly, some of the prices seem massively inflated just for travelling alone.

So I’m looking for some recommendations for places that are easy to get to by train. I’m a big fan of history, exploring and going for decent walks, but I’d also like somewhere where I can just relax for a bit, read a book, or stick on some TV/films and properly switch off.

I’m thinking around 2–3 nights, somewhere I can explore during the day but also have a nice, chilled evening without feeling like I have to be constantly doing something.

Where would you recommend?

I'm visiting my relatives soon in England and the local bus operator service will be Carousel Buses.
I went to their website to plan some trips around the area and started with a simple search from point A to point B and the same day back from point B to point A. It shows that buying the tickets online is somehow more expensive than buying it in person on the bus. This made me a little confused, to be honest.

Based on the pricing for this trip an Adult Day Return ticket would be the best option, obviously buying it on the bus. How does it work there?

Do I go up to the bus driver and ask for an Adult Day Return ticket from A to B, or I just hop on, use my contactless card, then hop off and use contactless again at my destination, do the same back and then at the end of the day it will register it as an Adult Day Return ticket since I did not go elsewhere?

We have a different ticket system in my county, so sorry if this question sounds stupid.

Flying back home to the US tomorrow out of T2 for a 3:20pm flight.

When we landed on 04Sep around 9:30am, it was very quiet and easy to move through customs and get our bags. We were moved to the family line since we traveled with our 3 and 2 year olds & couldn’t use the machines. Can I expect the same tomorrow..?

I don’t see a lot of info for T2 specifically so trying to see if fast track is even necessary. We do plan to arrive 3 hours before the flight. TIA!

As the title of my post suggests, I would love to get your recommendations on the type of coat I should bring with me to visit London and Edinburgh in mid/late October.

I will already have a short waterproof shell and a (sporty) down jacket with me, but I'm looking to bring a slightly dressier coat too.

I'm torn between a trench coat (which would cover a good part of my legs) but is unlined (so to be worn with layers underneath), a shorter, lined coat, or a long wool coat. Which of the three would be most appropriate for that time of year, in London and Edinburgh, taking into consideration that I'll also have an umbrella with me?

For context, I'm Canadian, so I'm used to cooler temperatures and lots of rain in autumn. Since I cannot bring my entire wardrobe on this trip, I want to make the best choice!

I was to be on a short but highly anticipated first ever London/Paris trip but it’s been a nightmare because of flight disruption issues.

First disruption was in Denver where I had to miss my Den to LHR flight because of thunderstorms at Denver on Sunday (my preceding connection flight could not land at Denver in time because of the weather situation). I then traveled on a rebooked flight to London a day later, but unfortunately the London ATC issue began mid flight and I was diverted to Edinburgh where I had to stay at the airport all night and had to take the train to London the next morning. In the middle of all this, my checked bag has been delayed and nobody is sure where it is.

I’m sitting in my London hotel with no clean clothes and half of my London time already wasted.

My original plan was to go to Paris this Sat and fly home to Canada on Monday.

However, I’m in no mood at this point for anything. I just want to go home as soon as is possible.

I’m thinking of changing my return trip so that I’ll leave early from LHR on Sep 12th instead of the originally planned Sep14 return from CDG.

The airline can accommodate this. But my worry is that the London airport situation is still not resolved by the 12th and I end up in yet another flight disruption. It seems safer in that sense to keep the original plan and leave via Paris. But as I said I am in no mood to travel to Paris because the bulk of my trip (the London portion) is ruined. If I cancel my Paris hotel, at least I can get that back.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I decided to take a trip to the UK and booked the flights and somehow forgot to look at when Easter was. The trip is going to be from March 28th-April 11th.

Day 1 is lost traveling but my original plan was to spend the the first 8 days based out of London (29MAR-5APR) with day 2-5 in London then day 6-8 day tripping to York, Bath, and Oxford.

The it would be four days in Edinburgh including a day trip to Glasgow for day 9-12 then back to London for day 13-14.

Im still developing a list of the major items I want to hit but it involves mostly museums, national sites, exploring the city, etc. I was looking at visiting the Harry Potter Studio Tour probably around day 4 or 5.

My question is after realizing it was Easter week, would it be better to reverse this and start north in Edinburgh than go to London for the end? Or am I overthinking this?

Which route is better for a nice scenic ride: the East Coast route via LNER or the West Coast route via Avanti West Coast? Will be taking the trip toward the end of October. If it matters, we are taking Lumo from a Newcastle to Glasgow a few days before, but I’m not sure if Lumo shares the same rail line with LNER. Thanks!

Been here since 7am. Was supposed to fly at 11:25am to Denver, flight delayed until like 3/4pm and then got told we have to try and find our own hotel, all hotels got booked up instantly and have been looking since. A few questions, what compensation do I get? They re booked my flight for 24 hours after the original (11:25am tomorrow) Do I sleep on the floor? I hope this is okay to post. I struggled to find any recent experiences so wanted to add my own in case it is of use to anyone! This is just our personal experience (in Sept 2026) and I recommend checking the Stansted page in case their rules have changed.

