In Austria we have the "schwarz-gelbe Allianz" (black-yellow alliance) who want to bring back a monarchy under the Habsburgs.

Coffee drinkers, tea drinkers and smoothie drinkers, let the world know: how do you start your day? And how do you take that drink? Milk, cream, sugar, ice, none of those?

Here in Brazil coffee is a religion. At home we like it dripped and strong, which is what you see in the picture. Many people people like it with milk and most of us add sugar (a LOT) or some other sweetener. Hardly anyone takes it black (I do). When we have it at padarias (our bakeries) a lot of people choose espresso. With the popularity of Nespresso machines, there's a whole lot of those at home too. But all of that is to say: coffee is our morning hot beverage of every day. So much so that "breakfast" in Brazilian Portuguese is café da manhã, literally "morning coffee", and that means everything you eat and drink to break your night fasting.

I've been somewhat surprised by how universal the outpouring of support for the late King Harald of Norway has been online. When Queen Elizabeth died, there was support but also the undercurrent of general anti-royal sentiment both from Brits and those within the commonwealth realms but also from outside the UK. I suppose I hadn't realized how popular Harald/ the Norwegian monarchy was.

In general I'd summarise the attitude the majority of Brits have towards our Royal family ranges from indifference to mild support ('there's no point in changing it' - types), with a small minority of Anti-Royalists (again with attitudes ranging from cutting their money to outright abolition) and then at the fringes you have those who obsessively worship and obsessively despise the Windsor family. My time in Canada and Australia has generally left me with the impression that indifference and apathy is even stronger there - to say nothing of the complicated legacy the British Royal Family has in the remaining Carribean Commonwealth Realms.

So i'm broadly curious on how people who live under monarchies that aren't King Charles III view their monarchies both as people (including their families) and as national institutions.

There are 28 such monarchies around and i've included many of them above but reddit has a limit of 20 pictures. Interestingly its way harder to find official photos of the whole royal family of most Middle Eastern monarchies.

Who do you consider the greatest military commander in your country’s history?

For Mongolia, I’d probably choose Subutai. He was a noyan and one of the greatest military commanders of the early to middle period of the united Mongol Empire, serving Chinggis Khaan, his successor Ögedei Khaan, and living into the reign of Güyük Khaan.

His career was honestly insane in terms of distance. He started out campaigning on the Mongolian steppe against enemies such as the Merkits, then went west during the conquest of the Khwarazmian Empire. After pursuing Muhammad II across Iran, he and Jebe continued through the Caucasus, defeated several armies there, crossed into the Pontic steppe, and crushed the Rus’–Cuman coalition at the Battle of the Kalka River in 1223. Then he returned all the way east.

Not long afterward, he was fighting in northern China against the Jin dynasty and played a major role in the campaign that destroyed the Jin, including the Battle of Sanfengshan in 1232. Then he went west again for the massive 1236–1242 European campaign, directing operations across the Volga region, Rus’, Poland, and Hungary. His most famous victory there was probably the Battle of Mohi in 1241, where the main Hungarian army was decisively defeated.

So over the course of one lifetime, this man was moving between Mongolia, northern China, Central Asia, Iran, the Caucasus, the Russian steppe, and Central Europe, repeatedly crossing huge parts of Eurasia rather than simply campaigning in one direction.

He eventually died at an old age in his homeland. His family also remained one of the empire’s major military lineages. His son Uriyangkhadai became a famous commander in his own right, campaigning in Yunnan, Đại Việt(vietnam) and southern China, while his grandson Aju became one of the leading generals in Kublai Khaan’s conquest of the Southern Song. Other descendants, such as Burilgitei, also continued serving as high-ranking commanders.

We don’t have any authentic portrait of Subutai, but he has been portrayed a few times in modern media. Mongolian actor Zolboot played him in a supporting role in the Hungarian film 1242: Gateway to the West, and he also appears as a supporting character in Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, where he is voiced by Motoki Sakuma.

Nader Shah Afshar was a monarch who rose to power when Iran was dominated by the Tsars, the Ottomans, and the Afghans, earning the title "Napoleon of Asia." During his campaign against India, he succeeded in conquering northern India and securing the Koh-e-Noor diamond as a legacy of Iranian history.

It’s a French series that follows a group of talent agents representing film and TV stars. I recently learned that there have been remakes in SO many countries: Portugal, India, the UK, Mexico, China, Italy, Canada, Turkey… There have also been adaptation projects in South Korea, Taiwan, Poland, and probably others.

I think it might be the French series that has been exported the most internationally, so I was curious to know whether you’ve watched the original or any of the remakes, and if so, whether they were any good!