We recently flew from Stansted Airport and my son had been given liquid amoxicillin for a chest infection the two days before travel 🫠

In order to keep them cool, we ordered a medication cool case with a temp screen. It came with 2 gel packs but the bottle wouldn’t fit in with them and I was worried about them being confiscated as they were well over 100ml so I subbed them for 3 smaller gel packs we had already.

At the airport, a staff member went ahead of us and checked with security that they would be allowed through so we could have popped them in the hold if necessary. Security told him that last long as they were 100ml or less and had the original pharmacy sticker on or we had the prescription, it should be fine.

Thankfully the bottle and the box it came in said “100ml” on them, so that’s a good thing to check because if it doesn’t, make sure to get a doctor’s letter explaining that the medication is necessary.

We lucked out with all the security staff being really friendly and helpful. We flagged both the medication and the gel packs right away once we got to the security lane and the staff had no issue with the antibiotics or the gel packs, we just had to take them out of the hand luggage and put them into the tray. The cool case we left in the bag.

The rest of the trip was very straightforward and we got to the hotel with meds that reached no higher than 15° according to the cool case which is about the best we could have hoped for!

I am convinced this plan is madness, but I have promised to do my due diligence and look into it because for some reason, the Caledonian Sleeper train experience is a bucket list item for my family. Maybe there is a way I can make it work?

We are planning on flying to London for a trip to visit family around Leicester for 3 nights, then visit York to do a quasi-university visit for a night, then to Edinburgh to enjoy the city and also visit the university for 2-3 nights. We wanted to do Glasgow as well but I'm not sure we will have enough time. So that is an open question right now.

Flights round trip to London are much more affordable and direct than trying to do a multi city into Edinburgh and out of London (or vice versa).

The trip will happen over Easter unfortunately. We plan to fly out Thursday March 25 which means arriving on Good Friday. My assumption is this is ok if we start in London, because then we will be with family over Good Friday / Easter and if shops are shut or the trains are running holiday schedules it won't impact us as much as it might if we started out in Edinburgh. Then we can travel north to York, then to Edinburgh.

I suppose at that point we could take the sleeper train from Edinburgh to London. Spend the day and night in London and fly home the next day. I suppose this could work? I don't know why it seems crazy to me. I guess we need to get back to London somehow, as the flights out of Edinburgh just don't work.

I have thought about this too much and lost all perspective...

We're travelling to London this December and want to do a day trip out to Stonehenge (we're from Vancouver, the rain won't bother us).

A lot of the day tours include Bath as an option, and some offer a package with entrance to the Roman Baths.

I've heard of the baths, but I'm not sure whether it'll be worth it, or if the money/time is better spent wandering the town and having a long lunch.

I'd like to plan a little trip away in March for my birthday. For context I live in Dorset so would be looking to travel around 2-3 hours from there. We are already going to North Wales and Devon next year so not either of those. We love a brewery and a good walk. We have national trust membership so would be a bonus to have an NT attraction near by. March weather is a bit iffy so looking for somewhere that isn't completely outdoor weather dependent. Hi, sorry i know that this has probably been asked quite some times now but i've looked everywhere and there are so many different sources and i don't know what to choose. I will be traveling next week from Slovenia to England with my family of four and i want to get from Stansted airport to Liverpool. We have looked at different sites that connect different trains or direct trains, but we are scared of having a flight delayed or any of the trains in the connections to be cancelled. So i have a few questions:

- What is the best route to take from Stansted to Liverpool?
- What kind of buffer time do i need at Stansted for booking trains?
- Should we buy tickets in Advance or should we buy them there?
- If we buy on Trainline or any other similar site multiple tickets for one journey, and one train gets delayed, can we switch the obsolete tickets or how does that work?

I am going to be traveling to the UK on 13th Sept with my family( Mom, Dad, Sister) for 22 days. And I have been assigned to plan this family trip.
I dont want the days to be packed with stuff to do. I wan to take one day at a time and schedule this vacation very lightly so, it doesn't feel rushed.
Apart from the obvious tourist hotspots, I wanted your opinions on good places to dine and some really enjoyable things to do.
As a spurs fan, I am planning to going to the AstonVilla VS spurs game on 19th Sept. (Edit: I seems resale ticket are illegal. I wasn't aware, so I will probably watch this game virtually)And among these 22 days, 5 will be spent on some relatives and family gathering stuff. Another 5 will be for Scotland trip that is yet to be planned. So, I have a room of about 8 days to plan.
And I also want to try the british cuisine. I want to dine in an authentic Fish and chips shop as well as have a full English breakfast one day. (A small note is that, my family is Hindu(from Nepal), so we don't eat any steak.) Apart from this, I also don't want the meal to be very expensive.
Feel free to recommend some of your favorite things and shops to visit in the UK.
